Edit after 10 more hours.
Altaiir the hedgehog is a coffee fueled maniac flag collector. He does not care for zivilians or enemies alike. He only wants flags and will kill anyone in his way. The only thing stopping him is a broken engine and water.

Needless to say, it's a solid game when *you're actually playing*, but you're gonna spend more than 50% of your first 3-4 hours manually traveling between cities and listening to the obscenely long dialogues that each character takes the liberty of gracing you with, and that's just one of the game's many, many time sinkholes. I say the first 3-4 hours because I gave up after that.
You don't get into the actual game until after ONE HOUR of excruciating cut scenes, tutorials and scripted events with like 35% play time (and even then, it's just you walking Altair to the next waypoint to listen to the next monologue).
Every time you finish a mission, you're teleported back to the master's castle at the very start of town, and you have to spend five minutes walking all the way back to the town's entrance to embark on your next quest, which, again, you have to manually travel to.
The Animus lab sections are the worst. You spend 10-15 minutes at a time listening to the scientists argue, then you have to slowly drag Miles through the lab at his crawling leisurely pace to hunt for the one and only object you can interact with next in order to advance the story.
Rinse and repeat. This game is not bad, but isn't really well optimized in regards to convenience and the balance between real and fake gameplay. Go watch it on YouTube then skip to other, better entries in the series.

There were a bunch of bad impressions early on. First, the menu design in this game is inexplicable. To quit the game, you have to quit the memory, then after the loading screen quit the animus, watch Desmond get up, then quit again, only to end up back in the main menu, where you have to select your profile, and then you can actually quit. Sure, you can just alt-f4, but I can’t imagine what the designers were thinking when they approved of this. The other low blow was the complete lack of subtitles. I understand English fine, but I would’ve preferred to have them, even if just for the names. The game also lacks a reload checkpoint option, which would’ve been handy. If you want to reset, you have to let the guards kill Altair.
Once I made peace with the strange design decisions, I found the game enjoyable. The gameplay is similar to other early AC games. There’s a big emphasis on climbing and parkour, but it’s slower and more rigid here. There’s also a lot of combat, which heavily emphasizes counters, and stealth, which feels a bit limited. Apart from hiding in haystacks, or inconspicuously sitting on benches and blending in with monks, it’s all about just not drawing attention to yourself. This is complicated by beggars and drunkards pestering you or people carrying vases and boxes getting in your way. It’s a unique approach, but it’s not a very intricate stealth system. There are also a lot of situations where you have to fight enemies, although in many cases you are encouraged to run away from them, and lose them by blending or hiding after breaking line of sight. In my experience, this is ridiculously hard to do. The thing is, it’s just easier to kill an entire platoon of enemy soldiers than to run away from them. It’s cool when you can pull off an escape though. At least the combat is quite spectacular, with cool finishers and nice animations, although the latter is true to all movement and climbing.
Before the actual assassinations, we have to spend some time in the city and gather info by eavesdropping, interrogation or helping fellow assassins and recruit help by rescuing civilians. Most of these are optional, but you get useful information and NPCs that help you. These tasks have few variations and are very repetitive, and you have to do these before every target. I have to admit though, after I got the hang of the gameplay, I didn’t have a problem with this. After about the fourth target, I did every side activity and never felt like ’oh no, not another civilian rescue’. All of this made me feel like I'm actually preparing for an assassination. What did feel repetitive to me was the monologue of the rescued civilians, which are unskippable, and on top of that the game takes camera control away from you to show the vigilantes you just helped, like the previous twenty times, while I just want to get away so the next patrol won’t find me on top of a dozen guard corpses. Annoying. Though, speaking of the camera, I liked that during cutscenes, or dialogue scenes, you can view the scene from multiple angles. This should be in every game. If you render a cutscene in 3D, might as well add some interactivity by having multiple points of view.
The targets themselves, and actually most characters, were quite memorable and interesting, including the confessions scenes and the writing in general. The story is a strong point of this game. I’m thinking mostly of the story within the Animus, but here the present day events are also heavily emphasized. In later games this much modern day would’ve been annoying, but here I think it’s justified. This is where the story and lore is established after all, I didn’t mind it. I never really cared about Desmond in the sequels, but after playing this game, I understand those who got invested in his story. As for the ending, remembering the beginning of AC2 I expected a cliffhanger, but this was even more abrupt. If I had played this is 2007, this would’ve pissed me off.
The events in the past take place in the Middle East during the third crusade, specifically in Damascus, Acre, Jerusalem and Masyaf castle. The game didn’t really go for historical accuracy, at least less than the sequels, but managed to create a nice atmosphere. The cities look good and detailed (even with the 2007 graphics), and each of them have their own character, with nice architecture and costumes. The music also helped establish the atmosphere, especially the ambient tracks, but the main combat music is the one I remember the most.
I have to say, playing this game was absolutely worth it. Started out rough, but once I got into it, I had a lot of fun with it. I think it holds up really well. It was interesting to see how one of my favorite franchises started.

