Some aspect of fighting are similar to the first game, but guard break isn't nearly as effective as before, and enemies can be annoying in the way they sometime dodge your attacks.
You don't have a main menu level selector anymore. Instead, you move around to go to places you need, which can be interesting. But it gets quite tiresome when you have to go back to retrieve previously unreachable bonuses (just like in the 2 previous games, in which it was much easier to remember; the first one indicated when you had a collectible in a specific level, whilst the second one allowed you to mark the map; this one has neither, so have fun remembering everything).
I can recommand it, but only slightly. Gameplay wise, the first one was much better.

This game SLAYS the first game, everything that made LoS1 boring was overhauled or at least tweaked here.
Yeah the stealth sections sucks, no way to defend them, but there are 4 in the WHOLE GAME and they last 3-5 MINUTES. Everything else is MUCH BETTER. Even the DLC is amazing. Wtf is wrong with game critics lol
This game has been wronged, and we failed MercurySteam this time.

Oh, I will say that the DLC is extremely short and could use another boss or two (literally one of the places feels like it's missing one, and it's also mostly just puzzles) but the Ultimate edition is cheap enough as it is so it's not really a strong negative against it.

In the tutorial I fought an steampunk angel from Darksiders and his giant mecha.
Then I woke up in 1990s London with anachronistic 1960s telephone boxes, and post-brexit street beggars.
Professor X told me he was my best friend and promised to kill me if I helped him defeat satan.
He gave me a Terminator 1 entrance into a cyberpunk lab that's guarded by Quake 4 strog... which I have to stealth-kill.
I haven't even finished the tutorial missions yet!

It's a great experience for players who enjoy action adventures games where you play as Dracula.
The gameplay feels oddly similar to the God of War series (the first 3).
It is fun, it is compelling, it is very well presented, both visually and audibly and above all else, it entertains.
Obviously, it's not perfect. The stealth sections in particular are my least favourite. It doesn't seem right that the almighty Dracula has to turn into a bunch of rats to avoid some enemies when at the beginning of the game you fight titans and godlike creatures.
I believe that's because it follows the Stoker's idea of Dracula. It seems that the developers were inspired mainly from Stoker's book and the Coppola movie. The developers brought so many details from the original Dracula like people possession, transformation, boundless love to his wife and even some quotations from the 1992 movie.
It took a while before I got to understand and appreciate this for what it is.

This game picks up from where the previous one left off as one would imagine. I personally enjoyed the first Lords of Shadow Castlevania, but it is nothing compared to this one. If you can only get one, get this one and just read a summary and watch the cutscenes of the first one.
- The story and voice acting are engaging and well done
- The music always delivers that extra dimension to the world that it's meant to
- Visually the game and art are stunning
- The gameplay is smooth and extremely fun.
- Lots of fun boss fights
- The quick time events and puzzles are still present (controversial features of the first game) but they feel completely natural in this installment, and are much more fun
- No more fixed camera angle like in the first
I highly recommend this game.

