Walters gerät in Lebensgefahr.

I do not suffer from insanity, i enjoy every minute of it

Is this game flawed? Yes. It has all kinds of flaws even back in the day. But for it's time it was a beautiful game with an intense atmosphere. Even revisiting it, it feels creepy and dark. Imo it's the best Lovecraft game out there.
Don't buy the 2021 version, it's a walking simulator compared to this gem.

Game itself is one of a kind - - full of tension and genuinely scary moments. The obscenely low FOV combined with the scale of the world in relation to your characters deceitful vision only adds to the overall surreal nature of the game.
Recommended if you can tolerate (or just flat-out love) jank and have a tendency to fall for cult classics. More specifically, I recommend this game if you enjoy Condemned, Pathologic, Penumbra/Amnesia, Lovecraft and survival/stealth horror.

I very much enjoy the atmosphere, plot, stealth, simmy gun combat, levels, etc. I have a recollection it might be a bit of effort to get it running on a modern machine, but I think its well worthwhile

The gameplay is pretty mediocre all in all. Theres good and bad parts, I feel like the gunplay is actually pretty good and that the shots feel powerful against enemies and when the enemies shoot at you. Though the enemy AI is pretty awful and depends on how it's feeling at the moment. The worst part about the mechanics is that there is no running in the game and there is no objective marker. Those two were the biggest frustrations with the gameplay mechanics and it usually tends to get you stuck if you don't know that theres a specific object you have to interact with which isn't displayed in any way.
The atmosphere and story were actually the best parts throughout the whole game. From start to end I know that I'm playing a Cthulhu Mythos game just by taking in everything around me in the level. The story is fine and dandy too. I know many would complain why Jack is this typical hero when those are rarely found in the mythos though he does play a big part with the Yithians and madness does still creep into him when he starts putting the pieces together. If you can tolerate having to download patches, versions and use cheats to complete the game, then do try it out if it's on sale and you enjoy that lovecraftian feel. Though because of all the negatives, I can't really recommend it to the average player.

It is an obvious classic worthy of attention and playing it you can see just how much care and polish its designers imbued into it's scripting and gameplay.
The horror atmosphere is unique and beautifully executed,
the use of the genres tropes and tools is INSPIRING,
the story and characters were engaging and well written,
even the gun-play was FUN and felt well designed for its purpose.
But it's all wrong.
The game is riddled with bugs, it's at times difficult to engage with it's smaller elements (such as vaults, puzzles and that FUCKACTED CANON!), it lasts simply too long and the unskippable horridly long cutscenes are a kick in the nuts.
I suggest to you this reader:
If you care for the genre, if you are a designer or a critic or an art student - play it. Treat is as a course in the art - it is WORTHY of being called that.
If not, if you're just looking for a good time playing an horror game, leave.
I'm sorry, Call of Cthulu. I really wanted to love you. You deserve that. But I can't.

However
DO NOT PURCHASE THIS GAME ON STEAM. STAY FAR AWAY
I wish I had read the steam reviews on this game, I hope I can save one person from buying this game. Call of Cthulhu is so heavily riddled with bugs, I couldn't even complete the final escape section. If you really want to play this game, get it on xbox. Do not support a platform that requires an unofficial patch to make its game playable.
I regret even spending less than $5 on this game it really is not worth it because the devs are too lazy to patch their own game. I don't care how old it is, show some care for the products you make.
1/10
note: as someone mentioned, regrettably the company went bankrupt in 2006 so i retract that last part.

its also a hidden gem that literally nobody played.
this game was made in the smartest and most engaging way a video game can be , back at 2006 when i played it for the first time it scared me sh1tless and it aged very well to this day it still serves a great experience, sadly it didn't get the attention it deserves due to gaming community biasing around mindless shooters that time.
due to the studio closing down shortly after releasing this game , it have some compatibility issues with modern systems , so you will have to do 2 things to make sure your experience go just right :-
1-you need to download the unofficial patch 1.7 ,here --> http://dcotetools.sucklead.com/p/dcotepatch.html , patch the game and most importantly is to 'tick' the bug fix second box which is under the legacy blue light bug . this patch will make sure you can bypass the chapter 7 boat bug which prevent progressing , so its mandatory that you do it.
sadly not every feature in this patch is open in steam version due to it being restricted by steam drm , especially the fps lock , so if you wanna force a vsync just do it from your video card control panel
2-you need to download a widescreen fix which is available here ---> https://thirteenag.github.io/wfp#callofcthulhu
this will open the wide resolutions for you to set and fix some stuttering (and you will need them in case of a wide monitor)
copy the content to the engine folder in your game available and when launching it will give you every resolution 2 times , make sure you chose the second one for this to work.
note : the resolutions available are up to 1080p (1920*1080)
after doing these 2 things your game should play out normally without problems , enjoy.

