The game play was fun - the weapon feel good and the reloading mechanic, eventhough is a bit too simple and easy, felt really badass especially with a colt.
It is a bit short at least the campaign - i mean i am a casual VR Player and played through it in a little over 3 hours.
Never played the horde mode - i am not into that at all. but the story was ok.
a quite pricey game when you only play through the campaign - and TBH it felt pretty weird with the bad acting and the weird reloading (reloading is ejecting the mag and pulling the gun to you belly. no button pressing nothing. ) Yes you feel badass a few times, but all in all i didn`t like the experience.
Sorry :(
oh i just realized there are DLCs. Once it played through them i let you know more.
But i am not optimistic ill play through them in a while.

and continuesly looking makes me feel weird, that's why i dont use it in VRChat either, i use snap turning, and it works on every other VR game perfectly, but this game doesnt have the option.
Settings besides, i tried Story, cringe at the questionable voice acting, and 2 minutes in, im already completly lost because the ingame equipment/inventory is completly confusing, and had no idea how to reload my pistol, couldn't find any magazine either, so i quit the Story 3 minutes in, great.
After being confused and frustrated, i tried Horde mode, just kill some Zombies, that can't be bad right??
holstering guns and just holding them, everything just feels.. off.. any other game like Boneworks absolutely whips the floor with this game, its really awkward to use guns.
so i see 2 zombies, empty my mags on em, and uh oh. don't know how to reload the guns, there's no ammo bag on my hips or anything like in any other VR game, So i had no idea how to reload my gun, gave up and died.
You have a far better experience with zombie map's in Pavlov VR.
i'm sorry but i will never try this game again.

I should of refunded this game, but I kept giving it the benefit of the doubt.
Reasons:
1.The game is laggy/stuttery. I tried lots of ways to make the game play smooth, tolerable (no luck).
2.Every 15 to 20 minutes of playing I had to stop because I felt dizzy and like I was going to puke from the locomotion movements.
3.The game is outdated and needs improvements.
Maybe this game was impressive in VR back then, but it needs updating/fixing (which probably will never happen).
Seems like the majority of reviews enjoyed the game for what it is.
If you never played it before and decide to purchase and start experiencing issues with the game play within the 3 hours of owning, don't make my mistake by keeping it, just get a refund.

If You play this on a PC with a Oculus Quest, Expect some Movement bollocks. More experienced VR players know two main movement options: Teleportation (Point to where you want to go, and instantly teleport there) and smooth locomotion (Similar to a controller-controlled game; Push the stick and the character goes in that direction). But in this game, BOTH of these control schemes DON'T work as intended. 45 minutes into my playtrough, I Came to a place where you fight a horde of zombies. Being a zombie game, they will attempt to surround you. If You use the 'Teleportation' movement option, and you get surrounded, just give up, as even if there is a gap between, you cannot escape and you will die soon after. If You Use the 'Smooth locomotion' Movement option, You can escape from the surrounding horde, but now you will get stuck on Basic. Level. Geometry. If You say: 'Well, it isn't such a problem, just go to the in-game settings and fix it' Then you discover that to even change the movement options (or volume, for that matter) you need to escape from the current session, and change them in the main menu. Even on a SSD, That can take minutes (and usually will throw you at the last checkpoint; resetting anything that you wanted to change the options for). After 90 minutes, I Gave up and refunded the game. Shame.
TL;DR - You cannot escape if you get surrounded if you move via Teleportation and get stuck on things if you use smooth locomotion. If you want to change that, you need to exit and change in the main menu, wasting time and placing you before you wanted to change settings. Lasted 90 minutes, dissapointed, Refunded.