First the good, the combat is better, in terms of both polish and mechanics (free camera!). God of War combat still isn’t really my preference, but it’s functional now. You even get different weapons! OK, that’s all for the positives.
Gabriel Belmont is Dracula (Gabula from now on) and wants to die, Patrick Stewart tells him he will kill him with the only thing that can if Gabula kills three Bad Guys. Why can you get a game over if Gabula’s immortal? Good question! Anyway while looking for these guys you get pulled from a modern city into a castle in Gabula’s mind (?) at arbitrary points in the game to do some activities so separated from everything else they feel like sidequests.
The city sections are a low point of the game and probably the entire franchise. They’re drab and ugly, the layout would be impossible to navigate without the minimap waypoint. Half of the enemies look like they belong in a different franchise and genre. Most of the stealth sections take place here as well. It’s a meme to complain about the stealth sections at this point, and they do make up a tiny part of the game, but they really are shallow and putrid and it’s not clear why they’re in the game at all. In addition, the city’s scaling is kind of screwed up, Gabula is tiny compared to everything else, if you put him next to mundane objects like lampposts or cars he looks like the prince of manlets.
The castle sections are a bit better, one part even reminded me a bit of Psychonauts in a good way. But with how you get teleported in and how little these sections relate to the city to its hard not to feel like it’s just a bunch of random junk made in a vacuum and then smashed into the game haphazardly. The castle also contains the worst stealth section in the game, in its defense it does introduce stealth mechanics beyond line of sight, unfortunately they’re borked. You can ring bells to distract the guy, but when I rang the bell he just ran immediately to me (nowhere near him, projectile not in line of sight) and instant-failed me. Despite his own-zone attack you fight him immediately after the stealth section with no real change to him or you and he goes down like a chump, which makes you wonder what the point of it even was.
Spoilers follow, because these sections are just too insane to leave out.
A big titty mind vampire in Gabula’s mind-castle seduces Gabula into drinking her hypno-blood, and then once you get past her stealth section and counteract her hypno-blood with Gabula’s mind-wife’s blood, she encases herself in an electrical sphere and tries to bowl you over.
A man drops a magic rock in the middle of a boss fight and then grows 5 times his size, you stop him by smashing the rocks surrounding the arena for 30 seconds and hes so slow I don’t think he got an attack off on me. The next phase of the boss fight is a QTE.
The same man kills himself minutes later for you, minutes after meeting you, for nebulous gain on Gabula’s behalf and without considering any alternatives.
You spend like half the game and multiple castle visits trying to get an antidote for a mutant plague for a mutant for nebulous reasons. Once you get the antidote Patrick Stewart opens a portal for you to teleport you back to the start, why didn’t he let you teleport there from the start, grab the antidote and go back into the portal? Would take too long and they’d notice the portal, stupid! Anyway then you find out the mutant is Bad Guy 1 and she tries to kill you by blowing up the building you’re in. Why did she merely pretend to be an idiot and pointlessly spend several hours chained to some rock? Good question! I dunno maybe she liked it.
You spend a long time trying to kill Bad Guy 1, much less time trying to kill Bad Guy 2, and then Bad Guy 3 and the endgame take like an hour put together. The game’s clearly not done.
If this review feels patchwork and disjointed, that’s just what playing the game is like. I spent most of LoS1 annoyed and most of MoF bored. I spent most of LoS2 just befuddled. This might be the worst LoS game as far as grading media with a beginning middle and end goes, but I think I enjoyed it the most out all of them. LoS2 is so bizarre and nonsensical I got a lot of value out of staring at the freakshow unfolding before my eyes. I definitely wouldn’t recommend buying or playing it unless you’re insane though.

Then, coming to this game I was very apprehensive due to all the negativity surrounding this game. Well I was an idiot once again. I'm about 3/4 of my way through the main storyline as of writing this, and LoS2 is now my second favourite Castlevania of all time (right behind SotN).
I'll address the negativity this game receives:
1. Stealth sections
-These aren't bad like every man and his dog raves on about, and the majority (from what I have experience) happen when Dracula has just returned without his powers so they make sense from a story perspective
2. KB&M Support
- Don't know, don't care about this as I play most Action and RPG games with a controller like a normal person
3. Camera control
- The camera works fine for me, and I absolutely hated the fixed camera in the first LoS game as you would be travelling along, camera would change, and bam, you are moving in a random direction because of the camera change
So in summary, I love this game. It has the Castlevania gothic vibe, Castlevania 3D fighting, excellent Castlevania story that continues on from the previous LoS entries and you play as freakin' Dracula for crying out loud (Konami or whoever picks up Castlevania in the future, make this a more common occurrence please!)
Don't fall in to the negativity cesspit like I did. This is a Castlevania game, and an excellent one at that.

The platforming elements are greatly improved, due to a controllable camera, although combat and keeping your focus meter up is downgraded from the original. The locations look wonderful in the castle, but drab and by the numbers in the cityscape. The annoying QuickTime events are also gone, thank the gaming gods.
The writing has improved a lot since the last two releases (“Lords of Shadow” and “Mirror of Fate”) although I sometimes felt uncomfortable with the whole “Satan this, Satan that” aspect. At least this time they do not bring him in as a weird walk-on cameo boss at the end.
I also felt myself caring for Drac and his plight this time around. There are several “Welcome to my world, B!@tch” moments scattered around the game that make you feel like a total badass.
BUT- every time you have one of those “OH YHEA!!” moments, the game immediately grinds to a screeching halt with a poorly designed puzzle or a stealth mission. (Where all your combat skills are deactivated.) Where the original had odious platforming in the last chapters, LOS 2 hast a frustrating chore every half hour or so. The worst of these offenders is undoubtedly the Faun’s labyrinth. I’m Dracula! In the last few hours, I murdered two spawn of the devil, and pushed giant battering rams out of my way with minimum effort! Why can’t I just beat up this Bazooka toting man baby, or knock down this flimsy wooden door?
I cannot recall the last time I screamed this many obscenities at the screen. Oh wait, yes I can, it was in the last three chapters of the first LoS.
Long story short, there would be an enjoyable game buried here, if only it did not ram a stake through its own heart every time it starts to crawl out of the grave.

