The fact that this game end credit animations alone are more historically accurate than the whole Cod vanguard campaign should make you buy it instantly.
Keep in mind if you play this game on the harder difficulties it becomes like playing dark souls since the game doesn't have regenerating health like newer call of duty's

Pros-
#1.I bought/beat this game when it was around 1 year old on cd so nostalgia
#2.It ran fine on windows 10
#3.There was people playing multiplayer
#4.Shooting the instructor in training
#5.Getting to hear German
Cons-
#1.Graphics look so old
#2.Forced to go on certain paths
The Bottom Line -
It is crazy how big COD has become and I never thought it would based on this game. The graphics are the main reason not to play it but otherwise it still is worth $3 or so.

Campaign is split into two parts, in the first you're playing as the Americans and British whereas in the second one you play as Soviets, which also shows the terrible leadership of Stalin, where commanders would shoot their allies in the back as soon as they wouldn't want to forcefully go into the fight without any weapons or defenses.
From a brief server check, multiplayer is still alive and working, there's just not that many people playing this, especially as there's 18 more games in the main series with who knows how many more spin offs. While short it's still overall a great game, especially if you prefer somewhat more tactical approach on the shooter games, as this is the only CoD game that plays this way.

War is Hell.
This is Genesis, the birth of the proverbial 800-pound gorilla known as Call of Duty. At the time, it seems pretty unlikely that Infinity Ward knew what they had created, or how far it would go and how big it would become.
Call of Duty was unique, in the sense of featuring a campaign where you play as an American, British and Russian soldier in alternating missions, while all pushing for the same overarching goal of crushing the Nazis. While it may lack a mission as impactful as the storming of Omaha Beach, or Sniper's Last Stand (ala its erstwhile competitor Allied Assault), but it made up for that in quality, consistency of said quality and the sheer pace. There is hardly time to breathe: one moment you are in a bomber shooting down enemy planes, the next you are in a tank trying to fight your way through to the main battle, and before you know where you are, you are on foot and pushing for the next objective for the war machine.
While the use of briefing screens based on real mission/tactical data is inspired, and the authentic locations and weapons add to the sense of realism, it is the sound which really steals the show. From the rapid-fire chatter of the MG42, to the ominous movement of tanks, to the shellshock from nearby explosions, the sound design immerses you like perhaps no game before into the terror of war, and makes you feel like you really are there. It is telling that this particular Call of Duty title was largely focused on single player campaigns - but there are still multiplayer lobbies out there today (although you will need to downgrade to v1.1).
The game is perfectly playable in its vanilla state, but if you are looking for some enhancements, consider downloading the HD Texture Enhancement pack from https://www.moddb.com/mods/esrgan-texture-enhancement. A word of warning however: I ran into problems when using it (specifically, the game crashed with Hunk_FreeTempMemory: bad magic), but I managed to resolve this by deleting the Sky pack and leaving the rest intact. As ever, use with caution and your mileage may vary. Other recommended tweaks include widescreen resolution and adjusting the FOV accordingly, both of which can be done easily.
Even today, 18 years later, it is still a great game. Yes, the price given the age is absurd - but if you grab it on sale you will not be disappointed.
Played on Windows 10 Pro x64 without any issues.
P.S. Veteran difficulty is the only way to play.

--The characters' have personalities, voices are realistic, and their lips move accurately
--The level design for a game this old still holds up and has LOTS of variety.
The gameplay is solid; in my own experience sometimes aiming down the sights felt janky due to fiddling with the fps
--The artificial intelligence is good; most of the time they tend to rush towards you in closed spaces, and sometimes they have incredible aim on higher difficulties
--I really enjoyed the based-on-true-story events; the production of the historical pictures during the time of the war gives more authenticity that way
--The graphics are very good, didn't really have a lot to comment on them.
--The sound and music design, my GOODNESS. Michael Giacchino has produced music for some Medal of Honor series and it's great to hear his work in Call of Duty. Sound is superb.
Overall, it is DEFINITELY worth your time.

