Baldurs Gate is my all time favorite RPG game of all, i was so happy when i knew a expansion was coming, i have read a lot of reviews saying that the game is very linear, that the story falls short and it is not like the main game.

and yes the Story is not that long or engrossing like the main game but hey! it is a expansion! not a standalone game, and given the fact that after so many years we still have the chance to get new content for this great old game, i am really grateful for that.

I only can say that i enjoyed it, and i loved the connection this game does between Baldurs gate 1 and 2.

so if you are a fan of Baldurs Gate , please get it and complete the saga already!

A lot of the stuff that make the base game so good is gone here. There are a few moments where the expansion shine, but for the most part I was just annoyed with how much it is streamlined and force feeds you sequences that are anticlimatic.
Worth it if you get it on discount to play it once

The writing in this expansion makes me a bit wary of the BGIII that I haven't bought or played yet. It really stands out from the original BG1 and in a negative way... it just doesn't feel like the game I grew up with. I'm conflicted, I feel I'd do myself a favour by not playing it at all and just moving onto BGII. It just doesn't sit right with me, like I was reading a fan fiction and not a proper continuation of the story... I really really hope it improved in BGIII.

Pretty good. It adds 5 chapters to the story, although 13 is more of a little epilogue. But decent story, fun quests, brings the XP cap to 500k (about 2 more levels). Pick it up on sale.

Dragonspear's story is unsatisfying at best and nonsensical at worst, leaning on contrived plot events, dialogue that's more like Borderlands than BioWare, and an ending that falls apart under the slightest bit of scrutiny. The gameplay does better with good dungeons and big fights to be had, but is marred by unpatched bugs, too many fetch quests and world design that repeats Throne of Bhaal's linearity. You'll also enter BG2 overlevelled if importing a character through the games. Dragonspear isn't as bad as some would say, especially if you don't care about the story, but I can't recommend this expansion when it asks the same price as the base game for a lesser experience.

Much like the fanfic tier companion characters added in the Enhanced Edition, the writing of the characters, dialogue and overall scenario in Dragonspear is absolutely embarrassing. If you're a fan of the originals then don't bother with this one, you'll likely just become incredibly frustrated.

I've run through Baldur's Gate I and II several times since they were launched. I've probably put about 1000 hours into the two of them in total.

I was delighted to see some new content for them and was disappointed to see a lot of drama when this was first launched. I decided to let the dust settle for a while before trying this. I tried this after a complete run through of BG1 with the intention of just carrying on to BG II. To be honest, I have been very disappointed.

This DLC isn't bad, it just is a long way off the standard of either BG I or II. If this was a standalone adventure, I'd probably rate it higher. As something to play as part of Baldur's Gate it just doesn't hit the mark. The story isn't very good but that isn't the issue. The real issue is that the story just doesn't fit into BG. The tone is wrong, some of the plot doesn't make any sense whatsoever.

The combat isn't bad but it isn't good either. There isn't a single memorable encounter in the DLC.

To be honest every second I spent playing this would have been better spent going straight to BG II

Review of: Baldur's Gate: Siege of Dragonspear

Well, it’s been almost two decades since the last release of, let’s say, official content related to Baldur’s Gate series. But, here we are, with a pretty solid expansion developed and released by Beamdog in 2016. Just a small reminder - the original Baldur’s Gate is from 1998, so the gap is quite significant.

Anyway, I was a bit sceptical about the new DLC, mostly because of how the developers designed those new playable characters in the Enhanced Edition of the base game, however, to my surprise, Siege of Dragonspear turned out to be legitimately decent.

Storywise, the expansion introduces a completely new - but short - campaign, which tells us what happened between the events of Baldur’s Gate and Baldur’s Gate II. Well, it’s a really good story with new interesting NPCs, numerous side quests as well as additional unique items. The only drawback is that the recruitable characters introduced in the DLC won’t appear in the sequel, however, if you had some of the new items in the inventory while importing your protagonist to the sequel, they’ll be accessible, although scattered around the whole in-game world.

The gameplay hasn’t really changed; there are new well-designed, good looking locations, however, the progression is more linear here and you can’t backtrack to all previously visited places after moving on to another chapter. Furthermore, this time all choices have consequences, which is especially advantageous for roleplaying. Besides, the expansion introduces a new class, namely the Shaman, which is rather mediocre if you ask me. Also, it’s worth mentioning that the level cap has been increased up to 500 000 XP.

Well, after all, Siege of Dragonspear is a pleasant surprise and I don’t understand all the criticism the expansion has received. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and this DLC isn’t perfect, but still, it’s at least decent, if not really good. Besides, releasing totally new content related to a classic cRPG after eighteen years is a bold move and Beamdog should be congratulated instead of being put down. They took into account many details and connected Baldur’s Gate with Baldur’s Gate II in a very consistent as well as satisfying way. There’s a lot of Easter Eggs along with little nods towards other Infinity Engine games set in Forgotten Realms, also the new companions are well-written and have their own little stories and depth. The developers even somehow managed to bring back some of the original voice actors and the new soundtrack composed by Sam Hulick is just awesome.

So, I’ll just say that Siege of Dragonspear is definitely worthy of my recommendation, although the price leaves a lot to be desired, because the expansion costs as much as the base game, however, Baldur’s Gate is certainly more expanded as well as it takes much more time to complete. That’s why I’d suggest getting the DLC during a sale or as a part of the Infinity Collection bundle.

If you love Baldur's Gate series and want more of it make sure you don't play this expansion, it's unbearable and might make you retire from your series playthrough, just start BG2 and skip this.

I really enjoyed this expansion.

Although it is much more linear than BG1 or 2, it's not the straightforward dungeon crawl some people make it out to me.

In the story you are following an army as they advance across the Sword Coast on their campaign. Thus, once you proceed with the army to a new area, you cannoy backtrack. But in each area there are a ton of side quests to do. Some of them are really great.

