Errungenschaften: Nein
Positiv:
- Spannende Agenten-Story
- Gute Mechaniken
- Grafik und Sound sind akzeptabel für ein älteres Spiel
- Nette Fähigkeiten
Negativ:
- Steuerung kompliziert
- Stealth nicht immer möglich, wegen verbuggter KI
- Hängenbleiben in Wänden
Fazit:
Empfehlenswert!!!!

The games combat sequences work like in Gears. Attack from cover. It's up to you if you wish to operate stealthy or attack head on.
The game also comes with a strong role playing aspect. You can change your look and collect abilities in different skill trees like assault rifles, martial arts, pistols, sabotage, shotguns, stealth, toughness, technical aptitude or submachine guns. The development of the story relies heavily on decisions you can freely make in the game and in the many communications.
Despite its age, Alpha Protocol is still a great game and I regret not playing it much earlier. The game receives a very strong recommendation from me and if the games is still lingering in your library unplayed, give it a try. It's great!
Pros:
- brilliant story
- great atmosphere
- perfect voice acting (English only)
- your decisions strongly influence the game
- very many decisions to make
- many, very interesting and divers characters
- many different organisations
- satisfying combat
- high re-playability
- huge skill tree with many special abilities to unlock
- great lock picking, pc hacking and alarm deactivation mechanism
- long game
Cons:
- outdated graphics
- boss fights are somewhat annoying
- very short time to make decisions. This can be a problem for none native speakers.

○ erinnert leicht an Mass Effect/Half-Life

The game has an excellent premise, revolving around the influence of the military industrial complex on geopolitics. While at time the details seem a little muddled, it does well enough to keep someone like me who actively follows international news hooked.
Of course the game isn't all good. Some (but not all) of the suave dialogue lines are pretty cringy. It often sounds more like an eighth grade boy trying to be smooth. I mostly favor the professional side of the dialogue tree, so that never impacted me much, but I see how it would lead to a much less enjoyable experience for someone more inclined towards the other approach (which is unfortunate since the writing is otherwise top-tier). Most of the voice acting is excellent, except for the Arab characters in the first act who all seem to be voiced by Americans who are doing their best to imagine what an Arabic accent might sound like. Having spent much of my adult life around Arabs, it sounds pretty jarring to me, but it would probably be a minor or even non-issue for most people.
The gameplay is... ok. Serviceable. The gunplay runs on RNG mechanics like in the original Deus Ex. That works for me, but probably won't be to everyone's taste. The limited interactability of the environment is a bigger downer for me. I would have loved to have more options for climbing around, jumping off of things, blowing open doors etc. (like in the original Deus Ex). The linearity of the levels is a little frustrating given the overall focus on player choice (it also would be nice to have the option of customizing your character's appearance more, but that's a minor issue: you get more customizability than the in Deus Ex: HR (i.e. nothing) but less than in the original Deus Ex (i.e. a few different skin tone/hair color options)). I guess they were going for a Jason Bourne look.
The biggest problem is the cutscenes. The game often makes you do stupid things like run out of cover to yell at a boss in a cutscene before dropping you back into combat now exposed out in the open. Again, a strange design decision for a game based on playing the way you want.
Ultimately, none of these nagging issues are deal breakers. Everything else about the game is just so immersive that it's easy to ignore the shortcomings and enjoy the ride.

Some consider it a classic, one of its kind. Others remember it for the janky everything and the hacking minigame, which is horrible both in controls and visuals and it is amazing that it got released in this state. I tried this game multiple times and i just can't take it.
A solution would be to open source this whole game and let the fans fix this. I want this to be good.