Pros
+Realistic gameplay
+Old style find your own way progress
+Fantastic Atmosphere
+Story
+ Good graphics when you consider its launch year(2005)
+True Horror and adrenaline
+Audios
Cons
- Horrible optimization , finished game before in an old pc , now you cant even launch in newer systems
- Game breaking BUGS , seriously those bugs may cause cancer in your body
I recommend reading the book instead of playing the game. You will definitely be healthier and more satisfied. I only recommend the game if you have already read the book and ready to bear bugs.

Unfortnately, given the age of the game, it is bound to graphics that have not aged well, in addition to LOTS of bugs and glitches, some are game-breaking. You are FORCED to use patches otherwise several parts you will NOT be able to complete or pass on a modern computer. This even includes the ending, which frustratingly forces you to 200% your running speed via cheats. It's hilariously broken. However, despite the issues this game possess, its breath-taking slow-paced and engaging gameplay makes you ignore those issues. If I had to compare for example, it would be like Vampire: The Masquerade, where the game is really broken and unpolished but the incredible character development and story makes up for it.
This game is a must-play for anyone looking for a slow-burn FPS horror experience with a crispy gun play.

If it was just a clunky average FPS, I'd be fine with it, though. But this game is buggy to a point where it literally cannot be finished without fan-made patches and even then, you need to be super-careful because there's like 12 different ways of softlocking the game during the 6 hours it takes to finish it. Only purchase if you're a die-hard Lovecraft fan that likes self-harm, cause this game is a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ torture.

You have been warned.
Buy it on GOG...that version is properly fixed. This is yet another game in my list i ended up buying both on STEAM and then again on GOG :S
Regarding the game:
A very entertaining adaption of 'The shadow over Innsmouth'.
Bleak setting, oppressive atmosphere and a good mix of adventure and action/ investigator gameplay.
Too bad these Lovecraft games never really been commercial hits.
Woulda loved to see the sequel/ adaption of 'The Mountains of Madness' , which was supposed to become some Nazis invoking Elder Things in the Antarctica plot.
Naturally the game shows that it was released in 2006. Not so bad, if only it would work.
But the STEAM release of this is botched up beyond repair. With very much tweaking and fixing i managed to make this run back on Windows 7...but it still kept crashing and the performance was terrible. On Win 10 this would not play at all for me.
So once again, buy it on GOG!!! They did the homework and you also get Elder Scroll Arena and Daggerfall along with it.
(any Bethesda game on GOG nets you these classics for free).
Verdict: Great game for fans of the Lovecraft universe!

when the doors close behind you.
when the game just crashes for no reason and your last save is like fourty mins ago.
when you get to the 'shoot those enemies on the coast with this canon of ours' part but they are fucking invisible.
when the enemy that should die with second hit still stands after emptying a mag into him.

First up, if you wanna play this game get it at GOG and not here. The Steam version is a disguised eldritch horror!
From the couple minutes I have played, before it crashed on me the first time, it looked fairly decent. Not technically stunning, but the developers put some effort into it. But it's published by Bethesda and the way they (not) support their games is legendary by now.
I don't want to download a bunch of community patches and look at guides to avoid game breaking bugs just so that I can play this game. And I don't feel like paying another 5€ for the GOG version either. Unfortunately I bought this a long time ago in a sale so I can't refund it. It's another stain of shame in my gaming pants.

I've read that there are a lot of bugs on the PC port; I haven't played through it yet myself, but this game is 100% worth doing the legwork to find fixes for. Especially if you are a Lovecraft fanatic, you don't want to pass this up. You'll explore genuinely frightening moments primarily from The Shadow Over Innsmouth, but with heavy doses of The Shadow Out of Time and more.