The game is really buggy and kinda short.
It's hard to move around sometimes and the hands glitch and won't let you pick up stuff.
(You can somewhat fix the grab issues on the Index by messing with the SteamVR binding settings.)
But it was really fun to dual-wield guns, and the main character's got some corny dialogue that I found a little funny.
30 hours in, just beat Apocalyptic mode. I would say this is the true way to play the game.
You are as fragile as a toothpick, zombies will kill you instantly, there are barely any checkpoints, you have limited ammo and you're stuck with one gun through it all.
I felt anxious whenever I heard a zombie screech and the hordes were terrifying to fight through. I had to count my shots out loud to remember when to reload, check my surroundings, and get headshots to not waste ammo. The cave part sucks, as if the caves weren't scary enough...

i don't get motion sick, or any kind of sick in VR, but this game made me feel physically sick after playing, like i genuinely needed to throw up.
i'm sad i somehow played for more than 2 hours, but most of it was just spending too long on maps where nothing was happening, because surely it can't be that bad, right? surely one of these maps has to be interesting and challenging enough, but no.
every zombie just slowly walks towards your position from preset spawns and the waves never got any more intense, just slightly more copy paste mindless ai, to the point where we didn't even notice waves were passing.
the guns weren't interesting at all either, i even noticed the M4 in the game is set to safe, yet somehow still fires. and that's such a boring detail because nothing else about the guns is interesting, they're just copy paste mechanics with different sights and the same firing noise.
i hope i can still get a refund somehow, i don't think i'll ever play this again.

For co-op the game music, and the guy's cheesy voice clips are WAY too loud, and higher than the players by default. Which like i said before , you can't change while in game.
I brought this on massive sale.. but For $30? No .

The story is basically just some guy narrating what you are doing or have done and pointing you in some sort of direction. For me it's just a very loud uninteresting voice that I would very much prefer to turn off and just have a zombie head point me in the direction. You'll notice he says Fred a lot, and I mean a lot, I've played 0.4 hours and I'm already sick of the name.
Interactivity. The only things you can seem to interact with is food, ammo, guns, and some doors. Trying to pick stuff up is annoying, especially when it's directly underneath you, when you crouch down to grab it just picks up one of your guns that are holstered or you're not grabbing directly on the item. Reloading is completely stupid in my opinion, the Devs added the ability to press a button to drop a mag out of a pistol, but you can't grab a mag and manually reload the gun, you have to drop the mag and bring the gun to the ammo counters on your chest to reload it instantly, sure it's good when there's a horde of zombies in front of you, but takes away from the horror and action genre as you can just hold the gun near your chest, drop mag and be instantly reloaded, adds more intensity if you manually reload as you have to be quick before zombies kill you. Movement is alright, but rotating with the controller is just bad if you are near something you can collide with, basically if you are right against a solid wall and start rotating, you will somehow clip through the wall and get stuck, and it'll glitch out to a point where it won't let you move or turn with the controllers and slowly your vision will go black. Holding the guns themselves is awkward. I've played Pavlov and H3VR (Hotdogs Horseshoes & Hand grenades) which have possibly the best gun physics out there in VR games, and the guns line up with the controllers perfectly, but in this game you have to hold your hand in such a weird position to be able to aim down sights to be accurate, it got to a point for me where it was getting uncomfortable and i have to just basically hip fire and waste more ammo because the guns are angled upward for some reason.
I haven't gotten too far in the game but it's pretty basic, 1 bullet to headshot, 3 or 4 to kill in the body, can shoot off limbs which is pretty cool. You can't melee which is pretty bad, your hands have no collision with anything so they'll just go through surfaces like your Danny Phantom. I haven't gotten to a point were I've had no ammo but with having literally no melee I would see no other solution but to restart from your last save.
Overall the game was pretty good for it's time in 2016/17, but 4/5 years later it's not the best, a lot of other games beat it in what it ultimately aimed to be. I'd recommend it as something to try to get into Zombie VR shooters as this isn't that intense, but not for the full price, definitely on a deal that 50% or over, at the time of this review, I bought it at 67%, if you want a somewhat decent zombie shooter, try PropagationVR, its free but your stuck in place apart from turning, guns are manual reloading from what I remember and it's pretty scary.

