(This review is strictly based on the Sandbox mode to focus solely on the car and engine designing features)
Pros:
- Sandbox and exporting being able to build and export vehicles from a wide array of styles
- Dyno and traction maps displaying the performance and handling of the cars
- Early warning pop-ups alerting users of engine, traction & handling faults
- High resolution graphics giving an appealing display
Cons:
- camera views are restricted, limiting the range that the player can pan around
- vehicle builds are limited and recreating vehicles based on Pre-ABS vintages are all but uncontrollable
- vehicle body styles cannot be altered to incorporate large displacement engines
- Horsepower control
- compression ratios can get unrealistically low for certain applications
- fuel choice is restricted to petrol, no race fuel, diesel, or hybrid-electrics.
- Induction is limited to turbochargers, no superchargers
- no dyno tuning for precise engine modification
- The auto lock feature glitches parts to kingdom come
- paint customization is woefully limited, bland, buggy, and inconsistent
- even with designing sports cars, the game is not friendly to high horsepower applications
- All truck options are single rear wheel non-dually
Conclusion:
The game is very interesting and can be fun however some of the aspects regarding the realistic features of designing a car and engine for a game based on creating and marketing a car get limited.
However: I understand that the building process being simplified allows a wider range of people being able to enjoy the game without turning it into a AutoCAD/Blender hybrid of a complex nightmare.
Some of the limitations do pose as a damper on people drying to build a JDM/Euro/American performance car.
Overall the game is clever and unique with respect to making a car builder that you can make however the game leaves much to be desired and yet has an untapped well of potential within its grasp.

stage 1 : Putting the Mitsubishi A6M aircraft engine on an all-carbon chassis and the body of an all-carbon bulletproof car worth the price of the Titanic
stage 2 : mess up the engine setting For 45 minutes to not explode during the start and put a 2 massive jet engine as a turbocharger And hope it works
stage 3 : Design the car as if you were summoning a demon from the underworld
stage 4 : import the car in to the beamND.drive.Be proud of what you made.drive it at speed of light.crash the car so hard that you just see a ashes of the car
stage 5 : Close the game and thank God once again that you are not a car engineer
stage 6: Open the Automation and spend your another 2 hours of your life time to make another Eco-friendly war crime

Some of the controls are less easy to use, but everything seems to work fine. I have a hard time panning the camera, and fixtures are hard to place at times. But like I said before, everything works great otherwise. Don't let my mess-ups keep you from playing.

This game proves that as long as you're able to make mistakes and mess around, you can learn anything. You're building cars from almost nothing while considering so many different variables and design choices. Admittedly, its not close to real life, because that would be so limitless, but its so good that you start to forget that actual car designers cant just make a V10 engine from scratch in an hour. I've already reviewed beam, but the Automation + BeamNG cross support is something that puts this into a legendary tier that no game ever can really compete with. Its almost an new genre of game.
I really cant put into words how thankful I am that these games exist. Design and engineering is my life's passion but I've never had the resources possible to fully envision my dreams. This game lets you finally put that part of you to the test, and its so satisfying to finally be able to do it and realize it in the most accurate, diverse, and dynamic car simulator ever made. My praise goes out to the developers slowly working on this game (and beam!), bringing it new content and more possibilities almost every month.
I would happily buy this game for $120 if I could.

There is couple of things i would change if it comes to the engine building.
- There is limitations on turbo sizes if the engine is too small. So i would like to take that limit off the game or at least get the limits higher.
- Also engine RPM limit should rise higher in my opinion.(if rotary or smaller engines) and it is possible if we are talking smaller stroked engines.
- I8 engine?
- It also would be nice to have superchargers to the game. Now it only have naturally aspirated and turbo engines. So that would be nice to have.
- If we talk about engine types, wankel(rotary) engines would be nice to add too.
-For the bonus if we talk about different car body types(i mean like F1 body or something) would be special. Its really limited if u try to look something like that on the workshop. Normal car bodies there is decent amount so that;s not so critical in my opinion.
To be honest developers should focus on the engine and car side of the game and not the campaign, because 95% of the players don;t play that. Sorry about my bad english :)

cuz i mean making cars and not getting to drive them feels unfinished in a way
with beamng you can export it onto there and you can actually drive them (and blow them up of course which is always good)
while the exported cars arent as detailed as cars directly made for the game or by the devs theyre still fun to drive, except if you completely ignore every notice the game gives you
anyways its cool

What I don't like
1. It is not at all a tycoon game, not yet at least. Most of the tycoon features aren't even available if any.
2. You have to buy another game to drive your cars.
3. They never update and when they do it's something small.
4. They are charging $29.99 for an incomplete game.
5. They have DLC packs for sale but don't even have a partially finished product.
Finish the game already! I was watching this game for years and finally gave in. I totally regret the decision to purchase this game. I was expecting a car company tycoon game not a car designer exporter!

