Do not worry about the monsters in the game, simple stealth will easily get through them. The puzzles in the game were not too hard but some of the puzzles could have been a bit more obvious.
A must play for any horror fans!

This game instills true fear. I played this back in 2012 and decided to experience the terror again. Graphically, it is outdated compared to today's standard but everything else more than makes up for it. The atmosphere, story, music, narration, sanity mechanic and the constant unrelenting feeling of dread and complete helplessness all play a huge part in keeping you on edge for the entire journey. Is your mind playing tricks on you or is it? Did you really see what you thought you did? That is your sanity taking it's toll. Question it if you must, but know, it is the only thing you have as you descend deeper and deeper into Castle Brennenburg.
Masterpiece. Must for any horror fan.

---{ Detailed Comment Notes }---
Before i hit the mid point of the story it was quite stressing dealing with the lack of oil but as soon as i started to understand the mechanics of the game and also how the AI can be either predictable or just out right dumb programmed the game became very easy sadly. Once you know the horror element really became lacking and so i became way less scared at times i did get scared but it was less often once i knew.
The objectives to the game to progress though the story can sometimes be quite hard to know what to do, i got stuck few times but it was mostly at the puzzles this happened to me, yes this game has some puzzles you will have to do to progress, some will even have audio cues and yes this whole game relys mostly with the monster at least will use audio cues to help you, so have an ear out for sounds cause it can save you a death or just help you towards the end.
The story starts of kinda meh imo at first didn't find it pulling me into its tale, but once you go deeper from the around ground level of the building you be in, only then the story really starts to picks up and i found myself more intrigued on what was going on with Daniel and why this was happening etc, so give the story some slack at the start, it can be kinda bad and boring to listen to but trust me it will pay off the more you progress so listen up.
I only had two bugs. One i fell out of the map into the void of the map, something about jumping on a barrel with the water monster chase near the door caused me to pop out the map. Two the monster pushed a barrel that smacked me and then i was stuck between the wall and a barrel and also the monster hitting me so yeah no exit death, it was quite a unfair death but, had to take the beating to restart, so yes, i had a nice close up look at that big jaw he has.
Old pewdiepie is right, barrels are evil!! As they have both caused me problems in this game either out of the map or letting the monster trap me to kill me.
The custom stories you can download are the real high points for buying this game, they always seem to be quite better then the main story imo lot more fun and bigger scares and terror awaits most of the custom made maps.

The Horror Experience that defined a Generation
This game is what introduced me into the Horror game genre.
This is exactly what you'd want from a horror title, not only cheap jump scares but an immersive experience through sound, atmosphere and sanity that effects your gameplay.
You are always on edge but most of the games played are the ones in your mind, creating things that are not might not even be there and it’s because the game is designed so well that it makes you think things are going to happen without forcing it upon you. Except when theres an actually Monster, then it gets pretty real.
Challenging Puzzles that do guide you through the use of notes but miss one related to a puzzle and enjoy spending hours trying everything or going back and forth areas thinking you've missed something (or Google, that works to).

This is a foundational horror game experience. Similar to everything released in the genre since-- but strikingly unlike anything you've played before.
I would recommend this game to each and every person, fan of the horror genre or not.
It is an old game so wait for a discount-- but it is almost always on discount somewhere.

