I never completed this game because the last level has a platforming part where you have to posses a demon, get scripted killed, then posses a smaller demon, then jump on a ledge that is as wide as a tree branch.... mind you the demons run and jump are off.....
If you miss the jump you fall off the map and die. And you have to do the entire part over.......... including the painfully slow walking in a giant demons body just to get script killed and posses the small demon to redo the platforming part until you get to the skinny fucking ledge........
fucking shit fuck this game's controls!!!!

There seems to be a good amount of replay as well. The main story will take you about 10 hours to complete if you're like me and slowly take in all the scenery. There are also many secrets, hidden chambers, items to collect and many unlockables. There's even a couple different modes that significantly change the way the game is played.
I got the game for about 5 bucks which is a steal but I would definitely pay full price. Highly recommended if you're interested in trying something a little morbid and extreme.

Becomes dull after a while, fairly long exploration-puzzle game with easily over 10 hours of content.
Apparently this game received several post-release patches that added significant amount of content.

Its mix of gore, atmosphere, designs and mythology should have been a slam dunk for me.
However, this is the worst piece of jank I have ever had the displeasure of playing. I pushed through confusing, poorly optimized gameplay in hopes that the good moments (and there were good moments) would soon add up. What I got was more and more jank.
I... I just can't go on playing this. It was the tenth time I fell to my death during a limited vision, bad controls, bad level geometry, parkour session against what I assume to be the final boss, when I was once again brought into a combination of cutscenes and non-interactive walking sections that add up to over 1 minute, that I finally gave up.
This game is bad. It's really, really bad. You will get stuck on random pixels. You will never ever see a smooth transition to a cutscene or new level. You will never want to explore because exploring is too dangerous and tedious.
God damn it, I wanted to love this...

This game reminds me of nothing so much as a teenage dungeon master who, inspired by several elements, masturbated furiously over several solid plot ideas until they gelled into a cohesive campaign storyline. He (not to be sexist, but lets face it, most of the themes herein could only originate in the mind of teenage boys in the throes of puberty) then finds a single person to run through his campaign. You, the player.
What proceeds to happen is a railroad fiasco, where he describes an overly detailed description of where you are at the moment, but you quickly realize that, ultimately, nothing you do matters. You quickly develop tunnel vision, and learn the best tactic is to run through. The dungeon master is ok with that as well, because it just means he gets to move on to flaunt his next fleshed-out scene.
mechanics to engage you in cruelty - ultimately pointless and bypassed. Item collection - at best, meh. While I did like the (possibly unintentional) theme that your death is inevitably irrelevant, the tedium of die-wash-rinse-repeat gets old fast.
The mechanic that drew me in - possessing others, including demons, is actually a dead end. a. you need a martyr's (read: random tenant of hell that apparently just hangs out, usually with a bag over their head and filled with useless babbling) body to engage in pick-ups. Demon bodies can't. They can't even take the bags off of martyr's heads, a necessary element to take them over once you're ejected from the demon body.
The advantages of the demons fade quickly. Usually in environmental destruction that, if you get too far away looking for a martyr's body (and don't just Timer-Die), the environment resets. Instead you look for ways to avoid taking demon bodies, run through and unbag as many martyrs as possible, just in case.
Which gets to the railroad-y just run through mechanic. Nothing I did meant anything. Light people on fire? Ok, pointlessly cruel, but hey, your here in hell. Except it just makes them an annoying stationary lightsource, which will reset when you die, and ultimately has no true consequences, good or bad. The few door/lock macguffins are simply run back and forth, grab a baby, toss it into the hand. You don't have to leave the room. The sigil mechanic was/is inspired, except the engagement is 'just find the right one nearby'. Another tedium of running back and forth.
The demons, which are your primary enemy, are one-shot-kill dumb-cannons. Aside from their asthetics, if they get you, you're dead. General pathing, 100% avoidance.
And, the cutscenes. Early on you get a taste of what is going to be your ultimate goal. All interaction of choice is taken from you as, basically you spectate transitions, level termination points, and final battles. But hey, there's a bunch of number metrics to look over at the end.
Overall I find it bitterly ironic, that this hell-themed game made me realize an aspect of what might be a real hell for me; a game of sub par storyline, where the protagonist's actions, choices and goals are ultimately pointless to the end plot, other than the face that you got there, eventually.