The tycoon portion is not fully fledged yet, but the coming updates are sure to fix some of the gripes people have had with it over the past year or two.
The sandbox mode is exquisite, it's my favorite aspect of this game. The ability to build anything, from a crazy, mid-engined V16 hypercar to an econo-box, devoid of any style or soul.
The coming updates are very promising, with complete reworks of multiple game mechanics. Now, of course, I never buy a product or software based on promised updates/revisions. With that being said, even in its current state, this game is a masterpiece.
Point blank: buy it, and get creative with your design choice.

Once you start playing and have figured out how to properly build and design your car, it can leave you playing this game for hours, trying to get that one car to drive perfect, lots of fun for everyone, because you can design your car pretty much however you like, you can even go extreme and create something hillarous for a laugh with your friends.
If you then decide that you would like to play the game and buy it, I cannot recomend you enough that you buy BeamNg.drive with it, its the perfect addon for the game, so you can even try out the cars youve build yourself, aswell as installing lots of mods from the steam workshop.

I've poured a lot of time and effort into learning and relearning the game and tolerating the constant bugs and crashes to make some of my automotive design dreams come true, even becoming somewhat of a veteran and brand advocate for this game, but at this point with the community and the attitude from some of the devs - which, mind you, is a very deep and not at all new issue - I can't recommend it anymore. I'm fed up. I'm really sorry to have to say it like this, but when there's consistent, meaningful progress being made, I might come back. I've met a lot of great people and had a lot of fun, because there is so much good about this game. Nothing else does what it does, and that's why it's so hard to finally let it go.

this and beamng is literally all i play now as every other game has been ruined for me.
insane for anyone who wants to mess with the ultimate duo of real automotive sandbox games.

I have played this game for about 5 years.
It is complicated and not for the faint of heart, but it is extremely fun if you like cars.
With sandbox you can design your very own car and engine from 1946-2020.

I got this game two years ago around Christmas time, and I decided that since it has been basically two years and I just reached 1000 hours today, that I would write a review. I remember when I first started I struggled to make cars look decent and get strong performance numbers, but now that I have been playing for a decent time, I thoroughly enjoy this game.
Pros;
- So many possibilities for design, whether exterior, interior, or drive-train
- Comprehensive UI layout
- Very pretty graphics
- Realistic engine, chassis, drivetrain, etc. creation
- The developers are on top of the issues
Cons;
- Open Beta has quite a few issues, but like I said, the devs are quick to fix
- $29.99 is a bit much, but the game is totally worth it once you start figuring things out

This game may seem complicated at first, but it will soon become easy - it will probably help if you watch the in-game tutorial and other tutorials on YouTube.
It is quite expensive, but I think it is worth the price due to the multiple possibilities of this game.

The dev team is on the small side, so updates are slow, We dont have Diesel engines, cant adjust how many turbos, limitied on turbo sizes, no superchargers, no nitrous, and limited tire options.
As someone thats into competitive drag racing, I do love using this game to make cars to export to Beam.... BUT I wish there where more options for motors, adjustable power adders, more tire options for proper drag radials, possibly some day add the ability to Tub the rear, possibly alter the chassis geomtery by hand / cad editor... but I know thats difficult and not something everyone would want.
So here is WHY I love this game, because I see potential, I see what this game CAN be down the road... already its a great game, fantastic buy if its on sale.
My one gripe with the game, I had to pay extra for the V16 engine.... after I backed this game years ago.... as soon as it was on steam..... but, its whatever

So yeah, while the design tools are excellent, the actual campaign of the game is actually pretty obtuse. When they say they recommend you only play it after watching the tutorials, they aren't kidding. Despite a few hundred hours playing, I have barely touched the campaign and for good reason. The time I did try it I had no idea what I was doing and my company just continuously lost money despite my best efforts.
Updates are slow to roll out, although that's because the dev team consists of about 5 people and a game like this is pretty ambitious for a team of that size. Also, the game has updated game engines about 3 times since release (kee, UE 4.17, UE 4.21, UE 4.24) which is really annoying because all previous mods stop working. Thankfully this game has a pretty good modding community, so a lot of mods made since the switch to UE 4 have been updated, although there's still quite a few that haven't been. The upside of all the engine changes is the game has become much more optimized over the years, looking much better, running smoother, and loading faster. Heck, before the switch from UE 4.21 to 4.24, the game would take 5-10 minutes to load at launch. Now it only takes a minute tops, and that's with a few hundred mods installed.
With all that being said, if you're like me and love designing cars this game is definitely for you. There's plenty of mods to play around with as well if you feel you don't have enough tools at your disposal. It also doubles as an excellent vehicle creator for beamng if you have that as well. If you're looking for a tycoon game where you manage your own car company, I would probably hold off, because as of now, the tycoon campaign is a confusing mess of menus and spreadsheets.