I have to say that don't go into this game expecting something akin to one of Lovecraft's stories word for word, while it deals with the same themes and even one of the same characters this game is a bit of Lovecraft salad. You get bits from The Shadow over Innsmouth, The Call of Cthulhu, The Shadow out of time, Dagon, At the Mountains of Madness and even some references to The
Whisperer in darkness. In execution the game is much closer to something like Call of Cthulhu or pulp Cthulhu on table top. I would call the game lite cosmic horror and not true lovecraftian horror.
When it comes to the actual game I will start with the negatives. The shooting is mediocre at best but is tolerable due to the excessive number of weapon variations, it can get tense however when ammo starts to run out. The AI is not that great and ruins stealth opportunity and makes the game easier then it should be. The graphics are serviceable most of the time but if you are playing on high brightness (don't do that) it wont look that great. Now onto the positives. Greg Chandler does a fantastic job with the soundtrack of the game making a unique and creepy soundtrack that adds to each moment and really emphasises the horror or the tension. Nearly every environment in this game is fantastic and where the graphics might fail the atmosphere and tone really make up for it and go beyond, So many of the locations and environments really make you feel like you are in the dark corners that Lovecraft wrote about and the developers did a great job with them. Those very environments compliments the Adventure/investigation gameplay which has you explore these environments for clues or to escape the claws of the shadowy cults and alien beings.
If you want to enjoy Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth go into it not necessarily as a horror stealth game but as an Adventure game with a side of horror and you will enjoy it much more.
I give it a 7/10 for its fantastic world, soundtrack, decent graphics and adventure gameplay and being mostly faithful to HPL's works.
PS. if you get the steam one only play on windows 7 or lower, and that is pushing it.

An unfortunate title that starts promisingly, but quickly fades into near total absurdity.
Call of Cthulhu: DCotE is a beloved game to many people, and its easy to see why. The game is one of few set in such a universe that is full of great potential, and there are some truly good ideas that are within the experience, even if for me they were few and far between.
Sadly, I can't in good conscience recommend DCotE as flawed as it is, in terms of gameplay, story, and especially with the amount of problems it has technically. DCotE misses the mark for quite a lot of things, and its turned out to be one of the most frustrating games that I've played in recent memory.
To start with the few things of positive note, the prologue and the very first parts of the game in general are quite well done. It is within the first couple of hours that the game has a recognizable identity and atmosphere that works. The first arrival in Innsmouth is a highly enjoyable, genuinely creepy, and successful opening that the game never recaptures again once it is over. The whole game takes a lot of its plot from the Shadow Over Innsmouth story itself, and a side by side synopsis of the two will tell almost the same exact story with a few things changed.
The game gradually becomes a little more tedious as you progress, and its when you first start being hunted that the game starts to show its real colors a bit more. It becomes apparent a number of times throughout that you have to do things exactly how the game wants you to do it, otherwise it can bug out pretty easily, sometimes pathetically easy. There are some quite difficult sections of the game though that on difficulties above the normal one seem straight up impossible, and even on the normal difficulty the game will feel like its deliberately trying to get you angry over its occasionally bad design.
I'll be the first to admit that I am not a master of Lovecraft's literary works, but I have read summaries in the past of the most well-known of his stories such as the original Call of Cthulhu and Shadow Over Innsmouth. So how does the game treat the original source material and build from it? Well, it is simply disappointing. The game, at least past the halfway point, presents itself with little to no subtlety whatsoever, and its almost as if someone had their 13 year old write part of the narrative for them.
At about the 50% mark, the game just completely stops trying to be survival horror of any kind and turns into a half-arsed shooter that is lacking in almost any challenge. It gets to the point where you'll literally be shooting up the elder gods themselves and mowing down small armies inside underwater abodes with an infinite ammo energy gun. This is partly what I meant by the issue of subtlety. It feels like a straight f*cking shaft to the whole point of Lovecrafts themes and stories, a betrayal to the existential horror and sense of cosmic hopelessness that made it what it was in the first place. It simply treads into silliness, and the atmosphere is tainted.
As for the story, it doesn't really offer much value, and while it's a decent use of the Lovecraft mythos, it's really quite simplistic at the end of it all. The protagonist isn't all that interesting, and a part of it perhaps is his voice acting and overall dialogue. The voice acting for the game in general is good enough, but for the main character something feels missing. It's odd, because for other parts of his performance he successfully captures a frantic and slightly insane side, but for the most part, I feel there's more that could've been put into the role.
As for technical issues, DCotE is infamous for its issues on computers that didn't exist around the time it originally released. The game really struggles with newer machines, and numerous times throughout my playthrough I had to get past issues. It was bad enough that I couldn't progress past the final boss, and I had to watch the final few scenes soon after. It is important to note that my game was unpatched, so if you plan on purchasing this game, I would highly recommend searching for patches to fix most of the game's problems.
Overall, Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth really disappointed me, even with its cult following. For me, it just doesn't provide a satisfactory Lovecraftian experience, and it left a terrible taste in my mouth after seeing it through. If you're still keen on purchasing it however, then I would say its best on a sale.
