Dennoch: Nicht Empfehlenswert!!!!

Also, I just hate games that you need to patch with fan-made fixes just to make them playable.
Don't think I'll ever open this game again, it's just really unplayable. Wish I could refund it.

This is a survival horror game that had many interesting and even fascinating concepts that sadly were implemented quite bad. The structure of the game is close to "Alan Wake" - an episodic system with titles at the end of each and a quick recap after each episode. However, consider that those episodes are 2-3 times smaller than Alan's (the game itself is quite small, like 10-15 hours at max). It combines both corridor levels maze locations and semi-open-world - the main feature of the game - the New York Central Park. To move around in such location, you can utilise different vehicles (but mostly cars).
Pros:
+ Native GUI (similar to Dead Space, this game devs tried to make interfaces more native and fluid, but in some cases, it led to overcomplication and difficulties in understanding, still a worthy try).
+ You can switch between 1st and 3rd person view, and some items have different interactions (for example, an extinguisher as a weapon in 3rd person and its primary role in 1st person).
+ A very clever and interesting inventory system (all items you have are placed in inner jacket pockets, which means you can't have a ton of items at all times).
+ Crafting and combining items feel built into the gameplay very smoothly, making life easier (the mechanic itself is useful, and the game requires learning and using it, not just "we have crafting because most survival games have it").
+ Enemies and environmental hazards (spreading fire feature + you can put a chair on fire and use it as a weapon with bonus fire damage - great thing).
+++ THE OST by Olivier Deriviere (Obscure 2, Remember Me, Of Orcs and Men (also kinda meh\bad game but soundtrack is good), Assasin's Creed Black Flag, The council, Vampyr, A plague tale: innocence, etc) is god-level if you like folk-style; the main composition is very catchy.
Cons:
- First and foremost - the game requires fixes to change display options and run with fewer crashes that could be found in some Steam topics or internet guides.
- The game was made for Xbox 360, and though it supports mouse and keyboard, the GUI hints, tutorial advices, QTEs show gamepad buttons to press, which sometimes lead to unnecessary and frustrating deaths.
- The game is VERY unpolished and has many visual bugs (like floating clothes on the main character, some textures invisibility) and some functional (physics and collision models of a car can be very strange sometimes, where 1 inch difference between two grounds stops the car; also, physics of cables is very unpredictable).
-! Performance issues when new locations are loading (my god, I have 16 GB Ram, Ryzen 5 3600, 1660 Super, and SSD, which should be more than enough for the 2008 game (and it isn't lol)).
-! Stability issues - after some point game effects (like enemies death animation) are just brake sometimes
- It seems the game was rushed in development because its ending is VERY open and crumpled (devs were counting on a sequel that never happened).
-! SEVERAL session-breaking bugs that require restarting from the checkpoint because the character gets stuck in some mode (telescope view, inventory view, etc.).
Overall:
It's an interesting game that has some mechanics that were very first introduced or implemented there. The burden of time limits and ambitions made this game feel wasted. So much potential and so mid-result... I really like it and would recommend it for those who like survival horrors of the past (like Cold Fear, Cryostasis: Sleep of Reason, etc.) if you don't mind technical difficulties and open endings. As for others - rather pass. It's not user-friendly, buggy, and is a failed reboot of the series. Maybe if it were the current time, devs would have fixed it (like Cyberpunk or No Man's Sky or Fallout 76), but this game is stuck in limbo, and it's up to you if you want to descend into it.

I've never experienced a game with controls so unstable to the point where I literally almost wanted to punch the screen (Ahem, ahem, car scenes I'm talking about you...)
The gameplay can get repetitive but it isn't too bad at all, however, the zombies can get on your nerves. the only thing that made me continue was the story line, I've gotta say they did really well on that, so yeah, i'd recommend it to those who are AitD fans or those who really wanna play this game.

