Über das Spiel
The townspeople of Banished are your primary resource. They are born, grow older, work, have children of their own, and eventually die. Keeping them healthy, happy, and well-fed are essential to making your town grow. Building new homes is not enough—there must be enough people to move in and have families of their own.
Banished has no skill trees. Any structure can be built at any time, provided that your people have collected the resources to do so. There is no money. Instead, your hard-earned resources can be bartered away with the arrival of trade vessels. These merchants are the key to adding livestock and annual crops to the townspeople’s diet; however, their lengthy trade route comes with the risk of bringing illnesses from abroad.
There are twenty different occupations that the people in the city can perform from farming, hunting, and blacksmithing, to mining, teaching, and healing. No single strategy will succeed for every town. Some resources may be more scarce from one map to the next. The player can choose to replant forests, mine for iron, and quarry for rock, but all these choices require setting aside space into which you cannot expand.
The success or failure of a town depends on the appropriate management of risks and resources.

Also schon extrem schlau gemacht.

I figured after getting every achievement i would write a review. i play a lot of survival, city builder, etc. Banished is in its own little side category. Its a very relaxing builder with a few basic things to sort out. There isn't a tech tree, there isn't a story line, no enemies but I have always viewed it as starting a frontier town in wild west.
Its relaxing to play as there isn't any insane factors to contend with. You try new generated maps and try to get enough food and warmth for Winter. That said its also not a game that you can let run and walk away from for 10-20 minutes. The mistakes you make wont be realized until well into the future. Which is fun if you like that planning aspect and a snowball build up of failure.
If you want a hard challenge then look elsewhere. If you want something that's fun/relaxed and enjoy planning a ideal frontier town, then this is the game

YANOGA REVIEW
GRAPHICS - ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆
Graphically Banished is unspectacular. There are only a few house models, the animations are unspectacular. And yes, the textures are simply knitted. But all this is combined into a believable atmosphere which gives this game a unique charm which really hooked with me.
The weather effects – from uncomfortable snowstorms to idyllic spring days – are successful. Multitasking is not a problem thanks to the fully customizable interface, in which you can move and pin any window as you wish. The menus are well structured and clear. In addition, the game runs remarkably smooth.
MUSIC - ★ ★ ★ ☆ ☆
Good enough background music (composed by the developer's brother by the way) eventually takes on an almost meditative character.
STORY - ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆
No Story and no ''real connection'' to your Seedler. Don't expect an emotional connection with your residents; you take credit from an efficient society in which as few people as possible die prematurely.
GAMEPLAY - ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆
This spirited city builder takes you and your capacity for logical, rational thinking wonderfully seriously. ''Banished'' is maybe one of the hardest games in the genre while being one of the slowest. Build to much and you'll maybe not have enough firewood for winter. Grow the wrong seeds and you're will maybe lack in food for autuum. Build a ineffective City in his Design and your Seedler will walk to long paths and don't bring what the city needs. I really liked the challenge and that you need to learn everything by being logical. But after 20 Hours I've build 2 citys and there isn't much more content in the vanilla-version (I'm not the Mod-Guy but the devs integreated a Mod-Support in the Game-Menu!)
WORTH BUYING - ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆
Banished is a brutal but brilliant city builder. The first 20 Hours where a pure joy but I must say that the ''journey is the joy''. Lack of gameplay-variation and missing connection to your city pulls this game and the gorgeous experience a little bit down.
After all I would recommend this game to every fan of city-builders as a gem. For every other people this one will be a bit to hard and unspectacular.
LENGTH : Played 20 Hours but it's kind of endless
BUGS : No
PRICE : Paid 8.99€
DIFFICULTY : Hard-Very Hard
FINAL:
81 / 100

Not Banned From Memory
70/100
If you like city builders/colony management games and have the habit of checking reviews before (or even after) buying a game, I bet you already came across the comment “it’s like Banished, but…”.
Banished set the tone for this kind of games and still stands on its own two feet today.

Although the game is old, the modding community grew in large for more content, keeping the game alive on the aspects that we all love on this game.
Even though I don't play anymore and usually I choose other newer games on different mechanics, I have to leave a thumbs up as a mark on how important this game is for this genre.

