A little & lonely Journey into the deep Darkness of Emptiness.

You are Auk a Pilgrim with the Ability to transform into a Bird.

Now you need to visit 3 Temples, for that you need to find 3 Keys.

There are a lot of Informations & Secrets to Discover.

How you can do something, that never did before. Win an impossible Fight that brings Balance and Harmony or a sad End?

+++ easy 100 % Steam Achievements

++ nice Graphics if you like it, could have more to discover and more Details (sometimes a little bit emty)

++ 6 Trading Cards

++ good Level Design/ nice little Puzzles (Keys/ Temples)

+ fine Sound

- a bit to short if you rush through the Game

- no Save Points you can keep

- no Secrets after the Ending (unreadable Lighttower Stones & other Stuff), not really long Happy Ending Cutszene

Good for Achievement Hunters, Trading Card Collectors, Walking-Flying-Simulator Explorers

Its maybe not a Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword, but for some Players an Indie Pearl

Thx 4 reading. Hope you enjoy it. Happy Gaming. GL & HF <3

Also.

It's a beautiful game with one big negative point:
- unused potential

The gameplay is rather simple: Fly from island to island, explore and solve riddles in dungeons. The first part is just WOOOH. Within minutes, you are in birdy-mode, using thermal winds, practising a smooth landing anywhere on the explorable world.
It is amazing how simple and relaxing the flying mode is.
The dungeons are pretty standard (though well designed) and for some reason, you cannot fly anymore when you enter a dungeon. But they fit in the world as a nice change.

What I am missing is more length in the story which is really deep. The ending (no spoiler) is abrupt and I was hoping there would be more.
If I had developed such a good fly-like-a-bird gameplay, I would have used this for a longer game as you do not get bored easily It just makes fun!
So maybe there will be a second part?

Es fehlt einfach was danach kommt.

AER Memories of Old is a little game with little depth. The story, the characters, the environment and the temples are not very fleshed out. The music is cheesy and not diverse and the graphics and world design are unremarkable. Meh comes to mind when thinking about this game. There is nothing offensive about this game at all. The music is okay. The gameplay is okay. The world and it's characters are just okay.
Overall, AER is a short 3hr+ game with little detail and is utterly unremarkable. 5/10.

It's a chill and beautiful game to play. The flying is a bit tricky to get use to so read the community instructions about it first. It's shorter than other indie games I've played but still relaxing and interesting. I want to know if it' s based on some folklore - the story feels spiritual and I want to know its origin if there is one. It's fun to explore and each island is different. I love that there's a map to follow. Also, the soundtrack is pretty lovely.

Beautiful game! The music and the flying mechanics just puts your mind at ease and makes you feel free and peaceful. The narrative was interesting. The only gripe I have with the game is
the ending. I understand that the devs probably wanted to keep it open ended and that's great but they could have ended it a little naturally, it just felt very abrupt. But that's just my opinion.
Overall, the game was quite fun.

It's beautiful, but: the bird form is extremely difficult to control; the controls aren't precise enough for platforming where required; the map, where available, is completely unlabelled; and there are no visual indicators of where you are supposed to go or what you are supposed to do at any given point. I really, really wanted to love this game, but I had to stop after a couple of hours, as it was just too frustrating to continue.

Overall interesting game. The main character you play as has the ability to turn into a bird and you fly from island to island finding puzzles, and learning the history of the land. I finished the whole thing in about three hours however I did not unlock all the achievements 12/20. Would recommend it to anyone that enjoyed Rime or Journey they all have a similar feel to them.

Exploring the world flying through it feels amazing. The fly mechanic works really well with the world design. I frequently landed on every small island to see if there's anything to explore. The story is so-so (spoiler about ending)
and the ending was very weak in my opinion. I wouldn't play it for the story, definitely not.
Exploring the caves and ruins was quite fun, but the 'puzzles' lacked depth and challenge. Finishing the story will take you about 2 hours. Add another hour if you want to explore everything. The music is relaxing, but gets a bit tedious after two hours.

Overall a nice, relaxing game that is perfect to pick up during a sale for a couple of bucks. I personally wouldn't recommend the game at it's current regular price (15 euros), though.