The game features many higher level enemies than BG1, and in many ways feels like a warmup for BG2, in regards to to the enemies you face and environments you'll encounter. In one chapter there is even a huge underground sections that reminds of the Underdark from BG2.

The game is beautiful. There are many incredible and colorful settings. The game also has some really fun large scale battles, which were a lot of fun.

I liked the story. Is it necessary for BG2? Obviously not, we'd been playing BG2 for more than 15 years before this released. But it's fun, and it does take you right into BG2.

The companions are very good. They have side quests and a lot more lines than the original Baldur's Gate. Also, they did an excellent job with the cannon party members, in terms of voice acting and scripting.

Also worthy of note, the experience cap in SoD is 500k xp, perfect for dual classing. You can now start BG2 with your fully dualed fighter mage!

Overall I think it's worth experiencing, at least once if not on each playthrough of the trilogy. People will say that it's not necessary, and again, of course it's not BG2 has been just fine without it since it's release. But Tales of the Sword coast was equally unnecessary in terms of BG2 - this game at least feels like a continuation of Charname's story rather than a total side quest.

Recommended.

For someone who is very new to the franchise, the DLC was an almost seamless transition in terms of presentation and spirit, albeit a little simplified and a lot more narrow in scale. Nonetheless, it's a compelling story that took me 40 to 50 hrs to run through and finally nudged me towards the BG 2 that I have never touched on before today.

Gameplay: 6/10

Graphics & Sound: 6/10

Narration: 7/10

The general quality of this DLC is very similar to the base Baldur's Gate 1 - so if you enjoyed it I would definitely recommend getting it. In my opinion there are two main differences between the base game and the DLC:
- Siege of Dragonspear is more linear than Baldur's Gate 1 - in the base game you get to explore many more areas than what you cross in Siege of Dragonspear, and in any order you wish. Personally I don't see it as a bad thing, since having less exploration freedom also allows the narration to match player travels well, and you also meet a lot less of trivial random battles.
- In my opinion Siege of Dragonspear has a more compelling narration, with interesting companion additions, more companion interactions with the existing ones than what you see in Baldur's Gate 1, and a less typical plotline.

This was a pretty good expansion, 7/10. The original voice actors return (Including the main bad guy from BG2, I think he is even a voice option for new characters or it least it really sounds like him), Minsc gets more funny dialog and the visual enhancements are better than BG2 in many areas. Flowing lava and river streams with fog effects that were a nice showcase on what Beemdog COULD have done with BG 3 before the people behind Divinity: OS got it instead (Not that I'm complaining). If you take your time the expansion is 20 hours or so, maybe more if you REALLY want to know what your low lvl characters can do against a green dragon in really close quarters. Like being locked in a room with a grizzly bear that shoots acid from it's mouth.

Aside from some hard optional stuff you can get some really great loot. You can't take anything into BG 2 BUT you can export and re import that character to help new characters starting from Candle Keep, with everything they got in the expansion. A great way to cut the slog in half if you're itching to get another character into Baldur's Gate 2. Plus the level cap from the core game is gone so now your character going into BG 2 will be stronger than normal. My Druid shifter made it to level 12 with 350,000 exp to go until lvl 13. Which is where the Shifter really starts to shine.

My gripes have to do with some of the writing. There are instances that no matter what your character you get dialog options with weirdly puritanical statements that seem somewhat out of place, like a Buzzfeed editor appeared over their shoulder and demanded they change this or that. It's just my opinion. Another minor gripe is that when the expansion starts, you have everyone that was in your party when you killed Serevok (even if they died, exception being that ridiculous wild mage that turned herself into stone seconds before dropping Serevok), any other dead ones are very much alive. Check the floor for loot before continuing the prologue. When you complete the prologue they go away forever. So MAKE SURE YOU UN EQUIP THEM AT THE LAST MOMENT. There are minor glitches every so often that will make you want to reload. So QUICK SAVE OFTEN.

I found that the story was really cool and from what I understand ties into even Icewind Dale Lore. They did a good job on showing how your band of adventurers ended up how they did in the Beginning of BG 2 and has enough options to give you at least 2 or 3 unique experiences playing through it.

If you are in love with the Baldur's Gate series as much as I am (my favorite game series of ALL TIME), then you are definately going to want to play this DLC: Siege of Dragonspear.

So far, I have had a lot of fun with this campaign.

If you are an old fart like I am, or a fan of George Harrison & the Beatles, make sure to have Neera in your party when the sun rises (very funny Easter Egg here)

Unlike the original Baldur's Gate series, Siege of Dragonspear offers little to no value to the main storyline. It does not contain the same level of replayability that the original game has. There's one twist towards the end and that's it. Some of the characters are alright but the strategy employed for fighting enemies is basically throw more at the player. The final fight in the game you literally fight a wave of 50-100 enemies which is laughably stupid. The Ashatiel fight is broken. There's so much wrong with this lore-wise, storyline wise, gameplay wise that it's almost impossible to give it a good review.

I'd highly recommend never buying this for full price. Maybe get it in a bundle as you might be amused in one playthrough but after that you'll no longer find this fun or interesting like the original playthrough experience. It's far too linear.

I have to say that I was quite sceptical before acquiring the game due to the rather low score and the controversies surrounding it. Thus, I hesitated long before buying it and only acquired it recently at an 80% discount.

Currently, I am halfway through the game (3 of 6 chapters done) and I am positively surprised: The game has good (side)quests, varied landscapes, dungeons and monsters as well as interesting loot. In addition, the companions are much more lively than in BG I and have interesting, sometimes funny discussions; Glint is too hyperactive for my taste, thus I tossed him out and took Jaheira as tank / healer.

