The game itself is pretty decent around that, although that's one thing that has improved pretty consistently in other MMOs since. Still, the variety of travel modes like flying, super-jumping around, tunneling, etc and a variety of area-of-effect powers, charge ups, etc make it much more hands-on than most games of the era, and there's a refreshing lack of hp-sponge enemies. (If you spec your guy for damage, most combats are <5 seconds, bosses excepted.)
It's missing a lot of things that are more standard in newer games; it's not voice-acted past a few major story cutscenes, the graphics show their age, the level design is pretty plain, and so on, but it's still a pretty good time. And, it's nicely easy to pick up or drop out of; it doesn't do many of those pavlovian things to keep people playing when they're tired of the game for a while, and while that might be costing it a larger user base, it also makes for a more relaxed mmo to pick up for a couple hours a week. It's not going to win any awards for any one aspect, but as a whole it's light and pleasant, and I've kept coming back to make new alts and run them for a few levels for a solid ten years at this point, and will probably continue to as long as it's running.

I've wasted a lot of money on the game. Even have a lifetime sub. This game doesn't deserve any of your money, take it from me. All it is now is a cash cow for Cryptic to milk until they decide to close the servers finally. The game is only held together by the sunken cost fallacy and denial that the game still has something to offer...

But then i had a break for about a year, and when i came back all my characters were deleted. Tried contacting them but no one answered.
Made a new character anyways, game was just not as good anymore feels even more restrictive than before for free players.
I will say this, if you feel like having some old school P2W nostalgia go for it, it seems that to this day (13/12/21), they still do patches for the game.
Otherwise Stay away from it there are better games like this out there

Champions Online has been slowly and steadily declining for the better part of a decade now, a process I had the lovely luck to watch happen in real time. I guess Cryptic feels like they don't need to try to make a good game anymore, after City Of Heroes went down and how boring the DC mmo is- the level slog is real, the missions are boring, and the one real draw- freeform characters and costume parts- have been hidden behind extra expenses that didn't used to be there and in random-chance loot crates you have to pay real money for keys to open. Content that was promised never manifested, and the community is left to assume it never will, that the promises were empty. Promises that WERE kept were half-assed and hidden, again, behind micro-transactions- remember vehicles? How about Onslaughts, yeah, there was supposed to be actual content there, too. When's the last time they even released an Adventure Pack?
It feels like the developers don't want to be working on this game anymore, or that Cryptic doesn't want to spend the money and effort to make it feel like they do, anymore. As someone who spent hundreds of dollars on the game -before- I bought a lifetime subscription, I can't even really find the enthusiasm to launch it anymore.
Don't waste your harddrive space.

I have been playing on and off for years now. I can only say good things about its character creator, which is its main selling point. The only time I personally even care to start up the game at this point is just to log into a few seasonal events or when i'm drunk and nothing more. Because there is nothing in terms of endgame content and not much in terms leveling content and it takes them literal YEARS to even provide anything in terms of game content, keep in mind this game has been around since 2009 and not much has been added except a bunch of costume pieces.
I cannot recommend this game in terms of content. Why you may ask? It barely has any content and you will find yourself in a hardcore repetitive loop is why. This is a barbie dress up game with some combat and that's generally all there is to it. You can create a character and give it some power sets but there honestly isn't much to do... you're better off playing Star Trek Online or Neverwinter, the only Cryptic games that actually get a lot of content updates.
It would help the game if the devs were more transparent about the game in general and talked to their community but thats wishful thinking because the devs do the bare minimum to provide anything for the community at all. The only time there is any dev interaction is during dev costume contests, which just adds to my point that it's a barbie dress up game more than it is an actual game.
Cryptic has turned into a company that wants nothing more than your money and nothing else just to pay their employees and to keep the server running (Aka the bare minimum). They don't really care about the people who play it and don't have that much confidence to add anything more to the game. I just find it amazing how Cryptic did everything right with their first game City Of Heros but did a lot of things wrong with their second attempt being Champions Online.