More specifically it evolved, it shed old gaming cliches and literally every game is a Dark Souls clone.
This game is the last in the dead genre to which games like God of War 1 + 2 belong too.
Coincidentally this is also the last decent game of Konami before they killed the Castlevania franchise and built a slot machine on its corpse...
Lords of Shadow 1 re-told the story of Castlevania, Dracula and the Belmont clan. More specifically the very beginning.
Lords of Shadow 2 tells the end of the story and brings the setting to modern times. (similar to a lot of vampires-related media which is not bad)
But if Lords of Shadow 3 will ever come out it will tell not only of the REBIRTH of the story but also of the entire franchise.
The 3rd game can only happen if Konami either completely changes their business approach or sells the franchise to someone who can handle it. My only hope is that 3rd times the charm. That this series and franchise can return as did Witcher 3 and God of War (2018).
RIP Castlevania (1986-2014)
at least we still got the Netflix show..

PRO (not many):
1. The combat mechanics are a copy of the first except you acquire moves in a different way.
2. It is reasonably long and somewhat varied.
3. There are some nice story bits and fun but few an far between.
CONS:
I will put this specially at the top as it is extremely INFURIATING:
The game wants you to go back to collect secrets, HOWEVER the enemies that spawn can't be SKIPPED all the time as once you try to climb away (which almost all areas require), enemies get a special animated throw attack that makes you fall down. YOU can avoid it in places/sometimes BUT it's SO BAD as I don't want spend my time grinding this useless fights.
1. Combat has at least one terrible design flaw. It is the fact that some enemies now have guns... and just shoot you from 10 miles away. Also, there's a bloody unit that can chain shoot you from a distance and you can't do anything once you get shot once and get stuck in that animation - it's ABYSMAL. Lots of that makes the combat absolutely terrible and you can't sequence a good amount of moves.
2. The actual levels are quite dull for the most part and even though they've tried to create an open world of sorts, it hasn't worked that well.
3. IF you buy it - make sure to acquire all powers before you go start going back and collecting items as it gets very repetitive (wings are the last thing).
4. The story is borderline acceptable. It's very hacked up and honestly quite uninventive. I did not really enjoy it.
5. No replaybility at all. I wouldn't want to touch EVER again.
All that said, if you can buy it for the price of an ice-cream and want to just go through the story, it's OK. But I wouldn't recommend trying to get the secrets or anything else - it's all worthless.

the part that finally broke the camels back was a puzzle section where you lead another character over some paltforms you have to trigger with daggers.
boring stealth sections with one shot ko's.
the story overall just feels super weak.
loading screens, unskippable cutscenes (probably loading screens) you've seen before.
checkpoints at sections that set you at points that lead to the aforementioned outcome.
bosses up to my point were not that well designed and it was basically a spam attack and heal every now and then.
in the exploration sections there are tedious and repetitive enemy spawns that are just there to slow you progression to a crawl.
enemies overlapping attacks that leave you in a pseudo stun lock.
positives compared to the first one would be a better camera. subjective, but i like to look around.
play the first game, read up on the story of the second one.

Good:
Story- Quite simple, without any big plot twists like in the first game however it's still enjoyable. It's quite refreshing to play for Dracula for once, rather than a vampireslayers (Simon, Trevor and others are cool but yea).
Graphics- Looking nice.
Audio- Fantastic as usual.
Combat -Very enjoyable. Now some people complain it's basically God of War reskin. It's true, but is that a bad thing? Depends on personal taste, i suppose.
Bad:
Stealth- it's horrible. If the first game had problems, which made you frustrated, it was puzzles (which were improved here, fortunatelly). I have absolutly no idea why The Prince of Darkness can be beated by some power armored goons so easily. Also shapeshifts to a rat.... a filthy rat...*facepalm* i thought we're playing for a vampire, THE vampire, so why not change to a bat for further stealth action?
Endgame- without spoilers, the last boss is dumb easy. Unlike previous game the final showdown ain't legendary clash at all and i found myself expecting second phase (which never came, what a shame). Needless to say the game ends with quasy cliffhanger, like Konami/ Mercurysteam planned to make Lords of Shadow 3, or atleast i had that feeling. Final moments brings more questions than answers.
Final verdict: 7/10 a game with great potential but in some places poorly executed. Still, i had good time playing it.

Positives:
Core mechanic of the Gameplay is fun even though it has problems with enemy behavior.
Sound design and music are amazing.
Graphics are beautiful.
It has some sort of freedom, it's not as linear as LoS 1, which is nice.
Negatives:
Story is trash.
Final boss is trash.
Combat is ultimately flawed and annoying as hell because enemies LOVE to spam unblockable attacks.
Those red armored guys should rule the world because apparently fkn dracula can't kill them and he has to go around sneaking like a bish and avoid them.
The rat mechanic/sections is a horrible idea.
Pan's brother is annoying, his entire section is trash.
LoS1 and Mirror of Fate are way better than this game. I don't recommend this game, there's a reason why this game killed off the LoS franchise. Buy those other two games instead, and if your curious give this one a try, but you've been warned.... I still love and hate this game.
