Leider!

Its a RTS game with detailed graphics and good animations that offers a lot of different troops and nations.

Overall the basic principle of the game is quite similar to games such as Company of Heroes. If you like CoH, you will like this game.

Sure, some things could be different but overall it is a very fun rock, paper, scissors game with a good ingame depth that requires micromanagement. To be successfull, you have to gain knowledge about the strenghts and weaknesses of your own and of the enemy troops. You also have to stay on top of things as for example a well timed horse charge that kills or forces your bowman to retreat can change the outcome of the whole game.

Unfortunately the community is comparably small because the game requires a brain to play and there are no pay 2 win mechanisms.

Company of Heroes trifft Mittelalter?

In etwa ähnlich kann man wohl Ancestors Legacy beschreiben.

Was ist gleich:

Also..

So genug geweint

Its an ok 1 and done. The skirmish and multiplayer are garbage that the devs kicked to the curb and never came back to. Is the linear campaign mode alone worth a AAA price tag? Not even close. So with that being the only real offering I can't recommend this game.

Great strategy and quite historical game with big missions with 9 Total Campaigns and 5 different cultures ( Vikings, Anglo - Saxons, Germans, Slavs and Saracens if you include and Saracen's DLC. Every faction has unique abilities and units. Amazing war music especially during the combat and in Menu. In every mission attack and defense have the same importance so secure your defence first of all, upgrade your units and settlemets, use your benefits of your faction's religion and leave always at least 1 squad in every camp behind before prepare for assault. You can command the maximum 10 squads in every mission with total 10 warriors in every one of them so becareful how you use your every squad and you can also heal and replenish your warriors. And the most important capture all the villages to secure your supplies and weaken the enemy before attack the main settlement. There are introducing videos before the missions with story background and cinematic videos during the missions. Also, good graphics, unit variations and battle animations like Total war style. Valhala awaits you! or in whatever paradise you believe. Oh, did I forget it? There are 4 religions in the game: German paganism, Slavic paganism, Christianity and Islam with DLC.

8/10 Great

Im giving it a thumbs up because I love the setting of the game and the historically accurate aspects, and its well made (aside from the voice acting which is...just, bad). However, I dont plan on going back and playing anymore. The game does get very tedious further into the story you go, and it just seems like theres a formula or meta you follow in order to win, and within the formula has room for strategy of course, but the game always plays out the same. There's only one win condition and thats to wipe out the enemy team, so you essentially just use Starcraft strats and just pump out more troops than your opponent and overwhelm them. If there was other win conditions then there would be more room for strategy, but unfortunately theres not. Like a said, the devs still did a great job with the game, b ut I just got very bored

I happen to be a veteran of the good old Relic Ent. games like Company Of Heroes I and I mean back in the DVD era.
So as I was searching for something a bit similar to play, (squad tactics with abilities and such), I came across Ancestors legacy and boy I was pumped. It seemed like a good descendant of the CoH I loved to play as a teenager.
At first glance, the game wasn't bad. It has nice graphics, 4 (5 if you include the DLC) factions to play that feel different and some unique mechanics like setting traps.
But the missions seem way to old in their design. And that's something not cool when CoH and Men of War had better 10 years before Ancestors Legacy.
AI is bad. Not terrible mind you, but rather bad. After some missions, you can easily see that baiting the AI into bad decisions is the easiest way to cheese the difficulty. They will follow predeterminded paths towards your base that you can easily pitfall spam them to death.
Units, on the other hand, seem mostly balanced with some rather hiccups here and there but overall you can see the faction patterns work properly.
I really.really wanted to enjoy this particular game as it is my cup of tea but after 7 hours and 1,5 campaign I felt very bored to even continue it.

Give it a go(ON SALE) if you like these type of games. But if you are looking for a game with the proper real time squad tactics experience, I would probably try something else instead.

This game has a good concept, but in reality is horrible.
Everything was very cool at first, the settings, the atmosphere, the sounds, the combat... but then you will quickly find out that none of that mattered, as this game is pretty much how you'd expect to play starcraft: just keep churning out units non-stop like a factory, quickly capture some bases, grab more resources, churn out more units and overwhelm your enemies.
it quickly becomes very boring and a huge chore, you'd just hope each game would finish quickly.

It is the eighth of June, the years of the Lord 793. A bloodied limp body falls on the stone floor, its hand still clutching a slender prayer book, even though the monk's skull has just been torn apart by a heavy blow with a two-handed ax. Lindisfarne Abbey in Northumbria was insidious. and mercilessly desecrated by the bloodthirsty invasion of the robbing Gentiles from the north.

This historical real-time game is somewhat reminiscent of the World War II Company of Heroes and is also based on remarkably the same elements of gameplay. The user interface and the processing of some mechanics, such as the emphasis on unit tactics, including the choice of an emergency escape from the battlefield, or the minimalist construction of the base, are already similar.
In Ancestors Legacy you enter the medieval scenery. More precisely, the linear stories of individual mini-campaigns map events between the 400 years of the early and early Middle Ages. As a rule, you take on the role of aides to the famous historical figures of the European Middle Ages, with whom you will use your tactical skills to help you celebrate the triumphs. As in CoH, of course, these are fictional stories against the background of firmly entrenched historical events.

AL is not overflowing with originality, but offers a portion of decent entertainment for several long evenings for fans of history. The game is an honest invitation to the dark times of European history, albeit with a few freckles in beauty, but with a rapid fall and a slaughterhouse pretty close.
However, the best thing about the whole game is the incredibly high-quality soundtracks. Unforgettable epic music has been created for each nation. 55%

This is an ok game, with potential to be a good one but still requires a lot of work . Feels like an early access.

AI of the units (if there is any) is completely messed up and frustrating.
'Retreat' command is messed up and frustrating.
Units path finding is messed up and frustrating.

I have played many RTS games in my life and I don't remember having zero control over my own units like I do here.