Game-play:
Amnesia's base game offers a very strong horror experience, which in my opinion still holds up today. The game does a very good job of getting you immersed in its dark grisly world, and then proceeding to scare the crap out of you until you feel as broken as Daniel. Honestly it's hard to complete in one sitting, it personally took me 3 weeks to finish it my first time back in 2014. The story is a bit hard to grasp if you are rushing through the game, but if you take your time to look for and read notes, you'll find it much easier to understand.
The environments in Amnesia is one of the main reasons why it is so scary. The dark, sometimes disturbing locations, the ambiance, the anticipation for anything to jump out at you, it's perfect.
Having to manage sanity and oil can be a little bit tedious at times, but if you are careful to light up areas, and conserve oil you'll probably be fine.
The puzzles in amnesia are sometimes a little weak, but it doesn't really have to much of an impact on the overall game-play I feel.
Custom stories (the best part):
This is in my opinion the main reason to get this game, and the reason for my egregiously long playtime. Custom stories are community made mods for amnesia, allowing people to basically make their own horror games using the medium of amnesia. It's a joy to see what people come up with, and experience the stories they wish to tell. There are countless custom stories out there, and I'll provide a list of my recommendations at the end of this review.
Game files:
This is a little bonus thing I find fun to mess around with sometimes. All of amnesia's files are able to be edited, such as configuration files, audio files, images etc. meaning you can customize almost everything about the game. You can replace music with songs from another game, make monsters speak, make it so your lantern doesn't consume oil and emits blue light, you can even give Daniel a different voice, the possibilities are endless.
I strongly recommend making backups of any files you are going to edit
If you are going to replace audio files, I recommend using audacity to convert your sounds to .ogg
if you are going to replace images, I personally just use an online converter so you don't have to pay to convert to .tga
Config files are easy to edit, you just need any text editor.
Also, your changes will carry over to any custom stories you have as well
My custom story recommendation list:
Some of my favorite custom stories, you can find them all on moddb
Must plays:
The ones you’ve just gotta play
Amadeus – Your brother is stolen, and you must find him.
Wow, just wow. The quality this custom story offers is unrivaled. Definitely a must play.
Simulacrum – A monk journey’s to “The Spout.”
One of my personal favorites. The story is a bit difficult to understand but the game-play is great, with unique puzzles and environments. love it.
Destiny Rebellion/Destiny Revenant – A man attempts to change his destiny.
Play these two if you are looking for a unique experience you won't get from any other custom story.
The Great Work – You stumble across an orb fragment, and get roped into things much bigger than you.
Great, easy to understand story with unique puzzles and good game-play.
Five magics – You seek to stop someone from abusing the orb’s power.
If you enjoyed The Great Work, you'll enjoy this too.
Final Revelations (Remastered) - You attempt to uncover the mystery of the Crusader’s.
If you are looking for a good custom story with a long playtime, this is for you. It introduces many new features such as NPCs, shops, a morality system, day/night, and much more.
Key to Freedom – You are offered freedom in exchange for a key, deep within a manor.
Just an overall great custom story.
Amnesia: Rain – You awake trapped within a castle, and must escape.
Loved the story, and the twist at the end.
The Subconscious Trials – You are offered 500,000 dollars to participate in a medical trial.
Good story, good game-play. Nice.
Those Who Were Forgotten – You are tossed into the sewers as punishment for crimes you didn’t commit
Heavily underrated in my opinion. Good puzzles and atmosphere, good voice acting, good story, the only issue really is the very difficult to get good ending, but you can find a guide for it in the custom stories files if you are having trouble.
A Late Night Drink – You grab a drink, late at night.
The one everybody knows. Very good.
Highly recommended:
If you’re still itching for more here are some goodies (for length I will only be including descriptions)
Followed By Death Trilogy – You wake up to your wife being murdered.
Peiraprigond – You become trapped in a fortress.
Red Waters remake – Find your missing brother
Detorcium – Find your missing brother.
SDP – Find your missing brother.
The Four Horsemen – Stop the four horsemen
The Attic – Find out the secrets your father has been keeping from you.
Obscurity – Return to your home town.
The Atonement – A washed up detective gets a final request.
Illusions of the Dead – Look for medicine to save your dying daughter.
In Dark – Someone offers to fix all your problems if you critique their manor.
Amnesia The Chosen Ones – You are searching for a dagger inside a manor.
Lifeless The Abandon – You go to check out a castle in the woods.
A Coward's Debt – A man pays for his sins.
Abduction – You are abducted by a familiar antagonist.
Amnesia Chromanin – You wake with no memory, and need to choose who to trust.
Let it snow – Bring Christmas cheer to the study with the help of your skeleton friend Spelos.
Curse of Ripley Manor – Your wife and son are missing, and you must find them.
Digressiophobia chapters 1 & 2 - You and your friend go to the library.
What's Beneath the Truth – Investigate an old library
Escape from Brackenburg - You wake up in a castle, and must escape.
Extraction point – Survive a zombie apocalypse
recommended:
These ones are still good and enjoyable, but not worthy of a high recommendation
Alma Remastered – A familiar character from Final Revelations.
Amnesia Abomination – You wake up inside of a high school.
Do Not Drink Too Much – You wake up after drinking too much
Fekete Keres – look for your missing daughter
The Dark Treasure – Investigate what’s hiding in that old castle
Kidnapped – You've been kidnapped
I Got Invited – You are invited to a party
There are many good custom stories I had to cut for space, and I implore you to look for others not suggested here, and try them too.
Overall, I strongly recommend this game. It is 100% worth the price tag for what you will get.

