Full review:
I have played and 100% finished every single AC game so far from the original AC to Odyssey (even including every single DLC and the PSP exclusive Bloodlines) and while they are mostly not overly great games, they are overall enjoyable and offer some fun gameplay. I even played the first two Chronicles games (starting with India, then China) and found them to be quite enjoyable as well, even though they cleary looked a lot better than they played.
But this one? I just can't do this. Mind you, as a Dark Souls cultist I like a challenge here and there and I also don't have a big problem with reloading saves in stealth games as I love the Hitman and Splinter Cell series. But this game is just too much. I have spent 2 hours on the second mission and came in with a clearing time of 17:32. This means that I spent about 85% of my time retrying the same parts over and over again until i finally was able to do them in the one frame perfect way the devs apparently expected me to do this.
Don't get me wrong, a bit of trial and error is fine but this seems like it has never even been playtested beforehand. I can also live with following pretty strict guidelines to achieve some special ranking or unlock bonus stuff. But needing to do everything in an oddly specific way that can only be figured out via repeated (!) trial and error just to beat the regular main game? No, thank you.

Was mich hier stört, wie auch in den andern Teilen, ist folgendes:
Trial and Error an fast jeder Stelle im Spiel.

This game has so many scripted missions you won't be feeling like you are the who's in control! So many Missions are scripted and not just the missions but in-mission activities are too scripted! I've no idea what the developer had in mind while making this game but it's unbearable and unplayable for me! I somehow finished it but not proud a single bit. This game made me furious and now I really can't play any video game 'cause I've fed up! This game literally destroyed my enjoy to play games. Game tries to make you forget all the mistakes it has with that artstyle and shady graphics. But that does not work on you if you pay good attention of what your playing!
Chronicles China was better than this game! Chronicles Russia doesn't let you make your own way with your own playstyle in the levels! There are certain ways to pass that level and you cannot do otherwise. Thats why I am calling this game SCRIPTED!!! There is a reason to it. As an DieHard Assassin's Creed fan this game does not exist for me! I only bought this game 'cause I'm trying to build an Assassin's Creed Collection. This game does not deserve any love that someone might give!

Huge parts of it are not the stealth assassin creed you may be looking for. The stages that simply run, jump at the right times are the worst, I have to jump at the right time while the character and platform are obscured by an explosion! Great game play mechanic.
We got introduced to killing machine gunners during their reload times. The next time we face one, we cannot kill him and have to open a door in a fashion we haven't been introduced to before.
Game designer failed hugely in this game and nobody outside the people who knew the game mechanics of each level played it in QA/Testing.
Never buy full price.

Once I did sort through the technical issues I found an interesting concept for a game but something I just don't think fits with Assassin's Creed. There are legitimately some really interesting stealth/sneak missions in this game but it is constantly riddled with more (and less interesting) missions where you run away from something chasing you. I honestly don't understand the logic for some of the decision making for this game and because of that I would not recommend this game unless you are a massive Assassin's Creed fan looking to play every game in the series.

I didn't enjoy the previous two games much.
They both had very bad input recognization.
And they both had simply 'horrible' controls.
It was also almost impossible to rebind them.
Did they fix these issues with Rusia? Well, no.
Of course they didn't fix them, It's the same.
The previous two at least have great visuals.
Russia looks unique too, but not that much.
In comparison to the India, It's a step down.
The story also just feels a bit less interesting.
It's still a good story, but it just feels weaker.
Russia seems to be the 'worst' of the trilogy.
It's actually quite tedious to play through it.
This is mostly just about the perfect timing.
Stealth does not matter, because time does.
You timed something wrong? Restart again.
And again and again. Simply rage inducing.
This sadly doesn't feel like Assassin’s Creed.
It feels like worse 'Mark of the Ninja' clone.
Playing this game just truly isn't enjoyable.
I got through it only because of the story.
But I absolutely hated the ugly gameplay.

On the other hand, the game is stupidly hard. Not hard as in difficult, but hard in an unnecessarily way. Most of the final chapters are played like timed button events where you need to move at an exact moment in order to avoid failure.

But there are way too many places in the game where you have to do, not split second, but split tenth of a second actions, or you die.
You will find yourself failing and repeating again and again, and you will curse so much (I did) ...
Out of the 3 chronicles games, India is the best, China is ok, and this one avoid.

