Candle ist ein Puzzle Adventure mit knackigen Rätseln. Spiele als der junge Teku und begib dich auf eine gefährliche Reise, um den Schamanen deines Stammes aus den Fängen des bösen Wakcha-Clans zu befreien. Doch der Weg dorthin ist gespickt mit Fallen und schweren Prüfungen. Um diese zu bestehen, musst du deine Umgebung genauestens beobachten und Zusammenhänge erkennen, andernfalls findet dein kurzes Leben ein jähes Ende.

Aber Teku hat eine besondere Begabung: seine linke Hand ist eine Kerze. Nutze sie als lodernde Fackel, um Gegner in die Flucht zu treiben, oder Details besser zu beleuchten.

Wundervoll handgemalte Aquarell-Zeichnungen verleihen Candle einen ganz besonderen Charme. Alle Hintergründe, Charaktere und Items wurden akribisch am Zeichenbrett entworfen und Bild-für-Bild eingescannt. Dadurch fühlt sich das Spiel zu jedem Zeitpunkt an wie ein lebendes Gemälde.

If you do not play 100% exaktly the way the developer wanted you to do it is not possible to make any progress. Some items can only be discovered by reading the walk through. Issues with bugs and malfunktion of keyboard.

Candle ist ein Spiel für alle Rätselspielfans. Die Schwierigkeit der Rätsel finde ich ausgewogen. Sie sind weder zu einfach noch zu schwer. Aber Candle bietet nicht nur etwas für die grauen Zellen, sondern ist auch etwas für die Augen und die Ohren. Der Aquarell-Grafikstil ist wunderschön und etwas ganz besonders. Die Szenen und Charaktere sind detailliert und mit viel Liebe gestaltet. Der Soundtrack untermalt das ganze perfekt und bringt einen so richtig in Abenteuerstimmung. Ich fand das Spiel außerdem sehr spannend mit einer Prise Humor und habe es innerhalb von zwei Tagen durchgespielt. Normalerweise bin ich nicht so ausdauernd, vor allem mit Rätselspielen, da diese leider auch oft schnell langweilig werden.
Manche beschweren sich in den Kommentaren, dass man oft stirbt. Aber ich finde, wenn man ein bisschen nachdenkt bevor man etwas tut, kann man das reduzieren. (Wie im echten Leben XD) Wenn man aber neugierig ist und alles ausprobieren will (einschließlich aller möglichen Todesarten), wird man oft sterben. Aber ich finde, das Sterben gehört auch ein bisschen zu dem Humor des Spiels und empfand es nicht als störend. Ja, speichern hilft, aber man muss auch nicht so übertrieben oft speichern, wie es hier manche darstellen. Die Steuerung mit dem 360 Conrtoller funktioniert sehr gut, mit der Tastatur hab ich es nicht ausprobiert.
Fazit: Das Spiel ist auf jeden Fall empfehlenswert, wenn man Rästel mag und wenn man nicht sofort entmutigt oder verärgert ist, wenn man ein paar mal stirbt. Es ist außerdem ein Augenschmaus und hat einen schönen Soundtrack.

Absolutely beautiful game. I would not have been able to finish it (I would give up of frustration), if I didn't occasionally refer to the walk-through, but even with help the experience was wonderful. Lovely story, beautiful art and audio. Respect to the authors!

I don't mind the trial and error at all, that is part of puzzle games right? Except EVERY error I do results in death making me go back to where it last auto saved, and it auto saves where you last picked a key item, making you travel one or two screens to try to figure out a solution to the puzzle that just killed you, and it gets even worse when you realise the puzzle have more than one way to kill you and send you back to the auto saved spot.
This could be fixed by simply ressurecting the player on the same screen they died and making the interactible objects more visible, but as it is right now I just can't force myself to play anymore. Which is a shame cause the art is wonderful and the characters are adorable.

Genre: Puzzle Platformer

On the technical merits, this isn’t a bad game. It has a unique visual style, a creative world and interesting lore. The game falters on a design perspective in 3 major aspects.

1) The visual style makes it difficult to give the player proper feedback in what to do and where to go. Many key elements are blended into the background environment making it difficult to see clues or items.