I bought the game back in 2018, but until a couple of days ago i hadn't played it. And damn I wish I played it sooner. Even though I beat the game the other day it is already my absolute favorite horror game. The chilling atmosphere, the story, the monsters... This game is scary as sh*t. Let out some of my most manly screams while playing this. I have played many horror games and I have never been this scared.
An absolute masterpiece. 10/10

The graphics are still pretty good, even in 2020. Great lighting, great 3D models for objects, good models for monsters / people. The sound mixing is very good, even without headphones it's very ambient and immersive. The music beautiful, I'm honestly thinking about getting a hold of the soundtrack. The art is amazing too, it's style really adds to the feeling of somber & mystery the game creates.
The story is very interesting and engaging. I really like how we find things out backwards, it's iconic even now. They did a really good job making the characters very gray, despite everything. They would do something horrible, yet you could still sympathize with why they did it. The storytelling is also pretty amazing. The game tells us everything through various methods. The flashbacks, the letters & notes, cut-scenes, etc...
Other things I personally liked was how freaky the monsters are. They're really disfigured & rotting looking humans, but in a very unnatural way. The grunt is my favorite. His upper jaw being exposed and his stitched up & barley held together body really make him properly freaky. Not horribly scary, but it doesn't need to be. I wouldn't want to be him. I also liked how period-accurate everything was. The furniture, the random items laying around, even the stamps on crates really helped with feeling like I was in a very old castle while in the 1800's.
Needless to say, I really love this game. It's a piece of art and I really enjoy it!

For pros: Amnesia The Dark Descent has incredible atmospheric horror. The game's ambiance is perfect, and it can be difficult at times to know whether or not you're actually in danger. This is also added onto with the usage of the sanity meter. If you're in the dark for too long, or stare at monsters for too long, your sanity will slowly go down, so you feel this slight need to move with a purpose so you're not stuck in the dark for too long. The game offers you 2 forms of light: tinderboxes that can light torches as well as keep your sanity from going down, and an oil based lantern that you can carry with you, but your sanity will gradually go down if you're in the dark for too long. Both of these items add a risk factor to the game since there isn't an overabundance of oil or tinderboxes, so you have to be careful and manage your resources properly, or risk going insane in the darkness of Alexander's castle.
There's also a few hub areas with unique puzzles and challenges to overcome before you can go to the next area. Solving puzzles will also slightly increase your sanity in the event you happen to be low. Most of the puzzles are a hit, but there's a few that are slightly confusing and may require a guide if you're impatient or completely stumped like I was once or twice during my play through of the game. Lastly for my pros, the story is very engaging. Usually I skip over lore entries in games because I don't really want to read too much unless it's a game designed with that as the game play loop like a visual novel for example, but Daniel (your character) reads over his diary entries as you find them, which help piece together why he ultimately decided to drink the potion that erased his memory. I found myself often times skeptical of Daniel, and wasn't sure why he was so determined to kill Alexander at the beginning of the game, but as I played and he read more from his journal, the pieces of the puzzle I was missing started to make sense in a story that I ultimately enjoyed!
Now time for a few cons: The camera's blur is a bit over the top when your sanity is low. It does a good job at simulating someone losing their mind, but my eyes would hurt a bit whenever my sanity was low or whenever Daniel was hallucinating and the camera did the intense blur effect. Also, the monster is pretty goofy looking. The chase music is iconic and pretty terrifying, but he looks very derpy when you stare at him from afar. The monster also gives up chase entirely too quickly except in scripted sequences where he chases you to the door at the end of a few areas. When he's just roaming around, even if he spots you, he will often give up chase about 5-10 seconds after you see him, and then he'll just teleport to a random spot never to be seen again. There's also a second invisible monster that can only be seen by its steps in the water, but I personally enjoy that monster a lot. I'd say the first time you encounter the water monster is actually the scariest moment in the entire game for me since I also have a fear of deep water (specifically deep ocean water) but I've already played SOMA, which is fantastic, would recommend, but besides those few cons, this game holds up really well 11 years after it came out!
My final verdict of the game would be an 8 or 9/10. Story is great, game is scary, and though I think 20 bucks is a bit steep for this game, it often goes on sale very cheap bundled together with the other games in the franchise! Though A Machine for Pigs isn't as good as this game, it's still nice to get them bundled together for around 10 bucks. Hope this review was helpful, and have a fantastic day if you stuck it out through the entire thing!

