Baby-Horror?

Fazit:

Great thing shown here is how an infant can try to interpret behavior of parents, their problems and arguments using just a small experience and knowledge about life.
Nobody is perfect, life situations can be not strictly good and bad, but more complex.
And when young family decides to have a children, already having problems in their relationship - this often leads to trauma for the kid.
I like such indie games, because they can ask hard, serious questions. And can show the consequences of our possible errors.
I enjoyed Among the Sleep. And can recommend you to do the same :)

2. Playability 10/10 (The dynamics of the game is in the first person. The character movement is guided according to the children movement ability, crawling and slow walking. The game consists of exploration and solving some simple puzzles to progress through the story. And each object for the puzzle, in reality, is an important object with a sentimental charge. It has a meaning. There is also a visual narrative through drawings that show the emotional states between the little boy and his mother. These drawings allow a better understanding of the story. The character can interact with some objects and his teddy is our storyteller. A narrator who will tell us what to do in such situations, how to overcome an obstacle, as well as the implicit meaning of the objects to open doors. The adventure is a learning of the character and an experience of what he lives.)
3. Music and FX 9/10 (The soundtrack is composed of ambient music. Dark ambient sounds accompanied by drone ambient. Music often creates tension and mystery. Other times it appears as if it were all a dream. We'll not listen to lullabies, but rather a dark form of the tension of the little boy experience. Sound variations of objects, creatures, ambient tones. Like the surreal sound of the saxophone like the cries of his mother or brief sounds of the chimes of the bell accompanied by a background of rain sound. Music offers impressions of things and scenarios. Each thing and object has its music. The feeling that the developers have created with the music, is the involvement of the varied sounds and accompanied by the narration and the essential moments of the character. Variation of tensions from calm to anxiety. All those variations capture our impressions, as well as the image and the narrative. Music is the representation of the little boy experience and according to how he sees around him in his situation. The music also narrates his adventure.)
4. Duration 9/10 (Unfortunately, the story is short. But it's a story with a solid narrative structure. The journey is linear, but with the possibility of exploration. A prologue was added, where it indicates the way to play and an introduction to the story: a winter before the separation of the son with the mother. One can start with the prologue to get acquainted with the plot and dynamics of the game. Know the boy perspective and how he understands his home from his point of view. The game offers a different perspective, how children see everyday life.)
Recommendation: 10/10

It's a pretty straightforward horror game - get from point A to point B and back again, with nothing but jump scares in between. But the environment is genuinely surreal, and I love it. There's nothing more terrifying than wandering around, only to turn the corner and see one of the baddies lumbering towards you. Playing as an infant gives you a neat sense of scale that's only built upon by the otherworldly environment.
So, if you're looking for a neat horror game, or just happen to like shitting your pants, Among the Sleep is absolutely worth a playthrough.

The story really should be experienced spoiler-free, so I'm not gonna go into it, but it's definitely a scary game, with interesting art design and a very creepy atmosphere. You play as a 2-year-old and see the world and the horror through the eyes of a child, which allows for some really interesting locations and terrifying monster-design.
It is rather short (around 2 1/2 hours) and doesn't overstay its welcome.

The heavy subject matter is married perfectly into the game world. Sound design is impressive. Perfect length too. The only downside I can think if, replaying it again in 2021 after playing it first time in 2015, is a certain character model and the occasionally clunky controls.
The added contents, achievements and tweaks were most welcome. Made me replay this gem and remember why it's so incredibly good.

The story starts with a toddler and his mother celebrating his birthday.
They are about to eat his birthday cake when they get disturbed by someone knocking on the door.
Things start to get grim and he gets scared when he hears her yelling towards that person.
Eventually she returns with a big gift box with a teddy bear inside, which becomes his new best friend.
At night he wakes up because his bear is getting taken away so he decides to climb out of bed to go find it.
Its dark, the house looks terrifying and his mother is missing now too.
After reuniting with his teddy bear they agree on exploring the sinister home on the hopes of finding her.
Solve puzzles and explore a surreal environment that feels like a dream world,
accompanied with your teddy who guides and comforts you.
You also need to hide from a terrifying monster that haunts you while you try to collect items that represent memories associated with your mother.
The atmosphere is perfectly executed, it looks like a twisted world and it feels very tense.
I have to say that this game is very dear to my heart, it was very emotional and I had a hard time writing a review for it because whenever I think about the game it reminds me of my own past.
The ending makes so much sense and the story is truly heartbreaking.
In all honesty, I don't think my words can do it any justice and describe how amazing this game truly is.
But for me it's an unforgettable experience, that touched me deeply and left me speechless.

