In the interest of fairness, this review also comes with a couple of caveats. The first is that I am reviewing the Steam game as it is today (18th April 2022) in its entirety. I say this because Blood Bowl 2 had a disastrous launch with an underwhelming roster of teams and very little addition of features upon Blood Bowl: Chaos Edition other than a simple UI and graphical overhaul. I also want to make clear that I will not be referencing the tabletop game as I haven’t played it. Unlike many digital ports of tabletop games, I suspect that the digital version is actually the better experience because it automates a lot of the dice maths and table referencing that would take up a lot of time in tabletop, at the very least it’s considerably cheaper.
The other major caveat is that most of my time with Blood Bowl 2 has been spent playing in leagues with a group of friends, making light social occasions of the weekly matches and collectively reinforcing the emergent narratives that the game creates. I think this has significantly improved my experience of the game. Playing with a small community of committed players plays well into this game’s strengths and I would highly recommend that people who want to try Blood Bowl do so alongside a group of friends or make an active effort to integrate themselves into one of the publicly available, organised leagues.
However, this has also given me a vantage point from which to view and understand by proxy the experience of new players trying to come into the game. This is the first and foremost reason that I struggle to recommend the game to most people. Not only is Blood Bowl 2 difficult and frustrating to learn by virtue of being complex with lots of mechanics and rules to learn, but the heavily random design also heavily blurs the line between good plays/tactics and bad ones.
Randomness in games, or RNG as it’s commonly known, in games is often maligned. There is a persistent misconception among a large portion of that all competitive multiplayer games ought to be pure tests of skill whereby all outcomes are entirely determined by the actions and choices of the players. I feel that this has come about largely due to a slew of games in the mid/late 2010s that were rightly panned for reliance on random elements to provide a false sense of depth and variety (think Hearthstone, lootboxes, FIFA etc.)
Blood Bowl 2 is an excellent counterexample to the idea that elements of luck always serve to lower the skill ceiling and floor of games. Despite the outcome of almost every action being dependent on a dice roll, it is a game about weighing up the risks and rewards of those actions, prioritising effectively and careful positioning.
The difference in teams’ playstyles, the variance inherent in the randomness, the long-term implications of each match on your team and the turnover mechanic combine to create a huge range and frequency of small but important decisions. Should I take that two-die block first knowing that I won’t be able to pick up the ball if I fail? Should I move my player to assist and make a block easier or do I need to keep him in reserve to sit in a particular spot? Should I move my player into base-contact with an enemy forcing him to make a dodge roll to get away knowing that I am risky getting my player injured? A menagerie of factors influences every decision, and even though the outcomes of those individual decisions are decided by dice rolls, you make so many of them over the course of a match that better players can reliably realise their skill advantage over weaker players.
This random element, though used well, is still a double-edged sword. Though there isn’t an issue with skill expression or win rates in most games, the extreme ends of that spectrum of results are both still frustrating for at least one of the players. For example, a typically brittle Wood Elf team can go a whole game without ever having their armour crack, or a stout Dwarven team can suffer multiple crippling injuries in the early turns and be forced to play the rest of the game outnumbered. A keen and skilled specialist Human Thrower can fail a simple one space pass while a slow, clumsy Khemrian Tomb Guardian might accurately bomb it halfway down the pitch.
Moreover, the randomness makes the game hugely more difficult to learn because sometimes good results originate from bad decisions, and visa versa. Additionally, it becomes extremely difficult for players to accurately understand and appreciate their skill level, because it doesn’t correlate precisely with their results. Bad results can be misattributed to bad fortune just as good ones can be misattributed to skill. It is an intensely difficult psychological barrier for the average gamer to overcome and with each match taking well over an hour, I believe it no surprise that many players never move past this to find the fun.
The core issue with Blood Bowl 2 is that even though the game is largely enjoyable once the player has gained sufficient understanding and mastery of it, the process of undertaking most of that learning is difficult, time-consuming and frustrating, and the game does very little to support that process.
The solo content of Blood Bowl 2 is competent in teaching the core ruleset of Blood Bowl but worth very little beyond that. There’s some fun themed scenarios and you do get a feel for the differences between the teams, but the AI is so poor and the game so unwilling to explain strategic concepts to the player that I feel it is lacklustre content compared to the multiplayer.
The teams of Blood Bowl are diverse and creative, and this is one of the game’s biggest strength. Each of the 24 teams now available (although many of these only available as DLC) has a unique, distinctive playstyle and game feel. All of the teams exist on a spectrum between teams that are fast and agile but brittle, and teams that are slow, but strong and resilient. Considering this variety, Blood Bowl 2 is relatively well balanced and most of the teams feel roughly as strong overall as one another. The exception to this is a handful of ‘handicap’ teams who are deliberately made much weaker than other teams to allow for more unorthodox designs and playstyles. I like this inclusion a lot, it provides skilled players an enjoyable optional challenge and enables interesting and unique designs in a safe, non-game breaking way.
The only problem Blood Bowl 2 has in terms of balance is in the individual matchups between teams. Several teams, or teams built with specific sets of skills, have a handful of extremely difficult or extremely easy matchups that can heavily sway the outcome of a match before any other decisions or dice rolls are made by the players.

