I love local Co-Op!

Luckily Rearmed emerges as a great game which smartly retains enough retro trappings while producing a satisfying and challenging adventure. There really isn’t anything quite like Bionic Commando, its core “gimmick” being its position as a platformer with no jump button. Rather you’ll be swinging and climbing about using the bionic arm as a grappling hook. The mechanics are robust enough that the inability to jump doesn’t feel like a crutch. The bionic arm takes some getting used to, with some initially perplexing choices of input. But once the controls click, you can take advantage of some rather slick techniques as well as a solid sense of momentum. Once you’re manipulating your positioning, momentum, and reach to its utmost potential, you can pull off some thrillingly satisfying maneuvers. The challenge rooms and secrets in particular encourage this mastery of your abilities. There’s a learning curve to be sure, but the tutorials and challenge rooms give you plenty of controlled space to work with.
But your abilities hardly stop there. Your arm can grab objects, pull handles, seize enemies, and more. They’re all actions common enough in any number of games, but they give the bionic arm a greater sense of utility, beyond just presenting a solution to Bionic Commando’s core conceit. These are especially put to use in the boss battles, themselves more contained puzzles than challenging combat encounters.
The broad level design challenges your understanding of the bionic arm while also allowing room for playful experimentation. However, this open design can come at the expense of obtuse navigation. There are secrets to be found, sure, but the forward can come off as unintuitive; in fact, I would occasionally find myself wandering into the boss room whilst hunting for secrets. This only goes to highlight the way the game annoyingly respawns all enemies upon re-entering an area. Also irritating was the frequency with which I found myself left to make a leap (er, fall?) of faith because the game didn’t give me a good view of the terrain beneath me. I certainly tumbled into a spike pit or two because of this.
Beyond the core campaign, you’ve many secrets to uncover, namely upgrades to you and your arsenal. While I don’t think these are strictly necessary for clearing the story, they were a nice incentive to continue playing, and there were some enticing platforming challenges and puzzles to overcome to find them, though a few were a tad *too* obscure. The challenge rooms also offer plenty of replay value, with small stages which really test your understanding of the nuances of Bionic Commando’s physics and controls. Pursuing faster times can be addictive, if not amusingly frustrating when trying for that 5-star time on certain courses. I also found they helped me try out my abilities in a controlled environment while I was still trying to wrap my head around the control scheme.
Rearmed sports a couple alternate gameplay styles as well. When navigating the overworld map, you can cross with enemy vehicles, initiating a top-down combat sequence. These are short stints asking you to traipse over to gun down the enemy anti-air vehicle. While inoffensive at first, they quickly became a nuisance, as I found myself clashing with more of these than I cared for. See, more spawn if you game over, and Rearmed isn’t all too easy a game. The top-down segments are just too lacking in variety, and aren’t all too engaging in their own right. This is worsened by the unwieldy auto-targeting, which arrests control of your direction rather pushily. Rearmed also follows the then-modern trend of introducing a hacking minigame. While these can suffer from the same intrusive repetition should you be forced to replay them when you die over and over, the minigame is actually a decently entertaining diversion, a 3D navigation puzzle snappy enough to avoid overstaying its welcome.
The soundtrack nicely updates the source material, and complements the action, while effectively setting the tone of “infiltrating” the enemy territory. The 2.5D visuals remain charmingly stylized thanks to Rearmed’s use of vibrant colors and appreciably simple models lacking in excess detail. On occasion I would find the platforms blended a little too well with the background, but otherwise the aesthetic is lively and appealing.
Bionic Commando is a skillfully realized revival of one of Capcom’s less prolific properties. It puts its core conceit to extensive use while also ensuring the surrounding elements also shine, from the level design to the array of weapons and upgrades you can attain. While not flawless, the game harkens back to Capcom’s glory days of 2D action platforming with aplomb.

Double Dragon should have took notes.
But another $2.50er. I can't recall off hand sale frequency, but Capcom doesn't need your money, and they should make any revenue off volume. Endorsing more version with money or sales might only get us more of that 3D abortion.