In multiple circumstances, objective mandatory items would not spawn, soft locking the game and forcing a reload, most notably during the tutorial.
In many circumstances your ability to switch weapons or drop weapons would be randomly disabled, and force you to use exclusively what you had in your hand at the time.
Controls are clunky and un-intuitive, and the physics snapping on things like your inventory, are intolerably intrusive to gameplay.
Perhaps this game could be redeemed and updated to fix these issues in future, but in its current state, this more closely resembles a demo or beta than a full release game worth $30.
I havent felt this duped out of my money since Hunt Down The Freeman, or No Man's Sky.
And if it werent for the fact the bundle I purchased contained both Superhot VR AND Onward, I would have immediately chosen to refund this veritable failure to launch of a game.
Very disappointing.

First of all, for a limited ammo resource game, it's more than a little surprising to see how much of a damage sponge zombies can be. I started off on the normal difficulty campaign, the first setting shown for the campaign. So needless to say, this is what they anticipate the average player doing first. If difficulty determines enemy health, I don't know. I simply wanted to provide context.
Secondly, it seemed rather hard to hit zombies appropriately. I cite my bad aim here as a plausible cause, but I noticed on several occasions that damage would show up on the head without counting as a headshot. Which, to my knowledge with many of the headshots I made, should be a one-hit kill. This wasn't on armored enemies or anything, just the stock, basic zombie. Not a good show when this game's idea of an end-of-level fight is just the same hoard scenario every time.
Things also aren't very clear. The first time i picked up a grenade, it told me to pull the pin. There were no zombies around at all for me to feel like that was wise, so I simply held it on my person. However, I was unsure how to put it in my inventory. It wasn't until later that I figured out that what you're intended to do is put it high up on your chest. I could take the blame on that for not exploring the option more, but it took a bit longer than anticipated.
I'd also like to cite the same early level for having a certain task. Get the key from the building, get to the car, acquire winch. Simple enough. Except this is where I found a game-breaking bug. Because, upon opening the car, my pistol vanished. You know, the gun you kind of need to shoot zombies? With nothing I could use to defend myself, and the gun I'd tossed away in the building for an upgrade, I was left defenseless as the first boss hoard swarmed by character, with a mere grenade in hand. This is an excellent time to mention that throwing the grenade is skin to tossing a bag of flour, as I soon discovered when it went all of one foot.
The level after that was more of the same, but oddly enough, the key mechanic upgraded by having the key go in your inventory, allowing you to unlock its door with a free hand instead. Why wasn't this the case for the car? Who knows. I'm sure the same deity that stole my pistol has the answer, even if I do not. (Did I mention leaving and re-entering the level didn't fix this, and my pistol was still gone? I had to restart it, which is not fun when you have to start back at the base.) The SMGs were a little more fun to use, but there wasn't enough ammo to be really effective, considering the zombie sponge issue from earlier. But I managed to beat the hoard, using up all my SMG ammo, and having a little pistol ammo left, as I headed into the Underground.
Why on earth, this early in the game, do you have a level that outright requires you to hold a flashlight in one hand the whole time? The areas may get lit up with generators, but there's huge sections with no light whatsoever, save for that damned flashlight. I credit the game for simplifying the reload mechanic, but considering there's no way to track magazine contents, you have to fire until empty constantly to avoid wasting ammo by emptying your gun every time you reload it. Not to mention to fire up generators, you need a free hand, meaning that either you have to put your gun down, or put it on your belt, sacrificing the very scarce space you have for guns. This applies to everything, since the flashlight is effectively your only way to see (and not a very good one, might I add). So, already frustrated, I arrived at a section with a lever, putting the gun down and picking it back up, adding to the tedium. This was where the game decided it be appropriate to throw zombies at me from all directions, leaving me little clue to this outside of the dialogue, when most other rushes of zombies had the courtesy of coming from one direction so you're not immediately overwhelmed. Needless to say, without any time to prepare, I was nearly instantly killed, despite unloading bullets into my attackers like an arcade junkie unloads quarters.
I gave up there, and requested a refund. This is not fun. It seems like it's more geared towards the multiplayer, which I did not stay around long enough to try. I frankly don't want to risk further disappointment. If I have to give the game anything, it's charming enough, and the protagonist's voiceover was fun enough to listen to. But that's hardly a reason to keep going. It may not be the worst thing in the world, but from the poor choice in level design, obsession with making things as needlessly frustrating, unsatisfying gameplay and gunplay, and glitches, it's not an experience I'd recommend over most other titles. If you're looking for good gunplay, try BONEWORKS. If you're looking for good multiplayer gunplay, try Pavlov. If you're looking for good close quarters combat, try GORN. If you're looking for intense waves of enemies, try Space Pirate Trainer or Superhot VR.
There is no good reason to get this game over these other titles, in my opinion. It's a no from me.

