I sunk a lot of my life playing this game.
The editor let me create missions that I spent weeks of my life making only to play on by myself or maybe a friend or two at max.
DayZ came out and the game blew up in popularity. The mod is still to this day better than the standalone game that came after it. Some of, if not my best gaming moments came from the DayZ mod. The constant fear of other players taking the hours of your life that you and your friends spent hunting for gear. It was every thing brutal about Armas over serious shooting mechanics mixed with zombies and human being devolving to their worst. I saw the normalcy go from teaming up to shooting on sight. The only players that were nice to you were the ones conning you into turning your back on them. I teamed up and built bases and flew helicopters full of supplies over all the chaos. I will always talk about the adventures I had in that mod.
Shout out to the Billy Mays server. F.
After that I played in the Arma 2 RP community for more time than I can imagine. I like to think what we did there inspired a lot of the RP communities you saw in Arma 3 and than into GTA5 and other games. We turned cops and robbers into way more and I would never laugh harder at any other game over the stupid situations that always over escalated out of everyone's hands.
Great game, even better memories. Support the series but there is nothing it can offer you that the new game can't

All together, dlc, campaigns, scenarios, etc. doesnt take to much time to finish but OA is a lot of fun, a little to short but its worth it.
Vanilla 2 is fun, good campaign but annoying. All the other campaigns are shorter than you would imagine but are different from each other so if you want to play online with everything or try them at Armory then go for it.
Arma 3 is better in almost every aspect except how much content it has.
Arma 2 and AO had a lot more content but Armaholic is dead so is hard to find mods, scenarios, etc.
Good game with every dlc, worth buying if discounted, you have arma 3 as a better alternative.

The Narrative
There isn’t a story per se, but multiple operations that take place in Chernarus and Takistan. You’ll be in charge of a squadron of men or an elite unit during night operations. You’ll also be leading the cavalry across the deserts and the helicopters in the skies. Each operation is well detailed on what needs to be done. They’ll explain who the enemy is, where the enemy may potentially be placed at, what you’ll be doing, and what needs to be done in order to achieve victory.
There will also be dialogues between soldiers, HQ/FoB and all other parties involved throughout each operation – making the missions feel life-like and making you feel as if you were a lieutenant in charge of his squad. The additional dialogue about enemy movements, soldiers being injured, and giving orders to your fellow soldiers only adds to the narrative.
The Gameplay
The tutorial well help understand the fundamental aspects, such as movement controls, giving orders to units, how to fire weapons, and a multitude of other options that most first-person shooters can only dream of. You’ll understand the concepts of stealth, urban warfare, and traditional warfare in open fields with an array of armaments. The weather and day/night cycles can either hinder or give the advantage during combat. The gameplay is complex and challenging onto itself because there is so much to learn. This isn’t a game that you can learn everything within one day; it'll take some time to understand the basics.
You can choose to be in first-person or in third-person view – depending on the scenario. Some missions prevent you from going into third-person in order to experience the game in an immersive environment. The problem with third-person view is you can see someone around the wall or hiding behind the corner even though you should not be able to see them (I can understand why certain missions disabled this feature).
You'll have to look at the map and find opportunities to attacks, flanking maneuvers, ambushes; commanding fellow soldiers to attack at specific times in order to engage the enemy with minimal loses, and even go door-to-door breaches where killing a civilian can end the mission.
The gameplay also requires patience and a desire to learn the abundance of menus that this game offers. Personally, I still don’t have a clue what half of them do, but those who have mastered the game are a force to be reckoned with. You will also require some perseverance as this game is unrewarding to those who charge into battle headstrong.
The Content
You’ll have an arsenal of weapons and vehicles at your disposal – or what is allowed during said scenarios. The guns are based off those of multiple companies throughout the world; guns that are used by the U.S. Military and fellow NATO alliance members. These also include vehicles used by the U.S. Military – either mentioned by aviation, cavalry, and maritime means. You’ll also witness multiple arsenal variants from the Eastern European nations.
You’ll have an array of equipment to help you along your operations. These will include maps, ammo, med-kits; a large array of explosive weaponry (e.g. standard grenades, rocket launchers, javelins, etc.), and other forms of equipment (e.g. flash/smoke grenades, binoculars, body armor, etc.). You’ll experience a lot of the arsenal while manning your guns on the ground, flying in the air, or driving multiple vehicles on your operations.
You’ll see fictional lands that resemble areas like Eastern Europe or the deserts of the Middle East. You’ll engage in moments when the day gradually shifts into night and it happens right in front of your eyes or when the weather kicks in to lessen your visibility. There will also be devices such as thermal, infrared, and night vision. This game has a lot to offer in terms of military content, their specifications, factions, detailed mission logs, and anything else to add to make the game as real as possible.
The purpose of this content is to make you feel like you’re actually in combat, without actually leaving the comfort of your chair. Is it perfect? No, but there is no reload in real life either. I know a few veterans who have played this game (one being my father) and they say the game covers a lot of the realism, but it will never compete with actual realistic warfare. If you want true realism, then join the armed forces. For those of you that have served, I thank you for your service.
The Auditory
Having fired off handguns in the past, the sounds of the weapons and the vehicles shooting at their targets are amazing for being dated at 2010. Honestly, that isn't a bad aspect since a lot of modern shooters sound like paintball guns. The sounds are crisp, delightful, and impactful. You hear that whistling sound? Hide because that’s a mortar.
Even the voice actors put some military spirit when acting out their roles. You can hear the stern voice of a commander to an inexperienced private saying, “Yes, Sir!” It helps portray that realism in the game to show that everyone is different and some may even be nervous or stern as an ox without a care that a bullet almost hit them.
The Visual Design
The graphics are outdated and didn’t really age well with time. The main purpose of the game is to be realistic and not be in the spotlight for having some of the best visual designs on the planet. Some may criticize the game for its lack of visual appeal, such as lighting effects, shadows, and even the assets used to formulate a rendered object. Yet, the game still offers a charming appearance:
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2446042104
At times the graphics will look rather dry – such as a helicopter blowing up and then immediately being burnt to a crisp. Again, this game is about simulation, not benchmark graphic design. I rather enjoyed the graphics despite being slightly outdated, and enjoyed the visual design regardless.
The Performance and Functionality
When controlling your soldiers (platoon/cavalry) sometimes their AI acts incredibly stupid. You’ll have to repeat the commands several times in order for them to behave the way you want and act accordingly to your strategic maneuvers. The pathfinding can also become a problematic element as your unit members will get stuck in buildings, behind rocks and trees (mainly vehicles), or try to go uphill knowing logically they cannot. Even if you set up the waypoints for them to walk/drive in that particular order, they still find a way to become a headache.
The game also displays some severe performance issues. Such issues pertain to loss of frame rates, long loading times, and graphical glitches that the AI can perform (e.g. walking though walls). On average I would get around 57 FPS. There are also bugs throughout some of the missions that will make you reload your last checkpoint or have you redo the entire mission again. My issue pertains to the game somehow corrupting itself and deleting my saved files.
The Technical Specifications
OS: Windows 7
CPU: i7-4790k
GPU: GeForce GTX 1080
Ram: 16GB
The Verdict
Between the realism and immersion that I felt while playing this game, I enjoyed it for the most part. The complex controls were off-putting till I got used to them, and then I understood how to proceed better with the missions later on. Yes, there are bugs and they can be frustrating – especially if you have to restart a mission, but for the most part, I had an overall enjoyable experience with the game.