Being able to pause and fast forward through time is a fun touch. You can let them enjoy their lives slowly. Or run the sim at 10x speed and see what falls apart. Or goes well.
It is quite important to note that any mods will disable achievements. But there are some very interesting mods to play around with.
If I'm being completely honest, I had this going while working on various side projects as it didn't require my full attention. Just let the sim run, see what happens, add some things, destroy some things, move some. And sometimes reload a save because WHERE DID THE COWS GO. But that only happened once. And I still don't know what happened to the cows they all just disappeared or fell through the earth, or the black hole took them. I wasn't able to replicate it even in the reloaded save.
Overall, I enjoyed the game and would recommend it to anyone who wants something chill (or it could be stressful depending on your play style and how hard you make it!) to play!
Have a great day!

Map Seeds:
Map generation changed a little in past 2 years so most old seeds generate something else.
Because of this I am going to leave 2 map seeds that should make it possible to get all achievements in 2017:
Mountain Men: Mountains, Small - 685285880 (1.0.6)
Everything else: Valleys, Large - 19569742 (1.0.7)
I put almost 50 hours into this small game, that's quite good deal however about 20 of these hours went into heavily modified version of banished known as Colonial Charter.
Vanilla Banished
I am not going to write elaborate review as the game is over 3 year old and there's already 20k of them.
Banished as stand alone game is really nice looking time sink with relaxing music for maybe about 20 - 50 hours more if you are trying to get all all achievements. Game start roughly and if you don't know how to play it's quite possible you will lose everything really fast. This also scares few of my friends from playing but the moment you learn game everything becomes really easy and only challenge are RNG disasters that can be turned off such as tornados, disease, fire or orchard infestation.
There's many guides and banished wikia contains calculator for optimal field, orchard, graveyard or pasture size turning the game into relaxing simulation instead of challenge.
*You can only earn achievements in unmoded version.
Modded Banished
This is where I put most of my hours.
Currently the best mods you can get is Colonial Charter + Megamod. Don't look in the workshop instead, google their site for instruction and direct download. I heard The North is really nice mod but I didn't had time to check it out.
I admit I feel like even with Adam & Eve - which is supposedly hardest start, starting just with 2 people, buildings in CC makes everything easier than original. Some might think of it as negative but honestly I think it just turn banished into sim city builder with many production chains and nicer visuals thanks to the variety and decoration CC brings.
CC + Megamod adds many new maps, buildings, decorations, animals, plans and so on that it expand the game many times over. The decorations and customized sets such as docks make it worth alone.
If you are looking for more simulation and less survival I would recommend starting with already modded game.
My largest problem with the game
Performance - Game starts to hang out at +10 speed when your population start to hit certain number of people.
In my case it's around 800 to 1200, then I slow game to +5 or +2. However in these large half map covering cities that speed is almost impossible to work on as everything takes ages to finish on lower speed when you are trying to maitain and grow city with population so big.
In the end, I do recommended the game modded or not. Both offer quite different experience.
One for a few hours of challenge in I think graphically pleasing builder and other for many hours of simulation.

You need to make everything perfect to grow. It's not a game where you design everything and works well. you have got to know what you must build next, when are you gonna build it and where you put it. If you make a mistake, your citizens start dying.

Resource scarcity basically forces trading (which is normally good) but there aren't a great deal of ways you can make money trading, and the best seems to be growing/chopping wood. Also you need to build a lot of trading posts just to get any regular visitors (even if they're right next to each other)

Where this game shines is in its Workshop support and mod community. 'Colonial Charter' makes this game what it should be. Dozens of production chains from anything to bread, bricks, glass, bedding, cloth, silk, coke, charcoal, tableware, you name it. I spent a good 70 hours basically rebuilding colonial Boston, complete with colonial harbour, city walls, governor's mansion. Get the game, play it for a few hours, then get Colonial Charter and get really going.

It's one of the best 'colony' builders and is the exact game I've always wanted to play. Unfortunately whilst mods extend its longevity, the lack of any real clear goal does mean it gets tiring and boring to an extent in the late-game. I do find myself coming back to it every few years though, I hope there's a sequel or spiritual successor.

Pros/Cons
+ It's brilliantly balanced resource gathering and usage mechanism is the pride of this game.
+ Disasters and illnesses add a nice threat factor to an otherwise 'peaceful' game.
+ Good building variety and randomised map seeds builds a nice diverse gaming experience.
+ Workshop support allows for easy mod use which there are plenty of choice from.
- Inclusion of danger from wildlife (wolves, bears etc.) would is the one missing element.
- A somewhat lack of terrain/map options is a limiting factor to replayability.