1) When you command unit to go anywhere - the unit will use every way except of going straight where you want to. No button to manage this, like i.e. force the unit to stick to the roads (what seems but ‘default’ setting but again – not always) or sacrifice speed and go in a straight line through the forest to the target area (in a normal, intuitive way). Null, nada. The unit(s) will go all the way around, engaging every single enemy unit, camp, watchtower and end up dying.

2) When you command unit to retreat – there is no gathering point to be set up for the team. Instead of going away from the enemy, like you would do sometimes with your archers who have just been ambushed – the unit will go all the way around, engaging every single enemy unit, camp, watchtower, directly through the enemy unit you want it to be away from - and dying.

3) The above is extremely frustrating, when this happens to one of your key hero/character units that are crucial to survive .

4) There should be some sort of better auto-save system. When your key hero/character dies, you are back to the beginning of the mission loosing an hour (or more) of your progress. If in the heat of the batt… In the heat of micro-managing your units between an actual fight an moving them back to camp to refresh and heal them you will forget to save the game – you are done.

5) Back to unit AI – the units miss some sort of ‘auto-agression’? What I mean is that your unit will stand in one place, be shot at by enemy archers and do nothing. Just stand there and keep dying.

6) As much as I understand the idea of hiding your units in bushes/high grass – the game tries to be more ‘tactical’ in this aspect – I can’t understand why is seeing radius of archers so big comparing to other units. Many times your units are getting shot by enemy archers, whom your units do not even detect, even though the enemy archers are standing in the middle of the road, and not being ‘tactically’ hidden in the bushes. Fog of war/detection radius should be reworked here.

7) The above applies to your archers as well. When you attack enemy village – just use archers. You will outrange all the village defences. Absolutely stupid, and frustrating, especially when this happens to yourself. You have conquered a village, upgraded it, built three (maximum) watchtowers and… One enemy squad of archers destroys it all. Could you counter the archers? No, because your units are walking all the way around the map or are back in the camp all around the map refilling the squad and healing themselves.

8) The game is generally very slow. Any progress takes a lot of time, because you balance between clicking ‘attack’ and ‘retreat’ all the time. Your units are constantly at the base or on the way to the base to heal and being micro-managed one by one, instead of actively participating in the battle. You will not just keep throwing your units into the battle like you would do in most RTS games because… You are limited to only 10 units. As much as population limit is not something new in such games – here it is somehow poorly executed. 10 units is not enough to assert dominance and keep control over the map and you find yourself constantly re-conquering back and forth the same village you have already conquered 75 times in last 30 minutes.

9) There is like zero economy control in this game. You can control all 5 villages (which is 95% of the map mostly) and be preparing to attack major enemy camp but… You will keep waiting for like 10 minutes for your resources to grow in order to build those two missing units since even though you conquered 95% of the map there is only one iron mine and you need that damn iron to build a little better unit/upgrade current one.

10) The villages and resources are fixed. The buildings at your main camp and conquered villages are fixed. There is no strategic placing watchtowers where you want them. No, they will be placed, where game creators made them to be. Fixed position. Nowhere near where you would like them to be. Facing your own camp, instead of direction, where enemy comes from. Absolutely stupid…

11) Overall balance. Why do I have limitation of only 10 units, while the enemy throws like 30 at me most of the time? I have realized that first 30 minutes of each mission I spend in defence, sitting in my own camp trying to level up all of my units and gather them up to the limit of 10, since otherwise you get outnumbered all the time.

As someone who grew up playing the RTS games, this is a super way mega watered down version of that.
If you grew up playing Starcraft, Warcraft, Age Of Empires, Army Men RTS, or others similar I would personally avoid this game.
Too much of it is predetermined and you can't adjust your strategy as much as I would like, lack of adjusting even building locations with base building is a major let down for me.

I would say if you are new to this kind of game, this might be a good fit for you, BUT for me personally, as this is the point of these reviews, in my personal opinion I would NOT recommend this game, UNLESS you are looking for an easy introduction to RTS games.

Everything as far as I could tell with things like graphics, and game mechanics worked great. It is just too easy of a game and not what I would be looking for from a RTS style game.

Meh. As someone who grew up playing the OG RTS games like Warcraft, Starcraft, C&C, Age Of Empires, etc. the level of automation in this (or lack of micromanagement) leaves me bored watching the game play itself. The base building was a real huge letdown, building to a fabricated preset. Your hero dying and not being able to resurrect/recruit new ones also seemed like a botched design choice.
Lost interest in the slow pacing of the campaign; and the single player AI skirmishes were not exciting enough...
Decent cinematics during campaign, but the rest of the visuals are quite ugly, with little to no variation in the buildings.
Sorry but it's a no from me.

I enjoyed playing every campaign. Each one was fun with the units given. Gotta say, the grenadiers from the Saracen campaign are kinda busted. As soon as I was able to use them, I only used them and still won with next to no casualties on those missions. Only major downside for me is that, as an RTS player, this felt very limited in terms of mechanics and scale.

It looks good and honestly plays pretty simple. It won't satisfy seasoned RTS players looking for an indepth RTS, but it does scratch the cinematic fights (and this is achieved with a cinematic cam that starts when you zoom in on a unit fully) and casual RTS gameplay. (Will return to this with a more indepth review soon.)

Graphics are pretty good for a RTS game, soundtracks are good as well, you can feel the atmosphere even though you play a strategy game. Singleplayer missions are historically accurate, you can play as Slavs, Germans, Britons, Vikings and if you buy Saladin DLC you can play as Ayyubid Empire as well. Missions are very challenging. You interact with environment like hiding in fields or dark places, flanking and ambushing. So you create your own strategy depending on your choice thus you can defeat your enemies not only by brute force but with tactics these make this game distinctive among other RTS games. AI is very hard to beat. Units are balanced and realistic, you can't just rush into group of spearman with cavalry. Unfortunately there are so few maps and multiplayer is so dead this game is a gem covered in sh*t and it needs to be polished ASAP !
Note,
Just bought Saladin DLC, soundtracks are good, missions are way different than normal campaign missions. New units are fun to use and have variety of brand new skills. Unfortunately, Ayyubid's voice actors do have British accent it is so ridiculous and unrealistic, they used actors with local accents for other factions but for Saladin DLC, devs did not hesitate to improve quality.