Good things:
This game is a great mix of an RPG and action and stealth and this game really rewards you for different playstyles. The more you level different skills the better you get at using them and it is important that you feel that each point you put into a skill is important. There are no empty levels giving you no bonuses. Some people say that some weapon types are much better than others but I tested them all and I think each one of them is good but in different situations. Also lockpicking and hacking minigames are fine and I liked them more than in some other games.
The first time I played this game it was long time ago before even having it on Steam and I finished it using a pistol, stealth, martial arts and sabotage for all the hacking and lockpicking. This time I picked assault rifles, sabotage, toughness and technical aptitude and I must say both times I played this game it felt like a totally different game. First time I was sneaking everywhere disabling everything and doing many silent takedowns or used tranquilizer rounds to not kill anyone and I was using the professional dialogue options all the time. I felt like a true spy. No one saw me no one knew I was there or what I did. The second time I was more like a rambo ignoring or triggering alarms on purpose to get many enemies in one place to kill them with assault rifles and grenades, shooting down cameras instead of evading them and using aggressive dialogue options all the time. I loved how the way I roleplayed both times made different NPCs and different factions to like or hate me and different romances to become available. It was also really great as that changed who survived and who died both times I played. Also it was nice that during the end credits the way I played and decisions I made changed how different nations were affected both times.
It is a great idea that the way you buy weapons and armors and upgrades for them is by using your PC and login into black market. I also loved that you can also buy mission intel for your missions in that black market as it can give you some extra side quests or loot or show you the whole map from the start or give you more information about NPCs and factions. You can also use that black market to sell things you don’t need and your relations with different NPCs and factions influence what you can buy.
Bad things:
The only bad thing for me was that on the new PC the game have a problem with sniper rifles that you can find on some levels or pay someone to put them there. The mouse sensitivity on sniper rifles is so big that even with changing the mouse sensitivity to minimal in game settings still makes sniper rifles almost impossible to aim on targets and that made me wish I had not spend money on mission intel giving sniper rifle as it was just easier to kill anyone with your standard weapons than to aim with a sniper rifle.
Conclusion
It is just overall a great game mixing RPG with action and stealth and the choices you make change a lot of things in the game world.
Overall score 8.5/10

That being said this is one of the few games I've ever played that could be described as a gem in a turd. Once you get past the weird interface, mini-games, and awkward combat it is freaking amazing. The story line is great, dialogues work, the skill tree is the best since Deus Ex and everything just comes together and works.

For a spy game you spend almost the entire game in tactical gear either sneaking or shooting. There is very little espionage or gadgetry needed to beat the game.
Stealth is either crazy easy or nearly impossible depending on the scenario. A lot of the game is figuring out when to sneak or when to shoot your way out. Unfortunately, combat is about as well done as stealth.
Overall I liked the game but it's more of an RPG with a different flavor that uses the spy world as a setting but isn't much of a spy game itself.

Imagine this game like mass effect but with less polished mechanics and not as grand in scale.
THe story is solid the graphics are still okay.
The combat isnt that bad but kind of outdated in todays terms maybe.
You have different combat and non combat skills can hack computers doors and security alarms.
You can use a stealthy approach but there are no real consequences if you dont go the stealth way.
The best part of the game is that your dialog and normal choices actually alter the story.
Unfortunately the game isnt for sale on steam anymore since the license for something has ran out and sega pulled the game. So only way you might get lucky is through 3rd party key seller sites i guess.
TL,DR:
Fun little gem with outdated mechanics but choices that matter.