It's a very relaxing game. It's not too long, and the puzzles aren't too hard. I would've liked to see puzzles that incorporated flying, or maybe another mechanic besides standing on a thing and pressing E. That being said, it only took me about 4hrs to 100% it, so I really can't complain too much. I'm a big fan of the flying mechanic, and decided to play the game with a controller because of it. All in all, I'd recommend picking it up on sale.

This game wasn't a game for me. I was going to leave a positive review regardless because I know people that like this type of game would love this but... I had to hard restart the game within the first ten minutes because I was falling through the map and couldn't progress. Like when running out of the cave... There was nothing I could do. The game is a little old to have that kind of bug in my opinion.

I didn't like the game, yet I didn't *dislike* it either. It was a soothing experience. The music was very calming, and the gameplay was decent. However, I felt like the story was lacking in a lot of ways, and the plot was slightly incoherent. There's a lot of lure, and I wish it would've been written in a way that was a little more comprehensible. Also, I got lost several times due to a lack of direction. The overworld can be very confusing at times. Overall, it wasn't a bad game for being only $1. Would I play it again, though? No way.

A very beautiful game, it has nice visuals and pleasing sound effects, giving it a calm and soothing atmosphere.

Playing it was simply relaxing.
The flying mechanic is really good. The world itself has enough diversity to make exploring enjoyable and not too boring.
The puzzles weren't too bad, maybe a bit slow to solve, but I was disappointed to see that the ability to fly isn't used at all to solve them. The puzzles take place in interiors such as caves and temples, and while inside your ability to fly is removed until you've exited the area.

Overall for a 5h game it was still an enjoyable experience but more than that and it would have been quite boring.
It's a nice game but in my opinion isn't worth 15€, I'd recommend to buy it on sale instead.

Good short experience, but I find it a bit short for $15. I personally recommend purchasing this game while it's on sale, because it is certainly worth playing.

Pros:

  • atmosphere
  • visuals
  • soundtrack

Cons:

  • gameplay

It is a marvel regarding the more superficial qualities and you can clearly see on what the developers put their emphasis, which worked out great for me and a lot of other people apparently. They have done a phenomenal job in creating this beautiful yet torn world, where even though it may look empty on first sight, a lot of things are to be found from memories that tell you it's story to little easter eggs. Combined with the great soundtrack & beautiful scenery it really gave you on one hand this feeling of freedom and beauty when gliding as a bird over the world up high in the clouds while on the other hand always reminding you of it's tragedy or rather sad history.

The only lacking aspect in my opinion was the actual gameplay which is a mixture of plattforming and puzzle solving, which isn't that bad in general but all of it takes place underground or in dark ruins, which robs you of your ability to fly instead of integrating it creatively...which is rather sad, cause it worked really well as mentioned above. Nonetheless still a great & beautiful game which I can wholeheartedly recommend during it's sales, especially 'cause you can get it for next to nothing.

This game has no death or fighting. Just simple walking activation puzzles. Pretty fun for younger kids, but good enough for anyone to like. Some of the reading may be harder for kids, but the game is solid and fun. Took roughly 4 hours to beat going at a steady pace with my kid playing most of it.

The music, atmosphere, and graphics are all great but I can't recommend this game because I found the gameplay to be dull. The flying is fun and breathtaking but it's only a means of transportation and not the core aspect of the gameplay. The ruins were what killed me, they take away your ability to fly so you are forced to walk around and complete the puzzles. Which the puzzles aren't really puzzles. Maybe if the ruins were really short then it wouldn't have been much of a problem or even like a companion or something so that they could comment on the culture or location.

If this game had more focus on the flying and exploration then I think I would have enjoyed this game more. But as it stands this game for me at least is boring to play.

I really enjoyed AER, as it is a relaxing and soothing journey through a beautiful world with a lovely sound track. You are on a quest to find temple keys and reassemble amulet fragments to restore balance to the world. Along the way, you chat with spirit animals, interact with a handful of residents, and read a bit about the lore of the land. There are no voice overs and conversations are clicked through and read at your own pace.