THIS REVIEW IS BOTH IN ENGLISH AND SPANISH (SCORE AT THE END OF THE TEXT)
ESTA RESEÑA ESTÁ TANTO EN INGLÉS COMO EN ESPAÑOL (NOTA AL FINAL DEL TEXTO)
-SHORT REVIEW (ENGLISH):
The story is really well written, telling a classic horror tale with clear inspirations in HP Lovecraft, that remains dark, intriguing and terrifying until the end of the game.
The lighting, art direction, and especially the sound design are phenomenal, and combined they managed to create a dense and suffocating atmosphere.
In terms of its gameplay, the sanity system and lighting as a gameplay mechanic are the most interesting and remarkable things about the game and they are well integrated with the rest of the gameplay elements (resource management, enemy design etc.)
Unfortunately once you discover how the main enemy in the game works (the one who appears the most throughout the whole main campaign) he becomes predictable and easy to manipulate, and he stops being a threat to become just another obstacle. Although this only happened to me in the last third of the game, once i had already played almost 7-8 hours of the 12 that the game lasted.
Additionally, the puzzles and level design through most of the game are complex but fair, but on some occasions they can become confusing and obnoxious.
With all of this said, even though the last third was weaker and i had problems with some puzzles and levels, most of the game was an interesting, terrifying and well designed experience. I recommend it for all fans of the survival horror genre.
-NOTA FINAL/FINAL SOCRE: 8,5
I completed this game on normal difficulty and I played the whole main story until the end. I played it for 12.5 hours.
Completé este juego en dificultad normal y jugué a toda la historia principal hasta el final. Jugué a este juego durante 12.5 horas.