1. If you are playing this game without ever having played a previous version of blood bowl, or having played the table top game, you may not have fun at first. Be sure that you are willing to learn all you can about this games rules, and tactics, before you play against people online. Please look at this list from cknoor youtuber who explains the game in very great ways. He breaks the game down into understandable chunks for new players to understand. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MV3kQuapaTw&list=PLSJ6kwwJv4Nr-Ky1PaFZys50S7zewio1O
2. If you are one who has to win, and don't like losing, don't play. This game is set up that win, lose, or draw you do get a reward of some sort at the end of the match. You won't always win, just like you won't always lose. I wish I knew this before I started, because I was getting pissed off at the game for what I saw as unfair AI advantage. After watching some other videos explaining the game, and tactics, I now know how to play the game in a fun way.
So is it worth playing, yes, and no. No if you have to win, and you don't learn the rules/tactics first. Trust me, I usually learn by trial and error. Not so with this game really. You have to do your research. Yes, if you are up for just brute force fun, and don't mind losing to a team, knowing you can improve your strategies, and team to prevent repeating an error.

The game is set in the Warhammer fantasy universe. If you know anything about Warhammer, you would know it's violent. If someone plays a match and none of the players end up injured or dead, they probably weren't playing it right.
Blood Bowl may look like a sports game, but it is really a game all about risk management. Think XCOM, just with the RNG turned up to 11. All calculations are done with d6 dice, meaning every single dice action has at least a 1 in 6 chance of failure. Therefore taking fewer risks than your opponent gives you a better chance at winning, but never a guaranteed result.
To summarise, I would recommend Blood Bowl if you can handle some games being unwinnable due to bad RNG.

The endless adding on of races via DLC is annoying - a one-off up front package would have been better, and thankfully legendary edition adds this. BB3 is coming soon - the game DESPERATELY needs a live action mode (like the old NFL Blitz) to appeal to a wider audience, looks like it has a better campaign mode, and the AI can only get smarter, right? But if you can pick this up on sale, you'll have fun!

The die roller/RNG is terrible.
Failing 1 in 36 chances every second time. Failing 50% odds 75% of the time.
Poor programming OR some dice loading built into the background. Love the game, hate the poor dice roller.

All said, pass. Don't buy it. It's not worth the time or money.