The campaign was pretty good and had a decent story, I also really enjoyed the DLC campaigns too. I played them all entirely solo since not many of my friends even have VR yet so I can't say anything about the co-op aspect
There's also a survival mode where you just survive an infinite amount of rounds in a specific location taken from the campaign which is also fun too but me personally i'm more interested in the campaign story stuff when it comes to games, i'm sure survival would be great with friends as with most things but solo survival does get boring and the challenge never increases as rounds progress so if you have an open space to train the zombies like the zombies mode in CoD then you'll basically survive forever until you let yourself die
Overall, 100% worth the money and if you like the base game the DLCs are also 100% worth getting, the DLC is pretty cheap too I only paid like $7 total for both of them
Also extra note: If you play the game with smooth movement (which i'd recommend personally) be careful walking around some areas because there's spots in some parts where you could get glitched into a wall or something and you'd have to reload the checkpoint to get out of it, i've had it happen several times throughout the base game's campaign. Haven't had the issue in the DLC campaigns though

The weapons and the oculus controllers felt misaligned. I had to bend my wrist unnaturally forward to be able to aim for a headshot from far away. After a while I just resorted to getting close, hip firing the first bullet, and then align my shot based on that. It felt more natural.
The level design is sub par. The game is extremely linear.
There is a bug that happens when you inadvertently teleport into objects, which renders your screen black. Really disorienting in VR.
I lost the sight of my gun several times because the game was trying to teach me how to drop weapons, but the command didn't work.
Extremely pricey for such a short game (even after heavy discounts), feels more like a demo than a full fledged game.
The positive:
Fun in coop, as any shit game can be. You get some good laughs at the physics and ridiculous animations.
The gunplay feels good after you get used to the misaligned iron sights / VR controllers. Would be better with more enemy variety.
At least it doesn't overstay it's welcome.

(P.S. Some content is still in the process of being developed as recently as Dec 2020)
Bad stuff first: This game is short. Like really short. Expect it to be over in about 3-5 hours if you're taking your time. For the amount of hype it got, it uses texture packs that even make me cringe a little (and I only played N64 until about 5 years ago when I finally got an xbox 360, so that's saying something), but this game did come out a while ago, so little bit of slack I guess.
The DLCs: don't get them with the game. Buy the game on sale and if you are really itching for more content, they're there, however, they are even buggier and shorter than the original game. Deadman: 30min, Damned: I think a mission critical item failed to spawn in about 5 min in, so I don't know yet. Also my magnum got stuck to have the revolver open which was nice for counting shots left, but somewhat undercut by the fact that my left hand couldn't grab items anymore.
HOWEVER! Aside from throwing physics which could really use some tweaking (maybe better in the 1.5 beta, but I haven't tried that yet) It has wonderful mechanics and a clean interface with relatable main characters that you just gotta root for. Really well written scripts, and ammo storing and reloading becomes second nature really quick. It also has some lovely horror elements and is a great addition to any VR library, but not for $40. There is no aim assist, but the guns also don't fire anything but true, sniping zombies from across a canyon with a pistol makes you feel like a bad ass. Also in horde mode, you have a variety of maps to choose from where each one actually involves completely different tactics and isn't just a reskin with some stuff mushed around. (4th level under development with beta access).

In VR. Totally in.
The campaign/story mode is short but fun.
Horde mode is just waves, still fun.
Replayability: yup
My only complaints would be the story is too short and shallow and I would like to have had a backpack to store weapons instead of being limited to four weapons.
Overall, fun game and I would recommend it.

More games like this need coop. It didn't feel immersion breaking, even though the character was behaving as if they were alone. The story was a great backdrop and I enjoyed it with my brother.

but unfortunately this game gave me 3d game motion sickness and made me vomit for first time in my life.
I've played so many FPS/TPS/VR games and ONLY this game gave me 3D motion sickness.
Again, I really liked concept of game and really wanted to love it, but ugh...