As a child there was a subscription option that I couldn't afford which unlocked all the cool paid stuff. They removed the subscription and only left the lifetime option which costs over 200 euros. I would genuinely return to this game and pay for 1-3 months of subscription out of pure Nostalgia but I'd sooner swallow a handful of needles than spend 200 euros on game that's been at death's door since I can remember.
It's a bit frustrating really, I don't understand how they make more money this way.
Only reason I can see to play this game is if you're nostalgic like me but unlike me, extremely wealthy.

Pros- One of the best games for character customization in both looks and power/class choices *if your character is a Freeform*, interesting storys per map, nice back story for seasonal and the big event fights, lots of costumes are free and earnable/account unlock, you can earn Questionite from missions and dailies to turn in to Zen *real money currency*, devs do give out free things in most events, seasonal events always get a 1-3 new items to earn.
Cons-Lots of classes are locked and need to be bought or earned in the yearly event which takes a while, sub was cancelled monthly and only has a lifetime version now, pvp is broken and unbalanced, game only gets new content off and on kinda rarely most is revamps, you basically need at least one Freeform class to have the best exp, pve endgame meta is boring and can get very repeatative over the players using the same cookie cutter builds, end game and pvp community can be pretty toxic.
Over all the game is fun if you get a Freeform and dont bother with just meta gameplay-lots of character creation options and usually can find a group to team with and just enjoy the theme of the game or roleplay/casual or play with friends.

You have at least one new superhero mmo releasing this year with 3 more in the future that are all fan service to the game this one replaced because there is no alternative. I used to play Champions online back in the day and I even played the Alpha but this game as it currently stands is nothing but shameful. Honestly I'm glad to see its on the way out.

It has horrible features :
- You cannot dodge. It is so ridiculous that if you hide behind something, range attacks still hits you for a time until the game realises that the enemy has not LOS to you and then the attacks stops. In other words, the attacks are already decided before you see them on the screen or before the bullet has left the gun. That is bad and poor game design typical of Hack'n'Slash MMO.
- The game does not allow you to create your own super hero. You are forced to choose from a bunch of stereotypes instead, which sucks since many of those are boring or sucks.
- Like all other Hack'n'Slash MMO, all you do in combat is press 1-9 and such to use attacks and that is it. You cannot dodge, parry, move fast out of the way, teleport out of harms way, etc. If you do move fast or teleport, the attacks still hits you because they are resolved BEFORE the attack is made by the character. This is particularly stupide when you teleport since your character no longer exists in the game world while teleporting, incoming blasts and bullets should hit nothing... that is why Nightcrawler of the X-Men is so useful aside from his high agility and acrobatic skills.
- The only part of character creation that is moderately interesting is the esthetic part. But even then, they impose you things. Like if you make a witch, you are forced to have a long skirt, you cannot wear pants, short skirts, furs, etc. Nope impossible to wear the things that are sold in markets and stores on main street, it is forbidden!
- No background. Your character is just a hack'n'shoot machine without a purpose or story. Yes, you can write down a story, but why would you do that in a hack'n'slash game when it does not support at all role-play? It only supports combat and more combat and even more of that... but even then, combat is super badly made and very boring... I feel like I am looking at a Flintstones wrestling match where two guys hit each other on the head until one falls.
- Fighting is dumb. I am playing a super hero yet I get my butt handed to me by a thug... you might say, well you are too low level... huh... that is not how super heroes works. Super powers rarely change. If you have powerful powers, you have them forever the only thing that changes is the stunts you do with them and how skilled you are at using them. The more powerful, the harder it is to control them... example, the son of Professor X is a good example, he had lots of trouble keeping under control his powers when he was young. Anyways, powers are too similar to each other whether you use heat or magical energy or whatever, it just more of the same with a different eyecandy. Just like in other MMO hack'n'slashers.
- The game is very repetitive, just like all MMOs.
This game would have been great if you were actually fighting but you are not. It would have been nice to press a button to dodge an incoming blow or hit the dirt to avoid a blast. Press another button to use an attack to counter another attack like fire blast against another fire blast. But no, too innovative for the devs, they prefered to just copy-paste an MMO, reskin it, and add different stories in it... but this game is made on the same model as other Hack'n'slashers but worse (bullets and blasts follows you through walls, objects and even when you are in teleportation mode). Sucks!
- Speaking of character creation. You actually need to pay coins to unlock more stereotypes. Coins are rare commodity that you can get with real money also. Why would I want to unlock a nother stereotype? I would want to unlock full character creation like in the Champions tabletop rpg (a set of points that you invest in your character and poof! you have your super hero). Again, that was wayyyyyyyyyy tooo complicated to do (even though you have softwares dating back to the 1990s that does the character creation).
Do not waste your time with this game if you have played any other MMO, it is just the same as any other. There is nothing new in it. In fact, it is the worse combat model that I ever played in an MMO and the game does not make you believe you are playing your role... feels more like I am playing an old version of World of Warcraft reskinned.