Our Protagonist, Desmond Miles was trapped in a small room where a doctor comes up to him and says that they want to see his ancestor's past. Cut to Animus, a really big bed looking computer which unlocks Desmond's Memory Block i.e. Altair Ibn l'ahad's Life (his Ancestor) a Master Assassin who is way in his head and is arrogant. Sent on a mission which goes south and then somehow survives but fails and returns back to Masyaf(the HQ of the Assassin's Creed). There we meet Grandmaster Al Mualim who strips away Altair's Rank as he not just failed the mission but the creed.
The Gameplay still feels fresh. The missions even though are similar but the assassination targets are pretty good. The game is made by Ubisoft, who were best known for the Prince of Persia games at that time but they made a new IP i.e. AC. These days they are making really big Open World Grindy Games. But back it's like they had a meter and they found a sweet spot balance for the amount of side missions in the game and the side missions were on point and relevant.
If you haven't played the game go play it. You'll not be disappointed.

LET ME KILL PEOPLE IN PEACE, DAMNIT.
Anyway, that and the requirement where you have to load into your profile to exit the game, means this gets a bit fat thumbs down. It's a shame; I have not played this since it came out on the 360, and looks like I won't get to play it without immense amounts of frustration.
EDIT - I have found a fix for the concrete hay, although if there is a known issue, it should be patched if money is still being made from sales.

Usually I don't take the time to write a proper review on games because I can hardly be fucked, but I just wanted anyone who is tempted to play through all the games to not dread this one, as I was actually surprised by the quality of it. Yes, the missions are VERY repetitive, but it's worthwhile enduring them and at least completing the main story line, as it starts off your knowledge going into the rest of the *better* games. Besides, AC1 is relatively short and it's surprisingly enjoyable.

There is no action here like in the next parts of the series. You will not jump on the wall like a monkey, but slowly and surely climb up. Collision with any pedestrian can knock you down. This game is minimalistic and close to realism.
Also I want to say that there is a lot of wisdom in this game. The statements of some of the characters can be taken apart into quotes. The game touches on the theme of morality and the existence of man in society, of his rights and opportunities.
For me personally it is the best part of the series, but no arguments about tastes.

The story is unique and it is great. Not only it is realistic, but it is also teaches you to look for the other side of all things.
The fights are simple, but fun, and choreographed really well. Knowing your inputs really makes them feel good.
The character progression is smart. There are no stupid 'skills' that you 'learn.' Your ablilities are naturally limited to your equipment, and your own ability to use it. Every time you progress, it is essential.
The only thing I wish there was, is a less bland world to explore, and a better implementation of the investigation missions.

Most of the reviews dont understand this game is dated and as such has simplistic form (modern gamers)
without much insight regarding the plot or theme these reviews are stupid
the game is repetitive but it has a good storyline and setup for the trilogy.
i have owned all the games and do have favourites and non favourites, this one isnt bad, and in some stance is less straight forward and easy.
if you want better controls there are tools for this. However i will say a remaster would be fantastic

Yeah, this game's not pretty, it's clunky, and it's extremely repetitive, but its mood and atmosphere is what keeps me playing it even in 2021.
If it's something I secretly hope for, is that the original game gets some sort of remake or reboot, as the Assassin's Creed series is in quite a bit of an identity crisis with itself as of late. If it's a title to start that with, it's this one.