2) Too many puzzles are too obtuse to solve. Key items are too hidden, there are hidden ledges and secret walls so searching for what you need becomes overly difficult for no reason practically forcing you to use a walkthrough.

3) The controls are very stiff given that certain sections of the game require some good platforming.

Conclusion:
A decent puzzle platformer but there are just too many other games in the genre that does everything better.

A gorgeous game with a cool plot! Never encountered any bugs, just a few puzzles that were so hard I thought they were bugs. I got it on sale and I could absolutely say it was worth every penny, even if I paid full price. Fun, beautiful, and challenging, which is all you could ask for in a game!

Pretty graphics, boring story.

Gods great, humans greedy by nature and evil from birth, humans' creation also evil by nature. It felt like some medieval religious indoctrination, really. (You know, your existence itself is a sin so be good and know to your heart that you are nothing if you don't worship and will burn in eternal hell and things like that.)

So old and meaningless. Sure, people can be bad, but what meaning does that statement even have when they just turn to o-so-perfect-and-almighty-and-good but everything the gods do here is press the restart when the world feels totally fxxxed up for their liking. Yeah so people in this game made a mistake making something, but no need to go so fatalistic about it. Jesus. When people fxxx up I prefer to see PEOPLE trying to clean that up and be good, and religions can be a part of that too, since beliefs do hold great power. But in this story the 'hope' is not the people who believe in good (through religion or not), it is just straight up gods-are-great. I had a very hard time feeling any connection to this storyline, so this game was just places and puzzles for me by the end.

But the gameplay was okay. Repetitive and tiring at times, but okay. I used a controller and controls felt okay, too. The story was so pointless but i guess it was just a theme anyway. And I liked the graphics. Not the animations or the speed of the cutscenes, but I liked the overall style of the arts.

Oh and by the end the shaman suddenly starts speaking in English, in the narrator's voice, with no quotation, and that really hurt the consistency. I was really liking how the characters speak.

It's unfortunate that I cannot recommend this game. Candle is a gorgeously drawn puzzle-platformer that is simply far too frustrating to enjoy without a walkthrough. And walkthroughs are, of course, boring.

The main cause of frustration is the poorly indicated puzzles. Hard puzzles are great! But in this case the difficulty is not due to having to think, it's 100% due to the game's inability to convey your options. The tutorial shows you want you can do ... but that's only a small percentage of what you can do. You need to find secrets in the environment, so get ready to bump into every single wall and jump on every vine and try actions that you've tried before again because next time they might work and maybe you thought it was impossible but actually it's possible this time just because.

I guess people with infinite time and patience to bang their heads against walls can solve these on their own, but some of us would rather play a game and not a self-trolling device.

Also frustrating are the stealth elements. Yes, there is stealth-action in this game, and it's horrendous and unnecessary. Enemies spot you instantly, kill you, and then you have to try the whole thing over again. You sometimes have to wait a very long time for a window of opportunity. It's neither fun nor clever.

Even the occasional platforming can be a pain because controls are imprecise and slow and it's too easy to fall instead of jump and then you die and have to start over.

This is sad. Again, the game is gorgeous and there is a charming little story behind it all. But it's simply too often an unpleasant gaming experience.

Story seemed interesting enough to finish and play through it but the CONTROLS ON KBM ARE AWFUL!!!!
It is literally unplayable so it will forever be stuck in my catalog of unfinished games.

The puzzles themselves are kind of hard but depend of the person. So, If you are someone who stresses very fast you could get frustrated. Finally, I can only say that this game is pure art (story, soundtrack, graphics, etc) and you can get all the achievements quickly.

Graphic is ok and the game at start is ok. But it is sometimes to hard to be fast enough not to be catched.
This is very annoying when you can't get to next scene. There is no other way or any help to overcome difficult situations. I tried it again and again and again, and now I'm really frustrated.
Thats why I can not recommend this game., sorry.

I *want* to love this game. It's beautifully rendered, has an interesting storyline, and some quite creative mechanics. But I find it completely inaccessible- I have a condition that affects my fine motor control to a certain extent. This is almost never a problem for me in video games, I can play most things with no problem. The puzzles are not difficult to solve for me intellectually, rather, I cannot manage the *extremely precise and rigid* timing required to even make it past the first stage. I know the world doesn't always think of disabled people and everything, but there is no reason a game can't be created with different degrees of ability in mind, allowing more people to enjoy the game regardless of limitations such as mine. I'm really disappointed that I can't even adjust some settings to make this game more playable for me, as there is no option to customize controls. I want to love it, I really do. But how can I love a game that's impossible for me to play?