Hello to all friends and creators of this beautiful game. I need to advise you to make an immediate correction.
One: Catapults shoot without a percentage of error, which is not good. It is better to set a percentage of error to shoot them.
Two: When we capture a village, the enemy destroys it with a catapult. This is not good at all. It is better that this happens after 4 to 6 blows. Please correct this issue.

I enjoyed playing Ancestors Legacy.
However, as a RTS player, there are some minor issues that disturbed me such as like the resources gathering system.. capturing the villages & defending them takes long time just to grow up your army. But it's ok I got used to it.
Another point, the wells mechanism. If it was efficient like Stronghold Crusader, things would have been nice. And btw the 4th mission of Arabian campaign is truly a pain.. that water counter drove me mad LOL xD

Overall. I highly recommend this game. I hope the developers will add some new DLCs in the near future :)

Initially I thought this game seemed pretty cool. It has single player mini campaigns that reminded me a little of the historical single player campaigns from Age of Empires. But after playing it for a few hours I found I just wasn't really enjoying it and I'll explain why further on.

First I'll talk about the stuff I did like. As mentioned it has several mini campaigns revolving around different events from medieval history. There are 4 factions with 2 campaigns each. (Theres also a DLC campaign but I didnt get that). So you can play campaigns as Vikings, Anglo-Saxons, Slavs and Germans with each mini camapign revolving around a figure from history like Rurik for example. The campaigns are broken down into 5 different missions each with differing objectives and promoting different playstyles. I quite liked this approach to building the single player experience.

I also thought the game looks really good. Maps look nice, you can zoom right down on your units and watch them fight. The FMVs between missions have a gritty hand drawn style which really suits the game.

Where this game let me down was the general game play though.

To start I wasnt a fan of the base management and resource gathering aspects. You have a base in each level where you can recruit troops and build stuff like recruitment and upgrade buildings but you have no control over placement. As your base is your only way to recruit more units it can be a pain when you want to reinforce units fighting an enemy base on the other side of the map as they have a long way to go and never arrive in time.

The only way you can generate more resources is by capturing villages dotted around the map. This seems cool at first as it seems like something real armies would have done to gain supplies. However as they're dotted around the map it can be sometimes be difficult to keep them all under control and the amount of resources you can gather feels really limited sometimes. Especially the food resource which always seemed to run negative when I had a lot of units. You can get a building to upgrade resource collection or amount used but the difference this made always seemed negligible. You can sometimes upgrade defensive capabilties of villages but you can never directly upgrade the resource collection points which I think should have been something they added.

The combat also has promise but never really delivers. You can do stuff like lay traps, hide your units in long grass and ambush passing enemies. However I never found it practical to make use of these regularly. Units have counterparts they are weak or strong against and using flanking for example will do more damage but again you never really get to utilise these. Most engagements end in a big blog and once units are engaged you can disengage and move them, unless you retreat which makes them run back to the nearest base.

Combat can be really slow which is a nuisance particularly when assaulting an enemy base as they can recruit one or two more units while your units are still struggling to beat their initial opponents. As I mentioned earlier, reinforcement is nearly impossible as your base is usually far away and troops move slowly. You're also limited to about 10 units max on each map so you cant really get away with trying to massively outnumber the enemy.

You also have to babysit your units a lot particularly as the AI likes to park a unit of archers just out of view who can start peppering your units with arrows.

Anyway to sum it all up I did find this game promising initially but as all the flaws listed above took their toll I got increasingly frustrated to the point I stopped playing. I wouldn't really recommend this game unless your a massive RTS fan, and even then I'd advise just waiting for a big discount on sale.

Honestly this game is amazing. As someone who grew up playing and still loves the total war series, I admit I was put off a little by the small unit sizes and small scale of the battles. But my god does this game do them well!!! The story is interesting and well worth the play through. Long enough to be worth the investment but not so long that you get bored. The learning curve is steep but not insurmountable as the game takes you through each feature step by step. Its a very easy drop in and play game once you understand the basics and the skirmish battles are great fun. Battles .............. wow. Honestly the look of this game is superb. The ability to zoom right down into your unit and watch it fight as a 'follow cam' is a new thing for me but the way this game does fights i use it constantly. The combat is brutal and real. A real cinematic battle on your PC screen. My only gripe is its a little sparse on content and variation but honestly none of that matters. Its a definite winner for strategy gamers and it look amazing whilst it does it. Highly recommend.

It's a game that a lot of people seem to really love it or really hate it. As for me I enjoy it greatly. I do wish there was a little more variety in the units and skirmish maps but at least there is a fair amount to do with units that are present. I also like how there is support for mods as well.

I was incredibly excited to play this game and had high hopes for it. As a big fan of RTS games, especially medieval games, I thought I would naturally like this game. However, I was disappointed in a number of aspects and would definitely not recommend this game to any other fans of RTS games. It was a chore just getting through the first tutorial campaign.

GRAPHICS: The graphics fail in two regards: (1) overall quality and (2) definition. The former is surprising, considering the game's newness. Despite the screenshots and videos, the game's graphics remain several years behind what is currently capable. Reminds me of Age of Empires 3-era graphics. Secondly, the definition is terrible. It's incredibly hard to tell the difference between unit types unless you are zoomed all the way in. You can't even tell the difference between swordsmen and spearmen. Additionally, the units blend far too well into the game's landscape, making finding units difficult. The game's unique feature of realistic hand-to-hand combat is lost due to the reality that the player must be zoomed out to have any control over the battlefield.

GAMEPLAY: There are three major issues with gameplay: Tactics, Base-Building, and Development. Primarily, the game boasts its squad/tactics-like gameplay. While there ways to micro-manage your soldiers in battle, like hiding them in bushes or trees, the majority of the time the battles devolved into mob-mashing odd collections of soldiers together. The tactics aspect was entirely lost in a general skirmish. If you are looking for a small-scale Total War game, this is NOT it. Secondly, there is very little base-building in the game. You start with a primary encampment and then must expand to pre-planned neutral towns. You can construct buildings, but cannot decide their placement. Lastly, the development of the game is not RTS-like in any way. The game feels like a birds-eye-view of a COD or Battlefield match with Domination and Annihilation (Deathmatch) games with points. You must use your squads to capture towns and hold them to earn enough points to win, like any generic FPS game.