One of the many WWII games but the first one to actually claim it its own, if not, the first game to perfect it at the time it came out, the graphics are surprisingly good for a game of its era, the sounds design is also good and the voice acting is incredibly and surprisingly better than you might expect for a game of its age and kind.
I love how the game dynamically changes the art featured in the main menus the further you progress into the campaign and how background music slowly builds up as you take down Berlin.
The difficulty in this game can present quite a challenging feat in and of itself, labeled “Veteran” is not by any means overstating itself, but instead drops you into a war zone with nod medics, no regeneration, and pretty much, 2 / 3 shots K.O at most.

This is by far the best Call of Duty Campaign
Being the first entry into the popular series, this game really does amaze me. It's one of the first games I ever played and replaying it with the nostalgic memories makes it a memorable and enjoyable experience. Performance-wise, the game has occasional FPS drops and the resolution is set lower than 1920x1080 by default. However, this is easily fixable - there are many guides available for it as well, doesn't even take a minute. Otherwise, no complain for the performance of the game. You get a perspective of the Soviets, British and the Americans in this game. The battles in the game are historically accurate and it withholds an interesting story. Play it.

For nostalgic reason I bought this on Steam in a package deal and played through it again. The single player mode has aged well for team-based maps, but not so well for the solo maps which feels like Wolfenstein 3D with better graphics.
The defense of Pegasus bridge on the highest difficulty is still one of my personal highlights in the CoD franchise. The relentless (but believable) pressure from the Germans, the frantic dash to cover multiple fronts, the desperate struggle to stay alive, and the heroic music that keeps you going just as you begin to lose hope. Everything comes together beautifully for this map. It left a deep impression on me when I first played it, and I still enjoy replaying it now.
9/10 with nostalgic bias. If you are playing this for the first time now, probably 6/10.

The campaign is split into 3 sections, the British, American, and Russian campaigns. Each section offers unique missions and objectives set in and around the European theatre. The campaign is rather short though and can be run through pretty quickly
Because of the fact this game is so old graphically It’s very basic, same goes for the movement. (Leaning but no sprint?) However, the game still plays remarkably well despite this.
I have had issues with widescreen resolution but it’s easily resolved by using a resolution lower than your system’s default
For a game released in 2003 it still feels fun to revisit every so often.
Would recommend - 7/10