On the side note, I've used to experience a (terribly) localized version of the game; didn't know the protagonist speaks with the voice of Max Payne. Instantly became 500% more charismatic to me.
Now I wish there was a mod to swap the model to the old Max from the third game - would've been amazing.

Alone in the Dark from 2008 (also known as Alone in the Dark: Inferno on PS3) might be the last truly ambitious game of the last 20 years. That’s one hell of a statement to make, but I have good reasons to say it – what this game attempted to create is on a level that has not been attempted since. Possibly because the game didn’t turn out great and wasn’t positively received. I loved it back in 2008 even now for how frustrating a lot of the game is, I cannot help but love the effort and potential. While at the same time knowing well, that I can’t really recommend playing this game to the majority of people.
Let’s quickly set the stage. While Alone in the Dark franchise has been incredibly important in evolving the action adventure genre, it wasn’t exactly full of hits. I’ve revisited the original trilogy and The New Nightmare already. So it would be enough to say that it’s been 7 years since the last game, most people forgot this brand even existed and classic survival horror genre was more or less dead with survival action having varying popularity. If a new AitD game were to be released, it had to invent a new identity for itself. And the developers at Eden Games, who are still mostly known for racing games, seemingly decided to shoot for the stars and reinvent the genre just like the first game in the series did.
Alone in the Dark (2008) is everything. A lot of its mechanics are fully systemic – things break consistently, fire spreads naturalistically, item combinations behave the way you’d expect them to, liquids, ropes and cables are properly simulated… A lot of the puzzles in the game are fully built around those systems – breaking down doors, sticking explosive things on a timed fuse to a moving enemy, getting cables out of the way, setting a chair on fire to light your way and then burn down a bunch of planks that are blocking you, then grab a fire extinguisher and extinguish the flames… You can jump and climb on things. You can drive cars. There’s an entirety of New York’s Central Park that works as a small scale open world. There are incredibly impressive, even for 2023, scripted scenes with really cool set pieces and fun gameplay. You can also start the game from almost any moment and play it completely out of order with each part of the game being treated like an episode of a TV show. It’s like mixing Uncharted, Alan Wake and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – having crazy sandbox system driven gameplay and ultra polished cinematic experience. Released in 2008!
So how come this incredible thing wasn’t popular? Sometimes it’s systemic nature goes against it as it works too “honestly” for a cinematic game. So if the physics simulation decides that you will fiddle with something for 5 minutes, you will. Driving model is at times too sensitive for driving over the uneven terrain of Central Park. Sometimes when you need to remove an obstacle by burning it, you just have to sit and wait until fire realistically does it’s thing. And when you need to hold a burning object for a bit, it may get too hot to hold at an inappropriate moment.
And sometimes things just plain do not work or a poorly designed. You get RE4-like tank controls, except they feel extremely sluggish and unresponsive. Which could still work for a more gun-based combat, but it’s usually about melee or focusing on using item combinations, like spray and lighter to have a flamethrower. Camera often goes for the cool cinematic angles, just like in a classic survival horror, but in this game it’s almost always a detriment. So it’s far more comfortable to play in the first person mode a lot of the time. But it doesn’t work for everything and has its own little annoyances. The melee controls are set to the right stick which is a cool idea, but a lot of movement is poorly tracked and looks awkward. And sometimes the game just fails to do something it should do. PC port in particular was notoriously unstable since launch and even with modern fan fixes it can occasionally randomly crash or have odd physics-related glitches.
That’s not even covering how the design for the scenarios constantly jumps from being exciting and fun to being frustrating and idiotic. How sometimes a puzzle sequence can be smart, and sometimes the solution to a problem makes no sense. Because it’s something that happens exactly once and without warning or is just entirely unintuitive. Also the plot… I like the concept behind it, and it is a direct sequel to the original trilogy in a curious turn of events. But it jumps from plot point to plot point, lacking any character development and storytelling sucks. And a lot of the comments and dialogue lines have became infamous for a very good reason.
Still, when you are in the middle of an incredibly inventive sequence that uses complex system interactions and allows you to invent your own solution with tools that you just happened to scavenge from around the location – it feels incredible. Especially for the semi-optional tasks in the open world – a lot of them are set up as puzzles/challenges and it’s extremely entertaining to solve it your way, even if that way is extremely over the top and silly, like sticking a burning molotov to a car that you launch off a ramp so that it rams into a thing you need to destroy and explodes. It’s satisfying and very unlike a typical horror themed action adventure that retain the classic adventure game rigidity in its design.
That said, these optional objectives, for whatever reason, become available in very limited chunks, some of them have no fun challenge attached and a lot of the problems are solved by the slo-mo throw of a bottle with gasoline that you shoot in mid-air. Makes combat less frustrating too – it’s an experience you want to avoid because it’s annoying to fight the controls more than the enemies, not because it’s tough and burns your resources. Also the game only saves progress if you manually save or exit to the menu – force close or crash and all of your progress is lost. Oh and the PC port still has SecuROM DRM and doesn’t work without fan fixes at all…I almost cannot explain why Alone in the Dark from 2008 is so fascinating and inspiring as a game, because it does so many horrible things as well. But it really is something incredible.
I wish I could easily recommend this title. But to like it you must have patience for “ambitious, incredible, but deeply flawed” kinds of games, where you have to look past what’s before you to see what it could’ve been. Not that it looks bad, it still looks quite good and the soundtrack is fantastic. But I’m talking about the gameplay experience. And also while I’d love to see a remake of this game, I don’t think anyone will ever attempt to – the ambition of Alone in the Dark 2008 is just too great to do right, and not doing it in its fullest means you shouldn’t do it at all. If you do wish to play the game, I’d suggest the PC version with the fixes or, if you own PS3 and can get this title, your version will have some improvements over the original release, but also some odd additions and changes that were unnecessary. Whatever happens to the franchise in the future, I doubt it will ever risk to do something as insane and impressive as this game did and that is quite a shame.