The game has okay-ish graphics, good sound design, really good voice-work and a somewhat active multiplayer sphere of players while still having some weird graphical and sound glitches, at times dropping in performance and having a few teams that feel like repeats of others, but that's not where the issue lands. It's rather on the gameplay.
Now, if you go into the Steam Discusions, you're bound to sooner or later, find any thread that talks sh#t over the RNG. 'The game obviously cheats', 'the RNG is busted and bugged' and so on. I'm sorry, but people that say this are f#cking stupid. The issue is that it DOES work. The best way to explain it and compare it would be Rock, Paper and Scissors, or even Poker. There ARE legit strategies you can implement there to improve your chances to win - but that's what they are, they just improve those chances because the whole game is a gamble.
The main issue here is that with nearly the whole game depending on rolling dice, it undermines any kind of strategy you might try to push forward, since any misstep will make your turn be over and given how it's all dice rolls, that's meant to happen sooner than later. Doesn't mean much that you've got a bunch of dwarfs flanking a halfling, that halfling will decide to fight back and suddenly go on a killing spree because the dice said so.
Now, you might be tempted to compare this to D&D because it's all rolling dice, but you'd be mistaken. In D&D, you build your character/s to overcome those challenges with and without things being dependant on chance, AND build said character/s however you want. In Blood Bowl, even leveling up is random and you can't really decide 'I'll build this guy tanky' or 'I want this guy to be one tough looking motherf#cker' because actually rising your stats is one of the rarest things you can get on level up. Made even worse by the fact that in the previous game you could spend money to upgrade the equipment and at the very least get SOMETHING, while in this game I haven't found that (though there is the stadium upgrades, which just influence random events that happen at the start of each round and aren't at ALL as exciting).
What I'm trying to say here is this: The game is bound to frustrate the player at some moments due to the sheer fact that it won't matter one bit what you do, plan or execute. Having strategies does help, but the biggest factor on the game is luck, which sucks as it rather makes it feel like a gambling simulator with a fantasy overlay. Is this the developer's fault? Not really, as they have translated a tabletop game into a videogame VERY faithfully, it's rather an issue with the tabletop game in which is based. Because of it, most people that might glance at this game might end up angry and shouting loudly into the forums, claiming that everything's busted and broken or blaming it all on something else.
If you're not someone that can take this kind of randomness, this game won't be for you. But on top of that there's a bigger issue here - Blood Bowl 2 isn't really that difficult from the previous one, which is still on sale here and cheaper. Sure, 2 has better graphics, a more active multiplayer community and stuff like that, but the lack of mods and/or Steam Workshop so people can add their own stuff, for example, made me come to this conclussion: If you're interested in Blood Bowl, pick up the first game instead. What you'll end up getting is practically the same, and after all, if you're reading this, you're new to the franchise and not a diehard fan.
The game isn't bad, let me repeat, it's just that the previous one has pretty much the same features with a lower price. If you're a big fan of Blood Bowl, you probably already bought both, but if you're looking at reviews, unsure which one to pick, go with the first one and you'll get a feel for what you're meant to expect for a much cheap pricetag (and the chance to refund if you find it not of your liking).
TL;DR version: Game isn't bad, but it's just rolling dices and waiting for the RNG to not screw you over, which undermines actually trying to pull off any kind of strategy. You either endure those f#ck-ups and try to have a blast, or feel frustrated over dices constantly rolling badly when it's your turn. Since the previous game has pretty much the same features, I'd recommend anyone new to the series starts there, THEN considers picking this one up if the concept landed well.

Based on the tabletop game of the same name it has an excellent foundation mechanically. Rolling dice for just about every action turns are all about doing as much as you can while avoiding a turnover. Taking a risky action early may have a bigger payoff, but taking safe actions like movement first can put you in a better position. Positioning is the name of the game here. Outmaneuvering and outnumbering is the goal of the game.
The variety of races leads to tons of options for just about any playstyle imaginable. From agile elves to savage orcs, mutated chaos beastmen to crafty chainsaw wielding goblins. Matches take upwards of an hour and there's a variety of leagues to play in. You could spend hundreds of hours just mastering one race. There's a lot of tactical depth to be had here as you attempt to mitigate the risk of the dice. And boy o' boy can those dice be cruel.