--------------(finer details)--------------
I play similar games that offer the same experience, but do a better job when it comes to building and sim management. Rimworld comes to mind. Banished isn't perfect, and its rather crude and feature poor. For instance, it hasn't got any tools to plan out development and growth that other sim games like Prison Architect or Rimworld. There's also no way to control or manage resource, so turning berries or wheat into booze is if your brewer can grab some before it gets eaten.
There's also the fact buildings are different sizes which will make your OCD go crazy if you want to build with no wasted space.
But Banished has some sort of magic behind it that I can't quite explain. Somehow it is addicting to me even though there really isn't any threat other than surviving nature and dealing with Banished's weird quirks and personality.
Seriously. Whether it be a bug or a feature, one of the challenges in Banished is starvation. This will drive you nuts as a new player. And I can tell you, you will see the symbol for no food appear over homes. Eventually you will see the same symbol appear over people's heads. God help that virtual person because you, the player, will watch their activity in vain as they go looking for food. Visiting places that have food. Sometimes with enough to restock their home! They might even be carrying food in their own G-d d-med hands. Only to drop dead from f-ing starvation because they're too G-d d-med stupid to eat.
I don't know how many times I've restarted games because 1 person died from starvation a few years in. Food is really finicky in this game. You may think having farms is enough, but no. Early on, you need hunters, fishers, and gatherers to tide hunger through the months outside the growing season.
That's probably one of the reasons I like this game. When dealing with the factors that make your town fail and its people die, there's a feeling of accomplishment when you can over come that and succeed. And its really weird to say that since Banished is a very simple game with a strange complexity and limitations that makes it difficult.
Anyway...
I actually do not recommend buying Banished at full price although you likely won't be disappointed if you do. Reason why I say this is Banished does indeed have some bugs and a rare stability issue that needs to be ironed out. Unfortunately, it appears this is the final build of the game since Banished has not been updated in years. The developer is like 1 person and has since moved on to another project. On the other hand, Banished has a very active modding community offering lots of additional free content that substantially adds to (but doesn't necessarily improve) the game.
This game gets slashed 75% off for every sale. And for what it is, Banished is a bargain at $5.

Say starvation kills 50% your population. Even if every single survivor is working on food production, you'll rarely recover from this. Strange, as having less mouths to feed should result in the survivors having enough
to survive and bounce back, at some point. For some reason, adults feed their elderly parents instead of their children when starving, so the kids die while the old thrive. Eventually, you end up with nothing but old people, as adults die from starvation too, despite being healthier than elderly fragile people. Then, old people die of old age. Game over.
Now, if you have a couple with two kids and the adult male dies, the adult woman will not remarry or move in with another available adult male, even if she's just 15. No, she's going to be a widow for the rest of her life. Same goes for males when they lose their spouses. So no more kids in a family if one of the parents die.
You produce X food units, but the game doesn't tell you how much one individual needs over a period of Y time. Same for firewood, herbs, tools, etc. There a wiki, but it's barren--and sometimes contradictory--in terms of information at this stage. A GOOD developer would've included some information about such crucial elements, and would've added them IN-GAME. A BAD developer lets the users work in his/her place by making a wiki. Now, regarding food and goods, you can see how much is produced and used in real time IF you build a town hall, which is almost out of reach in terms of ressources early in the game, and that gives only a vague idea of how much goods your whole town needs or consumes. You still cannot evaluate how much of X you should have in stock in order to keep your town going.
There's a lot more that needs fixing, like the priority function, which often doesn't work properly, or a hunter moving ALONE into a house you built next to a fish dock 200 tiles from the only hunter's cabin on the map, despite the fact that 8 fishermen were ready to move AS COUPLES into a new house and that there's an empty house right next to the hunter's cabin. I could go on and on...
So, if you're looking for a frustrating game that's filled with illogical stuff and broken mechanics, look no further: Banished is for you. About 80% of your villages/towns will crash and burn before you reach a population of 100, for reasons that will leave you scratching your head--and that's after playing the entire game in normal speed while constantly monitoring and managing resources.
If you're looking for a fun, casual town building game, look elsewhere.
On the plus side, the graphics are nice. Future updates could make me change my mind, but it will take a big update or multiple small ones make the game interesting at last. Too bad, because I really wanted to like this game, but I don't want to spend my entire game time looking at the slightest variation in food or tools stocks as if that was investments on the New York Stock Exchange.