Use this patch to help with crashing and widescreen support. https://unknownproject.github.io/aitd5.html
Pros
- Gameplay is all over the place, in an interesting way that's also a nightmare to use. Quick summary:
+ Basic movement is RE4 tank controls.
+ You heal yourself "directionally", by looking around your body.
+ Inventory has you look in your jacket, and you can see your stuff. Like outlast 2. Very cool!
+ You can pick furniture and stuff up and whack things with it. You can also wave it around a little, set it on fire, and use it as a torch. Ain't that neat? You do it by pulling the analog stick back and then forward. How odd.
- You can drag enemy bodies around. Careful trying it near fire if you want to burn them, because the controls are so dogshit you can easily die in the fire if you try. Evil Within did this better.
+ MGS2/3 style first person mode to shoot stuff with.
+ You drive around in cars, controls kinda suck.
+ Uncharted style parkour.
- Episodic, as all games of that time were. Each one is about 40 minutes long.
- Your character is voiced by the same voice actor as Max Payne. He also swears a lot because this was made in 2008.
- Setpieces are insane. "DUDE, what if there was a CRACK, that RAN ALONG THE WALLS, and ATE PEOPLE UP, then made them into ZOMBIES!!!! That'd be fucking AWESOME!!"
- At one point I thought "Wait a second. This is just Motorstorm Apocalypse!". And yeah, basically. But worse.
- I was thinking of Linkara everytime they said "the Lightbringer." In the Oneyplays voice of course.
Cons
- Music is generic, and far too "goofy" to be as serious as the game presumably tries to be. It's like 60s sci fi movie music over an episode of 24.
- Terrible PC port. Runs like shit sometimes. Do NOT use M+KB controls, they are confusing as fuck. Controller prompts all have a little menu telling you exactly what to use, and how best to use it. TO ACTIVATE THIS, YOU NEED AN XINPUT CONTROLLER, GO TO THE CONTROLS AND TRY AND REMAP SOMETHING TO A CONTROLLER KEY. HIT YES WHEN IT ASKS IF YOU WANT THE CONTROLLER LAYOUT. Very confusing, had my stumped for a while.
- The Terrible "Motorstorm Apocalypse" Bit, which you need to restart all the way from the beginning if you fail it. Loads of glaring examples of shit here. There's a shitload of AI civillian cars who will drive into you, pin you against walls and pit maneuvre you. At one point you need to smash through a glass pane. However it breaks one small square at a time. Then you need to anticlimactically take another run at it, and you get to see your lame stunt in slow motion. Also loads of the geometry is easy to get caught on, like cracks in the ground that suddenly open up.
- No health indicator. in a SURVIVAL HORROR GAME. Come on.
- Controls are solely designed to be as frustrating and annoying as possible. No, I do not need to be in any seat other than the drivers seat of a car. No, I do not need to drag that body (button to pick them up is same as run button and flashlight button). No, I didn't want to drop that. NO, YOU DO NOT NEED TO MAKE HEALING AS COMPLEX AS IT IS HERE, LET ME HIT A BUTTON AND BE HEALED. NO, I DID NOT MEAN TO POUR OUT MY FLAMMABLE LIQUID I WANTED TO THROW IT YOU FUCKING SHITHEAD. NO I DIDNT WANT TO PICK UP THAT CHAIR. DO WHAT I FUCKING SAY GOD DAMMIT.
- THE GAME HAS NO AUTOSAVE. I WENT TO LOAD MY GAME THINKING IT WOULD PUT ME AT THE CHECKPOINT BUT NO THE BEGINNING OF THE CHAPTER. FUCK THIS GAME. I'm putting it down that I completed it, i got to the final episode.
- Most of the games I play here play fine but have terrible stories, this one is so fucking shit to play it's unreal
"Overall Score: 25%
"I respect the ambition and effort, but putting everything and the kitchen sink in your game does not make it good. For bad game appreciators. Avoid unless you know what you're getting into. I feel bad for fans of the good Alone In The Dark games.""