If you are looking for a mechanically decent MMO with a good building system that's balanced and combat mechanics that are fun and engaging...then this game is NOT for you.
It has a mostly toxic community, filled with people that are overly insecure about their own sensitivities and aren't socially inclined to deal well with people a majority of the time.
However, I have found some of my longest standing online friends in this community spanning years of strife and personal stress. This game is pretty much the epitome of finding the diamond in the rough.
If you are looking for a decent game to be social in with one of the most advanced and free character creation systems out there. And/Or you are just a general roleplayer and love a deep engrained setting with a lot of lore to choose from... Then this is the MMO for you.
But if you are PvE/PvP player that likes challenging content or you like to play against other players actively, you'll just be wasting your time.

To those looking to get started into this game, an unreasonable amount of things are locked behind paywalls. Whatever isn't behind a paywall is behind a lockbox, so even if you pay for a lifetime subscription, you're still going to wind up needing to buy things, and even after that dump even more on lockbox nonsense. Seriously, this game is the worst i've ever seen when it comes to this stupid lockbox trend.

Things you can do with the character creator:
1) Customise almost every part of your characters size including: Arms, hands, legs, feet, head, chest, etc etc
2) Change all the clothing of the character including: Shoulder pads, capes, backpacks, and even some weapons!
3) Choose from a wide range of emblems for your character!
4) Name and give an (optional) backstory for your character!
5) change the colour of all clothing options and even make some glow!

pro's:
It may not look as fancy as most games these days but it definately has a unique charm to it.
Customization is amazing you may not have all costume pieces and or costume sets from the get go but i feel this doesn't limit creativity as much. Wether you want a space cowboy or a medieval lizard you can pretty much do anything.
The community is small but it's absolutely amazing alot of awesome and unique individuals i met on Champions Online
Alot of the costume pieces and archetypes are unlockable through either the auction house with ingame currency or from events.
Cons:
The population is thin and can feel like a ghost town.
All in all this game is just one of those games you need to judge yourself one man's garbage is another man's gold as they say i personally love this game and always did and reccomend everyone to give it a fair shot!
Thanks a ton for reading thought this garbage first review of mine and i hope you all have a great day. Thanks.

I recently reinstalled the game on Arc out of some nostalgia. Objectively nowadays though, I find that the cel-chaded art style is quite ugly. The wide variety of costume options get swallowed up in the ugly black outlines, and that's an issue where character customisation is so important. As a somewhat older game the control scheme is also a little outdated and a little awkward, but can be learned.
The move to F2P removes a lot of the original powerset options without paying for Freeform or Lifetime subscriptions, both of which I find rather expensive. Every company has to choose how to monetise, but this does seem a little steep if you're a new player and is a barrier to spending money.
This does lead to my biggest gripe with the game though. I have no problem with MMOs going F2P and the monetisation systems which they need to keep the game running. I do have a problem when you force players who already paid for the game and have a number of characters already, but who can no longer play them without paying even more.
Aside from the personal loss of those created characters, it just seems like a bad business model for the vast majority of players. It alienates players who aren't willing to pay 250 dollars for a lifetime subscription just to continue to play a game that you already paid for.
I can't recommend this game for new players or anyone trying to return to it to get their superhero MMO fix.