Summary: The criticism this games receives is not justified in my opinion and the game is a worthy expansion for the BG series. Hence, I am writing the first review in my life. And now to the surprise of some readers: I am male, 40+ and conservative and not at all fond of SJWs.

This is tonally very different than the first BG1, but I found it to a be a fun little experiment in what a newer Baldur's gate would have looked like. Instead of free-roaming and being allowed to throw yourself into certain death against higher leveled enemies, you instead are given a limited number of areas with many different ways on how to approach them. This does lean more into what later Bioware games would end up doing, instead of focusing on the magic that made that first game so special. The gain though is the twenty hours of tightly crafted progression that you can dive into chapter by chapter. At the end of the day, it allowed me to bring in my end-game BG1 character and have some more fun in this world, so I loved it. It has flaws, just as the original did, but I didn't find anything truly game-breaking. There is a reveal later on that you know about, but for some reason the game will just not let you say it, despite overhearing it multiple times. That is pretty true though of most of these tabletop games adapted into computer games, as they just can't account for the wide range of role-playing you might be doing.

Hey also, listen to Mages and Murderdad's while you play! I found there commentary and insights to be really good as a first time player of this series.

So you go to a temple of Bhaal, who's been overrun by Cyric followers. Cool! But you get to the entrance and it's guarded by a mature Green Dragon. That's also feral somehow. And you kill him and then there's some caves with Bugbears with no way out other than the Dragon or the Temple. Then there's the temple, where you have a half-dragon Blackguard and find out it's infiltrated by a band of Illithids. What?!

Oh, and all this after you've beaten a lich using some magic stones of dispelling that some random dwarf gives you.

This is truly awful, even by fanfic standards.

Great game! The controversy over one NPC is such a facepalm. I played and didn't even notice. Much ado about nothing.

It is so cool that they got most of the voice actors back. The dialog is great, the dungeons are interesting, the story is cool. Little side quests are well done. I really like the Goblin Shaman companion. Well done.

More than anything, I think it fit smoothly and appropriately as a bridge between the games. It feels like it was there the whole time and just fits. That is quite the feat.

My only complaint, really, is that they don't really explain early on what the Crusade is all about and why anyone would join it. Their rhetoric is painfully vague. I spent way too long scratching my head about why there was a conflict at all and that shows through in the dialog. It pays off at the end but until then the whole thing seems forced and not properly justified. They should have spent more time showing the actual bad things that the Crusade had done and letting NPCs really dive into their reasons for joining. Oh well, the game is a lot of fun and I like games where the enemy isn't just two-dimensionally evil.

Buggy, Weird writing (preachy, kind-of-lame dialog) Major Slowdowns, The non-linear style of the original is gone and you are railroaded from start to finish. I'm really sad I spend money on this. There is a particularly large battle near the end of the game which is laggy and buggy and didn't award achievements unless you did everything in a backwards way.

There are a few interesting choices you can make, none of them seem really impactful in the long run. Some of the areas were visually pretty. Some quest lines were really filled out, and others were bare bones. Some of the battles it's really easy for important NPCs to get snuffed as they charge recklessly into the heart of the enemy forces.

My biggest complaint is the hokey way they railroad you throughout the campaign. (how you 'lose access' to your money is particularly hokey, I think it's supposed to be funny, spoiler, it's just really annoying {and preachy} )

A fantastic addition to the Baldur's Gate story

The angry reviews about this DLC are ridiculous. There is one minor character and the end of the dlc who mentions they were born a man then became a girl later. Literally one line of missable text at the end of the game. Nothing is being forced down your throat and also who tf even cares. Get over yourself and your hatred

This was an enjoyable story line even if it was a little bit railroady. Thank you Beamdog for adding more content to a 20 year old game

I've read the various criticisms about this game, ranging from 'flame wars' about the presence of a transsexual, to the graphics etc. Players are entitled to their opinions; here is mine: the criticisms are largely unfounded.

Pros:
Siege of Dragonspear is a plot filler DLC; it plugs the gap between BG1 and BG2, and i think it does the job very well. The main story takes a bit of time to get going but once it does then it moves along at a good pace, reflecting siege conditions in a reasonable way. The story is engaging, and the main protagonist Caelar Argent, helps develop an interesting plot line that in turn fleshes out your player character who is a Bhaal Spawn and the associated history, whilst developing your 'relationship' with Jon Irenicus.

In terms of the pacing of the quests, I thoroughly enjoyed most of the main and side quests, and the final battle was a great challenge. There is a scaling in the battles that I thought makes for a nice variety and change of pace over the original games. There are also some great new items including +3 ammunition that are spread out over the campaign that are very limited in number, so that you have to choose whether to use them when you find them or save them for the big fight at the end. I played the game on Core Rules setting and I think the Devs got the balancing just about right.

Cons:
The new graphics are a bit 'cartoony', but thankfully you can switch them off and use 'classic' graphics. Some of the new characters you can have in your party are really good, but you won't see them in BG2, which I think is a real shame. The way that the area maps are done means that you can't explore sometimes fairly large portions of a given map, which is a shame and can sometimes create a very linear impression of gameplay at certain stages of the game.

Overall:
I played BG1 and SoD with the same character with the aim of taking that character through to BG2 and I think that Beamdog have done a great job of joining together the tails of the stories, and I'm really looking forward to playing my character in BG2. I met and talked to the cleric who caused such a storm on the forums, and this is my opinion: I really don't know what the fuss is about. So the writer wanted to bring in a very different type of character - I think that role playing should allow such freedom. The whole issue unfairly detracted from what is a solid piece of DLC and a labour of love that has added something different to the Baldur's Gate series. In my opinion Beamdog should be congratulated on a solid game and keeping this much loved franchise alive and kicking.