I really really really wanna like this game. The art is so stunning and clearly there has been a lot of care and love put into this. However, it has some serious flaws that make it hard to enjoy, so I can't in good faith recommend it.

I don't have anything against hard riddles. In fact, I was super stoked by the first one I had to look up, because in hindsight it appeared fair and actually quite clever. However pretty soon after that the game sadly starts to suffer from some serious moon logic and hidden places that are downright impossible to find if you don't look up the solution. One area I couldn't even find using the solution until my third attempt, and I have no idea how anyone would ever think to look there, especially since you don't even know that you're supposed to be looking for anything.

Another really annoying thing is the dialogue system. The characters talk through poorly paced visuals that take forever, can get triggered multiple times and are unskippable. When the animation is finished, the narrator repeats what they just said, making the whole thing pointless.

Finally, the controls are very clumsy and movement is frustratingly slow. This is coupled with some precise platforming, too. It's not undoable, but the game would have worked much better as a simple point & click adventure (although I did like the stealth scenes and the fact that you can die a lot).

If you're drawn in by the art and don't mind using a guide, you will get something out of it. Maybe even a lot. Again, there is so much potential in this that it hurts. But if you're all about gameplay and solving riddles, I sadly have to say skip this one.

The art and music of this game are just amazing, every hand-drawn scenario is so pleasing to see that I like to replay the game every now to then just to watch it all over again.
The game-play is quite simple as you might expect from a puzzle game, you can move around the world, interact with objects and items, and use the power of the flame to progress.
The puzzles themselves are also good, some are quite hard but (to me at least) not hard enough to become frustrating,
I'd strongly suggest taking a look at it to any puzzle and/or adventure games fan.

I despise platformers—the endless dying because I didn't hit the right button at just the right time is not my idea of a good time. That's why I play adventure games. Candle is, unfortunately, a platformer disguised as an adventure game. Big disappointment.

This game has what has to be the absolute worst controls in any video game I have ever played. Beautiful graphics, but having to press shift, the home key (<-) and space to run and jump is ridiculous. No mouse support whatsoever. This could have been a really fun game were it not for the terrible controls.

I pushed myself to play this for over six hours, and almost the whole time I was frustrated for various reasons - things were unclear, and not in a fun puzzle game sort of way, and it was slow and clunky (especially when TRYING TO jump, as others have pointed out). If you have a ton of patience, by all means try it as it looks nice, but I was pulling my hair out in the end, and apparently I didn't even make it half way through.

It's been a long time since a 2d adventure game made me have so much fun. I have not finished it yet but I am already on the third act, but I can already say that it is a great video game. All the puzzles are logical, neither easy nor difficult, and the graphics are beautiful. The control is good, and it works perfectly with my Xbox controller, which I appreciate, as I am not a fan of point and click. And I got it on a sale for just under $ 2.
Beautiful, fun, addictive ...
Highly recommended.

Awful controls. No seriously, the WORST controls I have ever seen in years in a platform game. I only played half an hour and died like 5 times because my character refused to jump even though I was pressing space. Game looks beautiful and all, but does it even matter if game is unplayable?

Whilst it is wonderful to see a small studio bring a very different game like Candle into being, I sadly cannot recommend this game. My partner and I played it all the way through together and found the experience ultimately frustrating. My first surprise was that it is a puzzle platformer, NOT a point and click as it may seem from the trailers on steam. This is not a problem in and of itself - Candle has a lot of good things about it including an interesting and unique story, but the gameplay killed it for us. Most of the level designs are so unclear that we had to look up them up after at least half an hour of bashing our heads against the wall. This combined with poor character control left us exasperated.