not interested in multiplayer , just single player vs ai , have a pretty good idea of the game play so the campaign wasnt something i was looking for in bb2.
the tournaments which you could set up to compete in chaos against the ai was the winner for me .
you could save under certain conditions , some may look down upon that gamestyle , but that is how i enjoyed playing the game ,
give more options to the single player , expand the tournaments , should i wish to create a 500 team comp that i can set the rules ,save options, and anything else why not ?
do those who play online against others pay more ?
of course not ,
its a niche game and the single player has been forgotten.
drop the whole race DLC , allow everyone to enjoy the game in its full glory ,
make the money by selling visuals , a dwarf blocker for example with plaster on his leg , a troll with a bit of gold hanging around his neck :)
customising your favourite team will bring some money in .
but dont penalise the single player , let us run our own little tournaments while blinging up our troll

For example, in this game you'll have:
- 'Touchdowns' that are worth just 1 points (just like any soccer goals);
- One 'half-time' instead of 4 Quarters;
- A very slow-paced gameplay (opponent's turns especially are excruciatingly slow and painful - devs please fix this);
- Low scoring, just like in soccer (most games will finish 1-0, 2-1, ...or worst: 0-0);
- European-like football stadium chants (which is really not a bad thing);
- British-like commentators (and their legendary sense of humor!);
- And you can bribe the referee! ;p
So if you are a die-hard NFL fan, or addicted to fast-pace action, you may be looking in the wrong direction here.
But if you like the idea of a blend between European and American football in one beautiful and funny game (albeit a slow one), you will discover a very good and very deep strategy game here.
For sure you will 'fume' in frustration at first and you will feel the dices are rigged as your team is initially quite weak and will undoubtedly take a couple of epic beatings (hello reminder: you're playing 'Blood' Bowl here!). But as you'll grow in terms of personal coaching experience, as well as through upgrades and cheats you can buy, you'll start having fun developing strategies, forging wins, and controlling the odds otherwise heavily against you...Which is frankly the main point behind the whole game here!
Also on the plus (+) side, graphics and stadiums look pretty nice, and teams can also be fully customized, from the logo, team colors, players names and upgrades, and multiple races to chose from, etc.!
Replayability is also impressive, with pretty much unlimited custom leagues and playoffs format possible (both online and offline) and a fun campaign mode.
Blood Bowl 2 is also what a second edition of a game should be: i.e. an improved version of the previous one!
And for all these reasons, this game has found a solid place as one of my favorite ones in my games library!!
Have fun !

Attributes and perks make all the difference. They will certainly always work when you need them the most, and you will never feel like an absolute failure disgraced by the poor decisions you've made at critical times, because your players will always perform their tasks exactly as you have instructed them to. Nothing is left to random chance, like say, some random roll of a dice.
Now enough of my yapping; get this game and join the big leagues! I have to point out that, at the time of this review, Blood Bowl 2 is 80% off. Buy it, and let us play together, my friend. Returning players
If you own the original Blood Bowl, should you get Blood Bowl 2? The answer is a resounding depends.
I got this on sale, $9 for the game and all DLC, and I quite enjoyed the original Blood Bowl. And at that price point, it is absolutely worth the upgrade. It's got enough new features, visual improvements, and gory goodness to satisfy anyone who enjoyed the original, and doesn't mind dropping a bit of cash.
On the other hand, if this were at full price, that would be contingent on how much you like multiplayer, how much you want the DLC, and how much a visual upgrade matters to you. If you're a diehard, you probably own this game already. If you're a casual player, I would suggest waiting for a sale. They happen frequently enough.
Newcomers to Blood Bowl
Is Blood Bowl the right game for you? Depends on what you find interesting!
Does the idea of a combination of sports management, tactics, random chance, and lots and lots of gore interest you? How about the idea of American Football fused with Chess fused with Space Hulk?
If you answered yes, then this game is for you. Blood Bowl 2 is unforgiving and cruel at times, but that's the nature of a tabletop dice game. Just like life, the best-laid plans can be shattered with bad dice rolls. Your players will die, get injured permanently, and have other adverse things happen to them. Can you keep going when your star thrower gets killed? Then you'll do fine here.
If you do take the plunge, welcome to the best bloodsport in the world. Your first order of business, in my opinion, depends on your comfort with strategy games like this. If you feel confident you can pick things up on the fly (or you've played other Games Workshop games like Space Hulk), try a few friendly matches offline and see how you do. Otherwise, start with the campaign, which will teach you the basics of how to play Blood Bowl. With patience, practice, and a bit of luck, you'll be doing just fine.