+ The story is alright
+ The soviet-propoganda-poster-like look and feel is really fitting and pretty, 10/10 for the idea behind the graphics
+ The music is great
Cons:
- The controls are terrible without an adequate way to rebind them. I think I'm left-handed now.
- The graphics, although pretty, are very cheaply made. It seems, like the city in the first level only has bakeries and police stations
- The game is unnecessarily stupidly hard. Hard for the sake of it being hard. Combine it with the terrible controls which are slow to respond, and you've got yourself a trigger fest of a game
- The game had some bugs, like spawning an extra guard in your way right at the end of a stealth level. I had to replay some levels multiple times
Thanks, i hate it.

Understandably shunned by most mainstream fans of the series for being so radically different yet nevertheless fully within Ubisoft's wheelhouse, the games are a departure from the open-world RPG style assassin's creed games and a return to Ubisoft's roots in the prince of Persia games.
Chronicles feature 2.5D mostly linear levels, testing the player in tight counter-combat, and stealth tactics.
The trilogy concludes with Russia... and oh boy this one is tough...
The story to Russia is the most fleshed out of the three, both main characters feel fairly lifelike and the plot isn't half bad, I never played these for the story, given these games are side-stories within a larger AAA franchise I was never expecting much; but nonetheless Russia does deliver. The world and gameplay within all have a strong oppressive feeling to them which goes really well with the plot, you're on the run, everyone has betrayed you, the whole game is a mad dash to escape Russia as everything goes to hell. Both characters must find strength they didn't know they had to escape the night.
Visually this is the most striking of the three titles, the stark posterization is reminiscent of sin city and historic Russian propaganda. There's no mistaking the grey world for lazy design here, it really does look incredible, there are a small handful of repeated areas but you won't notice it at all until the final section, this game really looks gorgeous.
Finally we have to talk about the gameplay... this is where things get a bit unfortunate, Russia feels rushed to say the least. There are a handful of really great new ideas but there barely used since in this installment you spend almost the entire game getting railroaded from one linear section to the next. There's a grand total of three sections that honestly let you make choices, everywhere else you get one option and it almost always feels like the brute force way.
The problem here is Anastasia, while she is an interesting character, they made the choice of separating tools and helix with Anastasia getting the latter of the two.
Every one of her segments with the exception of the sniper escape level, feels claustrophobic.
You get one, insanely demanding path through all her levels, and it's always at least a little painful.
I've defended to the hilt that the deaths in the past two games are almost never cheap, I cannot defend this on however, many deaths really are. Far too many times you fail for reasons you cannot possibly predict or prepare for.
When you're not being railroaded (literally at several points) from timed levels, chase segments, or those unforgivable broken machine gun escapes; it's either obnoxiously tight stealth segments where you aren't even allowed to be spotted, or searchlight spam.
The few segments that do give you genuine agency are incredible, and despite how frustrating this game can be, it is all the more rewarding to beat; at least until the last mission which is a fucking joke.
it's a shame because there's a lot to like here, but just as much (if not more) to be disappointed by.
Orelov's kit is really clever, they've tied everything into his sniper and included a good deal more of those sniper sections to boot, not the most interesting stuff in the world but not offensive either, and it feels cohesive so I did ultimately enjoy it all.
This is the most recent setting of any AC game so it feels appropriate to have an emphasis on guns, and it's done in a way that makes thematic sense for the assassin/templar conflict.
The emphasis on air ducts, better use of the 3d with multi-plane infiltration, and electricity allowing you to completely turn an indoor environment to your advantage; are all great additions. I just wish the game spent more time focusing on these sections, and far less on the chases, and timed crap.
Finally I have to acknowledge bugs, there are plenty in this one.
I recall virtually zero bugs in the past two titles so it's pretty baffling how common they were in this one. I found orelov's position slowly shifting inside of cover with each takedown during the train segment, likely because the train is genuinely moving (or at least some feature is included to make things like smoke move along the outside).
I also found the detection on boundaries fairly unreliable, and worst of all: enemies would frequently turn around within their pathing in seemingly unintended ways resulting in some sections being near impossible for a shadow gold run.
By the end I still did manage to complete the game on shadow gold so it does basically function, just not as smoothly as the first two installments did which is a damn shame.
On the whole Russia is the hardest to like of the three, as someone who truly enjoyed the concept of Chronicles I still found plenty to enjoy, but I'll admit I was far more frustrated than I'd ever allow myself to be with any other game of this length.
It was too short to be this inconsistent.
I can't know for sure without a good deal of research but I get the feeling this installment was rushed out, the big open ended sections of India almost certainly took more time and effort than the linear levels in Russia. There's less to design and test if you only program one solution, and less to animate if you keep locations tight. The literal train segments almost certainly saved a lot of time and effort. I don't want to believe laziness or an unreasonable deadline made this game what it is, but I find it hard to come up with a better reason for it.
So why, given all its faults, do I still recommend this game?
Truth be told I just really do love that core concept, and by the end I still do feel like I had fun despite everything. I enjoyed Chronicles as a trilogy for all its highs and lows, and feel that if you enjoy any part of chronicles you can and should enjoy all of it.
If for no other reason, I recommend this game because I think you should support this kind of game design, it's different, and worthwhile.
TLDR:
Russia is the weakest of the trilogy, but if you liked the other two, definitely still give it a try.