I think that many modern horror games nowadays, at least the ones made by studios rather than indie devs, try to shoot for higher means to cause horror than what is clearly a simple stage, where if you understand the layout by any means, such as a replay or a fanmade map, you realize that you're really just roaming a badly lit series of rooms with some scripted moments here and there to throw a monster near you that will inevitably despawn without starting a chase as long as you stay hidden and not do dumb things to attract it close to you, unlike what seemingly many people didn't have the patience to do in many of the old videos (probably because they either didn't bother trying to understand the game mechanics or because they knew what was way more fun for the audience). Nowadays the standard for horror seems to have risen, with many long terms fans of the genre being at a point where just being stuck in dark and solving some puzzles as long as you don't hear a monster around isn't exactly fresh or that unnerving.
But it's this exact design that in my opinion makes Amnesia still stand high among many modern attempts at survival horror. If some indie games like Slender showed us already back in the day that sometimes less is more, especially in terms of horror, then I think Amnesia nails this very well while still bringing a lot of thought and design by its team to strike a perfect balance. It's really not a complex game, but it's clearly aware of it, even at the first startup they tell you that you should let the game take you in and that you should try to enjoy it for an optimal experience.
Despite the very scripted nature of the events in the levels of Amnesia, it still is in many ways oozing with atmosphere, thanks to the polished level design, pacing, usage of lighting, Lovecraftian story, and the even nowadays highly remembered sound design and music compositions. It fully relies on this method to suck you in and make you more jumpy and on your toes, and if you don't allow the game to fully take you in, you will most likely find it as a pretty boring game. It is understandably not everyone's cup of tea, with some horror game fans preferring more unique and faster means of getting scared, rather than roaming around for more than half an hour and solving puzzles just to finally encounter one monster that they didn't even give chase.
But that's exactly why I still love it. It does require an ideal time and mood for an optimal experience, but if you put some effort into it, it becomes an experience that you will remembers years after playing. I know I still do.
And despite the possible slight venom that some custom stories might have brought during the mainstream popularity of the game, which flooded the scene with little to no attempt at atmosphere and instead kept throwing teleported monsters and naked corpses in your face with the same few loud sound effects, many of them nowadays are at best remembered as more funny than scary (possibly because they also often had some very 2012 humor thrown into them out of nowhere), but they stand low before some amazing custom stories that the fans have made. I would argue that some of them possibly beat the base game in terms of level design, with decisions such as making more monsters actively roam around and be a danger instead of just despawning after two minutes as long as you won't make a sound. Some of them go as far as to fully modify the game to add new looks and functions to strike even the experienced fans by surprise. And the overall freshness and insanely shocking polish of some of them can easily provide hours upon hours of enjoyable experience. Some of them aren't even that old, as far as I know the community is still alive by the time of writing, and not too long ago Frictional Games officially made the game's source code open source. And even if there wouldn't be any more custom stories, the amount of them is still high enough to make your money's worth for at least double the base price, and that's not mentioning how cheap it's on a sale these days.

Story > You are a man who wakes up in a strange dark castle and has no idea what's going on or how he got there. So you have to figure it out by exploring and finding several notes and clues throughout the game. I personally love the plot of the game. It slowly reveals itself and has a good pace. There is also much additional lore in the world of Amnesia.
Gameplay > You can only run and hide which rises the tension and horror very well. Most parts of the game are very dark and staying in the dark slowly drives you mad. Your only friends are tinderboxes and a lantern. You can move, rotate and throw almost any object. The puzzles are quite simple but very very satisfying to solve. The scariness not only comes from the bizarre events and creatures, but also from the gloomy, dark, haunting atmosphere itself.
Soundtrack & Audio > The sounds you hear from enemies and other sources are quite scary and can also help you avoid danger and solve puzzles. The soundtrack fits the game perfectly and is memorable. I really like the chase music and the ones you hear when an enemy is nearby. The voice acting is perfect.
Length and Replayability > It took me around 7-8 hours to complete the main story even though I'm a bit dumb when it comes to puzzle solving, so you could assume that it's a bit short but you wouldn't feel that way. There are multiple endings that you can get without having to start over. There's also a challenging game mode and a small DLC with an interesting plot. But my personal favorite has to be the custom stories. You can get hundreds of hours of playtime by playing different stories made by the players and there's always something new to try.
Other > Although I have a potato computer, the game ran smoothly and I didn't encounter any bugs except one time that a box just glitched out of existence but it wasn't game breaking. Graphics look good even after a decade of release. The price is totally ok but I always recommend waiting for a sale even for a 2$ game.
Amnesia: The Dark Descent is an excellent and memorable horror game that is totally worth your time. 100% Recommended.

SPOILER FREE REVIEW
I never played this game back when it was at the height of it's popularity, but after finishing my first playthrough I can certainly say it lives up to the hype.
It's incredibly atmospheric first of all, which is a big deal for me. When I play a horror game, atmosphere is my top priority and Dark Decent nails it every time. Every set piece and moment is striking and memorable.
The story is definitely another high point, I don't usually care much about story in games but this one had me very interested the whole time. Very well done.
The puzzles are great for the most part, and although there are a few that seem needlessly cryptic I still enjoyed solving them.
Overall I really enjoyed this game. If you're a horror fan and you've never played it, I highly recommend picking it up. It's got something for everybody.