I only recommend this if you absolutely want to keep playing with your character from the original baldurs gate. I personally love baldurs gate, I've played through it on an off since its release. I first played it on windows 95. I bought the enhanced edition and loved it. This DLC however I am not a fan of. It has quality, I wont knock the creators and I think they did a good job making something. I think some people will like Dragonspear. I just don't really like it. So I can't recommend it. It felt kind of preachy on certain topics like refugees and things, whether i agree or disagree with these topics is not relevant because I play Baldurs gate to get my mind off of these topics. Every enemy has something to say, I can't even kill a vampire without hearing the vampires side of the story. It just feels tiring. If you dont mind these things, you should get the DLC.

Siege of Dragonspear is a fun, and above all interesting piece of DLC. It bridges the two games pretty nicely, and the more tight, linear world is a nice change of pace. The story is at times too railroady, and it does have some glitches, but overall I enjoyed it.

Excellent expansion for an excellent game. The dungeons are vastly improved over the BG 1. With regard to the transgender character, majority of one-line NPCs are strictly heterosexual in the series anyway, and nobody is calling that political agenda or undeveloped characters--that is a prime example of selective bias--thus, I applaud the effort. Besides, the quest is well written and touching.

Siege of Dragonspear (SoD) is a frustrating and loving tribute to Baldurs gate. There are many aspects that are lovingly produced, with nearly everything fully voiced and a reasonably large amount of character and story work that's outside the main plot. The controversies that I heard about going in just...never came up? The plot is relatively predictable, but much like BG1 the fun is in how you get there. The combat here is much better than BG1 and the increased visual quality of environments made with 2016 tools is palpable.

The downside comes in the form of the structure and the tone of the story. There's nothing wrong with a simple plot and I would have enjoyed one. However, it is possible to learn about reasons to distrust characters, reasons to suspect who is really behind events, but you will rarely be given an option to bring what you discover up in dialog. Instead, you meet your antagonist a number of times, and each time they say they are gonna do the thing and call you evil and leave. It's frustrating to be learning about the details of what is happening behind the scenes and never have the option to use that information. Regularly, the game will appear to give you the opportunity to take radically different positions. Unfortunately, more often than not it is simply for the player to be satisfied with choosing the closest answer to their character. You can't really redirect the plot and it's frustrating the the game frequently suggests you could.

On the other hand, I feel like I missed much. Dialog can be structured poorly so it's hard to tell how someone will hear what you say. Side quests can be easy to miss. I think I missed a lot of content, but the game does not give you much help to find it. It's frustratingly easy to miss side content and it's common that you accidentally cut off your access to longer-term quests because you completed minor quests instead. It would be fine if the game's plot reflected this somehow, but the campaign often feels pitched towards characters who are excited to navigate dialogs to gain the greatest rewards and rarely rewards players who turn down wealth in narrative terms.

The tone of the story is also a departure from BG1 and I found it frustrating. Playing a chaotic good character, I rarely wanted to align myself with the law or with evil, but most responses have choices that are close to lawful good, neutral, and chaotic evil. The first and last options are often cartoonish, which I found frustrating in an expansion to a game that often had more grounded dialog.

Overall, I played though this in multiplayer with two friends and we had a great time. The flaws and frustrations in how you can impact the story, or how limited your dialog choices are, simply dampen how much fun this game could have been. Who knows - maybe you will enjoy this 'take' on BG more than the tone and approach in BG1.

If you liked the base game, you'll probably like this DLC (essentially it's Baldur's Gate 1.5).
Plot: Not as great as I was hoping, but not as bad as I was expecting
Characters: Personally, I liked most of the new characters. Their interactions were pretty interesting/funny and the voice acting was generally on-point (though sometimes, like in the case of Voghiln and Corwin, left me somewhat disappointed).
Music: Very well done; no complaints, other than maybe an overuse of the (good) main theme in certain parts.
The main complaint I do have lies with Beamdog's decision to pack the DLC into a .zip, which makes editing/modding exceptionally difficult; if something in SoD breaks and you don't have a prior save to load or if you can't find a work-around using the console, you're basically SOL - this happened to me with one of the romances, and though it doesn't matter since they don't carry over to BG2, it was still frustrating to miss entire interactions because I couldn't fix the problem myself.

The Mass Effect: Andromeda of Baldur's Gate. It's physically painful to hear the vast majority of the dialogue, and the game railroads incessantly. All the characters' personalities have changed for the worse.

Never buying anything Beamdog has touched ever again. Avoid at all costs.

Thanks to Nine Hells these Beamdog characters were never allowed to touch anything in Original Saga except for violently inserting couple of absolutely redundant party-joinable meme generators who are all beyond terrible. You wanna proof? Try this.

EDIT: It shows 0 hours, but my actual play time for SOD was roughly ~30 hours (added to 80 hours for BG:EE, for a total of 110 hours in both games).

I'm a complete newcomer to the Baldur's Gate games. Although I'd always heard about them, I'm coming to them now in 2020 for the very first time, 100% blind to story details, with no familiarity whatsoever with AD&D rules (pen & paper or otherwise).

I absolutely fell in love with BG:EE in every way, from the immensely enjoyable combat and the feel of the true roleplaying experience to the absolutely excellent story...and I'm happy to say that the quality of the story continues in Siege of Dragonspear which *beautifully* locks into place between BG1 and BG2 (I'm early in BG2 at the time of this review). SOD is a game that rewards you for overcoming BG1's big bad by giving you a heroic send off to embark on a large-scale siege. Thanks to the fact that SOD came out nearly 20 years after the first game, there are essentially no more hardware limitations, so the devs took the opportunity to MASSIVELY crank up the scope. What I mean is that in SOD, you'll see the streets of Baldur's Gate teeming with huge numbers of people like never before, and it's all part of a gripping plot; a refugee crisis in the face of an impending invasion. Without giving too much away, this culminates in large scale battles with massive enemy numbers. The flipside of this is a brilliantly dark plot twist that sets up the events of BG2.