As I said in this beginning, not a game for everyone. This game is ALL about those demons and Hell. HUGE sexual content is in this game. Does not turn away from the point of the game. Can be frightening at times and the story can be interesting.
I love the content that this game does provide. I also love that it breaks the common standard to where you do not expect what is going to happen next. The creators were not shy when it came to developing this game.
The graphics are not the best around, but it does have a certain feel to keep you interested. I would recommend trying it out. It's definitely worth the $15.

Also, there may be mild spoilers, but nothing that wasn't included in the trailers.
Well, this game was something. It took me about 15 hours to complete, and that's including making some effort to aquire secrets and collectables that were obvious or easily accessible. I hardly scratched the surface in that department, though. The length felt just right. In fact, it left me craving more, but fortunately I have plenty of collectables to go back and find and alternative game modes.
This is a rather unique horror game. The first half plays like amnesia, wherein you explore the environment and hide when a monster comes into view. The second half, however, is almost a different game entirely. You are granted the ability to take control of the very monsters that are trying to kill you. Death is no longer consequential most of the time, and you don't have to worry about hiding because if anything kills you, you can just possess it.
Visually, this game is spectacular. The graphics are just a little fuzzy, but the colors and imagery are vibrant and brimming with detail. As implied by the game's rating (or lack thereof), there is some rather graphic content. As someone desensitized to horror, I found it to be more gross than scary. Still, it was rather refreshing to see a game try and push itself so far. The lore is also very interesting, it kept me moving forward during times when the game got tedious. Speaking of tedium, probably the weakest point of this game is the gameplay itself. They do a good job of keeping things fresh by including a lot of variety, but not everything works. There are segments in the game (especially in the first half) where death reverts a great deal of progress and you have to go through and do everything all over again. It does make the game more intense at first, but it gets old fast.
Overall, the game is very flawed but I still quite enjoyed it. I would recommend buying it when it's on sale.

The idea of exploring some realm of hell is interesting as a game concept and the option of playing AS a demon on some modes is also an intriguing path to experiment with...
But while the graphics are USUALLY well done the game itself is... not.
Slow, clunky movement (even as a succubus); a story that is apparently present but is distant and dissociated enough to be essentially absent unless you go looking for it; and so much darkness that it's hard to see or appreciate the attention to detail in the surroundings.
And here's the thing: I LIKE the idea of having games out there that rolls their eyes at all the artificial morality censors. I like that some games push around to see what they can do if they aren't straining not to offend a bunch of people who will... probably be offended anyway. I WANT to see a good game with interesting dynamics and new ideas!
...but this isn't it.
There's a difference between not worrying about offending people and going out of your way to make something as offensive as possible. The organic, semi-living feeling of the hell depicted in this game is interesting and makes me want to explore it more, but the gameplay and raw, visceral disgust some of the content provokes in me (not an easy thing to do, by the way) just makes me want to put the game down and do what I'm going to do once I finish writing this: Uninstall it without even trying to finish it.
I gave myself a good long time to think before writing this.
I tried to give it a few second chances.
I tried different game modes like the succubus mode (which I do want to see some GOOD version of the idea of, by the way).
This game has some good ideas.
It has some good graphics (but some not so much).
It's an interesting step and an interesting attempt. I hope the devs do manage to create some good games. I hope they manage to make something... better than this.
But I can't recommend this game.

People also complain about the demon timer, I think its good because it forces you to kill humans in exchange for temperary super powers, if you kill those humans you have less potential revives which makes you somewhat strategize what you need to do. Its not an entirely linear game like I thought. I fell off the damn staircase trying to escape because i suck at parkour and got sent to this frozen layer of hell I have not experienced before.
I have yet to beat the game. Though it may be tedious, it does give off a rewarding feeling

Yes there is gore, sexual violence, sex, violence and much more but that's hell, where the game is set, it isn't meant to be pleasant. I have enjoyed the game so far, controlling multiple daemons and such and am looking forward to Madmind Studio's Succubus.