Preface to the opinion
I first played this game back in 2008 and then it seemed to me not interesting. Not so long ago, on the recommendation of a blogger( SonnyK ), I decided to go through this game again and I did not regret it. Thank him for that.
[strike] This game has a great story, which in my childhood seemed difficult and incomprehensible to me... [/strike]
It became difficult for me to continue writing the review because I am a lazy person. But in 2 words Assasins creed 1 game excellent

Assassins's Creed Director's Cut is the PC version of Assassin's Creed 1 from console with some additional technical improvement and gameplay changes. Most notably the addition of enjoyable side quests and not the same repetitive/tedious four side quests from console is the biggest change removing most of the boring repetition I took issue with in the console game. After playing this 13-ish years later the game and main story still hold up really well and this game (as well as AC:2, Brotherhood, and Revelations) all deserve a playthrough on Steam!

The story contains many interesting elements, historical places, factions and figures. What halts the game substantially is the subplot of the Animus and Desmond. Frequently you get taken out of the experience to get exposition, and then be put back into the real meat of the game. The dissonance, while probably intentional, adds very little and in fact takes away from the experience.
The aforementioned factions and historical figures have potential to be more interesting and since they’re based on real people adds a lot of value to the overall story, but it again gets halted by the grand conspiracies that the series focuses on. Sometimes these conspiracies can even lead to historical inaccuracies that could even harm a viewer's understanding of the historical context behind this time period.
As for the gameplay the combat, while smooth, lacks variety and many times becomes a simple chore. The platforming and parkour is fun although the controls can sometimes be frustratingly unresponsive, something later games would improve.
As for the structure of AC1 you mainly complete Main Quests to further the story as well as optional side activities such as sidequests, flag collecting and killing stationed Templars. There are cases where 2-3 Side Quests need to be completed before you can proceed with the Main Quest. I’d recommend you only complete the bare minimum. The idea was that these quests would aid with strategic advice on how to tackle the Main Quest with for example optimal routes and locations that you could look at in the memory block. Sadly these are sorely needed and the most optimal solution is almost always clear as day and can be completed without the prior knowledge put forth by these activities. Instead they become timewasters rather than timesavers and there is no real reward or recognition for completing the game 100%. I’d be lying if I said there wasn’t a bit of fun to be had, but they were mere breadcrumbs in comparison to the major problems with the game.
What AC1 does best is it’s scenery and attention to detail with its environments. I’ll never be able to visit the beautiful city of Damascus since it is now almost completely destroyed. The entire series of Assassin’s Creed really shines when it comes to these places of historical importance, giving people an opportunity to explore historical places that have existed or still do exist. The games are good at helping people engage and become interested in real world history and geography.
In conclusion, the first Assassin’s Creed has come to represent the many aspects that has become commonplace in the plagued AAA video game industry.

Simultaneously, Desmond Miles have to navigate conspiracy and intrigue, in order to figure out who he can trust in the present day, while at the same time uncovering Altaïr's secrets through the use of the Animus. All the ingredients that would make the later games so successful are all here. Historical conspiracy, fascinating and complex historical characters, beautiful and historically accurate worlds, hauntingly atmospheric music and an interesting plot.
While the first instalment in the franchise stumbles a bit in the story department (assassinating nine individuals - repetitive much?), the atmosphere presented to you is hauntingly beautiful and definitely worth a visit if you missed it your first time around. It might not hold up quite as well as some of the later entries, but for us 'ol timers the nostalgia is hauntingly palpable. So if you're on the edge of jumping in, take a leap of faith!