This is not an action RPG. Rather, it is an RPG seen through 3rd person view plus action elements. So what's the difference you ask? Take the stealh for example: without any level in stealth skill you will be detected in no time even though you don't make any noises and approach the enemies from behind - the enemy will always hear you no matter what. The game relies heavily on your gear stats and character skill level, not on your skill as a player. This 'misunderstanding' is what caused people to give this game unfavorable review because they thought that their skill playing stealth shooter might apply in Alpha Protocol. This is not a Hitman game.
The gunfights in Alpha Protocol is about the same level as the first Mass Effect game. Controls feels loose. Sometimes you want to do something, but then you accidentally did something else. Not investing any points in any of the gun types is a mistake in Alpha Protocol as there will be a time where direct confrontation is unavoidable. You will miss almost all the shots you take when you fire a gun without any skill points.
The enemy AI is dumb as a rock.
Alpha Protocol is divided into missions. Before each mission starts, you will have a conversation with your handler and you will be given a few options how to reply to the conversation. Choosing the right conversation option will raise affinity with the handler and give you some nice perks that will help you in your mission. Your character will also get bonus perks depending on the way you play the game: for example, if you avoid enough enemy guards, you will get bonus to your stealth and noise reduction.
The story isn't any special so far at the time writing this. Standard American spy stuff, with bad Arab, bad Russian and bad Chinese guys. However, the dialogues are certainly interesting just as in any Obsidian game. The dialogues here are extremely cheesy with corny jokes that worth at least a chuckle.
TL;DR: if you think Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines is the best RPG ever, you will surely enjoy this light hearted RPG. If you expect a Hitman with RPG elements, you will be disappointed.

Yes, it has bugs (quite a lot unfortunately).
Yes, it's a bit corny.
Yes, it has a lot of stereotypes straight from all the action movies I love.
It has conspiracies, stupid enemies, stealth, comical villains and pulpy spy feel. And it doesn't feel like I watch a movie but influence the story by what my character says and does.
I've played it when it came out (and bought on Steam to support Obsidian) and didn't put the game down till I've finished the story.
I want a sequel. I wish there were more games like this.

As soon as I started playing this game I already had a few doubts of how it was going to be but I just let the game flow and see if it would eventually grab my attention, initially I had a good vibe about it thanks to a really nice dialog system, the story sounded interesting and the game didnt look bad despite having a really bland visual design, the characters and cutscenes were well-animated and I had no issues paying attention to the dialog cuz it just felt really well-done to me, in the first debrief scene I wanted to ask questions to the characters I was interacting with cuz I really liked the dialog and presenting different choices for my character to take on was a nice idea, the whole game setting and ideas are nice, its a espionage RPG after all, you level up completing objectives and you can build your character' skill tree by putting points in stealth, weapon usage, tech, etc, its simple but effective, also the voice acting was nice too, the character we end up playing has some sort of personality despite us not knowing much about his past, the problem is the gameplay, mostly the combat which is what made me gave up here, its REALLY bad, like REALLY REALLY BAD, my god its been a while since Ive seen such a bad AI in a game before, Ive experienced many ugly, embarassing moments here where I saw enemies walking around in circles, me shooting and aiming at them and they not reacting or moving at all, killing one after another while they just stand still or going to check a nearby dead body ignoring their surroundings, sometimes just running after me at flash-like speed and punching me instead of I dont know taking other types of tactic or their own guns like why you run all the way just to punch me, an armed man ???
Talking about the gunplay, its horrible too, the way they tried to design a recoil system is horrendous, having to just wait for the reticle to focus on a enemy isnt fun especially when that enemy IS SEEING IM AIMING AT HIM, HE SPOTTED ME AND HE JUST SITS THERE AND WAIT FOR HIS EVENTUAL DEATH DOING NOTHING, the FOV is also too close, its uncomfortable to play especially at indoor locations, stealth is not good either if we try to no go guns blazing mode since the game sometimes forces you to do engage, especially in boss battles, stealth isnt good either because we eventually have to get close to the enemy, aim at his head with our silenced weapon and just wait for the reticle to focus so we can get a clear shot, this mechanic sucks the fun out of the gunplay which sucks equally on both sides, stealth or guns blazing, also the enemies tend to be very bullet spongy, it just feels so poorly done, Obsidian should look at this game and see this as a mistake they shouldnt repeat again, its a technical failure, I also had some glitches, nothing alarming to the point of having to restart the whole mission but the many problems and the crappy gameplay turned me off and ruined the little immersion I had from the story bits, its a shame, theres no reason to play this game at all no matter how good the story may be if the gameplay is so poorly done like this, avoid at all costs.