The AI is so OP there's no point trying to stealth most of the time. They also have a really bad habit of glitching out and just staying in really tight corridors that are often your only way forward. You're kind of forced to just rush through the game, which is a shame because you miss a lot of the scenery. It has regular bugs, terrible check point placement and you're constantly getting stuck on the floor and objects.
When you get to possess demons it's not as fun as it should be. You become majorly disadvantaged as you can't pick up collectables or power up items. You also lose the map and any guidance you may have in the maze-like levels. Time as a demon is limited, using powers loses time, it takes so long to possess that it becomes a chore of constantly repossessing the creature rather than just having fun as a beast. The whole time constraints thing seems a bit silly when you are often forced to be human to get to other areas anyway. Having unlimited time and being able to freely hop from one NPC to another at a button press would've been the way to go, but alas it's not the case.
Even being human has it's fair share of issues. Losing your torch will make some areas completely impassable. This wouldn't be an issue if torches where everywhere but they are extremely scarce. Your only guidance besides a map, that you can never see a full version of, is a limited use path tracker, which is possibly the most baffling thing in the game, like, who does that?!?
I had high hopes for this game and I can usually let issues slide if it's infrequent and doesn't ruin my overall enjoyment. That said, I simply can't recommend something that becomes increasingly annoying to play because of how badly it's designed.

First and foremost, it would be nice if there was a middle choice when rating games, like “Maybe” or “My Experience”. I don’t believe this game deserve a not recommend, but on the same breath, I also don’t recommend the game as enjoyable either.(at first) Ill explain both points in my review, so lets get on with it.
Pros:
The graphic were pretty descent for a game of this type. Lots a nude strange creatures to aww at. There is plenty to do, lots of collectibles to get. Each room had its own uniqueness to it. Has a nice first person feel to it.( Would be a great VR game!!) When the devs say for “adults only” it means “adults only”. I tend to lean more towards games like this because I enjoy uncensored games and darn it I want adult content!. Doesn’t mean that there always good, but I will give it a chance, much like I did this game.
Cons:
The game start right out of the gate with very few basic tutorials how to play. What we have here is a game set in hell because Nimrod (the name is very fitting)made a deal with with the under world boss guy.(Why? I don’t know and I don’t believe it ever tells either. Im certain it has to do with power) There is no back story as to how you got to where you are, you have to learn that on your way.(and it is very poorly executed, basically everyone hates you) The problem is, about a quarter of the way in, your already frustrated and really don’t care about the story anymore and just want to know what it is exactly you are suppose to be doing. Why might you be frustrated only a quarter of the way in? Like some of the negative reviews say “Controls”. I really think the controls are fine but the terrain is of something else. Constantly getting stuck and having to try and jump your way out. Always dark,(which can be fixed by turning the gamma up to max, and I would recommend doing so, game is still dark) which is ok, but the path should at least be some what smooth. I felt like I was being pushed through the game and never had a good chance to look around, I think this is do to the fact when you die(and you will) it takes you back to the last check point. If you don’t mind dying several hundred times then explore away. This bring me to what I believe annoys every gamer, “The die and try tactic”. What this means basically is your trying to figure out what to do and you die a lot to advance in the game. This game is full of this and if anyone tells you different they are full of it or they have watched game play before playing!! There is no straight and narrow path to follow, lots of path to go down that most likely end in death. You get one direction at the beginning of each chapter after chapter 1 “Oh! You made it, well meet me here”. Oh, you can use the blue light thingy, that really don’t work that good.
The ending was a tragic train wreck!! What was the point? The devs could of just ended it when you finally made it to The Red Goddess and would of made just as much sense. (There is some sort of message there.)
Collectibles and achievements, for get about it, best I can say for this if your heart is set on getting them, READ A COLLECTIBLE GUIDE for this game!! I was never able to open a golden door, why?, it never tells you how or even give you a clue.(After watching a video, I guess your Soul Vision is the way you open doors, would of never guess that, Soul Vision translate to Door Opener) By this point I didn’t care and had to save what energy I had left to finish the game. And believe me, it is going to take a lot of shear will to push you through the last half of the game.
Conclusion:
While you spend most of the time clueless and frustrated through the game, I feel it is worth at least a one time go(all content). To be honest, if you only play the walk through, it not very exciting, you do need to play the rest of the content to see what the game really does offer. Might have a different opinion. After playing the first time around and having a better understanding of what you are doing, it might not be as bad the second time around. There are many different endings that are cool to get. What nice about it is you don't have to replay the whole game(just jump around to each chapter that you need to go to),well you do with the succubus, but that goes much quicker.(maybe 2 hours tops) When most people get a bad taste for a game right out of the box, they tend to stick with that feeling and not willing to give it a second chance, and I believe this is what you have to do for this game. Play once and get your bearings on the game and then play again to give an honest review. Like I said in the beginning, it not a thumbs up(first play through) and it not a thumbs down(second play through), but more of here is what I experienced while playing. You may have a different experience while playing, but this is what to be on the look out for. I think most everyone can agree the first play through is just a walk through with one Boss fight at the end of chapter 1.The game is playable and a bit frustrating, and with out any other option this why I picked recommend.
I give this a game 7/10 rating.