The soundtrack is outstanding (much better than BG1). The visuals, dungeon layouts, and quests are all excellent (in many ways improved over BG1). Again, I'm just starting BG2, so I can only compare to BG1...but the layouts of dungeons and the artwork here are the best I've seen in the series so far. There's an organic feel that really pulls you in; like the very best RPGs, you feel you're in a rich, immersive world that was here before you and that rewards exploration. For example (slightly spoilerish), in one area, you make your way up the side of a cliff, into a dragon's lair (and you'll likely have to sneak past the dragon)...from there into a series of caves controlled by bugbears...and then deeper still, into an ancient temple.

One thing I absolutely *loved* (reminiscent of one of my favorites, Morrowind) is the feeling that you can discover events or parts of the world that are just that: features of a world that was here before you and has nothing to do with you. It could be a note on the corpse of a doomed adventurer, a vampire locked beneath ruins, a cult being controlled by a mysterious being... This is all extremely, extremely well done. It's clear that a lot of thought and care was put into this world.

And did I mention that the locations are gorgeous? A definite improvement over BG1...but not so much that it's jarring or out-of-place. Again, as a total newcomer, SOD felt like a seamless continuation.

I can't praise the Baldur's Gate games enough. Not only do I have BG1, SOD, and BG2 on Steam, I also recently purchased them for android as well. Unbelievable that I can play these games on a mobile device too. I will be revisiting these worlds again and again in the coming years.

These games are now cherished favorites of mine.

After refreshing the original Baldur's Gate games and releasing their Enhanced Editions, Beamdog brings us the newly developed Siege of Dragonspear. An expansion to Baldur's Gate EE and the first new entry to the Bhaalspawn saga since Throne of Bhaal, over 15 years ago. It follows our hero's story from the defeat of Sarevok to his arrival in Amn, bridging the gap between the end of the first and beginning of the second game. The question of course is, does this expansion measure up to the originals and is it a worthy addition?

The defeat of Sarevok brought but a brief respite to the city of Baldur's Gate. Soon, the aasimar Caelar Argent, messiah of a new faith, at the helm of a crusading army of fanatics begins a rampage in the north. Droves of refugees flood Baldur's Gate bringing with them misery and strange rumours. For reasons unknown, Argent takes over the storied Dragonspear castle, portal to the Nine Hells and staging point of the Devil invasions of old. Threatened, the great cities of the Sword Coast band together to storm the castle and bring Argent's crusade to an end. The Bhaalspawn, recently acclaimed as the hero of Baldur's Gate, finds themselves drawn into this conflict, while a mysterious and immensely powerful hooded man keeps invading their dreams, seeking to exploit their divine potential for his own nefarious goals.

Unlike the first Baldur's Gate that begun rather unassumingly, progressively raising the stakes as it went, here the stakes begin and remain high throughout. The player follows the army's march towards Dragonspear castle and the siege that follows. Participating in skirmishes and larger battles along the way. This time, the world is not open, there is always a forward momentum and you can't stray too far from the current position of your army. Still, each chapter provides for enough opportunities to explore and do some dungeon crawling. The story itself is not exceptional. The early stages when it keeps you guessing were arguably the best section. Later it starts losing steam, with the ending in particular feeling rather contrived. Regardless, it is decent enough and kept me engaged throughout.

The expansion corrects several of the original game's shortcomings. Mostly by refreshing its level and quest design and bringing it closer to the sequel. Indeed the dungeons here are a great deal of fun to explore. Far from the dull and cramped dungeons of old, here they are memorable, spacious and full of interesting tidbits and secrets. Quests are fairly diverse, there are very few simple fedex quests and many that can be completed in numerous ways. Another significant change concerns the companions. Gone are the myriad bland companions from the original. Only a select handful return and they all have much more personality. Lots of banter is here, some companion quests and even romance... for better or worse. Thankfully, yet again the expansion follows the path set by the sequel.

Praise aside, there are a few things that can rub fans the wrong way. This aforementioned companion cull being an obvious one. Several favourites simply didn't make the cut and even those that do return can feel a bit different. That's only natural, different writers are involved. Personally, I was not particularly bothered. I found that the old characters were treated with enough respect and I enjoyed seeing more of the ones that do return. The expansion could also be accused of pandering, there is a fair amount of fanservice here. The hooded man and his prominence in the story is a prime example. At least once you become aware of his real identity. But overall I was far from offended. And if you are a Baldur's Gate fan, probably you will appreciate some of that pandering after 15 years of nothing anyway.

Then of course there is the transgender controversy. The game contains the first ever transgender character in the saga. Some minor NPC in the army camp that gives you a quest. Only to later on reveal that when she was born her parents thought of her a boy, only later realizing she was a girl. A small, entirely missable piece of content that has caused an explosive reaction from fans. Do I consider this a big deal? No. I really do not. I do question why the need to include it. It doesn't make much sense in a setting where you can change your sex using magic anyway and it certainly doesn't in any way promote trans rights. The only thing it would do is engender controversy, which it did. This expansion did not need that controversy, it can stand on its own.

All in all, this is a great addition to the series. Mechanically it is better than the first game and contains enough content to feel worthwhile. Of course, it was great to see more of old favourites and receive some fanservice. Why not? Controversy aside, I recommend this to all fans of the saga. It is a shame that Beamdog seems unwilling to make more expansions. I, at least, would be happy to buy more. If not in the Bhaalspawn saga, then some Icewind Dale expansion or other would be welcome too.

