Game puzzles: somewhat challenging, very enjoyable. Not esoteric to the point where it's unsolvable without a walkthrough, but will require some time to plan out.
Game story: can't say I was super engaged, but I enjoyed the ending. Since it seems like something of a Super Mario parody, I doubt there was meant to be much story to begin with.
Overall: excellent puzzle game, but don't hold your breath for the story.

My thoughts
I think everything about this game is just fascinating and wonderful, from the gorgeous painted art to the mind boggling puzzles. The soundtrack flows excellently and its just perfect for the atmosphere and setting the game tries to deliver. I would go as far as saying this is my favorite soundtrack ever, listening to it always calms me and reminds me of the peaceful moments of the past.
In my opinion, even if you are not the biggest puzzle game fan, I recommend this game solely for its art and music. You could use a walkthrough on youtube and simply appreciate the effort put in to making the puzzles and have many 'Aha!' moments on parts you were stuck at. The time manipulation mechanic of the game is brilliant and really fun to use, and each world
(there are 6)
has a unique aspect to it which I will not talk about since you have to experience that yourself.
Flaws
There are a few flaws I can think of, like how some of the solutions to the puzzles are pretty obscure at times and may be impossible to figure out on your own. The story can feel pretty strange and vague as well, which I think the game was going for but its not for everyone. The mechanics of the specific world are explained at the start in the first level with a simple demonstration, BUT I would still say its vague. With these in mind, I recommend getting Braid when its on sale, since it only goes for a few bucks at most and in my opinion, its an experience worth having.
Braid is a timeless game, in more ways than one.
Really looking forward to the anniversary edition, cant wait for it!!
I give this game 10 puzzle pieces out of 10.
TLDR: Get it on sale, fun game (probably my favorite).

To get all the achievements you also need to complete a speedrun of the whole game. I managed to do that on the third try. Not sure, if the game benefitted from that. I guess it forced you to actually understand the puzzles (or learn them by heart) to be able to reproduce the solutions that quickly.
The extra collectible stars are basically impossible to discover and really hard to collect. And one of them is extremely annoying as you have to wait for two hours to get it. Not sure if they actually make the game better, but it is what it is. You can just comletely ignore them.
Overall, I can definitely recommend the game, but beware of the speedrun, if you aim to get all achievements.

The levels themselves range from simple to incredibly puzzling, though the curve for most of the worlds is forgiving enough so that most people will eventually be able to complete the game with a bit of perseverance. There is a bit of a need for platforming precision in some levels, however, especially if you're going for all the secrets.
Narrative-wise, Braid is rich with symbolism and various ways to interpret the game. While later games have done this sort of thing better, the ways Braid defies different standard game conventions and presents itself is still charming enough despite its age being apparent.
One shouldn't really buy Braid if all they care about is the length of a game, since Braid is more about the experience and uniqueness of its presentation. In that regard, with its unique premise, fantastic visuals, and great soundtrack, I don't think you'd be disappointed in checking it out.

Information / Review English
Braid falls into the Platform genre, which was developed by Number None.
Gameplay / Story
The game is presented like a classic two-dimensional jump ’n’ run and at first glance shows a lot in common with Super Mario Bros. The game character is Tim, a male with a suit, red hair and a red tie. Tim can run and jump, climb up and down ladders, vines and bars, pick up keys to doors and carry around with him, and operate switches to move platforms; Opponents are defeated by jumping on them. The overview map of the game is Tim's house and its forecourt, shown as a longitudinal section (like a doll's house). In the house there are different rooms that represent the accesses to the six worlds. In each of the five rooms there is a large, initially empty picture on the wall, on which the puzzle pieces of a world appear. In five worlds this ability must be used to collect twelve puzzle pieces each. In order to reach the last world in the attic, all puzzles must be put together correctly.
Braid doesn't follow a classic linear narrative. Unlike most video games, Braid doesn't start in the first level either, but goes backwards, i.e. backwards. H. played through from the end to the beginning without the player being aware of it at first. In each cloud room there are several text panels that make it clear at the beginning that Tim is looking for a princess who was kidnapped by a monster because Tim made a mistake that he is trying to fix. The action-related aspects within the level are limited to the fact that the princess cannot be found there. In the further course the text panels provide complex, vague to incoherent perspectives on Tim's motivations, the princess and Braid themselves.
Pro
+ unusual story
+ amusing Mario bonds
+ charming presentation with time manipulations
+ relaxed background music
+ Achievements
Contra
- no assistance
Conclusion
Braid offers you crisp time puzzles that are creative and charming at the same time.
Information / Review Deutsch