MAPS/CIVS: Any good RTS game will have a variety of maps and civs to chose from. That's what makes RTS games fun. I have no complaints about the civs in Ancestors, except for the lack of imagination. Most are all generic European civs you would find in any game and the differences between them are minor. There is architectural and unit changes, but due to the poor graphics you barely notice the differences. The maps, however, are what really bring the game down. They are suffocating and force you into artificial choke-points. The use of cliffs and water break the maps down into several pathways, reminiscent of League of Legends.

CONCLUSION: Overall the game feels as if it was primarily designed as a team multiplayer game for fans of typical FPS games, but with a commander's view. It is not an RTS game and during my playing I found myself incredibly bored. If you want an RTS game similar to Age of Empires, Stronghold, Settlers, etc.. do not purchase this game.

TL DR: Graphic eye candy in exchange for the games soul and feeling, coulda been great but ai and wierd mechanics hold it back. Copy paste of company of heroes but not as epic.

This game is designed like complete and utter shit. The graphics are awesome, the music is decent, the voice acting is tolerable but the design of the game itself is so flawed it makes the game 1/10. Never ending waves of enemies just like spellforce. Theres even a mission where you can only use 5 units and have to beat a enemy who uses 10 oh and you cant build any towers, how fun it is to chase and rebuild every village. Also enemy can see entire map with no fog of war so have fun with it attacking you where you dont have spots defended or your ambush units in tall grass. Even if you end up taking them all the villages the enemy doesnt use resources, they just spam units Edit: which feels like playing insane on warhammer 1 with 4 full stack armies popping out of a minor city. Enemy doesnt use food but your units do so you can end up getting huge debuffs. Single player is braindead and requires cheesy tactics. I actually enjoyed the fact that units fight in melee until you retreat makes it feel strategic but i dont think this game has anyone playing online besides the few korean kids with 1000 elo and 2000 apm

10 unit limit? In a game with 6-7 different units? I get that some units have 20 units in it (i think) but scouts that i got to use were 3 little horsie bois, ballista or catapult is only 1 unit, takes up 1 whole slot for something that dies in 5 seconds facing off against a normal division. Says horses counter shieldguys.... Am i using the wrong horses or??? I even have them upgraded with armor and they still get destroyed. Repeated charges? Not really a counter then more of a dps. Gives russia horse archers but no druzhi(shock cav). Cav was huge part of warfare at this time and yeah sure you can get like 5 kills with a charge but i can do the same thing with zerkers or huskarls and not have to retreat after. edit: Maybe they meant germany to be the cav focus? seems a little imba both their infantry is anti cav too so i guess they great at fighting themselves lol

Every faction only has 6-7 units you can build, and they are all relatively the same with different abilities kinda lame.

Ballistas and catapults are also wierd as hell, only good in forest otherwise any ranged unit can snipe them easy, they def need more range or other ranged units just need less.

Is it worth 40$? Fuck no. Is it worth 10$? Hotdog diggity yeah

edit: Norse units/campaign sucks, was not fun, had a blast as anglo saxons and germans.

I think most people will play the beginning campaign with the Danish Vikings and give it a thumbs up. And it is by far the best one. But the rest of the campaigns fall flat for me and are just variations of the same typical sequences:

1. Build a base or burn down one and take a base
2. Build up a stockpile on resources until you have every upgrade
3. Capture Locations
4, Rock Paper Scissor skirmishes
...
5. just keep doing that

This formula gets really stale one after the other. I recently did the German story with Ottocar and was burnt out by the repetitive nature of each quest. It would cut to the next quest and I discovered I had to stockpile 1,000 resources...

oh god no....

You don't even understand why you do it. The narration provides some context but you have so many historical names and facitons that it isn't entirely clear why you are burning down villages in the first place.

Characters are forgettable and stale (except the viking one, I really liked the brothers dynamic for some reason). But maybe it can be tricky for developers to turn historical events into these hyper interesting stories with likeable characters.

People say graphics are great and I would disagree. For a strategy game where you need to manage multiple units in large battles and navigate a huge world map that clarity is vital. Just seems like there is not enough contrast between the environment and units. It's even worse at night time.

This reminds me alot of Battle for Middle-Earth with squad battles, but I would say the latter did a much better job overall.

It's a different game I guess. I'm sure the Viking weebs love this game. I might try one more campaign then shelve it.

Get it on sale like I did though.

This game scratches that itch that happens after binge watching Vikings over a weekend. It feels and looks great, has easy-to-understand controls and is altogether well developed.

However, it gets incredibly repetitive after only a few hours. There aren't enough units nor enough customization/advancement of them to really engage after a few hours, and almost every game comes down to just a few factors, each time.

If you want something to casually play and enjoy, this game might be for you. But for the price, and for what the game could be, I wouldn't recommend it.

This game looks good and does a great job at keeping historical accuracy and keeping the campaigns you play following the historical path without deviation. However, the most important part of a game should always be its gameplay and this game severely lacks it. With multiple 5 mission campaigns they all are essentially the same thing; build archer towers at settlements and have 1 or 2 archer units flank behind the AI army and kill them all when they fight only 2 of your high armor shield bearers. I'd say you know 100% of what you need to do to win every single fight without fail after playing 3 or 4 of the first campaign's missions. At this point I got the game for a low price and so I'm going to beat it, but even if this game was $5 I would say it wouldn't be worth it unless you plan on beating it throughout a few months and not playing everyday as I said before, the combat is extremely easy, mundane, and repetitive.

I have tried many games of this style, and I have never been able to enjoy them fully. This is no exception unfortunately, however It was much more enjoyable than other such games. and The historical setting was honestly refreshing, especially the DLC.