The DLC does little to answer the question of how the Bhaalspawn was captured by Irenicus, bridging the gap between BG1 and 2. The crusade plot is okay but the twist with the villain at the end was predictable. The DLC starts well, hunting down one of Sarevok's last remaining companions but this quickly turns frustrating as your NPCs all ditch you, taking their equipment with you. You lose all your gold and the NPCs chastise you like you're the bad guy for being pissed off about helplessly being robbed. Lastly, the game is completely disconnected from BG1 too. I played with an evil party, killed Dynaheir and Minsc and yet the pair of them are alive in SoD. Awful. Once you exit Baldur's Gate, which has really been cut down to size for no good reason that I can think of besides saving file size for all those refugee models, travelling about is really awkward and clunky as once you enter one area, you cannot back track. I couldn't even bring myself to complete this game, I just looked up the story afterwards. 3/10 would not recommend even for free.

This is an abomination. I don't mind a transgender character or pre-sequels. But if you played the first game getting here, some of the characters you brought will suddenly be a completely different person. Different personality, different voices when selecting. All just in a couple of weeks after you killed Sarevok. The party I wanted to keep I suddenly despise for completely the wrong reasons. There is no context, it's just forced upon you. There is plenty of room for all kinds of characters satisfying everyone, you don't change existing ones like that. They need character development, not blatant PC showed down your throat. This is not diversity, you are narrowing down the personality and the experience to something that is completely opposite of that.

The story is dull, the writing is bad. I met a new companion I actually liked, the skald who called me a wench (not as an insult, maybe a bit blunt), there was not one dialogue option to show interest in his comment or flirting back but 5 options to talk down on him like a gimp. Not even stay silent or cancel conversation. Safana, the sultry rogue is just a doppelganger now, so I killed it in the first dungeon. That's the only thief in the game btw that stay's in your party. Apart from the obnoxious cleric/thief. Apparantly Safana was part of some sexist agenda in the original games so they had to change her personality and force us to use her. I seem to remember Shar-Teel, the manhating fighter almost as strong as Minsc, you know the one that forces every other man she sees to duel her to the death. And Viconia, from the Drow who often talks down on men. You know the Drow are a matriarchal society? Not to mention the Gwendoline Christie type Branwen cleric. That's only half of the strong female cast. None of these interesting characters are in the game apart from Viconia and doppelganger Safana.

There are 4 evil characters. (WTF!?) Not even enough for a full party. This game would have been alot better if they just left all the original characters in the game, even without any context. And they could build some uninteresting stories for the new ones. The only well written part is Dorn (as usual), I guess Neera is alright and I haven't played with Rasaad. The only new character in this DLC I liked is Voghnir, the skald I mentioned who is completely gimped in dialogue.

The combat after the starting dungeon with the invisibility-potion addicted assassins is too easy, even the dragon I just happened to bump into in a cave without context was easy. The progression is incredibly linnear and it is intentionally hard to play evil. I kind of want to join the crusade at times both for roleplaying purposes and for despising the poorly written cast of the good guys, but every conversation I have about it is filled with 'We must stand against it' or 'We must crush her'. WE DON'T EVEN KNOW HER AGENDA, and yet we are forced to hate the bad guy without knowing why.

Fuck you for doing this and making this look so appealing. Don't buy this. Play the original enhanced editions instead. At least Beamdog made one good thing, Dorn. Most of the other work was already done by modders.

Introduction

Siege Of Dragonspear is a DLC that takes place very shortly after the end of Baldur's Gate and begins after Baldurs Gate 2 begins. The story takes about 15 hours to beat and i really enjoyed my time with this package as a whole, Siege Of Dragonspear has a great story and enjoyable gameplay and dungeons.

For context this review is from someone who is playing the saga for the first time, I am writing this review after playing BG 2 because i wanted to see how the story tied together, without spoiling anything this DLC ends pretty much as soon as BG 2 begins and i thought this did a good job of bridging the gap between the two stories.

Story

The story of the DLC is that another child of Bhaal, named Caelar Argent is leading a crusade that is soon to reach Baldur's Gate, as the Hero of Baldurs gate you are given the duty to lead an army to war against the crusade and stop Caelar Argent before Baldur's Gate is attacked. You start in Baldur's Gate then shortly after you head to a new continent to face Caelar head on. Caelar is an absolutely fantastic antagonist, she is morally complex and has great character development as the story progresses, by the end you really understand her motives and what her goal is, she isn't just a mindless killer or tryant she's leading this army for what she believes is a good cause. I found she is a much more interesting villain than Saverok and I personally think she is as good as, if not better than the villain in BG 2.

My only real issue with the story was that it ended rather abruptly, you can tell when you're at the conclusion but then it just seems to end so suddenly, i originally thought i had somehow got the bad ending or done something wrong so it would've been nice to have another 30 minutes or so to wrap things up, apart from that I really enjoyed everything else.

Gameplay

As far as gameplay goes at the start of SOD you'll be looking for your old companions to recruit who are scattered around Baldur's Gate, the introduction serves mostly for story purposes but it's nice to explore Baldur's Gate when the streets are packed with people. The way most of the exploration works in SOD is that you are given several small areas to explore that are dense with content, you can't explore a full map unfortunately and the areas you explore are locked to the story chapter you are on, once you finish that chapter you won't be able to return and you will unlock a new section of the map to explore.

There are several companions to choose from to form your party, some new some old, almost all of the companions of the original game do show up in SOD but not all of them will join you, this is unfortunate because it means you might not be able to have the same party as you did in the base game, however I thought the new companions they added were good and were a solid addition to my party. SOD also has more interactivity with your companions than the original game, similar to BG 2 your companions will often strike up a conversation with you and you can respond however you wish.

One thing that really stood out to me was that SOD does things that would not be possible in the classic version of Baldurs Gate, it really takes advantage of more modern hardware by having tons of NPC's on the screen at the same time. Most of the cutscenes are rendered in game but at times there can by what looks like a hundred characters on screen at once, this would never have been possible in the original game and it makes for some fantastic moments, like during the actual siege you feel like you're trapped in a battle between two gigantic armies and I was genuinely wowed at some points.