General:
Rating: E?
Price: $19.99
Genre: City Builder/Management Sim
Time played: 53.2 Hours
A game that’s deceptively simple. A banished group moves to a new area to start a community. Depending on the difficulty, you start off with various things and a certain number of people. You just keep building until you can’t anymore.
Gameplay - 7
You start off in the wilderness, a few families and some food/supplies. Depending on your starting difficulty you might have some seeds to grow crops or some animals to put out to pasture. Regardless you only have a short time to get things started before your people start dying of starvation.
Banished is a resource management game and you have a ton to manage, your people, food, stone, iron, logs, firewood; the list goes on and on. At first you’ll struggle to play the game, you’ll lose some of your people, due to starvation or other things. The elements are not your friend. You don’t have to worry about being attacked but you do have to worry about food, clothing and shelter, and in the fall/winter you have to worry about keeping warm. The game isn’t easy by any means, but it is rewarding to get to a higher population and have your people thriving.
There’s a delicate balance, you want to make sure your people have everything they need, you want them to have extra food and so on, but now you’ve waited too long to expand and now they are all old and dying, there’s no children to continue the town of _____. And it fades into nothing, becoming a ghost town.
Or you expand too quickly, now there’s not enough food, or firewood for everyone. People get greedy and start hoarding to protect their family. Now you have people dying off due to starvation and freezing cold. Your food stockpile is at 0 and winter is just starting. More and more die off due to no food and now you have empty houses, and not enough people to do the jobs that need doing. No one is bringing in food and another ghost town.
Or you’re doing fine and expanding at a decent pace, your people are numerous and prosperous. Nomads arrive at your town hall and you agree to let them move into your city, bumping up the number of adults who can work which helps your city. Huzzah things are looking good. Oh no, those nomads had smallpox. Now they are spreading it throughout your city. That hospital you were going to build ‘eventually’ now looms in the darkness as one by one your people are killed off and there’s nothing you can do but watch.
Story - ??
The … story as it were is that you were banished and now you’re starting your own community/village away from the others. Religious persecution? Skn the wrong color? Hair color wrong? Eye? Who knows they don’t explain why you were banished, and honestly you have too much stuff to do to worry about silly things like that. Winter is coming.
Graphics - 7
Graphics aren’t the best and once you get enough people things start to tax your PC. The graphics are decent and they get the job done. They help convey the needed information.
Controls - 10(mouse/keyboard)
The mouse and keyboard is the way to go on this, I think using a controller would cause you more pain than it’s worth. I’m also too lazy to map my steam controller for this.
All in all the mouse keyboard combo was easy enough, once you know what you’re doing that is.
Repeatability - 10
You’re going to fail. A lot. The AI sometimes does stupid things, technically you told them to walk over and harvest that log, but you didn’t tell them to build a bridge to cross that river, so now they will walk all the way around the map to get to the thing YOU told them to do. I had people starve to death trying to get to some stone I had asked them to gather. Watching my population slowly die of starvation even though I had over 20k food is frustrating to say the least. Make sure you save pretty often.
This game is unforgiving, if you mess up one tiny detail it can throw your whole game off and send it into a downward spiral of death. And boom Ghost town.
Music - 10
Subtle and enchanting, it’s soothing in the background and easy to listen to
Multiplayer - NA
No multiplayer which is probably a good thing.
Initial Thoughts:
I played this game years ago when it first came out (2014) a friend got me to play it and I enjoyed it a great deal. However something else came out, my computer crashed? Something happened and I had to uninstall it and it got lost in the vast depths of my Steam library.
Recently another friend was playing the game and we compared notes and that lead me back into the world of Banished.
Soma Says:
So many ways to accidentally kill your people. Everything matters, your resources you have to watch carefully the slightest thing can upset the very very delicate balance going on in this game. Don’t get me wrong it is a difficult game, but that’s only because you’ve never played it before and lots of things are new and different.
I think between the last time i played this game back in 2014 I had come across Dwarf Fortress and spent years playing that. Maybe it was before this game I’m not sure. But this game reminds me of a much easier (though graphically pleasing) version of Dwarf Fortress. No Z levels or anything but still way more complex than it looks on the surface.
The game does a wonderful job of showing how everything is balanced on a razor’s edge. Love it love everything about it. You should play and be ready to fail, over and over again. Just when you think you have it you have to build a new building that changes things again.
Really well done can’t recommend enough.
Of course if that’s your type of game… not for everyone.