Don't pay full price for this. I would say wait for a good sale and then have fun. It is decently enjoyable and that is why we play games anyway.

Information / Review English
Assassin's Creed Chronicles: Russia is an Action-Adventure game developed by Climax Studios.
Gameplay / Story
The brotherhood of the Assassins is as old as time itself and the fight against the eternal arch-enemies, the Templars, already extends through epochs and religions for hundreds of years. The Assassin's Creed Chronicles Trilogy gives the player a deeper insight into this ongoing conflict between the two secret societies. In each of the three included games China, India and Russia, the player ends up in a different culture and a different century.
This game is set in Russia and covers the aftermath of the October Revolution in 1917. The story revolves around the protagonist Nikolai Orelov and is based on the comic book Assassin's Creed: Subject Four.
Pro
+ feels like Assassin's Creed even in 2D
+ two playable characters
+ narrative arc closes
+ good music, matching Indian language
+ very varied throughout
+ Mixture of sneak and action sequences
+ fair and yet demanding
+ Trading cards
Contra
- The potential of the new mechanics is not exhausted
- Characters without depth
Conclusion
Assassin's Creed Chronicles: Russia brings good new game mechanics with it, but they haven't been implemented well and have reached their full potential. So there is only one solid game left of everything.
Information / Review Deutsch
+ zwei spielbare Figuren
+ erzählerischer Bogen schließt sich
+ gelungene Musik, passende indische Sprache
+ durchwegs sehr abwechslungsreich
+ Mischung aus Schleich- und Actionsequenzen
+ fair und trotzdem fordernd
+ Sammelkarten
Kontra
- Potenzial der neuen Mechaniken wird nicht ausgeschöpft
- Charaktere ohne Tiefe
Fazit

This could have been good, but it isn't...
This story would have deserved its on normal 3D AC story line, but it haven't got it.
Game mechanics are crap, this 2,5D monster has many times a one dimensional solution for getting through, the level and it eats the RAM like crazy...
It need you to install the ubisoft client and log in aswell....

Besides all of that mess, the game is far from anything extraordinary. The background art and the music are nice, but the gameplay is nothing exciting and the story only varies in different tastes of cheesiness. It’s also rather short, somewhere between five and ten hours depending on the player.
So, in conclusion, you should only pick this game up if you buy it in sale, plan on playing it with a controller and really need to play every single game of the Assassin’s Creed franchise.

I will say this: If you end up playing this game, use a gamepad. I'm almost always keyboard/mouse for everything, but the controls were so awkward on the keyboard. When I switched over to a controller, the game actually felt playable. Can't say why, just my recommendation.

The Protagonist also felt good, character development was good, story kept me interesting throughout the game and I enjoyed this game more than the previous ones. Do check this game out if you want to know what happened to
Shay Cormac
because there is a secret ending that reveal something about him.
9.5 out of 10 Highly Recommended

+Offer a challenge rarely found in the Assassin creed franchise
-Clunky Controls
-Unforgiving Level design
-Infuriating timed stealth sections
-Splits your skills between two characters
-Hides upgrades behind a score multiplier
Overview: Assassin Creed chronicle: Russia is a poor end to the Chronicles series for assassin creed. The levels are set up rather infuriating and is not unforgiving enough. It is not helped that are too many times it times you to stealth through a level and if your caught you have to reset. This is not helped that your skillset unlike previous games is split between two different characters limiting the moves you can possible do for each run. This further not helped that all upgrades are hidden behind a score multiplier which means you practically need a perfect run to gain access to skills which would make the game easier to play. The end result makes the game a rather infuriating game to finish.