I just wish there was more content on the engine design...
- Add the ability to change the height of the piston ring lands.
- Add the thickness of piston rings etc etc...
- Add Nitrous Oxide to the mix
- Add Superchargers!!!
- Add the ability to change the materialistic structure of the air intakes, tube size etc etc...
- Add the ability to change air filtration devices like cone filter, paper filters, mesh filters and even no filters at all.
- PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE add diesel fuel and a higher compression ranges so we can all build diesel engines!!! :)
- Add the ability to change fuel injector nozzle sizes and carburetor customization.
- Add the ability to adjust main bearing and connecting rod bearing clearances.
- Because of the oil clearances add different oils :)
- Add the ability to adjust rocker arm ratio
- Add the ability to adjust the cams lobe size, lobe duration and lobe separation angle. (There should be a whole tab just for the cam specifications!)
- Add Rotary engines
- Add W engines
- Add the ability to adjust radiator size and thicknesses to achieve the proper cooling specification.

So i've played this game since a very early version on the 'Kee' game engine back around 2011~2012 (long before it came to steam). The game has grown a lot over the past decade and the small development team keeps improving it on a steady basis.
I only rarely review a game and I will be very honest about my feelings on this one and go a bit into detail since I feel this game needs this kind of review.
Target audience:
This game has a very specific target audience. I wouldn't recommend this game to casual gamers. According to me, the primary target audience could be described as 'persons who enjoy getting into the technical aspects of designing consumer cars and their combustion engines'. The secondary target audience is 'persons who enjoy running a car company and try to be a succesfull tycoon selling their own car designs'.
Now you may wonder; why is this, according to me, not the primary target audience since it is labeled as a 'tycoon game'?
Well in order to enjoy being a tycoon in this game, you first have to design the cars that you are trying to sell. Therefore, you should find joy in this design process itself in order to enjoy being the tycoon.
Now that you have an indication if you are part of this target audience, I will discuss some of the positive and negative aspects of the game, keeping in mind that it is still in early access. Also mind that these bullets are not placed in any particular order.
Positive points:
- Lots of different engine configurations (i3, i4, i5, i6, V6, V8, v10, v12, v16 DLC, b4, b6 and different kinds of crankshaft and V angle configurations).
- Turbo/NA engine intake configurations (Superchargers are planned to be added)
- A timeline from 1945 to 2020 which has impact on the engines/car parts available and the performance of parts.
- Creative players can really indulge themselves in the extended car designer. There are many different car bodies to choose from, which can be morphed to certain limits and be fully customized to your likings with lots of different car fixtures like headlights, grills, vents, wheels etc. After completion, the car can be photographed in a nicely worked out photo mode with lots of effects.
- A really extensive car market with lots of different car categories to focus your designs and sales on.
- An implemented AI that automatically generates cars/engines for certain markets that serve as competition for your own company.
- An ingame exporter that allows you to export your car designs to other games (for now only BeamNG drive) so that you are able to drive your own designs.
- The dev team does an amazing job keeping in contact with players and trying to fix problems as soon as possible. They are also very kind, and so far have always came up with a solution to a bug or problem I had.
- Steam workshop support. This means that people create lots of extra car bodies, fixtures and photo environments.
- The ingame calculations seem to be very accurate to reality. When recreating real life cars, you will quickly realise that the ingame car with it's specs has very similar performance to it's real life counterpart.
- Car/engine design scenario's; you are asked to design a certain car or engine according to certain requirements and limits. The better you perform, the higher you score.
There certainly are much more positive points, but I think that this covers the most important ones for now.
There are however also some negative points to mention.
Negative points:
- The game is not very easy to learn. If you know a bit about the workings of a car and combustion engine you might find it easier to get into, but for new guys it has a quite steep learning curve. There are ingame tutorials and tooltips, but in the beginning it will take some hours to understand how everything works.
- The campaign user interface is very overwhelming, I still have some trouble figuring out how everything in the campaign works and definitely takes some of the fun away of the tycoon campaign. The UI is however fine for the car and engine designers. The latest version definitely improved the campaign UI a bit.
- Slow development of the game; The dev team is relatively small, this means that in about 8 years time the game has developed from an engine designer to a car and engine designer, and finally into a car company tycoon game. However, it still feels far from finished and I wonder how much longer it will take before the game finally reaches a 1.0 state (we are already in the final year of the ingame timeline, which was still very far away when development started). Another thing to mention is that electric motors were very uncommon back when development of this game started. Now that almost every car manufacturer offers at least one electric car, I feel that this is something that has really outgrown the development of the game for now.
- The game sometimes still crashes. Often these crashes are patched, but new crashes are nevertheless sometimes still occuring.
Conclusion:
I would definitely recommend this game to any person who enjoys cars, engineering and simulation, even more so when you also like playing tycoon games. Learning how to design the cars and engines definitely makes the game worthwile, especially when combined with BeamNG drive. Look at my playtime so far, if you would also count the hours before steam was added it would probably go over 1300 hours, this means that the game is in a really enjoyable state right now, at least for some people. Mind that almost all my playtime consists of designing and almost no campaign playtime. Therefore enjoying tycoon games is not a crucial requirement to like this game.
I however sometimes worry about development time and hope that the devs can keep up the positive attitude they've always had so far.

(also beam ng drive is basically required to have fun with this game currently since the campaign is such an early version)
10/10 Game, very hyped for the upcoming updates. (plz i need supercharger)