In AITD awful everything except music.
I have no idea why I forgot how this game are sick. Maybe my brain blocked this to protect my psyche from damage.
From the start we need to fix a few things to be able to play at least (enable video options and fix resolution, audio fix and control).
Download here, there and get rolling, baby.
Bad physics. I am serious, it's horrible. Sad, some puzzles and game mechanics using this. The most painful car drive ever.
The main character does not obey to you. Inventory looks interesting, but overload.
What else. The story. Oh, lord.
True, I'm not the most vicious critic, but AITD were abominable.
Developers as if they thought what their game to short and putted in a last chapter grind element. TWICE!
I haven't seen so many bugs in a long time.
Don't waste your time.

It tries to innovate in the horror genre by adding elements that mimic immersive simulation and offers different ways to deal with enemies, for example: soaking your bullets in a flammable liquid, or using a health spray and a lighter to create a simple flamethrower.
What kills most of the good stuff is an enormous amount of jank. Poor controls, constant switching between the first and third-person view, wonky physics that make some sequences of the game infuriating as hell, poor melee combat... the list can go on and on forever.
So, why recommended? If you can stomach its faults, you'll get to enjoy a unique survival horror game. Due to its less than stellar performance on the market and poor reviews, most of its concepts remain underexplored among other horror games, which is a shame.
Note: I've heard that the PS3 version received additional content and improvements, but I've never played it.

It's a long time since I've been asked to insert a CD key code to start a game and the first time that one's started with the mouse Y-axis inverted. Graphics were what you might expect for a game of its age, and the controls generally not very responsive. What did it for me was when you pick up an object, follow the instructions for how to use it and ... nothing happens.
Not a game I could recommend whatever the discount.

- The game wont start out of the box... when you download and run it, the first thing you will see is game crash..