When I learned that so many people have negative things to say about this game, I knew I should make my own review. I DO recommend this game. Here is why.
I've played Agony and Agony UNRATED to 100% completion, with over 70 hours played in the two combined. You can trust I know what I'm talking about, as opposed to someone who played a few hours and rage quit.
When I first started, I did have some problems, but they are easily fixed. For starters, I do recommend using a much higher light setting than the game tells you to, or you'll be basically blind for most of the game. It's an easy-to-use slider and fixes most of the issues. The second main issue is dying. That's also simple. Everything kills you, so don't be dumb. You can play slowly and cautiously, but you can also get away with rushing through parts. Most of the enemies can be outrun, and all you need is to lose them. The game has many places to hide. Some traps and map elements can also kill you, but they generally are avoidable. Game progress is always saved, and the worst case scenario is you may have to redo a bit.
The main criticism seems to be that the gameplay is bad, and I just don't agree. There are many kinds of games, and this one is obviously a story adventure. You have a set path to follow, and the game says so in the trailer, so there is no excuse for being a dick about it. In fact, there are 7 or 8 different endings, depending on the version, and hundreds of collectibles and hidden rooms, with dozens in each level. If you are bored by the game, you're playing it wrong. The theme of the game is to play a damned soul on his quest through Hell to discover his lost past and escape torment. In some of the endings, you can escape. In other endings, you can get dragged down to an even deeper Hell, give up on life and become a cosmic drug addict, or even become the King of Hell. Not to mention the succubus mode, where you get to seriously fuck shit up and kill anything you see. While most of the main game is playing as a frail human, you do get to possess and play as many different demons, including a giant beast of Hell that smashes the shit out of everything that you feared in the early game. The main theme, again, is simply enjoying the immersion and the story, and if you get into character then you really do feel as if you are in Hell yourself, and it is amazing. Anyone complaining about the gameplay is just... wrong.
The graphics are a bit unpolished and rough at times, with odd textures that seem random, but it can also serve to demonstrate the chaos and ugliness of Hell as it should be. (Keep in mind the game had to be completely remade from scratch multiple times, and you do get to see early versions in the gallery when you finish the game, which is very interesting to see what the game could have been.) Personally, I find the art of the game to be beautiful and an interestingly unique vision of Hell. I have taken over 800 screenshots in the game, every time I saw something I thought was beautiful.
The game is great, and if you want to focus on the things you don't like, then that's sad. If you want to enjoy the game, you will. It's up to you. It's really easy to enjoy, so just keep an open mind and prepare for Hell.
I hope the developers see this, because I want to let them know that even if many people are haters, I am very glad they made this game, and I am very very glad they are making more. I'll buy and play them all. This game is one of my favorites of all time for sure. Keep up the great work, and thank you for showing me your unique visions of Hell.

If you set your expectations accordingly, and you know what you're getting into (gameplay/content-wise) Agony is a neat purchase. Not gonna blow any minds, but it's a fun, nasty little diversion. I'll definitely be diving back in every now and then, exploring the game a little at a time.

There's no hand holding here, you're spat right into the bowels of hell, and there's no indication of how anything works or what you need to do. But it's Hell, and I doubt there's any kind of hand holding in Hell.
Once you start to get the hang of things, everything starts to make a bit more sense.
I'm having fun but again, it's really a weird game.

Everyone will; lead you to believe this is some amazing horror game but really its a walking simulator with horrible graphics and voice acting.
Watch a lets play of the game or something and you will see how bad it is. AI is broken, game has bugs and the uncensored version which everyone says is the true version thats better is just slightly more suggestive scenes which add nothing to the gameplay or atmosphere. Its really just 2 demons with no genitals dry humping.
I dont really tell people in reviews to avoid games even ones i dislike but this is the exception. Your wallet will thank you later and I only paid £1 for it.