Every single character you get to level has to go through the same story arcs, and there is no immersion whatsoever safe for a couple of the Adventure Packs.
Combat system is relatively fast paced in comparison to other MMORPGs, but there is zero balancing and it's very buggy, additional to revamps and nerfs coming from the current developer team. There are no Endgame story arcs and the only content consist of the same activities to grind for resources in order to get Endgame gear: one epic dungeon, raid-like events that consist in defeating the same 3 giant monsters when available (4h cooldown each), and repetitive daily mission. Occasionally, the devs. have to throw in one the their various events for 1 or 2 weeks to give some variation to the daily gameplay, but it gets old after the first couple of times.
Furthermore, and despite several available of the purchasable elements are cosmetic in nature, a good number of them have turned it into a casino machine, which has turned it into a P2W game.
The only element I would credit this game for is the high versatility of the character creator, in regards to visuals. And perhaps the variety of powers at your disposal, which it's highly debatable, provided not every combination synergizes well (or at all) when it comes to theme-based characters.
Finally, the community in general is one of the worst ones that can be found in the genre. Community managers and costumer service are terrible, if completely unresponsive, and developers are utterly non-receptive to players.
At one point, I would have recommended this game, but the conditions for it have ceased to exist.

You can customize your hero with abilities, costume, flight, powers, size etc... The quest lines are organized and player friendly.
Tons of content for solo, small groups or large groups. Instances, dungeons, PvE.
This game is extremely rewarding to play. My only complaint is its a little too PG and could use more blood/gore for battles. But other than that this is one of the best MMO games out there. Grab a pack of friends and save the universe!

The character creation is extremely strong, even for the free-to-play version. They give you many archetypes to choose from, way more classes then most MMORPGs that are also customizable, as in you cannot get all the powers. You can pay $30 to unlock a 'freeform' character, but that should be done after you've decided you enjoy the game enough to want to spend money, also it's for experienced players so you shouldn't do it immediately. There are tons and tons of archetypes to choose from, unfortunately most of them are pay. City of Heroes gets the edge in power choice, because it doesn't have any behind paywalls. I feel the design of your character is stronger in Champions Online, even with the free-to-play restrictions as there are far more options for details, I find myself compromising more in City of Heroes.
The style of the game is exactly how a Comic Book-centric MMO should be, everyone compares it to City of Heroes which by the way was the game that closed, notice how this game didn't? IMO Champions Online's presentation is leaps and bounds ahead of CoH. It's better written as it's actually funny, and the stories are relatively interesting. It has a great way of re-calling everything you've done, at times it feels like your character is apart of a comic book storyline. City of Heroes definitely feels inspired by comics, but the presentation is lackluster in comparison, the writing is much more shallow and it feels much more tedious due to the lack of variation of locales. Champions Online has you in three drastically different terrain right at level 10 - you got desert, snow and city all full of level appropriate quests. Both games have difficulty scaling, as in you can turn up the difficulty on enemies. I feel Champions Online needs it, as the base difficulty feels too easy and allowing you to set it to the level you enjoy it is great. Whereas I feel City of Heroes did it solely to create an option for people to group up to complete the same stuff in a more difficult way, because you cannot solo the more difficult stuff. Champions Online you could manage to solo all the way up to epic, if you're skilled enough. Turning City of Heroes difficulty up just slightly makes it very near impossible without a group. Questing in Champions Online is far more engaging and interesting than CoH, for me CoH feels more like going from point A-B over and over and over. Whereas Champions Online feels like you're traversing great, sometimes too much, distances and seeing an eclectic myriad of comic book references, silly jokes and hidden gems. One big aspect of MMORPGs I always feel is neglected is exploration, it's essentially a non-factor in CoH, there is no point to explore and running around for the quests gets monotonous. Champions Online is a treat to explore the environments, often I am actually pleasantly surprised which I don't usually experience in MMORPGs.
Combat in this game is very familiar to most MMORPGS, which can be tweaked, but essentially it's the usual button-macro tab-targeting. There are options to make it more action-combaty which helps a lot, there's even an option to make it like a first person shooter which is unique. As you level you acquire abilities automatically, occasionally there is a choice between two, you're also awarded Trait points to unlock traits which give large stat bumps, ie. +8 Dexterity, and you also earn points to put into a stereotypical talent tree. Gear is only 6 slots and has no cosmetic effect, but why would you want it to if you designed your superhero costume? You also have gadgets, which is where the potion-type items, buffs, etc go. Compared to City of Heroes, Champions Online is basically identical to most other MMORPGS, CoH's combat is tab-targeting, but its very, very unique in its ability acquisition, buffing and gearing. If you don't absolutely love City of Heroes' very unique style then Champions Online will feel far more familiar.
Are the private servers creating new stuff for CoH? Then why are you pretending that's a valid negative for this? There are tons of stuff to do, so complaining that it's dead should only happen if you have thousands of hours already, there are literally hundreds of achievements. Do those negative reviewers have all of them? There are a lot of current players still, the devs are still around you can see the patch notes and they do add stuff, albeit minor in comparison to a game that is not 11 years old. But honestly, if you can get this many of free hours of video game... why are you complaining? It's not pay-to-win, it's pay-to-keep-the-lights-on. Which by the way, maybe City of Heroes wouldn't have died if it had tried.