The story missions are also very repetitive. You will have a target in each district of a city, and complete tasks to gain information on your target. Running and climbing may sometimes not go as you expect and can be frustrating, but when you get a flow going it is a lot of fun.
Unfortunately, the collectibles and Templar targets place through each city and the Kingdom have no benefit and are only for reaching 100% synchronization.. again not having any benefit beyond the satisfaction of doing so.
For the PC version I initially encountered a number of physics glitches such as clothing and flags unrealistically moving in the wind, rag doll bodies flying around upon death, haystacks that kill Altair in a Leap of Faith, as well as a hover animation whenever Altair went into a landing animation.
To resolve this I had to rename two files in the folder at the following path:
SteamLibrary > steamapps > common > Assassins Creed
These two files were ‘AssassinsCreed_Dx9.exe’ and ‘AssassinsCreed_Dx10.exe’. When renaming these files, I simply switched the ‘9’ and the ‘10’. According to some troubleshooting comments I read, the game will automatically load ‘AssassinsCreed_Dx9.exe’ so this was the recommended method to use 10 instead.
This is a game that may be hard to get into unless you are a fan of the series. I would recommend playing through this one if you intend to play the other games in the series. While it does not have a major impact in the series as a whole, it does introduce some aspects that you may miss out on if you skip it. This would be more noticeable in the Ezio collection.

General info
This game is OG for sure.
I played this when a was a kid had good memories playing it. Generally, the controls are not soo easy to master. Its an old game and doesn't have the guides we are used to seeing in new games out now.
So when there is a tutorial pay attention and look in settings what controls are what keys you will memorize it more while playing don't worry. If u have a problem with something you can't do like for an example in training don't give up try any combinations or look for tutorials online.
Beware is very very REPETITIVE u will get missions over an over. Some climbing is pretty annoying game won't do what u want to xd so don't let it get into your nerves try it once or twice if you cant do it. Don't worry try something else and come back to it later.
Overall:
I loved this games despite its flaws. The game is like u friend you have(if you have friends) that gets on your nerves and make you mad. But you will always come back and have fun with him.PICK ON SALE it's not worth the 9,99€. You get 35 hrs of gameplay if u do all sidequests and points of interest.
FLAGS:
I didn't colect all the flags or kill ale the crusaders. I don't think you get anything when collected. You get Just 100% synchronization which gives you more health but in my opinion. It's not worth it. I think the developers did it just for saves once u collect the flag or kill crusader you get a saved position.-Gameplay-

Well, despite all that the game is the introduction of a masterpiece franchise. In this game you play as Altair one of the coolest character you could play as! As you progress the character evolves from a very selfish arrogant character to a more understandable and reliable person. And the plot twist at the end will make you question what is trust and who are your true allies.
As a conclusion, the gameplay is very linear and repetitive but it's a must play if you want to get into the assassin s creed franchise. Anyway, thank you stranger for reading my review!

It's considered an old game now (revolutionary upon release) and yes, u might find it a bit clunky and repetitive; but with the most intriguing story, beautiful sceneries and heartwarming music, it has only aged well as a wine!

Played this after completing Black Flag, Origins and Odyssey, now working through the series from the start. 20 hours of this is more repetitive than 200 hours of Odyssey. AC has a dull palette, lacks interesting things to do, the story is drawn out and boring, there is too much combat and too little stealth. It has no difficulty settings, no subtitles, flat stereo sound that is muffled, and no quit option (alt-F4 is required). I did like how you can practice (learn) your combat moves in the practice ring each time you receive new ones.
Overall it's still an ok semi-open world that is interesting, if only to see where the AC series began.

My Rating
5/10
Positives
+ Good story (based on the prince of persia)
+ Nice character design
+ Quick-travel is available as the explorable areas increase
+ smooth combat with impressive combos
Negatives
- The game crashes when I try to start it
- No achievements
- Unfriendly and lackluster UI (no subtitles either)
- Extremely tedious finding all the collectibles
- A handful of repeatable mini-games/races across rooftops
Comment
A somewhat crude and at times clunky introduction to the series. But I really liked it. Why? Well the story is okay, but the assassinations, THOSE take the cake. Not all are equally good but all felt satisfying. The combat is fun as well although having to battle guards over and over can get repetitive after a while. The later ugrades that Altair gets make the combat even better. Falling into water kills you in this game which is rather immersion breaking (why would a trained assassin not be able to swim?) but not game breaking. The horse riding is cool although sometimes the horses handle poorly. Many people do not like the Desmond timeline but I do, it adds flavour to the story. Overall a cool game that has some bugs and boring/annoying parts which get mostly negated by the smooth combat and assassination system. Recommended!