*nostalgia alert*
This was one of the first PC games that I can remember playing. My dad got into computer gaming because his buddies at work were all electrical engineers. I think he was more interested in pushing the hardware than the actual games themselves. I had consoles and handhelds growing up, but we were always a gen or two behind the current, where we were always at the bleeding edge with PC. I fondly remember Quake (my favorite being Quake 3 Arena) and Return to Castle Wolfenstein.
For the psychology majors out there, I played these (at the time) pretty gory and intense games at the age of about 10 or so. IIRC we got our first family computer when I was around 7 ish but I think before Wolfenstein I just played Humongous games, Jazz Jackrabbit and a ton of educational games. And I basically lived on an NES/SNES emulator with hundreds of games. I can still remember taking the CDs out of the giant CD case and listening to the disk whine as it spun up into memory.
I played a ton of games growing up, but anything on the Quake engine was basically guaranteed to be a 10/10. People will probably forget now because the standards are so insanely high, but I think most people basically played a ton of trash or middling games and then when you'd get an experience like Call of Duty you were just completely blown away by it. While likely unable to impress many now, Call of Duty one was your gateway to experience all the WWII nostalgia that arose from the 50th anniversary of the War.
As a kid, I don't think I fully understood the significance of WWII or where all the hype came from. All I knew was that I grew up in a strange time where you could watch Band of Brothers and shoot off an M1 Garand with my grandfather, then come home and play Call of Duty all in the same day. There really was no way to escape WWII in those times, and thanks to the emphasis on historical authenticity I basically knew more about WWII at the age of 12 than your average adult.
The late 90s and early 2000s were basically the golden age of WWII FPS because of the above context. And what ended up happening is that EVERYONE started making WWII shooters. It really did become a problem. By the release of Call of Duty 3 (which I didn't play) everyone was pretty burnt out on them which is why my personal favorite in the series, CoD4: Modern Warfare (2007) had to happen. So if you've been paying attention, all it took was about about 3-6 years for WWII shooters to go from the darling of FPS gaming (which FPS was THE genre of the time) to the most stale and hated sub-genre in the gaming community. Any mention of WWII would be met with pained and agonized groans of disdain. So if you ever want to know how to kill anything good, just do it to death and over saturate everyone with something until they get sick of it, which is basically what happened to the entire CoD franchise.
The last CoD I played was MW2 (2009) and by then I was already burnt out on the series and weary of the direction this once beloved franchise was heading in. The influx of a new breed of degenerates in multiplayer being my biggest reason for abandoning CoD. In CoD1, the multiplayer essentially equated to random chaos. It was fun and there was essentially no reason to play other than that you enjoyed it. Now there's a million carrots and weapon upgrades and unlocks and prestige mode and it's all gotten kind of stupid imo. We traded nail-biting multiplayer in game modes like Search and Destroy for weapon skins and loot boxes (*glares at CS:GO* you're next pal).
I think this is something that is lost on modern multiplayer in general (see: World of Warcraft) but back in the day people didn't need a reason to do things. People played games because they were fun, immersive and engaging. It was a bit more pure than today. You didn't get anything for doing it. You just wanted to do it. It was literally the most exciting thing you could be doing at the time. Fuck the real world, you HAVE to defend this bomb like your life depends on it. People would be sweating in anticipation as you stood for minutes in silence, only to hear the crack of a sniper and watch your team mates name appear on the screen. Headshot. Damn, they got him. Now there's only 4 of us left. Shit is that footsteps!? Grenades! DUCK!
Nobody called your mom fat over the most complex web of technology in human existence...they had to type it in. You actually had space to think and didn't have to listen to little Billy get scolded over the mic. It also proved you could actually read, another feat in these trying times with ever shrinking attention spans and a constant obsession with bigger, louder, faster, hell just make it MORE obnoxious! (see: Boarderlands 3)
Ahh, but my age is showing. And my nostalgia for the past that I've now remembered longer than I lived it is probably beginning to grate on the two of you still left reading. I have fond memories of this game and this once loved series gone astray. The gaming community has changed drastically, which is vital to its evolution and growth, but I do hope someday we can get back to the kind of excitement and enthusiasm that went into making and partaking in a game like this. It was a zeitgeist that I'm happy I was a part of. It's probably my version of the 60s or Woodstock for the boomers out there.
Either way, I hope that people don't forget about the games that made gaming what it is today. If you never played the originals, or got into the series at a later time, do check this out to see some of the roots of the series. You'll miss out on the pure multiplayer and the obnoxious rainbow-font, L33T speak names, but multiplayer still works if you're curious. It's not the same community anymore, but you can get a peak into days gone by thanks to the diligent preservation of gaming's past. Thank you to those that worked on getting this to run on current gen systems and getting this on Steam. It's important.
***Speaking of preservation GOG has Medal of Honor: Allied Assault War Chest for $2.50 US right now***
If you played this you are hereby obligated to play Allied Assault, that's an order soldier!