The rewind mechanic is absolutely wonderful to use, mistakes simply get reversed in a few seconds, and you can keep playing like nothing happened. Accidentally missed a jump? Rewind back to try again until you make it. Died to a goomba? Rewind and kill that sucker. Not only does it take away the punishing aspect that most platformers have, but it allows the game to implement so many wonderful concepts and mechanics that push the limits of what you're capable of using this rewind feature. I don't want to spoil what any of the puzzles or mechanics are, but this game really goes above and beyond with providing fascinating lateral puzzles for you to work your brain around, and when you eventually finish this game, you'll feel like a mental champion.
While this game isn't too dense in gameplay, it is extremely dense in potential. Once you grasp all of the simple mechanics, you could easily beat the game in less than an hour (in fact, one of the achievements is to do it in 45 minutes). However, there are so many potential ways of optimization that you'll find yourself accidentally speedrunning the game just by finding new methods to beating older levels. Even after you've fully understood everything there is to know regarding the game and its puzzles/mechanics, you'll still keep coming back just to master them even more, or to try to beat the game faster than you have before. This game never gets old to me, and everyone I have shown this game to feels the same way.
Trust me, this is more than worth your money.

Time is somewhat twisted for the protagonist. Is he living in the present, past or future and what exactly makes him the way he is?
He is somewhat lost in himself. The story that is told is beautifully illustrated. Still to this day I like to revisit the game in my memories.
Some levels are really hard to solve. Using time by playing it forward and backwards can be really tricky. You have to adapt to it. But the difficulty did not make it any less fun.
If you like a good challenge and a story you need to analyze and interpret yourself, grab this cheap but great game.

One of the best puzzle games I have played.
It is a platform based puzzle game BUT puzzles are all based on time concepts. The game involves rewinding time, having objects unaffected by the flow of time, even having alternate versions of the player and much much more.
That is all the reason you need to play the game.
Further, the art style is GORGEOUS, I love the water-paint texture and music (violin) is great as well.
The story is complex/a bit abstract and is NOT told chronologically. I recommend researching on different interpretations of the story after you finish the game.
Note- The last achievement for the game is speedrunning through entire game within 45 minutes. I thought it was too much at first but ended up enjoying the whole process.

Recommended by a friend, took me far too long to get around to this game. A decent length of time in gameplay, perfect in terms of maintaining concentration and interest without exhausting the theme (or driving the puzzler utterly mad with frustration) this game had a surprising level of depth despite it's 2D platformer style.
The narrative indicates more than what we see as well. A fantastic game well worth playing.

Each world brings some new time manipulation option, making it impressive that the creator was able to think of such things. Even more so when looking at the story. But it doesn't matter whether the story is clear to someone or not, it is still quite fun.
Music is on par with the rest of the aspects, beautiful as ever, one of the best among game soundtracks, listening to it outside the game at times...

11 years later, I finished Braid 100% in 6h across 4 days, without looking up the solution to any puzzle. This game is hard, but highly rewarding. But it's really not that hard: Because of the steep difficulty curve, and the introduction of a different mechanic in each world, many puzzles seem very intimidating on first and second glance. But with some time, some experimentation, a clear understanding of the mechanics and some fresh thinking (not wanting to solve everything on the first go helps, as does not expecting the puzzles to be obvious), you can easily (eventually) figure them all out. 100% recommended if you like challenging puzzle games, otherwise you will get really frustrated with this game.