Let me start off by saying nothing about the game is necessarily bad. If you just want a cheap game that you can just play every once in a while when you get the itch for a city builder, then this might be for you. However, as a lifelong fan of the city builders, I find this game way too simple. You unlock almost everything in the game fairly early on, and after a couple hours it feels like you're just expanding for the sake of expanding, without any real goal or sense of progression. While the game can be difficult in terms of resource balancing, I find it tedious rather than a fulfilling challenge. Ultimately, while the everything in the game feels cohesive, it just doesn't add anything new to the genre, and struggles to maintain longterm goals. If you want a complex Paradox-like experience, this will not satisfy you.
HOWEVER...it is worth noting that Banished was made by one person. As a fellow game dev, I respect that tremendously, and I feel like you should buy this game if only to support a passionate creator.

My issues are with the AI. First and foremost the villagers would rather have the entire village die than disturb the concept of the nuclear family. Couples will not have children in a house occupied by one of their parents and their parents won't move out without Thanos snapping the house out of existence. If you don't build or rebuild houses by the time the couples are no longer able to have children, your population crashes and your village enters a death spiral. It's a constant problem, and having to micromanage the strange death cult you're responsible for is genuinely unbelievable in an otherwise very grounded experience.
The AI pathing and prioritization is, despite being better than originally, still an issue. This can be related to the former issue as at times townspeople will move or be moved into houses far away from their jobs and be walking very far to do anything, or maybe they just wild out and do it without much reason. Other games and older games of the genre solved some of this with obfuscating and/or simplying the mechanics behind this stuff and maybe that really should've been the play here. You can have people spending their day just walking to and back from the place they want to work without actually doing much. You can force everyone to pick jobs near them but that doesn't mean the townsfolk ideal for the job are there to do it, just that the nearest townsfolk are.
Both of these issues can and should be alleviated with mods or simply cheating, in my opinion that's fine. The workshop for this game's great, too. Use it. If you can overlook or mitigate the very deep flaws this game has, it's very enjoyable, but I can't recommend it unpatched.

This is a lovely, little game. I purchased this the day it was offered. It's a great 'go back to' game. You never quite finish building and it's a game that requires a delicate balance of things. Failure to manage and keep your community alive and thriving without adequate food/shelter/clothing and heat is not an easy task. But that's the nuts and bolts of it. There are no other groups to wage war against. No wild animals to beware of. Nothing but survival and expansion. Your only other contact with the outside world is a trader who will...well...trade. No currency is involved. Sell overstock of your resources for something from the trader he has but you don't.
So this game has no war, no animal threats, no other people to deal with (except the trader) and no bothersome currency. Quid Pro Quo. Just to survive season after season with nothing more to do than improve and expand your existence. Good luck. It takes some work but when it starts going well you'll be very satisfied with yourself.
That is until food starts to be consumed faster than you can produce it or no firewood or coats. Little nuisances like that.
Have fun and good luck.

As for game play: There are only about a dozen structures and you can't unlock more as you get larger. It took me a couple of tries to get the hang of it (mainly because I'm neurotic about perfect placement and clean, linear streets) but once you do, from a clean start it takes about a half hour to build a self-sustaining city. Then you spend hours building the same things over and over again until you fill up the map, or whatever challenge you set for yourself. Concepts like citizen happiness or morale are barely executed (I can't tell if it matters), and anyway, the only forms of entertainment are, sadly, going to church or visiting the cemetery. Yippee! You don't have to worry about aesthetics either, as your drone people are happy to live anywhere, like next to a supply depot in front of an iron mine. It feels like you're managing a cult. There are only 4 resources, iron, coal, stone, and wood and three types of animals, but many types of crops and orchards. There is wheat, but no mills or bakeries. There is a brew-pub, but no wine. There is no concept of dairy. Whole city problems that would require a higher level of design are completely left out, like crime and sanitation.
It feels like an amped up student project, to be honest. The core game could be coded by just about anybody with a decent programming and math background. It just has nicely polished (but pretty simple) graphics, animation, and sound layered on top. That's a $5 game, not a $20 one.

