Über das Spiel

A suspicious suicide. A chilling curse. A malevolent power. Finally, a wicked dark secret. This is Derceto, a legendary Louisiana mansion where, against your better judgment, you're drawn into a world of shadows to explore the darker side of Jeremy Hartwood's imagination.

Despite a paralyzing sense of personal danger, your quest for truth drives you to investigate the old house. But, you didn't know that, by entering Derceto, you'll be plunged into the daily nightmare that was Jeremy Hartwood's life. You weren't prepared for the torturous howls that resound from deep within its halls. You didn’t foresee the shadowy corridors that seemingly have no end. You couldn't anticipate the brooding, gloom-filled rooms, the pervasive weight of dread, the heavy sense of evil that gills the atmosphere and the very house itself.

Had you known, you might have refused this task. But alas, you accepted, and now you must make your way through this spine-tingling adventure alone... and in the dark.

  • The grand-daddy of survival horror genre
  • A memorable soundtrack, excellent voice acting, and a thrilling story will keep you hooked for hours
  • Inspired by H.P. Lovecraft's universe, where ancient evils of unimaginary power play with human lives
  • Includes Jack in the Dark bonus adventure

Ein alter Klassiker, welchen ich schon als Jugendlicher vor mehr als 20 Jahren gespielt habe. Ist quasi ein Vorreiter von Resident Evil. Alone in the Dark 1 ist einfach ein tolles Spiel

How many works of art can you say actually changed the way you looked at a medium? Frédérick Raynal's boldly innovative game (developed by a crack team at Infogrames) challenged the status quo of how one interacted with 3D games. A progenitor of the survival horror genre (alongside Capcom's Sweet Home for the NES), and a key influence on the early Resident Evil games, Alone in the Dark's fixed cameras comandeered the player's view control and introduced a variety of static shots which the game would transition between as the player character traversed the world.

From a modern gameplay standpoint, it's broken and illogical in many places - the control system is unreliable (try triggering the 'run' action) and byzantine ('pushing' a particular object requires two levels of menus and finding the right button combination in-world), the clues are obscure and the traps are unheralded (and frequently immediately deadly (which gives them a somewhat perverse delight...!)).

But the visuals more than compensate for the rusty controls - the backgrounds by Yael Barroz are strikingly beautiful renditions of a plantation manor gone to seed, and the player characters and monsters modelled by Franck de Girolami are simple but effective - evocative of the 20's period and their Lovecraftian/Petersonian inspiration. Special mention must go to the writing and mansion layout by Hubert Chardot and Franck Manzetti and the delightfully hammy readings and performances of the material - which vividly bring the work to life!

Recommended - you'll find this game illuminating!

While I've played alone in the dark in the past, this is the first time I've put in the time to try and complete it. One college try later I find myself hesitating severely to actually recommend the game. In the end, I've decided that this game is worthwhile for a very niche audience, but everyone else should probably skip.

Alone in the Dark is the granddaddy of the Survival-Horror genre. Fixed camera angles, clunky combat with a strong focus on resource management, and even puzzles are present here. For someone that loved the 90s era of horror, it was remarkable to see how well this game held up. It looked good, it controls wonky but functional, had strong audio design and absolutely nailed the entire horror theme. Heck, I jumped at a couple points.

But for every

The combat is the first major hurdle to overcome. Most of the fighting you'll do is either fist fighting or one of a few melee weapons. Hold the button and tap and arrow to trigger 3 specific moves. When you get the hang of it you feel like you're in control and can defend yourself against the most dangerous of monsters.

But its all shot to heck by stun lock mechanics. It's not unusual for you to take one hit only to get locked in a combination that will leave you heavily wounded if not outright kill you. You end up having to rely on saving before every combat because you can't afford to take any hits for risk of a lock.

Ranged combat is a thing too, but ammo is limited and the lack of autoaim makes it frustrating to hit a target even in the best of times.

The second hurdle is the puzzle design. On the bright side, MOST of the puzzles aren't moon logic and few of them are actually required.

You can either fill a jug with water and use it to put out a lit cigar, or you can just hurry through the room to avoid dying of the haunted smoke inhalation. A painting of an Indian fires an arrow at you? Not if you shoot an arrow into it first! Hungry zombies sitting around a dinner table

Puzzles like these are probably the high point of the game for me. Solve a puzzle to save health and ammunition.

But you'll also encounter enemies that can't be killed despite showing all the signs of taking damage. You'll find fragile required items that can be broken when you take a hit forcing you to start over. You'll encounter holes in the floor or doors that open into death killing you immediately without a clue. Or, as I learned, you can miss required items and be unable to beat the game at a far later point. (I'd made it to the final room of the game before I realized I missed a key)

I highly advise you to use a walkthrough to avoid endlessly restarting and frustrating trial and error. Instant death traps and unwinnable positions are not fun. The joy of solving the clever puzzles is outweighed by the punishment from the BS ones.