Conclusion

I think the reason a lot of people don't like SOD is because nothing of importance really happens that will affect BG 2, however I'd argue this story came out years after Baldurs Gate 2 and that story has been set in stone, there's a reason this is an expansion for the first game and not the second, and that's because it's an epilogue for the original story, it's not supposed to feel like a sequel.

Overall I'd highly recommend playing this, especially if you're new to Baldur's Gate it bridges the gap between the two games and has a fantastic antagonist and story, the new companions are fun and the dungeons are great to crawl through. It's a fantastic epilogue to the original story, apart from some minor nitpicks about the abrupt ending and being unable to return to previous areas playing Siege Of Dragonspear was an absolute blast.

Played BGI original since release so had to grab the EE. Playing through them all again was great, except for this expansion.

Not only does it add nothing, it actually takes away from the experience. Very poorly done by Beamdog.

Don't waste your money, skip it and enjoy Baldur's Gate as it was originally.

it's fine, it's alright. sometimes i almost felt like i was playing baldur's gate when i played this.

however, i cannot wrap my head around entar silvershield's voice acting. it is the worst thing i have ever heard in my life, and i have listened to goatlord on a tape player that i constructed from baling wire and empty cans of beans. who is this man, who did this?

edit: i got up to the part. you know, the part that made so many shut-ins piss themselves in anger. it's just that someone exists, that's all it is. it wasn't even as clumsy and out of place as i was expecting. most people would probably miss it. what a bunch of snowflakes. i hope no one tells them about the girdle of masculinity/femininity in the base game, we might have to witness the worlds most embarrassing riot

I first played pool of radiance back in the late 80's, and have played entire gold box set, entire BG series, nwn, and nwn 2 a ton over the years. BG series is by far my faborite.

Siege of Dragonspear feels more like a DLC for baldur's gate than a standalone game, but, to me, that's not a bad thing. It incorporates some of the mass-battle feel that you see a bit in Hordes of the Underdark, which could bother some people, but I was fine with that too. That's different from anything else in the bg series, but as it game out so much later it went over well.

Overall, I'd say that as long as you view it as a quality DLC or custom module that actually works without hours needed to debug like most of the online mods I find, that you'll enjoy it.

Siege of Dragonspear is a well-made, interesting adventure, but not without flaws.
Positives:
  • Interesting quests
  • Diverse enemies, some of which are rare in D&D computer games
  • Appealing new characters
  • Replayability. Although the main theme of the expansion is the inevitability of one's destiny and the player cannot change the major outcome, many things can be done differently and have different impact on how the events unfold. For example, choosing an option that promises an easier battle in the near future the player have to face consequences afterwards.

Negatives:
  • Main story dialogues. There are many hints scattered around about what's going on. However, dialogues are written as though the main character flies like a hurricane through the main plot, not looking around and not contemplating the events. My main character was an intelligent mage, so there were many moments when my character would have never said any given possible replies (maybe, only being highly intoxicated) but I had to choose in order to proceed.
  • [*] Exotic enemies have no story. It would be great to know how this or that unique monster has ended up in its current location.

A fairly linear but well crafted story to bridge the gap between games. While there are fewer and smaller maps than in the base game, they're well designed and feature a good selection of interesting side-quests. The new characters are fun and well-written.

One of the issues with SoD is how on-the-rails this expansion is but despite often only having the illusion of choice here (relative to the base game) it competently tells a good story in a polished manner. While there isn't as much room here to just explore for days on end, that isn't necessarily all that bad as it allows for better storytelling/pacing; this is ultimately a matter of taste.

My only real complaint with SoD is that its story is almost a little too epic compared to the base game to the point it makes you question why anyone even really noticed your previous heroic efforts. Similarly, a major aspect of the conclusion, which appears to be setting itself up for a sequel, isn't resolved in BGII or any of its current expansions.

All-in-all, this is a nice addition to the base game, especially if you run with at least some of the new characters.

When Siege of Dragonspear says it takes place in between Baldur's Gate 1 and Baldur's Gate 2, it means so in the most literal way imaginable: you start the game mere days after BG1's ending, and you finish it in what is essentially the intro cutscene of BG2.

In a word, Siege of Dragonspear is faithful.

Every single question you may have had about the transition between the games - why did my party consist of those characters, why was soandso missing from my party, why did Imoen dual into a mage, where did my equipment go - all of them are answered. Every decision is given justification and context.

Beamdog's dedication to verisimilitude is remarkable, unbelievable, and cool as hell. It is a miracle that this game even exists. They even brought back the original voice actors!

Now, there is one problem. It's not very good.

It's not necessarily a bad game, but it's certainly a messy one. Everything original to this campaign - the story, the NPCs, the SoD-only companions - is very hit or miss, and it's leaning more toward miss. The VO isn't great. The writing is fine and the jokes are funny, but it can't quite nail a serious tone without coming across as goofy. It's full of bugs, crashes, and a shocking amount of scripting issues. Keep that Quick Save handy.

It's absolutely beautiful and has some of the best art in the entire series, and it pushes the Infinity Engine to its absolute limit. At the very least it's not surprising when things inevitably do start collapsing on themselves.

The combat is very fun. AD&D has a lot of problems, but mid-level combat is not one of them. You have tons of tools at your disposal (as do your enemies) without each encounter feeling like a dual between overpowered mages and micro'd rogues.

Unfortunately, it was impossible to shake the feeling that everything I was doing was meaningless. It was nice to get more context about what happens to the Hero of Baldur's Gate prior to BG2, but I found myself ignoring gear and being flippant in conversations because I knew none of it mattered. This isn't the fault of SoD, but it weakened a lot the reasons I play CRPGs.

At its best, SoD feels like a true mid-level D&D campaign - but at its worst, it feels like an especially ambitious mod with too many constraints and not enough talent to achieve its vision. I enjoyed my time with it very much, but I do not think this is one campaign I will return to.