I should first mention that I have not played the original and played this on a recommendation of a co-worker, no nostalgia at play.
I respect the Bionic Commando: Rearmed a lot and think it does what it set out to do. However, a lot of people will not enjoy this game and find it stiff, unforgiving, and even broken at times.
This is a remake of an NES platforming game which features no actual jumping. That alone will alienate some players, but the game is rough in other ways. The lack of mid-air control coupled with recoil after being hit, or the unclear messaging in the environment as to what can or can't be grappled make it a frustrating experience, especially since the game features a life system without level checkpoints, requiring you to beat a level and its boss on a single set of lives. Speaking of bosses, they are fantastically crafted and are as fun to learn as they are to beat, truly outstanding boss designs, although it's a shame that they are each repeated a second time.
It's difficult to critique this game, because most of its constraints are intentional design choices, but that doesn't mean they can all be accepted. In particular, using up to enter doorways means that while standing in front of a door, the player can't grapple upwards. Gunplay is featured prominently, and the different weapons you collect are fun and useful, but not being able to shoot up really seems like a poor choice. Again, something fans will surely defend, but as an outsider I found it to be yet another thing that causes frustration, despite adding challenge and forcing the player to use their grappling to solve every situation. That really is perhaps the game's biggest issue, grappling is often a bizarre and unnecessary way to solve problems that any basic platformer wouldn't even have.
A more objective flaw is the map system. I honestly have no idea what the developers were thinking, and this is an obvious instance where the choice should have been to distance it considerably from its NES counterpart. The labeling lacks rhyme or reason and adds confusion to what is essentially a fairly linear progression of levels. As you move from stage to stage on the map, enemies close in on you, eventually producing a top-down shooting mini-game, which should provide a welcome distraction, but is so frequent and trivial in difficulty that its existence isn't justified and further aggravates the experience.
Don't get me wrong, there is a lot to love in this game, but the experience is uneven and there is a steep learning curve for players who, like myself, have not played the original.
The graphics and music are both well above average, and the visuals communicate the charm of NES graphics in a way very few 3D games are able to capture. The overall story is fun and light-hearted, and the cut-scenes deliver beautifully created portraits and snappy, hilarious dialogue.
If you can put up with difficult controls and dated gameplay feel, then you may fall in love with this one. I think it's a good game, but can only recommend it with a caveat: it is often frustrating, but ultimately rewarding.
TLDR: it's everything you love and hate in an NES game, lovingly recreated in 3D.
7.5/10

It's an amazing accomplishment, and one that should be celebrated - but, sadly, it hasn't been, at least not by the company. They haven't even done the basic maintenance required to keep this game current with Windows, and I can't even get this to run. Don't buy it until they fix it - once they do, I'll be so glad to come on here and change my review to a positive one.

On an unrelated note, I had to install an outdated PhysX driver that I found linked on the PCGamingWiki to play this on Windows 10

It's pretty cool honestly, I never had the original game, so yeah, I have no nostalgia blindness. I have no issue with the controls (except I wish it had a jump button) honestly installing the drivers you need isn't really that hard, I still wish that I didn't have to go out and look for the exact driver I need because not everyone knows how to do that.
There needs to be an actual warning about that, someone who doesn't understand that stuff is going to think that they're getting ripped off. But other than that, it works fine once you get the driver you need to run the game.

This remake though? A breath of fresh air. The game is much more forgiving than what it used to be and the dialogue is.... it's okay.
Definitely something to pick up if you're a fan of the original. The boss fights are solid and the level design is unique for the mechanics presented in this game.
Get to work, soldier!

There's a really big problem tho, and that's the game barely being compatible with Windows 10: If you check the steam discussions for the game, you'll see that a lot of people also have had problems making this game run on a modern computer, in my case I haven't even been able to make it run at all, not even the splash screen before the game opens appears.
TL;DR: Game is great, but you'll have to work to make it function in modern PCs.

I like the item-searching aspect of this game, which gives it a sort of Metroidvania feel to the progression. The levels and enemies and platforming... isn't great, but good enough to make for a fun three hours.

Minus the new Albatross of course. That was just boring and above all nothing but tedious. >_< I was looking forward to the whole new level but wow, uninspired level design. It was awful, and anti fun. The rest of the game was fun, wish they kept the original Albatross.