The graphics are great, and the story is enjoyable (the DLC is my favourite, because i find early Arab expansion really interesting) I hope tha they add more Byzantine stories in the future.

I can definitely see people enjoying this game but its just not for me.

It's a generic, mediocre, RTS game. You have a pre-set base which spawns units that you can upgrade and then it's rock paper scissors. The campaign design is bad (Example: an army of hundreds decided that instead of fighting and defending a wall, they would jump out of houses as you walked by them, ambushing you with one or two squads at a time, waiting for you to heal and move on. Fighting with your entire army at once is for losers, amiright?), the voice acting is mediocre, the pathing is mediocre.... Many of the same type of game do everything better.

Also, it's not like total war as other reviews have said. You cannot make formations and units will not retreat from a fight unless you press a retreat button. 1 archer walks up to one enemy as you try to get in range to fight their archers? They are now all in melee unless you tell them to run a good 100 feet backwards first.

Play this if you want a story to go along with watching medieval fighting, or ran out of other good RTS games to play.

Pros:
+Top notch soundtracks.
+SP Campaign is very enjoyable with unique missions for each factions.
+The gameplay is quite similar to Company of Heroes but very fast paced.
+Graphics and animation are well detailed.
+Cinematic mode is a bonus for those who loves to screenshot.
+AI can be very smart and aggressive.

Cons:
-MP setup feels a bit bare bone and I can't change the maps and match setup in real time after I host the server.
-MP maps are lacking in my opinion.
-The unit models aren't historically accurate. Anglo-Saxons for look like Normans for some weird reason.
-Catapult is just overpowered and it is irritating.

A medieval COH. Plays well, and has some really cool animations- the synced combat and kill moves are on par if not better than Total War, and I must give them credit for letting us burn things down and butcher civilians in such a graphic manner- good fun.
I just wish that there was a way to actually see the unit stats- so I could determine which individual unit is better compared to another.
The only real negatives I can bring up are related to the campaigns. The voice acting and writing is very hit-or-miss, and there are some very tedious missions. There are also some historical inaccuracies- particularly with the Teutonic campaign (I believe that the devs are Polish though, so this is to be expected I guess).

Nice take on RTS with a gameplay comparable to Company of Heroes. The main difference is, that the resources come from villages, which need to be defended. Multiplayer matches are often quicker than in CoH. I like the early medieval setting.

Great single player campaing, lets you wishing for more. To be honest, mechanics were great and I'd definitely be into a game that explores these a bit more (like variation in formations, tramps and abilities).

Overall, the only complaint i have is that at times the camping seemed a bit repetitive, but more often than not i found myself having a blast. Would recommend it

TL:DR

Squad-based RTS with hero units so don't expect huge armies, you can control maximum 10 units (with some story restrictions now and then). Even if user-friendly with RTS newcomers, it requires a small shift in thinking and a different approach as compared to the usual RTS games, that is if you want to win all missions on normal or harder difficulty. Nevertheless, a good game on a scene where RTS games are so scarce.

PROS

- Five different campaigns with 5 nations (Vikings, Anglo-Saxons, Germans, Slavs and Saracens) with historically accurate narrative.
- Great story for each campaign if you care to listen it all.
- Smart unit skills and abilities.
- Good graphics and adequate soundtrack.
- Nice art design used for the cutscenes.
- Good combat mechanics for controlled units and upgrades that matter.
- Decent controls, it can be played with no problems on gamepad or with mouse and keyboard.
- Good skirmish options.
- Using the cinematic camera (zoom-in) you can see the action up-front and close.
- Overall, a nice gameplay experience.

CONS

- There is a big waiting time for resources to do the required upgrades. Because of that, you will find yourself at times tempted to leave the game in AFK mode, controlling only the vital nodes while waiting for the resources to pile-up.
- Most campaign maps are a bit too small.
- Not the best voice-acting around and the repetitive phrases used by all units feel like from an old, classic RTS.
- The tech-tree should have more upgrades in my opinion.
- Unless you learn to use quite often the RUN skill of your units (and control their whereabouts once they stopped running), there is no way of getting them out of combat for healing and you may soon find yourself without the military assets required to control the map or finish the mission.
- Not necessarily a negative, but you will very often find yourself playing hide and seek with the enemy AI, because while you capture a spot it will capture one back. To mitigate this you must be very, very good at units and terrain management.

Unfortunately once you played a few matches, you've played the game. Really no difference in the play cycle. I was hoping this would be the COH2-type it has been touted to be, but its really not. Looks and feels cool, but the combat is frustrating and a simple rock-paper-scissors game.

Fairly quick playing RTS instead of alot of units its a more squad based RTS kinda like wh40K 2 retribution was also hero units. There is nothing wrong with that but i wanted to point it out, because there is many different styles of RTS games. This isn't alot of units like c&c or a grand strategy style rts. With that said, I found it easy, first thing i done loaded up skirmish played a 6 player map 1 vs 1 against easy AI, i start there to see how hard a game is.

i stomped the ai like it was a cake walk. So easy was a bit to easy for me but someone new to rts might be a good place to start. This rts game is very simplified from research to unit abilities and upgrades. So indeed its more of an rts game meant to be played fast rather than say as turtle taking your time really no point to this. Typically I'm turtle play style slow on pushing units but usually build my defense first not really much defense building here sure there is some but not enough to truly play a turtle play style, better off just steam rolling pushing fast and taking control of as many towns as fast as possible.

Once you got 60% of control the map enemy burns out fast. i didn't even have to use siege unit to steam roll them lol but was easy AI I hope harder AI is harder. Though even easy AI did use siege weapon on me, i lost 1 town to it but i was already raiding its main base with maxed units so no loss when enemy on track to complete defeat. Sacrifice for the ultimate enemy defeat is war after all.