The game focuses on the smaller village to town setting. Preferring to engage the player with its economy system. I would describe it as similar but more lightweight than Blue Byte’s The Settlers. Villagers are tasked with gathering resources like ore or wood, other villagers process it into usable materials and yet others refine it. Balancing the supply and demand of materials and resources can be tricky but feels rewarding when done right. In some ways It fells like you are THE invisible hand. The point here being… without going too into the meta of what the point of life is, to make everyone happy, allowing a healthy expansion of the town and being self-sufficient in the process.
The [strike]settlers[/strike], villagers have needs that need to be met or else they leave your paradise on earth. Makes me wonder, where are they going to go? Weren’t they banished from everywhere else? They get hungry, so farms or fishers need to be placed. They get sick so a hospital is needed. They even have the audacity to get cold during the winter. Every job needs a villager assigned to it. This adds more difficult to expanding the town and opening the gameplay up a bit more. The goal here is preventing hunger, disease, cold, pest infestations...
Though it can be difficult at first, the foremost important thing I found was expanding very slowly. Knowing exactly how many people your town can sustain is key.
Helped by a simple interface, the game does a good job at explaining what everything is and how it works. There is no monetary economy and very little trading is done. No combat is present, no diplomacy or politics. Only the people and the land. I think this is what makes Banished great. It is a simple game with enough depth to keep players engaged, has an easy barrier to entry and hooks right away with is steep difficulty that can be mastered swiftly once one uses their head.
The downside is the end game. Once you’ve built everything and have balanced the economy, there is little left to do other than achievement hunting. I’m not going to say it is shallow, but the end game does feel like a swimming pool you’ve outgrown. If you find it particularly fun and don’t mind starting over, the challenge is there to start with fewer resources or on different sized maps. I had fun with my time with Banished. I think the asking price is fair but considering the age and alternatives out there today, I’d buy it on a sale if you enjoy city builders / economy sims.
Mods are supported but active development has ceased.

Each individual citizen simulated is a nice change from Anno type games. Biggest downside is that the scenery has very dull colors, they could do with a bit of vibrance, but it's okay, the game is still worth it.

Good game, fun sandbox with enough depth, especially once you add mods. Late game with a large city on anything with less than a petaFLOP of computing power is laggy.
----
I've been playing this game on-and-off since its release and accrued a decent enough amount of hours in it to make a proper-ish review. I'll start off with this:
Zitat:
Once you find out that you have to immediately pause the game upon start, put down your initial supply chain and then start the game for real, you'll not starve after the first winter.
Finding that out took me emberassingly long enough. And honestly, that takes a bit of the initial charm away. However, if, and when, you get the start of the game down, you're left with a pretty amusing sandbox game.
It's not deep, mind you. You have your basic game systems that you need to take care of: making sure everyone's healthy, fed, clothed, and has access to the right tools.
Getting this balance right is the initial challenge of the game. Once you've got the basics down and act accordingly -- like pausing the game on start and immediately putting down the absolute basics to survive -- it's all a matter of scaling and preparing for the next big thing, be it a disaster, or a lot of people randomly dying during the prime of their life, leaving you without enough people to man your supply chain.
After a while you'll notice some fun things. Build a new house and a new family will immediately start to live there, with some hilarious age differences from time to time, or the hilarious first name concatenations. And, of course, the way people can end up dying.
Once you've done the rounds of the base game, you'll end up with a good couple dozen hours in. For me, that's when I discovered mods for this game were a much bigger thing than I thought. Colonial Charter is great, and combined with the Mega Mod makes for a fantastic way to spend way too many hours creating the best looking neighborhoods possible.
But then comes the wall that is late game. You have your speed settings:
Speed | ... | Impact |
---|---|---|
1x | WHY | Negligable |
2x | Better | Visible |
5x | Aight | Heavy |
10x | Vroooom | Frames Per Minute |
Which help a lot to, well, speed up the game when you're just looking at the snow falling. But once you have a lot of sithizens that run around, doing their AI stuff, reticulating all their splines, you'll know how deep in the budget bin your processor was found. This game is heavily reliant on processing power for the actions of each sithizen, so you'll want to stay below 100-200 depending on your clock speeds.
In the end, it's a sandbox game. So you make your own fun. Once you've got the mechanics down, it's all about the way you dress up your town. Add mods to make that way more satisfying. Play this game to relax and enjoy yourself. As Yatzhee from Zero Punctuation would describe this, it's a podcast game.

Town died.
Played again, town died again.
Played again, town flourishes!
Overpopulation causes everyone to starve, cause too little food made in time.
Would recommend.