But other than that the game is quite glitchy walking on toys and getting tossed over to the other side of the room, i fell off the map 2 times just in the void, the ghost was gonna stuck if it was hunting you and there was one piece of wood or a corner so that would make it stop
other than that the game is pretty intense and creepy story also still recommended but for a low price

+ the story is very good
+ the way it's conveyed is original but also impactful
+ the characters are nice and the voice acting is great
- the save feature is THE WORST. Seriously, I lost like an hour of progress because of it.
- some parts are just not explained to you at all. like how doing certain actions will kill you or trigger the monster
- the camera can be shakey and I've gotten stuck a few times and had to hard reset
- the audio is super unnecessary at times. it doesn't need it to be scary, so there's no reason for the ear-rape at some points
Overall, the goods outweigh the bads, but they are still a big issue.

Among the sleep is not quite your average horror game and is something beautiful.
First of all, allow me to say that you play as a little baby and come on how cute is that? :) Secondly, this game is a journey you have to experience for yourself if wanna recall how your imagination was like because we all know kids have a wonderful imagination and I am sure you had too as a kid. I sure had a crazy one as a kid and that's why I enjoyed it so much because of the dreams you explore so if you too wanna recall what that was like having crazy dreams and a wild imagination then Among the Sleep is nostalgia for you. Thirdly, You have a bear named teddy and I am sure we all had a protector against the dark as kids so that's probably something you can relate to as well.
Remember that spooky monster you were so afraid of as a kid? Among The Sleep captures the nightmares I rememeber somewhat as well as a kid and I also used to be scared of the dark and the creepy monsters in my bedroom as a child but Among The Sleep is actually much more than just a spooky horror game and behind it lies a very relatable story I found myself quite invested in but you will understand what I am talking about once you play it as I don't really wanna give away too many spoilers. Among The Sleep is a story I enjoyed for the narrative and themes as I found the story really good and honestly didn't expect it to be anything more than just a horror game. The monster here I will just talk about briefly as I feel it would be giving away too many spoilers if I talked about it too much but the monster to put it short is very nicely created and reflects this kid's childhood fears perfectly but also translates perfect into the reality this kid lives in so to put it short the design they gave the monster is great and I feel it tells you a lot about it just by looking at it in the game. Once you reach the conclusion to the game you will see the real true monster you have been hiding from and also come to realize what made it a monster. I am glad I finally got around to play it as I actually remember following this game when it was early in development and I do remember thinking at the time that it had potential and it sure had. A great game I highly recommend you check out if you like horror or if you are new to horror because it's not that jumpscare heavy or scary in my opinion but it captures the nightmares we had as kids perfectly and the imaginations we had in our childhoods. I do need to say that the game is pretty short and probably won't take you more than maybe 2 hours if you know where to go but it's the narrative or nostalgia there will keep you invested here so it's fine for what it is in my opinion.

However, what little I did see of the game looks intriguing- playing from the perspective of a toddler, dealing with life in what seems to be a troubled family without the capacity to truly understand the situation or do anything about it. I really feel like this would be an interesting game if only I could play it. This is why I'm recommending the game even though I was able to put so little time into it. I imagine I'll revisit this title in bits and pieces, but it's unfortunately largely unplayable for me.

The story for the game is also a great concept, and without spoiling much, provides a good explanation for the horror aspects this child is exposed to. I'm still unsure why the teddy bear is sentient, but I suppose I'll chalk that up to the overactive imagination of a toddler.
This was one of the first-person horror games I forced myself to play. It was not overly scary, and thankfully very limited in its jumpscares. If you're looking for a tamer horror game to get you into the genre, go for this one.

The Good:
Krillbite absolutely nails the world building and mechanics, making everything huge and out of reach. Even the most basic actions like walking over a small step requires you to press a button and climb it.
Hugging the teddy bear gives off a faint light to help you navigate a little better, but prevents you from performing any other action (except walking of course). Moreover, by making crawling faster than walking, you are required to choose whether to prioritise speed or visibility.
Overall, without going into too much detail, the devs did a great job making the player feel powerless.
The Bad:
This game is really just a story you are carried through. The world is extremely linear and there is no real challenge.
On the other hand, the controls are quite frustrating a times. Climbing over objects isn't always smooth, opening doors (which is by far he most common action) could have been made easier to perform.
In conclusion, a very interesting idea that I wish would have been developed a little further. This is, however, a great title to introduce a non-gamer to the survival horror genre.

- Innovative story and scope of a game (A two year old!)
- Nice use of childhood fears into gameplay features
- Dark environments and ambient sound makes for a scary game
- Realistic movement for a two year old
- Simple puzzles, the likes of what a two year old could solve
- Interesting story that touches rarely spoken issues
- Easy achievements
- Looks pretty good for such dark game
- Art style is on point with the objective
- Has a museum with lots of artwork, ingame models and extras
Cons:
- I had textures and models pop in and out of existence
- I had the terrain completely disappear from me once
- I had a bug with a sound being played indefinitely
- Game crashed on exiting it
- Auto saves that don't really save your progress, nice
- Game is surprisingly graphics intensive...
- Extremely short play time, 4 hours while doing everything
- Expensive for the play time you'll get out of it
- Extremely easy, I finished the game without dying once!!
- I only saw one of the 4 enemies, this is how easy it is!
- Apparently, Teddy was always your friend from the beginning
- Teddy's introduction makes it look like the obvious enemy
- Story's cohesion to gameplay and maps is non-existent
- Many game elements seem totally random
- Walking simulator
Verdict: Expensive and short, high quality but low enjoyment, original but dull. It's a half-good game that unfortunately fails on the most important parts, fun and engagement. I was gifted this game, but if I had bought it, I would consider that I had made a serious mistake. It's not worth it. Good, but not good enough. I consider 2$ the most you should pay for this experience, and still, not sure it's worth playing at all.