Pros
-Beautiful artwork
- Interesting character design
- Good music
- Interesting and different plot
- Cool NPC interactions and narration

Cons
- Janky unresponsive controls (Teku will never jump where you want him to. Most deaths are because of this)
- Level of puzzles were either easy, or made difficult because the goal was unclear.
- The traps are not obvious and usually not repeated not allowing for any in-game learning curve. It's frustrating dying over and over just to understand what you can and cannot touch in each new room.
- Background and foreground designs are the same - you will find yourself jumping off platforms into nothing multiple times trying to reach the background.
- Hidden switches behind what seems solid background in non-intuitive places leaving you stuck for ages

Candle is a very colourful and graphically unique game, but is let down with clunky controls. It took me a long time to get through the first chapter of the game because you need to save frequently, especially after difficult gameplay. I played on keyboard and it surely must be better with a controller. You have to be very precise to action certain segments which can be rage inducing!
The story is ok, but quite violent in parts. You play as Teku, a Shaman's assistant and your boss has been kidnapped.
You learn about the origins of Teku's people and their beliefs. Puzzles ranged from easy to difficult and some dexterity is required, so not good for clumsy people like me. The cutscenes were very long, sometimes going on for 5 minutes! The real downside was the communication between characters. The dialogue was explained pictorially and then translated by a voiceover. If you hit the wrong button by mistake, the dialogue started over again and you couldn't skip it!
There were no hints at all, so a guide/walkthrough was necessary because some pathways were completely hidden which was unfair. This is not an easy game to play....quite difficult in parts. Some of the achievements were quite obscure. There is a lot of backtracking to get certain items, but there are also a few fast travel platforms to use.
This is not a bad game, just poor gameplay in many areas. The graphics are really beautiful and music was very fitting. You meet interesting characters and confront some nasty baddies. Very original in design and concept. Good game length.
Recommended. Buy on sale. 7.5/10

Could have been good, but they decided to put more effort into graphics than polishing the gameplay.
The controls are clumsy and sluggish, and so already bad enough without pressure, but at one point those misguided, in what fun and entertainment is, decided to add time limits or timed events as well.
Every easy tasks is a potential death trap. And that's why I perceived it very frustrating. When even simple moving through otherwise safe areas is made unnecessarily, artificially hard to harvest more game time, you know which studio to avoid buying from in the future.

The best parts for me are of course the beautiful animation and colorful designs on Candle's unique world and characters and Teku's super cute <3
one thing that bothers me is that the button response are not fast enough which is a bit irritating for puzzles that rely on the players quick reflex.
Candle is an absolute feast for the eyes.

Alright, overall the game is not bad. The Graphic is really cute, as is the story so this might be the main reason to purchase this game. My issue was the the gameplay was pretty frustrating and it's not that the puzzles were hard, which I liked pretty much but rather that the controls are not that great and the Animations were way too long. You die very often because you couldn't chain jumps because your Character stops after the first jump. The 2.5D paths are taking forever to cross with no way too skip which is pretty annoying if you finally know what you should do and just wanna get further into the game.
Another issue is, that this is way too short. There are only 3 levels which take their time since they are hard, but 7 hours to finish it is pretty short considering it's price.

In conclusion, if you consider buying this game, if you are looking for a cute game with a cute story and aren't looking for good gamplay go for it. Do not otherwise

This has some frustrating aspects. The story isn't very interesting and is strangely violent. Most games of this sort have the protagonist incapacitate his enemies, but this one he just goes around on a killing rampage. But the other main problem with the story is how it has the slowest cutscenes I've ever been forced to sit through, and not just the cut scenes but also the dialogue in general. This is odd and worth explaining. When you talk to somebody, first you must watch a sort of silent movie with rudimentary drawings showing you what the person is saying. This is very slow with every stage of it staying on screen far longer than needs to be, but as though that isn't enough, then the narrator slowly explains what you just saw. I think maybe the concept was to only have the pictures but maybe in playtesting people had trouble decyphering them. But having both was definitely not a good idea. Other than that the story is rescue the princess (shaman in this case) with the bad guy sort of based on the Man Who Would Be King, I suppose, but it doesn't really make sense in this case since here he was invented by some shamans to be king, rather than someone from a more civilized world. I don't really get what would make him (it?) drunk with power. Why does it have any desires other than what the shamans imbued it with?