In the end I got this game for like 59 cent from a bundle i mean it's a steal for that absolutely! Plus it came with 6 other good games games, something most bundles can't really do pack in 7 nice games for $4. So act quickly maybe you can to here: https://www.fanatical.com/en/bundle/reaper-bundle-6

Probably the best medieval rts game I've ever played to date. It's basically a smaller scale total war game, but it's very newcomer friendly to players who are new to the rts genre compared to total war games. It has outstanding graphics (for an rts game), good gameplay mechanic, very satisfying battle animation (I feel immersed every single time when watching a battle using the zoom in cinematic mode), and it suprisingly has an amazing singleplayer historical campaign that has very good replay value.

As a casual rts player, it's a 9/10 from me cause I love the setting, and I just can't stop playing this game

This game is fun! it reminds me off Company of Heroes or Men of War: Assault Squad , with a smaller scale and numerous unit abilities. only in Medieval times. I can tell that the Developers at Destructive Creation made sure that they put a great deal of care and attention went into certain details and elements of this game, such as seeing units training at recruitment buildings or lying down to rest and recover their health, which I appreciate. The music is excellent, in my opinion it suites the genre and the setting of the game . I haven't played much multiplayer at this point so I can't speak to that experience, but the multiple campaigns, Really love the Skirmish battles overall enjoyable enough to me to recommend others who enjoy historically based RTS games to give this one a try.

Unless you're a big fan of the vikings theme, you probably won't care much for this game. It feels like an old school RTS but without any of the freedom or creativity those games made so appealing. You can't build where you want. You don't gather resources, but instead you only capture outposts for income. I thought the storyline seemed boring and gameplay felt tedious and mostly uninteresting.

The graphics are not bad though. I didn't enjoy it enough to play through more than one campaign. I did not experience any bugs in the roughly 7 hours I played it. I'd give it a 5/10 for lack of innovation, freedom, and creative immersion.

Contrary to the impressions many got from the awesome trailer for this game, it is actually an RTS rather than an action game, but fortunately I enjoy RTS games so I wasn't particularly disappointed. The gameplay resembles Company of Heroes or Men of War: Assault Squad more than it does Total War, with a smaller scale and numerous unit abilities. It's obvious to me that a great deal of care and attention went into certain details and elements of this game, such as seeing units training at recruitment buildings or lying down to rest and recover their health, which I appreciate. The campaign voice acting is less than stellar, but the music is excellent, in my opinion. I haven't played much multiplayer at this point so I can't speak to that experience, but the multiple campaigns, while a lacking overmuch in variety in my opinion, were enjoyable enough to me to recommend others who enjoy historically based RTS games to give this one a try.

Overall, I'd give it a 7 out of 10. I enjoyed the setting and the gameplay, but, though it is clear to me that some very talented and dedicated people worked on this game, it pales in comparison to other games in the genre.

I like how this game is centered about good micromanagement, since you can have 10 units max. It reminds me of Company of Heroes series. There are four single player campaigns loosely inspired by historical events. You can play as Vikings, Anglo-Saxons, Holy Roman Empire and Slavs but don't expect dramatic difference... you'll use similar units, build similar structures and use similar skills. Economics are pretty simple - you need to capture settlements, wait until peasants gather resources, expand your main base and recruit an army (up to ten squads). Combat is nice but somewhat slow. I liked that you can flank enemy units and break their morale. Each type of unit has it's strengths and weaknesses For those who like strategy its really enjoying game.

im very happy about this game , have great solo campaign , good solo gameplay

yes , the campaign story is very great

i am happy because this RTS game cared about solo gameplay , im happy because this game is not an online PVP RTS game

For RTS game , if this game excessively concerned the PVP mode and reduce solo game experience , all only PVP mode , in this time , its a truly Dead End

this time , more players wanna have a good solo game experience , they wanna enjoy the game , they wanna relax , not pressure , and i think they dont want play a rts game long time with intensive concentration , and not many players can only play this game , if they cant play what they want , they will leave this game

they wanna see a truly war battlefiled , they wanna enjoy the battlefield effect of the game , they wanna see more interesting and vivid battlefield details

but PVP mode will destroy these details , or even with these details , but players now in high concentration then they will miss these details

so if you want play a good solo campaign story and good skirmish medieval age RTS , buy this game

Ahem. I don't actually play a lot of RTS games, but this one seems really promising. Usually, I can't really get over how uninviting the game is, even though (I assume) it probably has a lot to offer once you get over the hurdles. Not so with this one - it grabs you from the start with great visuals and stunning narrative and artwork, combined with awesome music. So awesome, in fact, that it remininded me of The Wither 3. Lo and behold, the guy behind this game's soundtrack also worked on the Witcher 3 one. I also suspect the story/intro artist was the one who worked on The Witcher 3, but I haven't been able to confirm that. Either way, this game is made addictive and atmospheric by absolute top talent, and the actual gameplay is great, even if it is familiar to playes of games like Company of Heroes.

https://waywardstrategy.com/2020/02/28/ancestors-legacy-well-considered-brutality/

Before I’d ever played Ancestor’s Legacy, I’d heard it described as ‘medieval Company of Heroes’. I find this description to be a little inaccurate. There are some similarities, such as squad-based units and a wealth of active abilities including analogs for mine-laying, but it doesn’t really capture the whole flavor of the game. For me, Ancestor’s Legacy (my hands keep typing Ancestory and it’s absolutely murdering me) is the bastard child of Total War’s tactical battles and Company of Heroes.

When it comes down to it, there’s a specific feeling involved in fighting in Total War. Giant squads stand in a blob and plink away at at each other, slowly winnowing down their numbers as specialists wreak havoc in specific areas of the battlefield. This is very different to how positional combat is in Company of Heroes, and the speed at which squads and tanks can melt away under fire. In Company of Heroes, cover is king and things can do down fast and hard in a way they don’t really in Total War (at least, in my experience. But I’m a relative novice to Total War games and have only started to gain an appreciation for them in recent years).

In Ancestor’s Legacy, you have a bit of both. Basic fighters entangle in melee and tend to just… sit there, beating on each other. Combat ‘lock’s a troop in, meaning there’s little maneuvering possible once a squad has engaged.