After completing Alyx a few months later, I decided to revisit Arizona Sunshine. At first, I didn't encounter the disappearing guns bug anymore so I was excited to give it another try. The game doesn't hold up to Alyx but I didn't care. After all, this was all about shooting zombies so I didn't exactly expect an award winning story line. However, about two hours into the game my guns started disappearing again. It looks like this bug pops up when you go back to a previous checkpoint (either because you died in-game or because you continued a previous session). It turns out that the guns you were holding in your hand are just gone. Now that's a pretty annoying bug. It bothered me so much that at some point I was more concerned about which guns I could do without in case I reached a checkpoint in the game and had to return to it (because only the guns on your belt would still be there then). A second annoying bug is that the scope of the sniper rifle makes the zombies invisible. That made the sniper rifle completely useless. Apparently, this bug has now been fixed in a recent patch but it shouldn't have been there in the first place.
Despite these two major flaws, I did enjoy the game. However, I'm afraid I can't recommend it as long as the disappearing guns bug is still in there; it's just too frustrating.
Update: Coincidentally, a couple of hours after I posted this review, a new patch was released which fixes this bug. So, fair is fair, I've updated my review from not recommended to recommended.

Simplistic reloading, boring start to the gameplay (Might or might not ramp as it progresses), and have teleport motion as default. If you liked the first VR games with teleportation and instant reloads then this might be fun, but if you favour the new age VR games you are advised to not waste your money.

Basically: everything in this game looks and feels bad, and any bits of fun are buried under all the other issues there are. Play Boneworks, HL: Alyx, or Saints and Sinners instead if you want to play a VR shooter with zombies.

For the reduced price of 14.79€ I'd say its worth it if you have someone to co-op with, otherwise its probably going to be pretty frustrating. So unless its on sale and you are going to be playing with a friend: stay away!

<< The good >>
The graphics are decent and it runs smoothly on my rig.
Movement of the controllers are transferred to ingame smoothly and w/o any bugs.
Gameplay is very intuitive and fun. It's quite awesome to mow through hordes of undead on the one side, but to carefully open doors and scare to death when a Freddie sneaks up from behind on the other side.
<< The mediocre >>
The checkpoint system is not from this century anymore. It somehow works, but sometimes forgets your progress or your loadout.
With higher graphic settings, your aim gets... worse. Weapons are just not accurate anymore, until you lower the settings.
<< The bad >>
The only really bad thing I encounter are the bugs. There are plenty of it, but there are a few annoying af:
- Handling of the AWP is awful. Beside it does not seem possible to use the scope in a decent way, it's also bugged. I did not see a single Freddie through the scope, only floating helmets from time to time.
- Whatever I tried - throwing a grenade mostly results in blowing my sorry butt sky high.
- It's possible to teleport yourself into a wall by warping too close to it. If you're lucky, you get out, if not you have to reload.
- There are several invisible barriers, which you can pass one-way. If you're behind it, you can't move back
<< Conclusion >>
Fun game with a decent playtime of 5-6 hours, good coop and different difficulty levels. There are bugs, but most of the time you won't encounter any problems. I wouldn't recommend to spend the 30 bucks nonsale price, but if you see it for around 15 bucks - get it!