Outside of the plot, the game is generally good. I suppose it's side scrolling adventure game in the footsteps of something like Dizzy. (I'd say not as good, but it is probably better since you can pick up more than one inventory item at a time.) But there are some failings here too. Including blind jumps that would normally kill you being required to proceed, or having a false wall you can walk through. In a Metroidvania game, these things would hide bonuses like extra missiles, and then it might be fun to find them. Here, they were twice the cause for me to go to a walkthrough, and in one of those cases, I inadvertently saw the solution to a puzzle I hadn't put a lot of thought into yet. there are myriad smaller problems like timing for interacting with enemies not being quite what you expect, or way too much back and forthing between the caves and the blacksmith in the forest level. This is a game with some fast travel platforms but I don't think they are ever in useful places.

But I suppose I do sort of recommend it. It's not as though there's too much competition in this genre and if you want to play a platform adventure game with the focus on puzzles rather than platforming, you'll probably enjoy yourself more than be frustrated. Also while the story is tedious, the art is very pleasing.

Graphics and story are so nice. It seems a simple game..but its not. There is a lot of effort behind (im a game dev too).
If you like to smell and taste great athmosphere and mood... the game is for you.

The pictures on the store page made this look like a fun game. It is not.

While the game looks nice, there is nothing to indicate which platforms you can use and which are part of the background that you can't use. To make it more frustrating, in order to jump up to a platform, you need to be just under it's ledge and jump straight up; you cannot walk or run and jump to grab on to the ledge.

The controls are unbelievably frustrating and physically painful, at least on the keyboard. There is no mouse input, not even in the menu. To make the controls even more frustrating, it will seemingly randomly miss some inputs, some as jumping, and it seems to reset the inputs when moving from one screen to the next (so if you were holding the shift key to run when leaving a screen, you will not be running when you enter the next screen, even though you're still holding the shift key).

The actions you need to take are far from intuitive and in my experience, there is a lack of consistency regarding your actions. For example, toward the beginning of the game, you have to stand just under a ledge and then run toward a wall to avoid being squashed by a rock falling from above you. I did the same exact thing five times, and I died four times because my character refused to move when I hit the control to run. I had to watch a walkthrough to confirm I was doing the right thing and the game just wasn't accepting it.

In my short playtime, I encountered insta-kills which were so completely unintuitive that it boggles the mind. One such example was a creature grabbing me with its tongue (like a frog) and eating me, even though the creature was smaller than me. Another such example was a spike trap that was not visible before I jumped onto a platform, but it insta-killed me as soon as I pulled myself up onto the platform.

Overall, the lack of direction, and even more so, the frustrating and painful controls, caused me to give up after less than an hour. This game is simply too painful -- mentally and physically -- to continue to play.

It's a fun enough little puzzle game, but get a bit frustrated when the solutions to some of the puzzles are 'jump off this ledge that would normally kill you except in this case there happens to be a hidden platform you couldn't really see. If the alternative is blindly jumping off ledges all the time, I'm going to have to read a walkthrough which breaks my enjoyment of the game. Some of the puzzles also require you to enter a certain sequence, and I still have no idea where these sequences can be found, again I just had to get them from a walkthrough. Would enjoy the game a lot more if fewer of the puzzles require a walkthrough to solve them.

This game is just Amazing

It's been quite a long time since I've played any game reading walkthorugh xd
Okay I admit that I am noob at puzzles. But still I wanted to finish this game. The story, the soundtracks and the artistic environment was thrilling and enjoyable. I was so amazed by the graphical art that i went for all the achievements too.
Now question is do i recommend this?
Hell yes! But instead of buying this game alone I would suggest to buy the Daedalic Artist Selection Bundle. I actually knew about the developers from their another master piece series

Silence & also Silence The Whispered World

These 2 games made me fell in love with the developers and convinced me to buy the whole bundle and Believe me it was worth every penny. If you are looking for some different 2D artistic games the bundle is a must. Also you can wait for the sales. They give good discount on the bundle

I really want to recommend this game, but it was just too painful to actually play.

8/10 - Visuals and story
3/10 - Gameplay and puzzles

When I first installed it I thought it was going to be a point and click game, but the mouse does not work at all in this game, it's actually a platformer...kind of. It has full controller support, but sometimes action buttons on the controller would just stop working. On the other hand playing with just the keyboard is really painful for platforming elements. The controls are slow and clunky, but there are a number of more precise timed platforming puzzles, so even after figuring out the solution, you end up dying several times just trying to fight the controls to complete the solution. Getting around is slow even with a sprint key.