It will leave you a frustrated, bitter wreck of a gamer. But it will also give you some properly hilarious moments and a lot of fun too.
The rules are brutal, they don't forgive mis-clicking an action, there is no undo feature, and there shouldn't be.
It will.... mostly.... reward good planning and quick tactical thinking, but you will also regularly have your most perfect strategy brought crashing down because you some how manage to roll and then re roll 3 skulls on 3 dice. And isn't that just life sometimes?
If you are looking for something that you can win consistently by learning the dynamics, this game isn't that. The best players in the world have been laid low in games by a bad luck roll. Giants in the community have lost cherished star players, veterans of hundreds of games with nary a scratch, to that one nasty takedown and a bad injury roll.
This game is for those people who can laugh at their own misfortune and see the fun despite losing a round, or getting knocked out of a league.
So, other points...
Yes, the animations are fairly limited and repetitive. You can turn the cut scenes off in options.
Yes, the narration will start to get repetitive and boring. You can turn that off too.
Yes, eventually the type of tactics your team use will get boring. Make a new team with a new race. 24 races, 11 players per team (up to 16 on the roster, 11 on the pitch) in multiple categories, with dozens of possible skills to select in fun combinations gives an effectively infinite variation on the unique teams you can field.
Yes, you stand a good chance of losing key parts of your team, that's literally a core dynamic. If that's not for you... then maybe don;t get the game.
Yes, without an introduction the full game can be tricky to get your head around and difficult to figure out. PLAY THE SOLO CAMPAIGN! It walks you through the basics and introduces elements bit by bit in a very natural progression that really helps things make sense. Do not jump directly into the solo free play or multiplayer unless you are VERY experienced with this kind of game.
All of the above applies to the solo play options. However, if you REALLY want to enjoy this game, get together with some friends and start a league. Nip onto Reddit and join the global community. Set up a discord channel, have game nights with a group. Turn it into Friday night football, start a fan club, trade players.
The basics here are this: If you are going to take this game super seriously then you have not at all understood what it is. Its a fun and satirical take on the fantasy genre and on organised sports that most certainly should not be taken the slightest bit seriously.
A final note then. I love this game, and would recommend it to anyone who doesn't have a pathological level of seriousness when it comes to gaming. If possible, add in a handful of friends to play with, but its not essential. And don't trust the Elves.

It's excellent fun as you pull of a risky play that you set up for in the previous turn and everything just comes together for the perfect execution since you know that you should have probably had a turnover for that stunt and you can smile pleased that you got away with it.
....Or you are just as likely to receive the laughter of Nuffle cursing you from above as your star player permanently dies fumbling while trying to sprint just one extra square to grab the ball.
Possibility and chance keep the game interesting even after you grasp the basic rules and have tried a few different teams each with unique strengths and weaknesses. Players level up and gain new skills and of course you can name them, get attached to them and watch them get killed by some stunty halfling getting lucky on an injury roll. Such is the life of a blood bowl player, nothing is ever 100% certain and that risk keeps things fun.
Overall I would highly recommend.

I mean, the game itself is just bloodbowl, with RAW rules, so you get what you expect in that regard. In terms of video game design however, it is really not that good. Especially since it's the Xth installment of the same game.