It is not about the jumpscares. It is the pure psychological horror that messes with your head and makes you so scared that you need to stop a little before going forward, just to recover some of the sanity you left behind while playing it.

Now - if you're someone who is discovering this game after playing stuff like...Outlast, RE7, etc. This game may be super tame by today's standards.
That isn't what this game is about. Amnesia was designed to lure you in with it's steaming aura of mystery, atmosphere and helplessly advancing through a castle.
On every level I feel the game achieves what it set out to do. Did it change the whole genre? Maybe not. Did it change my expectations in what I look for in a horror game? Absolutely.
I don't think I need to explain the mechanics of the game if you're already seeking reviews. All I can say is that if you let this game haunt you, it will. Nothing about it feels overproduced and it doesn't have any 'AAA' pitfalls.

I tried Amnesia because I've only heard positives about it.
I haven't finished it because I really dislike the horror genre, and couldn't force myself to proceed after a while.
However, I actually liked this game.
The game is exactly what it needs to be: Scary, atmospheric, different and great.
Pros:
- Atmosphere
- Sound
- Ambient
- Scary
- Dark
- Weird
Neutral:
- At times, it looks like it's older than it actually is, but it mostly adds to the whole scary theme so it's no big deal
Cons:
- Would be nice if there was something that at least nods us in the right direction from time to time when we get stuck
I give amnesia this score: 8/10

It's funny how just finishing the game could easily give you 7 rare achievements which implies that they abandoned it either because it's scary or they just don't like it. Either way, even though the game did not age well in some part - It is still creepy no matter what.
Graphics:
A bit turned off in terms of graphics, text, and UI at the beginning, which look very aged even as a 2010 game. However, once I got drawn in, those issues just doesn't look that bad anymore. There's also a plenty of spacious level, which make me wonder how unbelievably enormous the castle is.
Gameplay:
As my second Frictional Games played after SOMA, I find Amnesia a lot scarier since you need to manage resources and lights. I also noticed a pattern on their games where a miss-able interactable object could get you stuck for some time. The lack of navigation doesn't really help on that part, but atleast that help out on Immersion.
Story:
A well written game for an indie studio at the time. What a horrific story too,
those torture chamber is really messed up.
It also has a great audio & voice acting that really increase the terror it brings. I just quite don't like how Daniel read out his diary though, It felt like he was just reading something out of a billboard.
Overview:
I don't really play a lot of horror games, but I can clearly see how this game is well appraised. It was a well paced scary game that don't really rely on jumpscare, yet scary enough to make my skin crawl.

Perhaps one of the biggest compliments you can give to a horror game is that it's aged well. Amnesia has, in almost every respect, even if you've been spoiled by the AI of Alien: Isolation or the graphical fidelity of RE2: Remake in recent years.
You know what? The story is damn engaging too. I found myself spending a night reading the wiki after completing it, which I rarely do. To say this game is regularly on sale for £5 bundled with other Frictional titles, well, you really can't go wrong here.