As far as the puzzles themselves, I just started using a guide whenever I got slightly stuck after a while because there were so many puzzles where I had no idea what I was even trying to do, or what room I could make progress on. This was somewhat caused by how minimal the game is in terms of dialog and text, it's not like you can talk to people to get useful hints because only the narrator talks about a few things. I also kept forgetting about the candle flare ability at key times because you use it so little.

I did want to finish the game because it is very pretty. The environments are beautifully colored and rich. However this sometimes went against the gameplay because the art hid some interactive elements and made the allowed paths difficult to see, resulting in extra fall deaths and having to redo progress. The story is fine. The narration is nicely voice acted. The characters are cute. But ultimately this game was just really held back by it's actual gameplay design, so I can't recommend it.

Enjoyable, although sometimes frustrating experiance.

+graphics!
+mostly well made, balanced puzzles
+funny achievements

-main character is incredibly sloooow
-sometimes you need a pure luck to progress (finding some hidden stuff seems kinda unfair)
-lack of hints when you're stuck

AWFUL gameplay and controls. The puzzles require both speed and precision, which is really difficult for no reason when the controls are so clunky. Yuck. The game is pretty, but not worth it.

This is a very beautilfully hand-painted adventure puzzle game. I enjoyed most of the puzzles although some puzzles were a bit obtruse. My main criticism of the game is that the controls are not well implemented. My XBOX controler was not working properly out of the box as input from several buttons was not recognised. Tips found in the Steam forum did not work for me. I had to remap several buttons but after doing that the B button would not register a long-press so I could not extinguish my cancle. Therefore I had to use the keyboard instead. The movement of the character is also painfully slow and controlling jumps needs a lot of getting used to.
Some puzzles were hard to solve simply because of the finicky controls. On more than one occasion I could not solve a puzzle after trying out every possible approach I could think of, so I had to look up the solution in a walkthrough only to find out the solution was something I had tried (several times) already but for some reason my first attempts did not work. The crushing boulder right in the beginning of the game is an example.

Despite it faults, I still enjoyed playing Candle, so I certainly recommend it to all fans of puzlles platformers.

I really love the art and the puzzles. however the controls are really anoying and make no sense whatsoever. the conversations also take longer than needed since you can't really understand what's being said anyway and it's just staring at a picture at that point. so if you like puzzles get the game, just get it on sale.

I almost always complete the games I start, but I could not bring myself to finish this one. The controls were clunky, the movement really slow, the narration boring and the story indifferent. The hand drawn environment is pretty, but not enough.

Has nice visuals and some interesting puzzles.

But evrything gets destroyed by the controlles. Sometimes it just don't want to respond, this is most annoying when you can't jump and then falling into pits or else.

Well yes. Candle looks amazing.

But the character movement and interaction is so off tune it gets annoying. Environments move while the narrator speaks, so if you
accidentally trigger narration you are stuck, and miss your cue.

There's no actual clue to what is interactable, what is a tunnel, and what is just plain texture in the environment.

The puzzles aren't really puzzles, they are more of a waiting game. And if you are a millisecond off, which you will be since the character moves off tune with the rest of the environment, you will probably die and have to redo a bunch of things.

What triggers me the most is -- despite the bug rotation -- is that you cannot backtrack through the areas. Once you've completed an area you can't go back to claim achievements. Unless of course you do multiple saves and jump back in time. I really thought we were past that multiple save phase.

Don't get me started on the world's longest credits.

Charming puzzles and platforms adventure. The graphic style is lovely and the music accompanies quite well the story.

Unfortunately, the controlls awkwardness ruins a bit the experience.

The puzzles don't make any sense. The game doesn't autosave before a time-trial puzzle and there are no save points, so you'll get stuck for hours repeating the same jump over and over again because the jump mechanics is awful.

Could have been a reasonable platform puzzler if it had a been more casual in nature. But you keep dying every 30 seconds and the voice over narration is incessant and keeps holding up the gameplay. The controls are clunky too.