Back then, it was so perplexing and awe-inspiring, that I promised to play it again in a decade after I (hopefully) forgot all the solutions (or most of them). And the second time, I thought, I would do it without using an FAQ (ONLY used it for two puzzles during my first playthrough!!). A decade later, I have finally made it through.... and, oh boy, what a journey!
Overall, Braid holds up well thanks to its unique time-rewind puzzle mechanics, its odd and obscure narrative (more on that later), its beautifully crafted background art, and amazing, music. The music in the game turned me into a long time fan of modern new age instrumentals, and a HUGE fanboy of one of the artists who's music is featured in the game, Jami Sieber, who's work I hunted down online and listened to over and over.
Coming to the puzzles, I felt I could solve them with much more ease 10 years later, despite forgetting them. Perhaps because my subconscious retained some of the memory, but also because I have played many puzzle platformers and puzzle games in general since I discovered braid. Also, coming from The Witness, designed by the same person but much more complex brain burn, I felt my brain was already well wired for solving the different puzzles presented by the game.
10 years ago, I really struggled with the puzzles, but I managed to solve all of them (except two) without a walkthrough. Sure, it took me about 10 hours to finish the game, instead of the average 7-8 that people were reporting online, but I made it. I think the puzzles are not so much about intelligence, but rather approach.
First time around, I approached most puzzles with brute force, using trial and error and coming up with different ideas to test out. Every puzzle presents you with information/visual cues which you can use to test out different approaches. Maybe you must use a certain platform way up there, maybe one of the little gnome thingies need to get somewhere for you to solve the puzzle, etc. Almost every platform, object or enemy is relevant and not just there for no reason. Most puzzles often require a fresh perspective, so it might be a good idea to solve one or two at a time, rather than rushing through the whole game. Just sit back, look at the screen, listen to the relaxing music for a while. Maybe you'll get it... it'll just hit you.
A lot of people claim that Braid is nothing special, seeing it as pretentious, taking itself too seriously. This is either due to the perceived difficulty or obscurity of the puzzles, or the narrative style and the 'message' of the game. I found the narrative style to be very intriguing, a puzzle on its own. And to clarify, the developer himself has said that there are multiple meanings and themes, and there is no one message that can be easily explained. Braid is more about the journey rather than the end, much like it spiritual successor 'The Witness'. This player's opinion is that people have read too much into the game and taken the game too seriously. It is, primarily, an aesthetic and cerebral experience that cannot be really described in words.
Braid rightly deserves to be considered one of the absolute best and genre redefining titles of its decade (2000-2009). The critics were always right on the money on this one. And I'm afraid, the detractors and naysayers are wrong. This game changed the way I, as a gamer, perceived games and gaming industry, and it also inspired many designers and games that followed.
A solid 9/10.

Braid used to be famous. Crazy famous. It was the game that popularized the whole concept of indie games, back when the only real choice we had was between the latest overproduced western AAAs and obscure, niche Japanese games. The world has changed. Is Braid still famous? Is it still worth playing? Look, what do you want from me? I dunno.
What I can tell you is this: Braid is one of those indie games with its head lodged well up its own ass. You know the type: the pretentious platformer. It's very, very interested in telling you a story. But beyond that, the game is actually pretty solid -- less of a platformer and more of a puzzle game, where you hop from platform to platform while maniupating the flow of time in order to solve puzzles and progress. The story, which last I checked is somehow meant to be a metaphor for the Manhattan Project (a metaphor I have exactly zero interest in pursuing) is, thankfully, very easy to ignore, as it's mostly told in the form of text windows, prompted by pixely books placed on pedastals (now there's the game's real metaphor) that you can run right past.
Personally I found the puzzles to get old fairly quickly when I first played the game, way back in the day, and I lost interest even faster with the Steam version. I dunno. Maybe it's not for me -- I am not the biggest platformer fan out there, and definitely not the biggest puzzle platformer fan. That said, the very catchy music (which sounds just as good playing backwards while reversing time) is ample enough reason to pick the game up, I think, by itself.
Note: also played on Microsoft Xbox 2.

So do I recognise Braid's importance to indie games and video game culture? For sure. But I don't really recommend it unless you know wholeheartedly that you want to play one of the most innovative and therein most challenging puzzle platformers available. Braid's difficulty won't be for everyone, and there's nothing wrong with that. I don't have the drive to finish it personally and that's why I don't recommend it.