Levels are mazes (in some case literally so) and filled with collectables, although none of them seem to have much in the way of gameplay benefit so I don't know why you would want to waste the time. There is an upgrade system, but most upgrades are either useless or just unlock when you reach the required point in the story. A handful let you see enemies and objects through walls, which is mildly helpful, but most just do things like increase your health, an odd upgrade when most obstacles are one hit kills regardless. Another increases your stamina which is used to sprint. In this stealth/puzzle game. Like if you are sprinting then it is almost certainly too late for any of these upgrades to matter, or you are supposed to be sprinting, in which case the game must be designed in such a way that anyone can complete the segment regardless of upgrade choices.
So no story, almost no gameplay, useless upgrades, not remotely scary, confusing, boring, and so buggy that I had to restart the first level three times before I managed to get to the end without it breaking. What utter tripe.

Sure, controls are clunky at times, optimization is not the best, there are some glitches around, and the map design can be confusing sometimes.
But the art-style, immersion and thematic had me hooked for the most part of the game, with a clear story line and develop of events. The small cinematics, variety of levels and enemies/mechanics were fun IMO.

It is so clear from looking at old gameplay vids to now, that the developers have been very hard at work. The game I experienced was nothing like what I saw on youtube.
This game genuinely had me coming back and wanting to get further and further. Sure, there are some frustrating sections and maybe some odd game mechanics at times but I think these developers truly made a great game that too many people are over looking based on reviews from when the game first launched.
The fact this team worked hard to right their wrongs speaks volumes to me and I think they're more than deserving of a second chance.
I will absolutely be playing through this again in the future and I look forward to what the team puts out next!

It does not help that the gameplay's issues and lack of polishing is adding to the mixed feelings.
If you are looking for some game to arouse you, I would not recommend it (well, unless you are twisted that way). Still, if you are looking for something new and somewhat interesting, you liked Dark Souls atmosphere and don't mind seeing people's genitalia, by all means - the game is worth playing.

-Do you want to experience one of the most creative and grotesque re-imaginings of Hell?
-Can you stomach overwhelming horrific visuals and sounds that might leave you mentally scarred or make you crazy?
-Do you like doing difficult puzzles in a dark, horrific settings that may turn you insane?
-Do you like t1ts?
If I had listened to the negative nancies, then I would have missed out on a very good psychological horror game. I decided to give Agony Unrated a try despite the mixed reviews expecting to be disappointed, but I actually found myself enjoying the game a lot. There is also a succubus mode which is a fun alternative to the normal mode, allowing you to explore Hell as a powerful succubus. Despite some minor bugs and frame rate drops in certain locations, I'm putting Agony Unrated as one of my top psychological horror games that I could play for hours and hours. Don't listen to the negative nancies; they sound like someone who can't be pleased with anything. If you like what you see, then just try Agony Unrated for yourself.

I get that this is supposed to be hell, but it's also supposed to be a playable game!
Definitely not full price. Maybe on deep sale, if you're curious and can handle the frustration. Hopefully they'll do better with the next one.

I don't get the comment of some selfimportant dude earlier who complains that the game drops you with no pointers, there's the lifeline thing, there's also a minimap, it shows everything, you can zoom out of it and see quite far.), but I've grown up in the 80s, I'm used to it. You gotta explore, you gotta walk in dark areas, you gotta slip past demons. You gotta read the notes. The aforementionned guy was complaining that he was picking up hearts and didn't know why, and he had no pointers. It's all there in the notes, but I assume he just skipped them. Gotta use your brains (and it's no deep brain-wracking either, it's pretty light really). Gotta use your brains. Harsh, I know.
It's not an easy game, but it's not particularly hard either. You can die a lot, but you only need to reach a martyr to keep going. It gets progressively easier as you gain new abilities. I did run into a couple bugs ( stuck in a tree, once, but luckily I was underwater, I drowned, that was it), but nothing game-breaking. The story is basic, not bad, not good, I'm not gonna spoil, but it's not difficult to guess where it's going, with the notes dropped around and the fact our guy has amnesia.
Visually, it's great, really. It also runs great with everything on max on my PC. Controlling one of those female demons is fun. You don't spend so much time in each chapter that you'll get bored of them.
My only realy gripe is the sigils. You gotta paint those with the mouse. It doesn't register very well to be honest, sometimes I had to do it a dozen times before it worked.
It's a pleasant trip, I suspect it won't last many many hours, which is fine by me, I'm looking for shorter games nowadays, I lose interest too fast and I'm too busy irl.
Not the game of the year, but a very decent one. I'd buy a sequel.

The red goddess is by far one of the best design-ideas in a long time.
The unrated update really demonstrated, that the developers learned their lessons.

The artwork is AMAZING, but the gameplay is mediocre at best... You can kinda say that playing this game feels like agony, if this was the purpose of this game they succeeded xD