- The controls are a disaster
Sorry... Definitely wont recommend this game.

Awful story, awful characters, awful gameplay, awful ending. awful open world, awful monster designs, awful dialogue. The controls are also terrible. It is a chore to do anything in this game The game is also severely buggy and you can't change the resolution without crashing. Game runs like garbage also. The game also has Securom which is awful.
The game also pads its own run time by 5 hours by forcing you to run around an empty world killing these stupid plant roots. DO NOT BUY THIS GAME!!! EVEN IF YOU ARE A HUGE FAN OF ALONE IN THE DARK!!! IT IS NOT WORTH IT!!!!

great story with twists , good characters , smart puzzles , intense boss fights (even though one of them is not included in steam version) , + it have one of the best soundtracks i ever heard in my life!.
this game best description is a horror uncharted,
if you can get used to the controls and camera like me you will have a good time.
tip = using a controller helps , it does support it. all what you have to do is remap any button on keyboard to a controller button and it will change automatically.

Whilst I've only played 6 minutes total of this game, I will say that I like the premise to the game and the blinking mechanic is intriguing and a pretty neat mechanic to have included. The voice acting is decent for its time, as are the graphics. A negative I have (aside from my very first point) is that the controls are quite clunky, so I would advise playing this with a controller plugged in if you buy this game.
Unfortunately it seems this is a game plagued with issues, and it's a shame because it seems like it would be a decent game if it wasn't for FPS issues, intermittent crashing, the game not starting up to begin with, etc. etc.

+Highly interactive world
+Great graphics (it still looks good in 2020)
+Amazing soundtrack
+Immersive inventory and healing systems
+Crafting system that isn't cumbersome.
+Edward Carnby voiced by legendary James McCaffrey (voice of Max Payne)
Back then there was no other game with the amount of features like in AitD. But of course Alone In The Dark 2008 is infamous for its clunky controls and bugs. I understand how a bad control scheme can break the whole experience, I dropped some games in the past for the same exact reason.
If you willing to take some time to get used to controls and if you manage to launch this game without any hiccups you may find survival horror like none other. I guess it's the same case as with Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners Of The Earth - cool and innovative ideas that fell flat because of poor implementation. Some will look past these issues, some will drop playing Alone In The Dark because of these issues. And in both cases players would be right. Maybe it's nostalgia, maybe it's a fact that I was hyped for this game but I'm in the camp of people who like this game.

There are two views. Third person view is tank controls. If it was only that it would be fine, but the way you use weapons in this view is very annoying, and you are locked in this view for melee. The first person view is much better, but the game insists on taking you off it all the time. I don't know why they even implemented first person if the game appears not to want you to use it.
The game is also broken and needs a workaround to run without crashing due to graphics card issues.

P.S. To people who don't know how to run this game and posting negative review because of that:
1: Download d3d9 wrapper fix
2: Extract from archive
3: Copy two files (d3d9.dll and d3d9.ini) from the archive to the game main directory
4: Enjoy the game without crashing etc.

I have given this game a second chance - the first was shortly after purchasing it, the second around when this review was posted - and honestly I do not like it. I sort of see what they were originally attempting to do and it would likely have worked fairly well on console - yes, this is a port and not an example of a great one - but in practice on PC it just feels clumsy & clunky.
As I attempted to run this on fairly modern hardware for the second attempt to play it I ran into problems, which I would expect to likely occur to others, as the game does not know what to do with modern hardware.
You will need to check the pc gaming wiki for alone in the dark 2008 fixes to see if you can get it working as the game crashed to desktop every single time I tried to view display options through there may be other things you can try.
Then when & if you get it working - not as nice looking as it could be if your screen is designed for high resolutions - you then have to deal with the fact the game will only play with a controller, with an xbox controller strongly recommend, through the main menu works with a mouse.
If you have read this far:
You would be better off playing the console version if you have modern hardware.