The things is, it was all worth playing again. There is a lot of linearity in this one, not in the way of solving quests but more like corridor style quest system. If you are distracted in games nowadays so easily and want to play some exquisite RPG form the past, Alpha Protocol is the right choice. Too bad, it cannot be bought as it is withdrawn from sales.

A Janky Game with High Replayability
I'm going to keep this review short and sweet, since this game isn't being sold on Steam anymore. Maybe you have a key for the game or, like me, it's in your backlog and you want to know if it's worth your time. I'd give the game a 7/10 personally. It isn't the best-looking game, and it isn't the smoothest game in terms of movement and mechanics. In fact, I think there could be a great deal of improvement when it comes to the shooting mechanics and the UI among other things. The AI can quite frankly be laughable at times. But the story and the freedom of choice in this game is unparalleled! Every choice you make has consequences that carry from the beginning of the game to the end. These choices affect your allies, enemies, your perks/skills, when you get equipment, everything. I ran through the game twice, once as a stealthy pacifist and then again as a psychopathic dudebro just to see what would change and do not regret the time I spent. I almost ran through it a third time, and I know there are other people that have run through it more than that. If you like RPGs and/or action games and are looking for something unique (or for some laughs while streaming with friends) then you can do worse than Alpha Protocol.

Veteran RPG developer Obsidian's first foray into a meaty RPG in their own IP, Alpha Protocol is a bit of a mess, but a brilliant mess all the same.
Basically, it's a James Bond-esque espionage RPG, with perhaps just a hint of Austin Powers. It's silly and melodramatic and filled with betrayals and double crosses and all manner of nonsense that it takes very, very seriously: the fate of the world is at stake, after all! It's raucous fun.
Unfortunately it's still an Obsidian game, and they have their mixed reputation for a reason. Alpha Protocol is perhaps their most problematic game: it's riddled with bugs and glitches and the latter half of the game feels especially sparse, as it was likely rushed to release far before it was ready. Fortunately there are mods out there that help mitigate many of the issues people have with the game, but you're still going to want to be very careful and save often.

Even though the game is very tightly structured - you're never going to go anywhere other than Saudi Arabia, Rome, Taipei and Moscow - the feeling that every choice you make is closing doors somewhere and opening them elsewhere is ever present and means that it never gets old.
Sure, there are OP skill combos - but on the other hand, I believe folk have run the gauntlet with no skill boosts at all (not me; I'm not that good, even now!) and one never feels as though the game is being wilfully unfair; the difficulty level of different sections can very much depend upon your own actions elsewhere, and you can inadvertently make things far more difficult for yourself without realising.
And yes, I also realise that some folk hate the minigames with a passion. I can't share that hatred; I find them all to be well-balanced (and, again, they can be made easier or harder thanks to your own actions elsewhere. And the game does have enough tools to bypass most of them anyway.)
In the end though, it's the characters that win for me every time. Mina, Scarlet, Madison, Parker, Brayko, Albatross, the unforgettable Steven Heck, even Darcy and the wonderfully obnoxious Leland. They all feel real and continue to feel real even when one takes alternate routes and makes different choices. They're the reason I keep going back. I want to spend time with them, and find out if they have other secrets that I still haven't uncovered.
And what makes Alpha Protocol so great is that I wouldn't be at all surprised to learn that they do.

