Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic ist der dritte Teil der preisgekrönten Fantasy Strategie Reihe. Dieser unter Fans favorisierte Teil, erweitert die in der Serie viel gepriesene Verschmelzung aus Aufbaustrategie, Rollenspiel und taktischen Gefechten, um die unheimliche Shadow World und Schlachten mit nie zuvor gesehenen Völkern in neuen und facettenreichen Landschaften.
Zusammen mit der Möglichkeit des Kartengenerators eine völlig einzigartige Umgebung zu erschaffen und mit dem verbesserten Kampagnen Editor die Geschichte dieser Welt neu zu schreiben, wird Ihnen ein beständiger Strom an völlig neuen Spielerfahrungen gewährleistet.

Haupteigenschaften:

Eine vollkommen neue Kampagne mit 5 Episoden und 16 Szenarios, neuen Charakteren und einer sich neu entwickelnden Story. 19 eigenständige Szenarios sind enthalten.
Änderungen bei den ursprünglichen 12 Age of Wonders Völkern. Jedes Volk hat ein neues Upgrade für die Stadt, welches mit einer neuen Einheit aufwartet. Beispielsweise können die Elfen einen geheimen Wald bauen, welcher die Stadt verhüllt und Waldwesen produziert.
Drei völlig neue Völker: die durch die Steppe wandernden Nomaden, die unheimlichen Schattendämonen und die aus dem Jenseits kommenden Syron.
Führen Sie bei Bedarf diplomatische Verhandlungen mit ihren Rivalen. Belagern Sie feindliche Städte mit einer sorgfältigen Abwägung zwischen taktischer List und magischen Verbesserungen. Es könnte Ihre Bestimmung sein der größte Zauber-König aller Zeiten zu werden.
Treten Sie ihren Rivalen im Mehrspielermodus für bis zu 8 Spieler über LAN oder Internet gegenüber - dies umfasst das Spielen über E-Mail, einen Hot Seat Modus und das spannende Simultaneous-Turn-System, welches allen Spielern erlaubt ihren Zug gleichzeitig zu machen.
Entwerfen Sie ihre eigenen Szenarios, Helden, Gegenstände und sogar neue Zauberer mit dem erweiterten Szenario Editor und fordern Sie andere Spieler heraus Ihre Kreationen zu besiegen.
Verwenden Sie den Zufallskartengenerator um Szenarios oder Mehrspieler Herausforderungen mit nur einem Klick zu erstellen.

with the windows 10 compatibility modes older games do not crash that often anymore.

this game is considered the best part of the series by many, has influenced the genre and it was considered the avatar of fantasy strategy for a long time.

essentially it is a reworked AOW2, but with some changes:
1.) draconian heroes are now floatinng instead of flying (which were OP beyond sanity... but damn fun if on your side)
2.) heroes now get to chose 1 out of 3 options on levelup, instead of getting 10 points you can either invest on whatever you want - or safe for bigger investment
3.) new additional layer for maps: shadow realm
4.) new playable race: shadow demons (insect-like creatures)
5.) new playable race: syrons (electrically glowing elf-alikes)

in my opinion the races have stylish arrtwork and it is a shame that they did not include them in the 3rd part. what i personally do not like about this game is that hero-levelling-system and that is actually all there is to criticize. in my opinion the more individual levelling-system plus the fact that you can create own races (and in that matter make your own dark elves, shadow demons, ...) makes the 3rd part superior.

nevertheless, this is a classic and every fan of tbs should know it.

Alt, aber gut. Die Musik ist gelungen, die Einheiten sind schick und noch lieber mag ich eigentlich nur H&M oder Lords of Magic spielen. Zumindest was diese Art der Spiele angeht. Alles in allem. Zugreifen!

Relativ altes, doch immer noch sehr geiles Spiel.
Werde ein Zauberer, behersche dein Element und dein Volk und überrenne deine Feinde.
Für jeden der rundenbasierte Fantasystrategiespiele mag ein absolutes muss ;)

I have been playing this game sine it was released - not just the 413 hours listed, and I still love it, and go back time and time again. I bought the game on Steam for convenience as much as anything as I have to travel to do my job. Buying it on CD, and again on Steam was a sound investment as far as getting my moneys worth from the game.

Fails to launch (black screen, a moment of sound). It was probably a great game once, but now it's just fiddling with settings, compatibility modes, unofficial patches, etc until you give up.