Assassin's Creed™: Director's Cut Edition
This game doesn't get an intro, nor any review points. Only games that work get those things
The first of the Assassin's Creed games. This game was actually very fun and original, when it was first released. The even more important point was that the game actually worked when it was first released.
It is extremely broken now. It is impossible to play essentially. I don't know where or when it happened, but porting this game onto a new computer and/or system broke it. There are massive, game-breaking issues.
Leaps of faith no longer work. If you leap from a sync tower, you will do a leap of faith, but when you reach the hay wagon, you will land on its hitbox instead, immediately making you die. This happens in story missions as well, so you are unable to progress past that point.
In combat, you might get hit or countered and clip into the map. Altair will become stuck in the ground, or fling across Jerusalem at Mach 5. You can also get hit and fling through terrain, trapping you in the void under the map.
The original Assassin's creed was amazing. This is a broken shell of what it once was. Do not buy it.

Assassin's Creed is a classic.
Also it's worth to mention that I don't dislike the current movement of Assassin's Creed as a franchise and find most of the negatives to be poorly exaggerated. While I do wish developers would not put out AC games every year and focus on making a more refined and impressive game, they remain one of the very few games that let us venture into these ancient worlds.

This game is one of my favourite games so far.
For those who are new to it. This game is a dull game.
Cause you only assassinate people. Taking flags. Syrian assassin with English accent.
Thats negative side. But on positive side.
You're getting huge map. With almost open world trough the map and 4 cities to discover trough 12th century.
Masyaf, Acre, Jerusalem and Damascus.
This game for me does have a special place.
It is my first game that I actually spent tons of time climbing on highest towers and having fun
For someone it will be a terrible game.
For myself it has a special place.

Combat and climbing are still fun, even if not as smooth as most modern games, it's something you can get used to quite easily if you just give it some time.
If you're not so much into old games though, I'd recommend the newer AC games.

The game still looks decent for a game released way back in 2007-08, albeit showing its age in a number of areas. The cities themselves are wonderfully crafted and is a joy exploring on the ground or on high across the rooftops with the series' famous parkour free-running. The present day story, often dismissed as an unnecessary distraction, is in my opinion the driving force for the series. I liked the main character, Desmond Miles, as he is forced by the evil Abstergo corporation to use the Animus to relive the memories of his ancestor centuries ago. That ancestor is Altair, an Assassin operating in the Holy Land at the height of the Third Crusade. Altair starts the game as an unlikable arrogant douche bag but grows into a compassionate man as the game goes on. This premise involving the Animus back when it released was something truly unique, and I remember being enamored with the game. However, the ten years since then have not been kind to it.
This game is repetitive. I said it. The Assassin's Creed series is infamous for its use of collectables and filler content to compliment its story so this might not sound so strange but unfortunately it is in the story and main missions that it suffers this. The story consists of hunting down and assassinating nine targets to regain your lost status from the beginning of Altiar's story. Each assassination consists of going to each city, one of Jerusalem, Damascus or Acre, speaking to the bureau leader and doing the same three or four activities to learn about the target and assassinate them.
And remember...nothing is true; everything is permitted.

I'll save you the long part and say the following: If you watched BBC history documentaries as a kid and liked them, you'll love this game. If you didn't, go play AC2.
1.) This game hits atmosphere on the head. Sure, it's mechanically clonky- but to hell with that. I've never found a more satisfying title about the third crusade. The Assassin order in this installment, while certainly fictionalized, maintains a specific eerie, occult vibe that is sorely missed in later installments. Much of the game revolves around when and when not to question authority, the effects of doing either at the wrong time, and the moral dilemma of killing for the greater good. It's heavily inspired by historical accounts of the actual Hashashin order. This is the only game in the series where the assassin cult actually feels like an assassin cult.
2.) This game is an absolute gem of alternative historical fiction. Your missions are closely linked to real world disappearances from the time of the third crusade. Look up any of Altair's targets after playing through this title. The connections to real world disappearances and their political effects on the third crusade are delicately woven into the story in a seemless way which is unseen in future titles. You might actually believe the events of this game happened. It does wonders for immersion.
3.) The character of Altair is inconspicuous and subtle. Dull to some, but dynamic if you take the time to read between the lines. He is not a pretty, swashbuckling vagabond and that should not discourage you from enjoying this title. He is a cold, quiet, calculated hunter here to do business- and more importantly, a quiet vessel through which you will sample a series of historically inspired political conspiracies and moral dilemmas. Initially arrogant and reckless, Altair goes through a number of deep, philosophical changes in this story which are expressed through his own reflections on the moral dilemma presented by his work. Your experience will depend very much on your interest in this dilemma.
This game relies very little on pure drama, which makes many sequences far more believable in my opinion. This is really more of a psychological thriller with the addition of climby-stabby mechanics than an action title, and I think it's brilliant.
This game is about the big picture.
This all may be a turn off for a lot of fans who are used to the more bombastic, Hollywoodian characters and sequences of later titles, but if you've got a mind for history, philosophy or politics, like a more grounded story, and can be bothered to be intrigued - you'll enjoy navigating the questions of this world with Altair.