Best thing in the game is the music and sound. Music is really fits for the game and it's memorable. Fits for the action, either you are in hard situation or you are just going through a building, the game find you with it's nice soundtrack. Sounds are okay in the game, sometimes however goes bit silent and you can't change the music sound and SFX separatly, which leads to some weapons will be really loud sound. This is the brightest part of the game still.
Let's see the gameplay. You get briefing in thr Singlr Player either from the... briefing room or from your diary or other text based source, and from these the player know, what is happening in the mission, what is the goal and how the war is going. This is really important in the game and I like it. Maps and missions varied, not just with it's looks, but the objectives too. You will explode tanks, cannons, getting documents, hold positions and lot other. For it's time, it wasn't boring at all, but it's still good now days. Fighting against the AI and the guns in the game is okay at first. AI seems to go to cover, throw grenades and every soldier can die easily. Teammates seems to help you in hard situations too and most of the weapons seems balanced out and useful... but if you play on higher difficulties, you will find out, your brother in arms are useless, except few who is important in the game, often let the enemy flank you, not clearing rooms properly, meanwhile the enemy AI is stupid too or have insane reactions on the mentioned higher difficulties. You get different weapons on each maps (most of the time), however you can pick up other ones too from your teammates ir from.the enemy, but I usually played with rifle - machinegun combo (Faction related rifle / sniper rifle + MP40 (or Thompson), because you won't need anything else, either those are useless or you won't find ammo for those guns (on higher difficulties). Pro tip: use grenades most of the times, because AI can't react to it too well. Either die to that and not run away, or it run away, but to your arms. I need to add to the weapons list the tanks, which you can play with for two maps. The controls of those things is not that bad, feels heavy for sure and it's also makes the game interesting.
At gameplay, I need to mention the multiplayer, which was one of the best in it's times, but it's still good nowdays, too. Fun gamemodes, action packed gameplay... sadly I couldn't experience this in it's prime, but sometimes there are servers where there are few players, so I suggest you to check it if you can!
I don't have lot of problems with the graphics, except the usual ones (models go into grounds / each other, looks outdated), but for a 2003 game, I don't see the problem with it. I still like how it looks, btw.
I mentioned the difficulty, and I wrote about the AI, which is very mixed. There are 4 level of difficulty in the game. I can recommend playing on Medium if you want minimal challange, the easiest one is really about slam the AI to the ground... however Veteran can be hard, if you expect to find medkits and weapons often with ammo... which you can't find it. I played through the gamr on Veteran in 5 and half hours, so the game is not that long at all, which is not that big problem actually, it's good to get used to the multiplayer.
Controls works fine in the game, you can configure it properly... but my biggest problem with it, was the mouse sensitivity., maybe because of my high DPI, but on the lowest sensitivity, the game was still too sensitive for me... plus if you change the sensitivity and you play with a MG42 or any mounted weapons, the sensitvity will be the default one, which the game set fot you at the brginning, which was hell.
There is not a huge story in the game... except of the history of WWII, but on some missions, there are story lines between characters, but not really worth to talk about those. You can live without it.
If I want to be honest, if you want to see how COD started or you want to nostalgia with the game, you can buy it... but to be honest it's really not worth it for the current price. I like the game, I give the credits what it deserves, but seeing this game after 17 years, it really didn't aged well with the graphics, stupid bugs and mistakes in the gameplay, if I trying to be honest with you. Buy the game for the mentioned reasons only and ONLY if it's on like 50% sale, otherwise just try to get COD 2... trust me, you won't miss too much.

This game came out and 2003 and I remember it so vividly. It felt like Band of Brothers or Saving Private Ryan the game, and I was totally engrossed and in love. I was a freshman in high school and a friend at the time was always going on about how great it is and how it had amazing multiplayer (something I didn't really bother with until a while after the fact). He was right. It was, and more.
The original Call of Duty serves as a fun way to see where it all started and how Cpt. Price got his entry to the series. Activision really knocked it out of the park with this game and the series exploded in terms of popularity of the years. The story and plot are far more shallow than I had remembered, but luckily the game doesn't suffer too much from it as it focuses on fast, action-packed gameplay.
The handling, aim, and controls all still feel quite good. AI still auto-aim in nearly every situation and even the player's aim is questionably sharp, but that was the style for the time - for better or worse. The audio was outstanding for its time and still holds up in 2020. The quality of it really stands out compared to other games of that time, especially in terms of its surround sound. Vehicle missions or sections are a blast. I remembered being really excited by all the explosives usage throughout the game, back in the day, but today in replaying the impact of the graphics and physicals no longer provide for a wowing experience. In fact, it's no longer even notable other than being an objective within a mission.
The amount being charged for this game, and every other in the series, is still too high. Even when on sale it seems questionably high for its age. I think this game fits squarely into the $5 category. $20 is scoff-worthy.
I still hear arguments made today rather the original Call of Duty or Medal of Honor were better. Call of Duty wins that distinction easily.

However I can't recommend this on Steam because it has some technical problems on new operating systems and trying to solve them is more than I want to bother with. Also whole Call of Duty franchise is too expensive on steam than it has any right to be.
Don't buy this unless you are nosthalgic, want to try old games and can look past/bother with technical issues.

Nice to go back to the start of where the COD franchise begins, actually pretty good play through and story so far and very surprisingly there are still people playing on their multiplayer servers too!
Definitely worth picking up.
Thanks to Valve and everyone else whom makes it possible to play on Linux.

But is it worth the time? Yes. This original Call of Duty still holds up surprisingly well so many years later. Sure, the graphics won't blow you away, and there's some glitchiness. But its setup is great and it's worth experiencing in comparison to the number of churned-out FPS games there are nowadays.
I started the series with Call of Duty 2 back at its release, so I only just returned back to the roots with the original this year, and it was a nice title to play.