My bread & butter. The game that got me into Pc gaming.
If I never grabbed the Arma franchise off Steam over 6 years ago, when I had seen DayZ Mod, I'd probably still be on a console right now.
I remember slowly crawling through the cold forests behind Balota airfield with a dude that called himself CruztyNipples.
We were scared shitless, as infected roamed the areas around us. I had my M16 trained on the top floor of a fire station. Whatever peeked that window would get a taste of 5.56!
i felt somewhat bad ass assuming I had the upper advantage, until a UH-1H flew over our heads and a door gunner started shooting at one of the hangars.
I ran for cover & crawled under a Land Rover.
I managed to survive the heli, only to fall down a staircase in that same firestation & fracture my legs.
10/10 the greatest game out there. Out of EVER game in library, the hundreds of hours on several games, this is by far, the most memorable game I own.

Memories. Way too many memories about being a helicopter jockey, first in A2, then in OA.
DayZ killed it. The community is gone best I can tell. I'm left sifting through the ambers half-sobbing, remembering how circa 2013 I saw files on dev-heaven for Insurgency mission on every goddamn custom island ever made, and realizing how those missions, those and many others, are now gone, their creators having last logged on at best in 2016 and probably long since having moved on from Arma.
But some files remain.
Get a few friends.
Go to armaholic.
Get Domination for Chernarus and Takistan.
Get Insurgency files from here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/176DpJq0FQeAWoSZ3xrQC0J_OYIiuyjk_/view?usp=drivesdk
Then maybe, just maybe if there's enough of you, maybe if you could get a veteran or two to help, or maybe if you're willing to fight through all the jank and stiffness of controls, once more, for one last time...
For auld lang syne.

Unbanned without explanation on April 2, 2020, after writing over a dozen e-mails and tickets to BattlEye Innovations e.K., Bohemia Interactive, Steam Support, and Valve Corporation. No guarantee that they won't ban me again for the same unknown reason if reinstalling BattlEye and allowing it to connect to the Internet. In practice thus still BattlEye global banned.