Really good game
Alpha Protocol is an RPG game in which we play Michael Thorton. We wake up in a secret Alpha Protocol base, and soon we'll go on our first mission, which is just the beginning of Michael's adventure.
Gameplay
It's an RPG game where, as we progress, we gain levels, for which we can improve various statistics, such as more life or better handling of weapons such as pistols or machine guns. A big advantage of the game is the reputation system, which is important in some missions and depending on the chosen dialogue option other situations can happen. Each mission can be completed in different ways. We can sneak in and try to complete the mission without killing, but if we want to, we can shoot everyone and not pay attention to cameras or alarm. In addition, there is a hacking system in the game, which makes it difficult, especially hacking the computer, which is very difficult at first. In the game, we will also meet bosses, who are done quite poorly, and the fight against them is boring and tedious. The possibility to finish the game in several different ways also deserves a plus. The biggest problem of this game is its wooden animations, but about that later. There are indeed bugs in the game, but they are not so annoying that I would like to remove this game from the disk.
Graphics
It's hard to get attached here. But the game was released in 2010, so it looks good for those times. Of course, it's not the kind of graphics that he would like to see in other games, but it met my expectations. As for character animation, I'm a little sad. As other reviewers write, character animations are weak and very artificial. It didn't have any great impact on the gameplay fun but I think it's worth to pay attention to this element.
Summary
In conclusion, Alpha Protocol is a very good game. Every next level was a pure pleasure for me. I liked very much that the game, even though in some part it was linear, because we had imposed the locations we had to go to in advance, the decisions we made had an impact on the ending. I think it is worth trying to play this game at least once and give it a chance.
✔️Different endings of the game
✔️Hacking (although sometimes it was difficult)
✔️Reputation system
✔️Improvement system
❌Few bugs
❌Wooden character animations
Time of completion: 15-20 hours (*I don't know why, but Steam didn't count the hours in this game, so I only have 2 hours.*)

What really sets this game apart is that your choices in the game do have an impact within the story and you will be surprised in how many ways it can be altered through dialog decisions and actions. It is a good system except for the fact that the tutorial and marketing over hypes this aspect where it really isn't.
It's like Mass Effect except on Earth with really janky third person action, the hacking mini-games aren't that bad, just buy some EMP and you're set to go.

The game is a work of genius. When it does what it is trying to do, it does it so well that it's almost embarrassing that a studio that was forced to beg its own fans for money to keep the lights on did it so well while studios with budgets larger than some countries' GNP can't pull off the same. The best term for it is 'reactive narrative'. There isn't a single plot point, character interaction, player choice, dialog passage or just about anything else that actually stands alone. Everything touches everything else and so everything really matters. In some ways the game is a harbinger of trends to come - New Game+ is largely a gimmick nowadays, but in Alpha Protocol the basic idea of what the game is, the player interacting with a developing plot they influence in a way that strongly rewards multiple playthroughs, is here a very deliberate design choice, with the new possibilities opened up in New Game+ also accounted for in unique ways. So too the kind of interaction and production seen in games like The Witcher 3, where quests can fork out in half a dozen different ways but largely act as islands set aside from the main thread of the plot. In Alpha Protocol no such distinction between 'main' and 'side' content really exists, the feedback mechanism is impressive in how comprehensive it is, and its full range is only visible after at least a second playthrough.
But, to get through that playthrough you will slog through a mountain of bugs, poorly designed or barely designed systems, bizarre half-baked video game logic, and all the rest. In my experience Obsidian's 'brilliant but buggy' reputation largely hinges on this game and Knights of the Old Republic II, and for good reason. Both are brilliant messes. If you want to give it a shot, just be patient.

You can't get this on Steam any more, but the story and the ways it reacts to you are worth witnessing; I highly recommend this if you get a chance to try it. Just... don't try too hard for stealth.
While the game often encourages it, trying for a perfect stealth run is (I'm told) literally impossible and even a GOOD stealth run is a fool's errand; this game is all about rolling with the punches and adapting on the fly, and your playstyle, I think, should reflect that. Stealth failed? Screw it, set everything on fire with some grenades as you go invisible, run to the opposite side of the map, and start blowing fools away with an assault rifle. You're not Solid Snake; you are MICHAEL THORTON THE UNSTOPPABLE, and the pitiful AI of common grunts can only hope to contend with the truckload of unbalanced wackiness you can rain down on their heads.
tl;dr Buggy but fun power trip spy fantasy with a great example of a reactive/branching narrative done quite well, particularly for its time. Don't be nice to Darcy.