This feels like multiple writers were responsible for different parts of the story and not all of them were good.

Some events that take place were pretty sweet and felt like a proper epic adventure but some were on par with fanfic. For an asset flip... I mean DLC costing $28.95 after 4 years, it's safe to say this is over priced.

Be ware this game can be quite frustrating if you don't know what to expect, characters leaving the group without warning and taking with them everything they were carrying. walking to certain areas force you to progress the game and prevent you from completing quests.

    Inconsistent writing for example (spoilers)

there's a couple characters from black pits and bg1, Baeloth the entertainer and Bellowgulp Bluefingers.
In bg1 Baelot appears and you have the option of saying you met before in the black pits, in the pits you don't have the option of saying you met before so reason dictates the pits was first in the order of play,
In SOD you may meet Baeloth unless you killed him in bg1. I always kill him so I don't know how he interacts with this next character.
Bellowgulp appears in SOD but there's no mention of having met in the pits, in the pits there's no mention of having met.
Instead both interactions treat him as a stranger and your efforts in saving his people from slavery didn't matter. Both the pits and SOD were written at the same time so there's no excuse. This is one example.

Siege of Dragonspear. My 300+ Hours I've only probably touched this about 40 to 60 of those hours. Most of them are me hitting a spot where I just don't want to go any further.

The game offers you the illusion of choice which is counter-intuitive to what Baldur's Gate 2 sought to provide. You choose options and then it directs you to the path that you were supposed to choose.

As a story it fails in all aspects except for the finale which leads you to Jon Irenicus. David Warner does an amazing job here, as he did in BG2, even if the characters that are included don't quite match up to it.

I do not recommend you purchase this game. I recommend you find someone who can tell you how it ends or watch a Youtube Video of the Story and skipping it altogether. Time and time again I've hit a wall that just makes me NOT want to play BG2 with my character as seen by the hour differences in the two games.

Considering all the negativity that surrounded this at launch, I expected the worst. It's a linear story to bridge the gap between BG1 and BG2 and at that it succeeds just fine. I'd recommend going through it at least once. It's just more BG and I'm fine with that.

The decision to change the UI not just in the DLC but in the core game as well was not a good choice. There is no option available in game to change to the previous setting either. Every portion of the UI is a downgrade from the darker colors to the font style and size.

I tried to play until I grew to like it, or at least ignore it but it was such a strain on the eyes. I never actually got into the DLC itself. I didn't want to mess with moding the game and just uninstalled it.

If you played the Baldur's Gate 1 campaign/story first you will probably find Siege of Dragonspear a disappointing and mostly frustrating experience. The DLC suffers from some horrible design choices like not being able to use the crew you assembled in the first game and not having the ability to backtrack.

The DLC got a lot flak back in the day for what was construed as poorly written characters. I assume this was the reason why a lot of your crew just vanishes into thin air in the DLC - they wanted the player to use the characters that they had spent so much time designing. The trouble is that if you've spent some 30-40 hours playing with a crew that suits your playstyle you will most likely not want to use the new characters and it just feels like a nuisance to go through the recruiting process once again especially since a lot of the characters you've grown accustomed to aren't available. Especially so since the NPCs that have replaced your old companions seem to be quite poorly written.

The DLC also seems to be extremely linear and it seems that there is no backtracking between areas like in the original game. At least there wasn't in the time I spent playing. What this means is that you have to finish the quests in the area before you progress or you can't finish them.

I've played through the original game a couple of times throughout the years and always enjoyed it. This DLC, however, I couldn't get past a few hours. It just feels boring, poorly designed and a waste of time.

This is an decent if somewhat flawed entry to the legendary Baldur's Gate series.
It's not up to the standard of BG 1 or the superb BG 2, but it's roughly on the same level of quality as the original expansion Tales of the Sword Coast.
The backlash about the politics in the writing is ridiculous btw. It really doesn't affect the game in any significant way and the whole thing has been totally blown out of proportion by a tiny but loud minority of gamers. Anyway onto the review.
    Pros:
    - Some pretty satisfying and creepy dungeon crawls.
    - More or less faithful to the style of the original games. There's been some interface tweaks but they're so minor it doesn't really affect the game much either way.
    - Just the fact that we get more Baldur's Gate content after all these years.
    Cons:
    - The storyline is OK but definitely not as captivating as the originals.
    - Because the game is faithful to the originals, a lot of the annoying things about the originals are still here and are still hella annoying. For example many of the companions hit their weight limit basically as soon as they put on their weapons and gear and are hence useless at carrying anything else. Also, probably 15% of the game time is spent shuffling gear around in the minuscule inventory space you are given, which just takes away time from the fun stuff.
    - The inherited design issues are compounded by poor level design choices, which they could have avoided. For example, you start the game with a group of companions, then the companions are all taken away, and their items (except their equipped items) get dumped in a chest. That chest is at the top of a tall building and you have to ferry the items in one character's inventory through four different areas up and down stairs just to sell the gear, which takes quite some time and is a hella boring start to the game. This farce could have been SO easily avoided by better design choices. Another example is you get the chance to buy some great monk gear, but there's no monks in your party at that point so why bother right? However, in the next chapter you can recruit a monk, but by that point you've been barred from returning to the shop! Ugh. Similar annoyances occur quite a lot and it makes it seem like the developers didn't even PLAY their own game to see what it was actually like to slog through their level designs.

The game is a bit frustrating, but overall I'm very happy that we are getting more BG content and that developers recognise the market for it. I hope in future installments they will critically examine what actually worked in this game and what definitely did not work so they can create more enjoyable content.

I don't know what they were thinking with that UI/HUD change, but it's terrible. Like strain on the eyes makes you not want to play terrible with no way to change it without third party mods.