The initial hit where squads meet is highly important, as many infantry abilities tend to happen on approach: charges, flanking (an important status effect that can REALLY speed up how quickly a squad dies), axe-throwing, that sort of thing all tend to happen right at the initial encounter. A pinch of COH and a dash of Total War. It takes a bit of getting used to, and status effects can be frustratingly unclear, but once I got used to it, I started appreciating the system a lot more.

I could go on about combat for a long time. During battle, things slow down a bit, but the fun and skill in setting up that initial engagement is highly entertaining. Throwing axes while charging, setting up ambushes, traps… that’s just the start of it. Because if you’re smart, you can game the system.

Ancestor’s Legacy features a dual-stage retreat function unique to the game. The first press of retreat, the unit disengages from combat and runs about a screens-length back toward the player’s base. If you retreat AGAIN, you get the standard, Relic-inspired full retreat. That alone adds a lot of depth to combat, especially when you factor in how important engaging (or in this case, re-engaging) can be to battle. There’s a lot of counterplay to clashing, and a lot of it comes from dictating the terms of each engagement.

In a lot of ways, it feels mechanically and functionally akin to unit maneuvering in Warcraft 3: running a squad out of melee then ducking them back in to maintain their DPS and allow another target to start soaking up damage. But in Ancestor’s Legacy, there’s the benefit of having a consistent system for getting the most out of squads, as well as the advantage of being able to re-engage and use those on-approach abilities again.

Overall, combat gets great marks for me. It’s deep and has a lot of nuance, fun edges to play around with to get the advantage over your opponent. You just have to be patient and push through till you’re presented with all the pieces (speaking about the campaign here).

Another thing: the tactical aspect of the game are remarkably clear. This was a breath of fresh air for me after feeling like I’m flailing to understand the ‘under the hood’ systems in games like Battlefleet Gothic: Armada 2 or Steel Division 2. Once you’re inside of the game’s logic there’s not really anything that’s hidden or obscured, and it’s possible to just focus on getting the most out of your squads. Even the tradeoffs for armor (armored squads move slower, leaving them more vulnerable to ranged units and to take additional attrition while on approach to the enemy) and upgrades are very clear and understandable.

One last note: The unit veterancy system is very well done. Units can choose a specialization as they level with clearly defined pros and cons. Extra speed, extra defense, extra attack. It’s a lot more interactive and feels more meaningful than veterancy systems in C&C3 or Company of Heroes (personally. There’s good cases both ways: in COH2, it’s really clear how a squad of a given veterancy level will behave in combat. This leaves it a bit more ambiguous to the players).

Had high hopes for this game that it would be something more than a Company of Heroes wannabe.

Although the atmosphere is very nice and the music is excellent, these factors do not redeem the game, as the most important aspect, the gameplay, is pretty bad.

Haven't played any PVP, just part of the campaigns and some skirmish matches.

Units do not obey your commands consistently, as if there is rubberbanding in their movement and the path finding sometimes leaves much to be desired.
Abilities have no tooltip to properly explain how they work, throwing axes for example cannot be used in combat and you need to time the use just right when charging an enemy.
Combat is slow and clunky (though I do agree that the combat animations are pretty cool), one enemy unit can pin your entire army if your units are bunched up and they charge you.
The campaign missions are pretty forgettable, some have very annoying mechanics that make me wonder what was going through the heads of the developers when they designed them.

Though this isn't early access, it pretty much feels like an unfinished game.
Some of the in-game art, tooltips, text and icons don't fit in with the style/aesthetic of the game or are very simplistic (like placeholders), as if they were tossed in at the last moment and left there to this day.
The game's so-called manual is a joke, it does not go in depth with unit stats, just a basic rock-paper-scissors explanation.
In the two years since it came out it hasn't been revised mechanics wise.

Oh and watch out, if you patch the game it will break all saves, so tough luck if you were planning on progressing in a mission, you need to start over.

Overall not a completely horrible game, but it's not worth the 30 euros price, better wait for a sale (at least half price, or better still 75% - 80% off).

I rate the game 4 out of 10.

Game mechanics are interesting, but all the tactical possibilities go out the window because of the horribly tedious campaign mission design. Linear missions, surprise enemy reinforcements (or allies turning on you), constant pestering with one or two squads by a lobotomised AI, go burn one of their buildings, retreat to reinforce, rinse and repeat. Most of the missions I played give you these incredibly cramped spaces to fight in, where it's really difficult to maneuver to the flanks, so most fights devolve into blobs of units fighting each other until one side retreats. I'd go on but I'll stop here.

If you like the setting and aren't interested in the campaign, it's passable at most. It's really a shame as the music, graphics and base mechanics are well executed. But in the end it's just incredibly bland and frustratingly repetitive.

I have given this game several tries but it just too frustrating to play. The AI is unhampered by fog of war so they will always attack you from places you can't see. While your units will not attack and will run blindly at the enemy they cant see.
Units barely respond to commands, most of the time responding seconds after orders are issued. Cavalry will run through troops ignoring them.
The AI teammate I had stopped playing halfway through a game, leaving all units piled up in one location.
It's a frustrating mess that feels like a terrible Company of Heroes mod that is halfway finished.

I thought I knew what average was until this day.

Now, I like what this game is going for, but I'd be hard pressed to think of this store page as anything other than dishonest.
The screenshots are more reflective of the game than the trailers, unless I'm missing something and the game was intended to be played 95% of the time zoomed in.
No, the majority of this game isn't hard core closeups of epic viking battles.
This game is bursting at the seams to give you flashy fighty gameplay, when underneath, this is the most standard RTS I've played in a while.

You'd boot into it and see that call of duty into, and you're all like OOOOOH. And then the UI loads up and then it sets in. You've wandering into a giant kale swamp. Nothing is distinct. Picking out your troops is a nightmare. Fear not, click your squad of raiders and right click the enemy to deal damage.

And just like that you've created a giant moshpit of vikinghowl.wav. You see those pixels shuffling at eachother? Thrilling right?
Don't forget to zoom into the battle and witness motion sickness like you've never seen. We made the camera shake like crazy because it's a battle, you pringis.
What if you made any of this have impact? The total war games have this in spades because they're confident enough to rely on the elegance of simple design rather than just piling things together.
It's a good thing the game outright labels when troops are getting flanked or overwhelmed or when a warrior dies, because I'd never be able to figure that on my own. This game is muddy. Brutally, unabashedly muddy.