If you are fanatical about old school survival-horror and want to see it's impressive beginnings you'll get your money's worth with Alone in the Dark. But if you're just looking to have fun this isn't the best choice.

Great-grandfather of survivor horror.
Allow yourself to get involved in the story and the lovecraftian mythos at its best.
I swear to god that I got so carried away playing this yesterday that I think I woke up in the middle of the night scared of sounds and shadows inside my house.

Probably the first survival horror games ever made and boy they done it right!
Great atmosphere, amazing graphics for the time, the sounds and music so creepy that it actually gives me chills till this day.
The stories are quite familiar and considered to be a classic horror stories taken from known books.
The puzzles are freaking insanely hard, and the games (1,2,3) as a whole are not easy at all to say the least.
I'm ashamed to admit that I never managed to finish any of them as a kid but oh man now that iv'e done it it was quite a ride, an epic blast from the past!

10/10 to the series AITD 1,2&3.

Twenty-eight years of going back to this gem and I still feel the palpable tension moving around Derceto. This is the Citizen Kane of survival horror games, ladies & gentlemen.

Not only is Alone in the Dark an absolute classic, it manages to survive its own limitations. It’s a distinct game, where one can clearly see the outdated graphics and somewhat primitive movement/combat mechanics, but still not be bothered by it. Only games with a strong personality can do that.

Don’t be intimidated by the “puzzles”, try to self-gimp and play without looking for solutions on the Internet. It will be worth it. Like many contemporaries, Alone in the Dark nails the principle of ‘failing is also part of the fun’. The house is vast and there are many approaches to progression.

This Steam version brings the updated version of 1994 from Interplay, with full, amazing voice acting, especially Edward Carnby (one of the possible protagonists) and, of course, Jeremy Hartwood outstanding delivery. The many books found through the game come to life in this version. That alone can be a reason for a fresh playthrough.

Chalk up another game for your ‘must-have / historical landmark’ category, even if survival horror is not your style.

Classic masterpiece, it takes me back to when I first played it back in the day and would be stuck for over a week trying to figure out what to do, and when I finally figured something out it was such an achievement; there was no internet back then. I did have to patch it though to get the original midi music and eliminate that HORRIBLE voice acting on the documents, what were they thinking?

I bought this game as like many people it was a game of my youth, i played it with my dad. I really enjoyed playing the game again, the game was made in 1992 so obviously the graphics are not amazing (ground breaking at the time) you read books to gather lore info, these are read out to you. I really enjoyed playing but it does take a while to get used to sprinting if it helps anyone the controls are as follows (basics)

up - Forward
Down - Back
Left - Turn left
Right - Turn right

Enter - Inventory
In inventory - Selecting Action changes you to combat stance or search stance/push/jump
Hold space bar to search/push/jump
Hold space while in action stance then up/down/left/right arrow to do different moves

The ancient 3D makes it a hard game to play, and everything seems to kill you instantly or quickly. But if you want a hard puzzle game, this fits the bill.

Really enjoyed the game and didn't mind it's looks at all... That is until I suddenly can no longer pick up items from the floor (the window does not show up) which made it impossible to complete the game. Searched the internet for fixes or anything and nothing else shows up. Started a new game to see if re-installing would fix it and the game worked fine on that new save.
Nothing annoys me more than losing all my progress and this game just caused that.

Alone in the Dark 1 proves to be an incredibly inventive title for its time but not quite to the point where it justifies playing the game today. It's illuminating to see what it brought to the table for following generations of survival horror games. Hence, the main source of enjoyment lies in recognising the many pioneering ideas of the developer. Besides that, though, the gameplay is too rough to be any fun at all.

The dynamic 3D polygon models clash with the static 2D backgrounds which results in an intriguing presentation. The models look grotesque albeit in a more hilarious than horrifying way. It's still no doubt impressive but the effect is completely different from its intention. Not only the models themselves but the selections of types of enemies, of background music and of camera angles are a huge conglomeration of things that make sense and things that don't. It's a stylistic hotchpotch, almost mockingly so and of dubious sincerity. Seemingly tongue-in-cheek are also the performances of the voice actors. They definitely inhabit their roles to the highest degree through comical overacting. All that slapped onto a Lovecraftian story frame and the player is sure to be left baffled.

Similarly, the gameplay is all over the place. The controls are dreadful with no saving grace. There are several problems coming together. First, the protagonist is painfully sluggish with slow motion animations and tank controls. Second, the perspective is more aligned with the artistic representation of the environment than any notion of practicality. The player's ability to work with any given camera angle is an afterthought here. These two alone make the combat, of which there's a lot, and the platforming, of which there's some, unbearably cumbersome. Lastly, the vague hints in the writing and the graphically limited environment make the puzzles harder than they should be. It's often not entirely clear what the pixels are supposed to represent. Finally solving a puzzle is fun, getting there is not.