+Works with all VR headsets
+8 levels of the initial campaign with decently size levels with tons of zombies
+Protagonist is kinda funny
+Zombies are called Freddies? Ok…
+24 different kinds of guns all throughout the game hidden or in plain sight several: pistols, shotguns, assault rifles, smgs, snipers, etc.
+Grenades
+Great in depth settings
+Ability to change locomotion to either teleport or walk
+Several zombies are armoured making it more challenging
+The dark cave mine level where you have to hold a flashlight at all times in one hand was very scary and such a cool level
+Can definitely be scary when there's all of a sudden a zombie behind you
+Can play the game in co-op with a friend or host a game online as well as with horde mode
+Horde mode which is a survival wave based game mode where you get more new guns and ammo per wave you complete as you try to survive as long as possible with numerous maps to choose from
+I liked the arcade style menu selection screens
+2 DLCs that add new campaigns and are relatively cheap (one is only $2)
+Game looks very good some really nice scenery spots
+Cross play with users who aren’t on Steam (I don’t think you can play with PS4 players though)
-Some achievements are broken primarily just the two requiring you to pick up all 4 ducks and pick up all 24 guns in the base game. The game seems to not track your progress and therefore never unlocks. I’ve seen multiple people experiencing the same thing and myself have attempted these achives multiple times even playing through the entire game and grabbing them all and still nothing.
-Can be annoying how the rotation button that spins you around is the same button to drop your mag when you need to reload
-Maybe I just have some tracking issues with my controllers but I felt like I constantly struggled to drop the mag out of my gun and hit it against my chest to reload and sometimes it seemingly wouldn’t drop the mag or reload when I hit myself making horde moments frustrating.
-I think that if you could use a controller that would be super awesome and would make things way easier and just enjoyable. Considering how the PS4 has the Aim Controller kinda puts us Steam users at a disadvantage.
-Should have an option to start a multiplayer game while you are in game and allow people to join mid-match as sitting in a lobby waiting for others takes forever just to get the game started
-You can hold more than two guns on yourself at once however sometimes switching between these can be confusing as initially you have a gun in each hand and press the grab button can switch them so here is my issue: I have two pistols in each hand and I go to switch to another gun in my right hand and now that I’ve decided to switch my only options are a shotgun and assault rifle and my pistol has disappeared in thin air and cannot be picked and isn’t dropped.
-Horde mode can definitely be challenging especially with the lacking player count and community. It is hard to come by other players so doing it solo is very difficult and my only real issue is the kill 1000 zombies in horde mode achievement in a single sitting. Kinda far fetched and something only real pros can really pull off. What I dislike most about this is that we cannot use any kind of standard gaming controller but only VR controllers, but on PS4 they have the aim controller AND for some reason this achievement has been nerfed for PS4 players as its only 600 kills from them not 1000 yet they have the advantage of a better controller...?
-Leaderboards for horde mode is full of hackers and bullshit scores
-Apocalypse mode??? Did we need a super bullshit difficulty in a VR game dear god...You die in one hit and no checkpoints so any death resets you back to the start of the level and barley any ammo like it's just ridiculous like bruh
-Protagonist can be annoying and nerdy sometimes
Arizona Sunshine is a great VR game, a very funny zombie game one of the best ones out there. Great sense of settings, online abilities, a set of great DLCs, tons of guns, locations, etc. There are some faulty mechanics and ridiculous difficulties in some aspects of the game but besides that this game is great.