All things considered, Among the Sleep isn't a bad walking simulator, but if you're not a megafan of the genre or if you have plenty of good walking sims in your backlog, you're good and can safely skip this one. This conlusion, coupled with the fact that the regular price for this game is just plain ridiculous for such a short experience, made me decide to not recommend Among the Sleep.
Story
Since I want to avoid spoilers, I can't talk about the story, as the entire story can be perfectly written out in one short sentence.
Suffice it to say the developers have created a world for you to explore, which they believe may represent how a 2-year-old would interpret certain actions by his parents that don't make any sense to a toddler.
Gameplay
Gameplaywise, Among the Sleep is a run-of-the-mill walking simulator, although maybe I should say crawling simulator because the toddler's walking speed is very slow, whereas his crawling speed is an acceptable speed to not get annoyed by slow movement speed, which some short walking simulators use as a way to artificially increase playtime.
You have to find your way through the game, which is divided into four chapters. Each chapter has a slightly different type of setting, with everyday objects sometimes looking eerie from the perspective of a 2-year-old.
The puzzling aspect of the game is limited to finding your way in the (mostly dark) game world or finding a keylike object needed to continue. So I don't have a clue what the promise of 'enhanced puzzles' in the developers' description of the enhanced edition means.
Often, you're required to interact with objects by clicking and dragging, for example to open doors or move a chair to a cupboard so you can climb the chair and then climb onto the cupboard. The game handles these interactions in a very clunky way and therefore they often get frustrating to perform. Sometimes I saw an object I thought I should climb onto but my gurgling avatar refused. After looking around for a while and finding no alternatives, I went back to the same object and found out I was supposed to climb it, but it only works when I face the object from a certain angle.
In the second half of the game, you'll sometimes encounter a ghost/wraith/spectre that you need to avoid or it's game over. This is a mechanic that a lot of walking simulators use to add a horror element to the game. While I've come to hate games that only revolve around avoiding a 'game over monster', its sporadic use in the case of Among the Sleep didn't bother me at all. The only time the creep actually caught me was when I got stuck due to a clipping issue. I got stuck several times while playing Among the Sleep, even when I was two minutes in, and the only way to solve that situation is by reloading, which means restarting the chapter or a large part of it.
I'm glad Among the Sleep allows the player to rebind the controls. You can also adjust mouse look speed, which definitely is a welcome option because I found the standard mouse look speed ridiculously fast, something which a lot of players have written in reviews and on the forums. I'm glad I didn't need to fiddle around with my mouse's dpi settings, which would have discouraged me and maybe I wouldn't have bothered to play the game at all.
Graphics and sound
Since the developers boast that the enhanced edition of their game has 'improved graphics', I would not have wanted to play the previous edition of Among the Sleep. I definitely don't consider wonderous graphics one of the main requirements to enjoy a game, but Among the Sleep's graphics are basic and often even crude. Animations aren't very smooth either.
The soundtrack is a much better aspect of Among the Sleep. I don't remember hearing any music, so either it was forgettable or there wasn't any, but the constant eerie ambient sounds and creepy sound effects are great and they add a lot of atmosphere to an otherwise mediocre experience, which is probably the main reason why this game doesn't completely feel like it deserves a 'not worth playing' tag. Though I do understand that some people have an issue with the game constantly playing eerie ambient sounds, even when there is no danger at all.
On Steam's extra features
Among the Sleep has 6 Steam Trading Cards. You'll get 3 while running the game.
For me, the Steam Achievements turned out to be a necessary addition to Among the Sleep. Six of them require you to find a collection of drawings that are scattered throughout each chapter. This meant I had some sort of goal the whole time besides simply crawling and climbing towards the finish line. I don't think I would have finished this game without its Steam Achievements, which is something I don't think I've ever felt before. I'll also add here that this game has zero replayability as far as I'm concerned, especially after having unlocked all of the achievements.
Besides the collectibles, there are three achievements that require you to perform some completely optional tasks in the game and one final achievement is awarded for completing the game, bringing the total to 10 achievements.

The game is pretty short (2-3 hours) depending on how fast you can find the items you need for certain areas. I'd recommend this game for those wanting to explore games that include 3D exploration, light puzzle-solving, light-horror, platform, story-rich.