This version also comes with Jack in the Dark, a short teaser focused on puzzles and released before the sequel. If anything, Alone in the Dark 1 is the best of the initial series. Indeed it's amusing and offers insights into the origin of survival horror games. Still, it's one of the glorified classics of the early 90s that require the mentality of hardcore nostalgics to actually play through with enjoyment.

A unique game that created the survival horror genre and it was way ahead of its time. Characters from polygons in 2D prerendered background images and a story that is heavily influenced by the works of H. P. Lovecraft created a horrifying atmosphere.

So you like games that doesn't hold your hand? Well, this may not be for you. But don't get me wrong: this game will not hold your hand, it will break finger by finger.

Even if it doesn't require much dexterity, it requires a lot of attention and thought. There's a great thing about this game, and it's the one thing that makes it hard, which is the freedom it gives on going very wrong. It will not hint you where to go, and there are things that lock the game in a state where you can't win anymore, and you won't even know that.

I admit. I had to get some outside hints. I locked myself too many times. But I regret nothing, and would play another game like this. Im general it is a good game where you don't just go running and pressing buttons. You think every action.

The graphics are very old, so don't expect much, and the sound effects are also what was doable at that time. It's a retro that has it's own charm.

I have to admit I did not expected much of this game
I bought it on sale and didn't even realized it came as an anthology.

That said, I'm amazed by the quality in almost every aspect of the game!
For a game made in 1992 it has some of the most incredible 3D graphics I've seen in an game that old, Some of the mechanics in this game are things I didn't even thought were possible back then!
I have no words to explain how technically awesome this piece of art is but you can see it for yourself.

Truly one of the most underrated games I've played and an absolute pillar of the industry!

Before Resident Evil arrived on the scene was Alone in the Dark. The concept is pretty much the same it’s just this game feels much more difficult and to be honest, a lot creepier.

The controls are awkward and some of the animations feel like your character has a back brace on but if you can look past these, the game is truly great.

You receive little to no guidance and a lot is just left for you to puzzle out yourself. I died twice in the first room because I didn’t use my brain, it’s that sort of game. Enemy comes through the window? Push a cabinet in front quickly, enemy comes through the trapdoor? Push a box on top of it to stop it opening. It’s things like these which are obvious, but game these days don’t let you think for yourself and instead hand you a weapon.

Some of the deaths so far I’ve had; fallen through the floor, killed by a ghost, killed be a painting throwing an axe at me, killed by a worm, killed by a spider, killed by a damn book. This game really tests you.

The sound effects were amazing for their time and are still great to this day.

If you can look past the rough edges and like a good survival horror game, give this game a go. I played it when I was younger and loved it and now fully grown I still love it, I just suck at it now.

My playthrough can be seen here;

Good memories... approx 24 years back in time. Hours after hours trying to solve the puzzles, but never made it. Too hard. The first horror game i have ever played. I remember the anxiety every time I had to face those corridors, locked doors, monsters that seemed quite real at that time. Today it does not feel the same but the scary feeling I remember is still there. Almost a perfect game, it does not deserve to be forgotten.

Father of all Survival Horrors. (Yes I know about Sweet Home but it is a Horror RPG, still excellent anyway).

* Full of puzzles. Like RE1 2 chars, a man and a woman to choose.
* Lots of enemies, undead, gowls, werewolves, zombies, etc.
* Huge mansion to explore, again like RE with a lot of surrounding areas, underground, outside, etc.
* Great Story. You collect info by reading notes and books.

The only cons I find is the fact that graphics are obviously outdated but once you are on the run the game will trap you and keep you till you finish it.
On the same way, it does not support Steam overlay, so you'll have to find a special guide to upload SS.

I recommend getting the anthology, with the AitD1, AitD2, AitD3 and the newest AitD. But this is my favourite one ever.

MUST HAVE. (If you are into Survival Horror Games).

Derceto awaits you. Buy it now!!

Alone in the Dark 1992 is the best game in the series IMO and is honeslty the only game in the series I have ever really liked. It was scary, fun, unpreditable, and downright intresting in everyway. Tho the graphics and it's controls are pretty bad by todays standards it was ahead of it's time and made surivial horror games famous. Here's a list of it's good and bad points

GOOD:
>>Impressive visuals for it's time
>>Great music and sound effects
>>Scary(Which is quite a rare thing for horror games these days)
>>Good atsomphere
>>Good storyline
>>Two characters to play with
>>Good weapons and impressive gameplay at the time it was out
>>Monsters are cool

BAD:
>>Controls are dated and tank like
>>Graphics haven't aged well

Overall This is a great game and anybody who enjoys horror games that can look past it's graphics and get used to it's controls will find a gem that's worth there time.

A true masterpiece from the 90s, and one that is part of my childhood. This game will make no excuses for your ineptitude, and will reward you for your ingenuity. If you're a fan of classic adventure games, and perhaps a slight bit of a masochist, this game is certainly not going to disappoint you.