This game (2003) is an improvement of Age of Wonders 2 from 2002 . It has 3 more races making it total 15 . The original game had Earth Surface and Underground system of tunnels . Somewhat like Heroes of Might and Magic 3-4 . This one also adds Shadow Realm .
Obviously it has a new campaign and possibility to generate random scenarios . Generally it is a bit nostalgic but not too outdated fantasy epic strategy . Strangely enough I liked it more then Age of Wonders 3 (yes played that around 250 hours on this account but I played Shadow Magic in 2004+2010 two-three times more and I know where to get mods for Shadow Magic ) .
You have to get into this game in order to get pleasurable strategic experience, but it worth it .
I explain it in comparison: it is not Heroes of Might Magic 3, but it equals 70-75 percent of it and there is no other fantasy turn-based strategy which worth that much compare to HoMM3 .None other.
I will not talk about HoMM4 ,which is too deeply related to HOMM3 , but already HoMM5 ,at least without expansions,provides inferior gaming pleasure to that AoW SM provides .
I love sieges here when small, but well assorted, force of defending units can defeat bigger armies by right deployment of missile protected by tanking units

This game is absolutly perfect; probably one of the best turn-based strategy Games ever created.
Graphic aged very well, gameplay is aweseome. No idea about the story/SP campaign since I just play scenarios.
Very immersive and it has great RPG elements.

Sadly it seems to run on my machine only without Direct3D acivated, which means you loose lot of graphic quality. Very sad, as long there is no solution for this problem, I can't recommend :(

edit: found a solution to fix all graphic issues. Just use narzouls DDrawCompat v0.3.1. You should find it easily with google!

It's too good. Best game in the series and I never found anything quite like this again. It's a pity the community is almost dead, so buy this immediately to revitalize it, it's totally worth it. It seriously needs a remaster with a good and easy way to play online.

It's basically civilization with dragons and magic. All the civs are interesting and unique and there's always a lot of cool stuff to do.

Steam sees '15 minutes', but I've sunk over a thousand hours into this game via a hardcopy of the CD back in the day. This game gets compared to Heroes of Might and Magic strategy games a lot, which is a good comparison. But this game is better, hands down. More in-dept combat, city building, heroes, strategies, magic system... pretty much in every way. If you like strategy games, this is an absolute MUST-have.

Of all the Age of Wonders games, this is the one that really stood out to me. I really can't explain why. For most of the series, I'd just rather boot up HoMM3 or Master of Magic again.

But this one? I really like this one.

I've been playing this game off and on for many years now along with it's siblings. I highly recommend the age of wonders series to anyone who likes turn based strategy games with some light rpg elements. Even though the graphics are showing their age a bit, the game play is great and the campaign never gets old. A great old school strategy game.

It's an old game. The turns take forever. But I love this game. I like it better than AOW III, but then again I've played this so many years (I love making maps with the editor), I'm a bit biased.

Its very similar to the first age of wonders game. The sound effects and graphics show definite improvement. I absolutely love the new wizards tower mechanics along with the shadow demon storyline. Overall it is a worthy follow up for the original games.

For a newcomer or an older adult who is not adept at these type of games (which describes me), this is a good introduction. Instructions are clear. There are various levels of engagement. And most importantly, the narratives are interesting and fun to interact with. The Age of Wonders series of games still seem to have relevancy. I am aware that that quality of games have improved drastically since this was released, but nevertheless, I am enjoying it.

Good game, sadly a little bit laggy for me nowadays, probably due windows 10 compatibility or smth. But I am a long-time fan of AoW, especially 1, 2 and SM are gooooooooooooooooooood!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you like tbs and 'fantasy' races, get this, it is amazing, I spent 1000's of hours on this with friends and family before steam ever existed. It is truly in the league of HOMM3.

I have to say, this game is the end all, be all for turn based strategy games for me. As a long time fan of Heroes of Might and Magic 3, as well as other less well received TBS games, this one continues to shine and take up space on my hard drive. This purchase marks the 3rd time that I've bought the game. One hard copy, once on GOG, and now the steam version, almost soley so that I can review this bad boy. First of all, forget the campaigns. Games like these were MADE for the random maps. The campaigns, while entertaining, are really just long tutorials to ready you for the random map generator, which is where this game shines. 12 races, multiple combinations of magi, and a multitude of play styles lay before you. That enemy city before you just a little too tough to take? Scorch their lands and transform them to deserts and watch their populace riot from their discontent at their new, inhospitable world. A mountainrange in your way? Level the terrain and march your troops across it, backdooring your opponent into new depths of discontent. That being said, play it with your friends to elevate this game to the height that it deserves. This is the ultimate multiplayer strategy game. Get your friends together and LAN this game. You won't regret it.
After purchasing AOW III, I have to admit, while that game IS awesome, I still make time in my day to go back to Shadow Magic. It's well worth the time. Every fucking time. Stop reading this now and go buy this game. If you're a turn based strategy person, or just a strategy gamer at all, you owe it to yourself to play this game. Good luck, and may your wizard towers provide you all the spell range you require!

Disclaimer: I have literally played hundreds (and I don't mean one or two) of hours of this game and expect to play hundreds more. Buy it. you won't regret it.

Insane fantasy 4x game with great multiplayer options!!! Random scenario generation and MODs make for tons of fun but beware, it's is quite difficult. Scales well to 1080p despite being ~12 years old.