Sound and music in the game is quite good. The music in general is really remarkable, and the sounds, ambient is something, which it not makes you safe to hear those. It really for this old castle, I liked so much.
What is also really good in Amnesia, is the story. At the beginning, nothing makes sense around you, but going further in the castle, you will learn more about Daniel and the sinister secrets of the castle and it's lord, Baron Alexander. You can find diary pages from Daniel previously, which he wrote those, before he forgot everything, and other written sources. The twists of the story is well made. The game also has multiple endings, so it definetly worth to play it through more than one time.
Controls is easy to play with. You don't have to use too much buttons, so playing the game is not hard at all. Everything works properly, I really didn't had any problem with the controls.
How to imagine the gameplay? You playing in FPS mode and you move forward, going around to sub routes to find out happened or know the story better. The game often gives you puzzles, which are easy to solve, but perfect to mix the gameplay. There are parts, when the player has to hide or move with careful, because of the monsters, and usually you need to solve puzzles here too. Because of the awesome flow and mood in the game and the mixed gameplay, the player won't be bored, especially if it into the story of the game, which is more like explorational. The player get an inventory system to hold story items or puzzle items, a lantern, which needs oil to use, tinderboxes which are good to lit up candles or other things which can do some lights and a diary, which I talked about it before. Player also has to watch out for his health, to not get damaged, but also for his mental health, which can go down, if Daniel see something unusual, if he see a monster or if he is in the dark too much. However, if you are in the dark for some time, your vision will get used to it and you will see better, however because your mental health is going down, your vision will be blurry and also hear and see things which is not really there. Your mentel health can be fixed if Daniel stay in the light for some time, and physical health with a health restore item.
I need to mention the 2 difficulty levels, Normal and Hard, because Normal it really feels like it's for those, who want to play the game for the story, monsters not see you easily and your mental health is not lethal, meanwhile on Hard, enemies hard to avoid, you can die if your mental health hits zero, and not mentioning saving in the game, which you need a tinderbox to have. This difficulty definetly gives the real challange, meanwhile the Normal one is not that.
Playing the game for some time, I started to notice the scripting in the game. Monsters apear in the exact place and time, meanwhile I thought those will roam around properly, because you can actually prepare for them or know where they really are, but you can't expact that from scripting. Sometimes monsters can be buggy and not moving to anywhere too.
About the graphics, the game made in 2010, but it looks like it was made in 2004. It really didn't aged well, but weirdly the effects and light shadow effects on point, but the textures it really feels old. I wouldn't say it looks bad, but it's not for a game from 2010.
Amnesia is a good game and a scary one indeed, which is not rely on jumpscares completly, but on atmosphere and psychology. I mentioned few of it's problems, but those are not big of a deal, if you are scared to s***. I can recommend to those who wants to experience a good story and likes horror explorational horror games, but don't expect killing monsters... this is a story game. If you are a hardcore horror game player, then go for the hard mode. For 20 €, it is expensive, so wait for a 50% sale and get the game atleast.

2. Playability 9/10 (The controls are basic and easy to operate. You’ll have an inventory: oil lamp, tinder, laudanum and objects to solve puzzles. In the game will not only be to solve puzzles and explore mysterious corridors. Also, stealth movement is quite important if you don't want to die of madness or an attack of enemy. Because Daniel won't be able to defend himself. A survival game with good storytelling! A maze in the dark, deciphering puzzles with stalking the enemy in some moments of the journey, the dark descent . The game is in first person, so watch out for the enemy lurking behind you from the dark!)
3. Music and FX 9/10 (Like many horror games, ambient music is the most important thing in the development of the plot. We could say that the music is dark ambient with classical elements. The dark ambient developed in the game encourages situations of tension and mystery. That includes ambient sounds, strange noises, and the voice of memory in Daniel. Of course, the ambient music has been composed of drone sounds with low tones, accompanied by cello and piano. A provocation of the string effect of synthesizers that evoke fear, uncertainty, panic and blind hope. Music will accompany you throughout the game and each piece of music is part of the integral atmosphere of the game. The music is similar between minimalism and twelve-tone used in the cinema, in the form of an adage .)
4. Duration 9/10 (The game has a considerable duration. It is not short, but it is not long either. It contains a DLC that is the story of Justine . A short, but enjoyable game. In the main game it contains two difficulties. The hard level has its surprises. You can play in speedrun form, but what is the point of escaping from the castle of madness so soon?)
Recommendation: 9/10

The game itself is a great horror/puzzle game. You play as a fella named Daniel that keeps having flashbacks along with notes to keep you in the know.
The best part about this game is the puzzle solving, being left in the room to get on with solving the puzzle is how it should always be, and Amnesia does it brilliantly.
On the horror side of things it's dated with not many enemies.
In game immersion and atmosphere is 10/10
Great game and a must buy

The story is well written and you find notes throughout the game. You spend most of the time going from room to room lighting candles which have an affect on Sanity, a game mechanic, which if you get too low you will hallucinate.
There are monsters in the game and they are searching for you. They're too strong for you and so your only options are to hide and run.
It's good fun. There is some non-sexual nudity and dead bodies (of men). Don't play if you're afraid of seeing a penis.