Controls are weird, at best. The story is good but ends with a cliff hanger, so if you buy AC1, buy AC2 as well. The game becomes repetitive after a while but the story makes you forget that you are doing the same missions over and over again. Recommended for any Assassin's Creed fan.

The parkour mechanics in this game, compared to later titles, feel more realistic since you cannot just hold a button to climb walls and jump vertically from one ledge to another like a superhero. Altaïr's movements are precise and slow and you actually have to take the effort to look for the next ledge and use directional keys in order to grab or jump on them.
The music and the plot of the game, in my opinion, are the best parts about it. They compliment each other in a way that you find yourself absorbed in the atmosphere of the first crusade. The setting is so well-portrayed that you can feel the societal and cultural differences between Acre, Damascus and Jerusalem which are the three main areas of the game. The story, although heavily fused with fiction, is fundamentally based on historical events and figures. Altaïr's character as the main protagonist is very well done; his journey of redemption is full of turns and twists and has an overall enigmatic feel to it.
When you are on your pursuit to assassinate each target, you gather information about their motives and crimes which gives you a general idea about their characters and makes you even more invested in the story. Although the side missions could get a bit repetitive, it wouldn't hurt to pay attention to the cutscenes for once since the dialogues that are exchanged are specific to each quest and essential to the story, hence why they are unskippable.
Although you acquire new weapons and abilities after killing each target, the combat could get a little repetitive in the final stages of the game, but i personally took no issue with it. Another downside of the game is the sound quality specially that of the NPCs; yet again the game is from 2008 so expectations should be adjusted accordingly. Overall playing this game would be a nice and different experience, specially if you have only played the newer and totally different grindfest RPG wannabe ACs, in order to see how it all began and how the franchise has (d)evolved. And finally remember:
I'll have your hands for that

The gameplay is very basic - you progress through the story by assassinating the targets that were given to you by the grandmaster of the assassins.
Each target's city got an information collecting phase where you do minigames that can be located on the map by climbing towers (the first time Ubisoft have used this concept and since then it's infected every game made by them afterword).
There are also optional objectives (The additional memories) where you find collectibles in each area - flags and killing Templars and they are pointless since you don’t get anything for finding them.
If you are a completionist then this game can be very tedious since many of the minigames repeat themselves in every chapter and there are a lot in I mean A LOT of collectibles to find.
My recommendation is to do only the bare minimum to progress the story since this is the main attraction and its got a really good story.

In terms of performance, this game still looks great and runs incredibly well, especially given its age. Having been prompted to replay the other early games in the series recently on PC, it might be fair to say that this game actually looks better than Assassin's Creed II. That might depend on your hardware of course, but I was able to run both on max settings without any issues, and I honestly think this game might look better. The game did crash on me twice, however. These instances happened randomly while I was just running around, so not really a huge issue, but something worth noting.
The gameplay itself has also aged well. While freerunning and combat obviously has improved in later games, it still holds up. Naturally the age difference can feel a little clunky at first, but once you start playing you'll adjust to it just fine. The game also works perfectly well with a controller, provided you go into the settings and map out all of the buttons.
I would definitely recommend Assassin's Creed under any circumstance. Whether you're revisiting it like me, whether you've played other AC games but not this one, or whether you've never played any AC games. And that's even more true now because it's cheap.