I'd commend this game for taking a squad approach to units, but again, none of that matters. What makes Urjog the terrible any more recognizable than any of the other shmoes in my spearman unit? A different portrait on the army bar? This game is so loose and intangible that it feels like your decisions have no significance outside of charging and retreating. You aren't starcraft. You aren't total war. You aren't company of heroes. You aren't age of empires. You're a mechanical chimera wearing a viking hat.

The sad part of all of this is that this game is fine. This game works. It's alright. I just recognize the lost potential here.
So, why play this game over any other strategy game that's better than average?

This game is like a medieval Company of Heroes. I'm surprised it's not pulling at least 20,000 players tbqh. It's a very well made game, with great mechanics, different armies and one of the better RTS out there. I would put it in league with Age of Empires, Total War and Company of Heroes in terms of finish. I truly hope the player base sticks with this one because I will. This game is a classic.

A Very nice RTS in a time where they are few and far between. Thoroughly enjoying the campaigns.

The limited number of maps for a Skirmishes are very repetitive. wouldn't be so bad if they were double the size or more.

I would also like to see an option to increase overall game speed as some of the gameplay is very tedious.

Recommended.

Do you like playing Company of Heroes 2, but are constantly disappointed by its lack of vikings and medieval siege weaponry?

Then this is the game for you!

Lacks serious game balance once you have finished the first two campaigns. Just becomes aggravating facing a constant RNG fest.

the single player campaign is ok but the ai is is so stupid in skirmish so i played 3v3 and my allies act like a hive mind they are always together ,no flanking and they cant even cap points consistently they only focus on the one side of the map and cant even capture whats infront of their base they always go to the bottom both of them so top of the map has no defense its irritating

this game is ok just for the campaign but if you expect a good skirmish this game will not satisfy you the ai is stupid and the maps are few thats why nobody is playing

very few maps and even fewer units to choose from. like people say it's like a company of heros mod. it's a good mod but barely a game. no dev support either, i think it's been abandoned. It would be a great game if it wasn't lacking content so hard.

This game is more basic without the learning curve many games of this type have. However, that doesn't mean it's any easier or any less fun. I actually find even the easy mode to be difficult and require a lot of strategy. There are a generous amount of campaigns and skirmish modes and I enjoy it.

Got this game in a Bundle.
Decided to try it out, even though I don't like the real time strategy genre.
I still don't like the genre but I could believe somebody who does, might enjoy this game.
For me, playing a horde of plundering and murdering vikings was fun enough for a few hours.

Never have I played a game where your units feel more sticky.
If ONE unit in a squad engages with an enemy, you can no longer issue commands to the squad. Unless it is to retreat.

Which is frustrating because it means when you have 3 squads attacking 2 squads, you cant move one squad back and around to flank the enemy. Which is silly because flanking matters! But no, your units very poorly auto attack, refuse to listen to any given commands, and slowly fight until one by one they are whittled down, or you retreat.

So you cant crash enemy infantry with calvary and then have the calvary charge away to round in a second time. Because if 1 calvary unit gets too close, all of them stop, and slowly approach the enemy. PATHETIC!

Essentially all the tactics that this game is supposed to implement, makes you unable to implement them unless you swing incredibly wide around the enemy. You dont get to do any retreat so the enemy follows you into an ambush either. The retreat direction is somewhat random. So if you want to have 1 squad run away and lead the enemy into a hillside of archers in wait, it probably wont work...

Even if it did, your archers would get 1 shot off, and then slowly approach the enemy on foot to engage in melee combat. And you cant redirect them because they've stopped listening to your orders.

The main menu theme (Hear Our Call) is amazing, in complete words perfection in music. Such an amazing game and pretty nice immersion.

I haven't tried the campaign i brought it mainly to play with my friends online which was fun for about 2 games, then we found the AI very tiresome.

- Unit variety is shallow, all races feel the same with maybe 1 different type each.
- Building doesn't really exist you just build 3 buildings in pre-set locations.
- Few Maps.
- 4 Race's but all feel pretty much the same.
- Limited custom games, 3v3/2v2/1v1 (cant really do 2v1 without being at a INSANE disadvantage)
- Games drag on after 20 mins it becomes more of a slug fest just to end the game.
- Every game follows the exact same cycle, take the closest village, then the 2nd, stalemate, one side loses a village, game over..
- Maximum 10 troops per player..
- Very expensive for the content.

+ Fights are cool, Graphically done a great job.
+ Bodies remain there which makes the game feel quite epic when you see the battlefield after a good scrap.
+ Day & Night cycle and vision are cool mechanics not commonly used in RTS

The single player campaign will get you 20-30 hours of gameplay which is pretty decent. The infantry gameplay is a little to reliant on the paper-rock-scissors format, but it's not awful.
Overall, I quite enjoyed it. Although, I'm not sure if I would recommend it at full price. One of the more solid rts games to come out in a while. I do feel that the game is worth getting.

Definitely recommended for fans of RTS, we need more good RTS lately.

+RTS style similar to the Warhammer RTS or Company of Heroes
+Good graphics with zoom options to go right into the action if you want
+4 campaigns (~3-5 hrs each) with a good variety of units.
+Difficulty is reasonable, some strategic thinking needed
+Voice acting for hero units and story through cinematic artwork
+Unit skill and armor upgrades, specializations on veterency
+Easy resource management

-Placement for building construction is pre-set only
-Some battles can drag on, especially with bottlenecks or lots of units
-Low unit/squad caps
-No multiplayer

Nice RTS based on capturing resource points with excellent soundtrack.

Missions are interesting and varied with historical background (did not check how true to reality), from a not often visited setting and with several unique nations.

Game is polished, did not encounter any bugs. Expect tens of hours of nice RTS fun. Did not play multiplayer, so no opinion on that.