Gameplay Analysis
When it comes to the first generation of VR games released during the HTC Vive’s and Oculus’ debut year, Arizona Sunshine was one of the best choices back then. Three years later, it still holds up its value and quality quite well. The game itself is pretty straightforward: Shoot zombies to survive, loot guns and ammos, and progress through different levels to complete the story campaigns.
Resident Evil in VR
Playing Arizona Sunshine kept reminding me of Resident Evil but in VR. The feeling is similar, zombies are slow and vulnerable with shots to the head. Simple puzzle elements like finding keys or levers to open locked doors and gates to progress through the level. The weapons are not over-the-top high grade military rifles but just simple Pistols and SMGs. Ammo is somewhat scarce but enough snooping around with the drawers, cabinets, and lockers will give you plenty of supply. The story is not as complicated as Resident Evil, only as barebones as possible to get things going. The character is voice acted and there are subtitles available, for better or for worse.
It's High Noon!
As opposed to other horror games using the darkness of the night as an ally to terrify the player, Arizona Sunshine instead fully embraces broad daylight for a zombie apocalypse setting. And it works out pretty well. Levels featuring open areas clearly show the vast desert landscape of Arizona. Using the desolate, deserted backdrop against the undead army to terrify instead of using the good old darkness. Still, there are pitch black segments especially in indoor areas that even require you to have a flashlight or turn on light sources around the map to be able to see. To be honest these can be fairly terrifying at times. The game contains just the right amount of balance of daylight and darkness and utilizes them effectively.
Not another Tech Demo™
VR gaming right now is kind of infamous for its games feeling like a bunch of shallow tech demos instead of full sized AAA experiences, and I agree with this. Today, It’s still hard to find a full sized campaign experience for a VR game. Even more so three years ago, during the advent of VR gaming in 2016 when Arizona Sunshine was released. It is one of the first VR titles to offer a full sized AAA experience instead of a tech demo. Granted, it’s still short when it comes to video game standards, beatable in only 2-4 hours of gameplay. But this is VR we’re talking about. 4 hours of single-player/coop campaign experience is already alot for a VR game.
Amnesia Sunshine
For a game that prides itself as one of first to feature a full-size campaign for a VR game. The save and checkpoint system just plain sucks. The game suddenly has an amnesia from time to time and forgets your progress and current weapons. To better explain it, it functions similarly to Half-Life when you change levels. All the levels are in just one straight continuity and only the first and last parts of the connecting levels overlap. It generally works fine and you carry over your weapons from the last segment, but once you die and reload. It suddenly decides to forget your weapons and ammos and gives you its own preset. Sometimes you don’t even get to the nearest checkpoint but farther back. As a result, gathering weapons and ammos for this game is pretty much useless especially if you die a lot.
Content and Modes
Aside from the Main Campaign that takes about 2-4 hours to complete. Arizona Sunshine features two fairly priced DLC campaigns that take an additional 1 hour each to complete. Plus an endless horde mode where it reuses maps from the campaigns and pits you against endless waves of zombies until you die and try to reach a high score. Great for those who just want to shoot zombies for fun instead of playing through the story or for those who just want to have a zombie game demo to show off their VR headset to friends and family.
Multiplayer is a nice bonus, as all the campaigns and the horde modes are playable single-player or cooperatively with a friend. If you somehow have a friend to play with a VR headset. This is a must play title.
Weapon Handling
As far as gunplay, Arizona Sunshine has got it right with single-handed weapons. Shooting is very accurate. Reloading is easy with its Time Crisis-like system where you just need to lower the weapon for a while and it will start to reload automatically without any complicated gestures. I just wish that they took their time to include semi-realistic Pavlov-like reloading gestures though, to cater the hardcore players.
With two-handed weapons, they dropped the ball on this one. Handling two handed weapons with two hands is actually worse than just using one hand. Aiming is buggy and chaotic with two hands and using one hand doesn’t even affect the recoil. You end up using one hand for every weapon instead. Yes it’s more efficient to use one hand per weapon, imagine dual wielding a shotgun and SMG combined with the easy reload system, but it breaks immersion and the point of two handed weapons.
The controls are buggy as hell, sometimes weapons won’t be grabable with a hand but grabable with the other hand only. Sometimes you can’t take them out of your holster and seem locked out. It’s gotten me killed more times than I can count and should have been a fixed bug by now.
Technical Analysis
Arizona Sunshine is a beautiful VR game even three years after release. The graphics have aged well and it runs great on my system with an i7-8700k and GTX 1080, using an Oculus Quest via ALVR. I even increased the rendering resolution a bit to make it look more crisp and it still stayed at around 90FPS. The anti-aliasing gets ugly at farther distances, but other than that the game looks and runs fine.
All the negatives I have in this game are the technical bugs. Both in the chaotic and inconsistent weapon handling and the amnesiac save and checkpoints system. They are borderline game and immersion breaking. Especially with the upcoming VR games this 2020 that will push the standards and set higher benchmarks, these technical bugs may just be the deciding factor on whether this game still holds up or not coming into 2020.
Value and Conclusion
As a first generation VR game released three years ago, Arizona Sunshine still holds up its value and quality well. It goes on sale every now and then together with the DLCs, so try to get it while on sale for best value. Despite the technical bugs mentioned earlier, it’s still one of the must play VR zombie titles at the moment, especially with a friend.
If you are new to VR gaming, just make sure to play it first before playing newer titles like Boneworks, Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners, or Half-Life: Alyx as those games set the standards even higher and might negatively impact your experience with older, ”first gen” VR games.