Why do you ask:
1) No new content in AGES. Yes they claim to have added some, but they are quick crappy missions.
2) LOCK BOXES! This game is driven by lockboxes. It is now PTW
3) Unless you are lifetime you will have to BUY access to every single thing you want, it will cost you more REAL money than any game is worth.
4) the stopped fixing glitches. There are a crap load of glitches that still have not been fixed nor will they.
5) Devs don't care. My opinion.
6) I could go on and on but if you are not convinced by now you wont be. Since Perfect World took over they have only been interested in getting as much money out of people as they can before they finally kill this game, don't fool yourself this game is months from death. DON'T BY A LIFETIME MEMBERSHIP AT ANY PRICE!

Honestly, the game is a lot of fun and you can create pretty much any character you can imagine, even without spending a single penny. Of course, if you want to experience the game to it's fullest, this is what it will cost you:
Premium Pack (1500 Cash Shop coins): This unlocks 6 character slots, a ton of travel powers, power tinting and a lot of cosmetics that would be much more expensive otherwise.
Freeform slots x3 (6000 Cash Shop coins): This gives you 3 character slots which allow you to fully customise your powers.
On sale this will cost you about £39.99, which is more than reasonable in my opinion.
Of course, this is a Perfect World game and there are lootboxes galore. They can be mostly ignored, but some powers are lootbox exclusive, even if you have a freefrom slot. There's nothing p2w though, as a freeform character is already so broken that a single power isn;t going to make much of a difference.
For new players, there is a ton of really well designed content to enjoy. I would strongly recommend ignoring the alert system on your first character as, whilst it will allow you to level up faster, you'll be missing out on a lot of the content the game has to offer. The different zones are well designed, and the quests and storylines are well written with a lot of self-referential humour. It's worth taking your time with it.
Unfortunately, content updates for this game are few and far between, although we have recently gotten some new content updates. The few updates we do get are generally too small to be engaging for veteran players however.
The community is quite small, but very vocal. In the main hub of Millennium City, you'll have more than your fair share of people to chat and play with and people are very helpful if you need anything. Not that you would need much mind - the game is very solo friendly.
I've seen some people compare this to City of Heroes, which I personally think is unfair as they're both entirely different games. City of Heroes is more of a traditional MMO experience, but I personally found it far too slow and outdated to be enjoyable by anyone without nostalgia goggles on. Champions is a lot more fun in the short term, but likely won;t hold your attention for as long. Champions DOES have a far more enjoyable IP though - the heroes and villains are reminiscent of silver age Marvel and I found it to be the strongest aspect of the game.
Tl;dr If you;ve never played this game before, you'll probably have a really fun time with it. Just don;t expect it to be an MMO that can hold your attention for months on end - this is something to be enjoyed in short bursts of gameplay.

I will say that playing totally F2P is much less satisfying. Purchasing a freeform archetype is where the real fun comes in allowing you to mix and match powers from any of their many sets. At at $30 one time cost that you can then use til the game servers go offline at some point in the future, I'd say that's a heck of a lot better value than a 2 month sub to any other MMO out there.

.....it utterly failed. Gameplay feels empty, meandering, and unsatisfying. The combat is bland. The loot system is confusing and unintuitive. The art style is unappealing to say the least. What was supposed to be an overall improvement is just a disappointing imitation.
Now that City of Heroes has been revived as privately run servers, I have literally no reason to ever look back at CO.