Game is set in the 1800's and you play as Daniel, waking up in a place called Brennenburg Castle not remembering a thing due to Amnesia (hence the name). You explore the place and uncover what happened, along with Daniel's part in it, as you progress... ofcourse, you're not alone.
Movement is simple; you can walk, run, crouch, jump, lean and pick up stuff. There's physics to the objects and even the doors (which I like that you can slowly open and peek). There's also an inventory system which is necessary because you'll be solving puzzles as you go. I found little difficulty in doing them, though there was the occasional puzzle or two that I did get stuck on.
One mechanic I really like is sanity. You can lose/gain sanity. Losing sanity happens when you see scary events, stay in the dark for too long (due to Daniel's Nyctophobia), or look at monsters for too long. Gaining sanity happens when you stay in the light and when solving puzzles. There's interesting twists at lower sanity; your view's distorted, and the environment changes slightly. Lower it goes, and your view's blurry with slow mouse movement and you see illusions. At its lowest, you collapse to the floor unable to move (at max difficulty, you die at this point), then soon get up with increased sanity. The monsters are more likely to find you at lower sanity. You will have to make sure to light up the area using tinderboxes or your lantern if there's oil, along with solving puzzles in the way to maintain high sanity. I have never seen games with that kind of mechanic before.
The game has very minimal jumpscares, and relies a lot on setting a terrifying tone with its atmosphere and environment. This game does a great job at sound effects too, as there's a lot of them depending on the area. At certain areas it even felt like something was constantly following me but it was just the soundscapes. It also has excellent music and score that compliments the scary tone.
Monsters are also great. You are unable to fight them and the only things you can do is run or hide. Being chased by them will put you on the edge of your seat for the first time. They react to things such as objects thrown at a general direction to distract them, as well as the lighting of the area. They break doors as well and are reliably fast at chasing you. They have excellent scary designs as well, but I won't say more than that.
Story is good, but I felt it was a little short maybe..? I expected longer. The writing is excellent with fine character development and style however, and I'd say it's fairly enjoyable.
I believe this game is now more than a decade old, but I'd say it aged like fine wine. I remember watching some of my favorite LP YouTubers play this back in 2011-2012 like PewDiePie, and it was one hell of a time. Now I got to play it for myself, and it's even better than I have imagined it.
Highly recommended.

There is no technical brilliance to the graphics, but the atmosphere is so ominous with its darkness that it is difficult to care about such details. At the same time, a sound design that mixes steps, whispers and dissonant sounds definitely puts the player inside the dreadful castle.
The game meets his proposal with mastery: it scares, creates a climate of tension, and the construction of the plot instigates the player’s curiosity.

Once the initial shock-factor is over and wardrobe-hiding or dangerous-water-wading is through, it becomes a slog.
And the monster becomes a laughing-stock quite fast.
Amnesia is a historically important game. Firstly, it spawned a new breed of rollercoaster horror-games starring helpless protagonists which bloomed into Bloober team stuff on one side and into Red Barrel stuff on the other - which in its turn influenced a number of other projects. Secondly, it launched careers of a whole constellation of YouTube top-tier people.
However, now, ten years later, there is very little reason mechanically or thematically why you should play it, because there is very little decision-making here.
If you are very-very into Gothic novel stuff - play it, why not.
Otherwise - Sylvio, Darkwood, Detention, Knock-Knock, Year Walk if you want something original and fresh;
Alien: Isolation if you want a top-tier non-cliché game;
Amnesia: a Machine for Pigs from the developers of Dear Esther if you want something like the original Amnesia, but are repelled by its triteness;
or Pathologic 2 if you want a truly harrassing and wonderful experience.

It's not really the kind of genre I normally play so I don't know how much I'll get out of it, but I can see the appeal and it's well crafted. There's also a pretty extensive feature that lets players craft their own stories, so if that's something you are interested in this might be for you.
I wouldn't have bought it for myself (it was part of a bundle), but I can't thumb it down since it's actually a decent game for it's genre even if I won't play it much.