The game world is a series of floating islands and you fly between them. Flight mechanics are fairly easy and, with a controller, I was soaring in no time. Luckily, there is no penalty for crash landings or for flying off the edge of the environment. AER also has a number of mechanical puzzles which are fairly straightforward and there are some light platforming segments. It is not precision platforming but I did find myself missing jumps and having to 'try again' quite frequently.

I was a bit puzzled by the save system. Although there is a save option (to a single slot), the game does not 'continue' from that specific point. If you quit and return later, you are likely to find yourself at the beginning of an area with some retracing of steps required. If you do not save, you are likely to find yourself at an entirely different point on the map. My solution was to save after key activities and not quit until I had completed tasks in the current area. At one point, I just left the game running because I did not want to risk repeating a tricky platform sequence.

While some achievements are story related, there are a few that are earned by visiting specific places on the map. Those wishing to shortcut their path may want to review one of the excellent guides on Steam. As you explore new areas, a map is created within the game. It is extremely helpful when moving between island chains and determining your current location. It can be accessed in flight and this, coupled with a compass, provide helpful navigation tools.

All in all, I recommend AER. It was on a super sale but the game was definitely worth more than I paid for it. AER provides a colorful respite from real life and was a nice change from games that have characters chasing me with bad intentions!

AER is an existentialistic and aesthetically pleasing gem that probably has one of the best flying experiences out there.
On the downside the controls can seem a bit wonky at start, but it won’t take long to get used to.
If you’re looking for a calming, freeform experience sprinkled with puzzles in an enchanting and at times melancholic world, AER might just be the game for you – as it was for me.

Seemingly very big open world, but in actually with only a couple of places to visit. It's really tiring to search through the islands only to find absolutely nothing there - maybe two bunnies and a ghost with some 'lore'. Speaking of which - there's way too much 'tell' and barely any 'show'. Instead of experiencing the backstory through visuals of the different places, with maybe a little bit of text to accompany it, it's literally just pages and pages of backstory I really couldn't get into, because of the amount of it. I feel like the lamp ghosts by themselves would work way better as a storytelling medium than all of the dialogues from each character. Made me roll my eyes at how forced some of the stories were. Also the ending felt extremely underwhelming.
Gameplay wise it was pretty alright - flying feels pretty good overall and it's fun to zoom around, but I'd really appreciate if the character could sprint in their human form. It's really frustrating to clip through a surface by accident, fall to the bottom of the temple and have to slowly make your way back again and again. Save feature for the temples would be great too - lost my progress twice because I couldn't find my way around the place and ended up leaving, thinking I just wasn't supposed to be there yet; only to come back later and have to go through all of the slow cutscenes again.
It's a really short game with lots of potential, I really wish it wasn't so buggy and tried to show some of its story more rather than just telling it / or maybe keep it more ambiguous. If you don't mind the slow gameplay and scrolls of text for backstory then I'd think you enjoy it though. If you're thinking of buying it because of the exploration aspect of it, then I'd pass - it's really not that engaging.

Very simple and short, but very fun as well. AER is a puzzle platformer game that allows your to transform into a bird and travel across the world.

The flight feels amazing, the music is great, and the art style is gorgeous. In my 2.8 hours of play time I completed it 100%. If you can grab this game in a bundle or when its on sale then seize the opportunity and have a very fun afternoon.

This game's art style is beautiful and the soundtrack is beautiful.
The flying mechanic feels great, if a bit hard to control sometimes, especially when the bird tries to avoid hitting the ground on its own when I just attempted to land.

The one thing that annoyed the hell out of me was the camera. It sometimes zooms on its own, is hard to control and once it even flipped over and I couldn't get it back the right way without reloading the save. I played with keyboard and mouse, didn't try controller.
Speaking of, it's impossible to remap controls. This is a big no-oh.

The map could really have used some text on it, the NPC will tell you you should go to a region, but all you have on your map are pictures of some floating rocks and hopefully a better memory than me.
I'd probably consider it a bit short for full price, I spent 7 hours on it with a lot of aimless flying around and looking for achievements. Just doing the story would be way, way less time, as there is only 3 temples. The puzzles aren't hard and there is no combat - both of which I appreciated. I bought it at 90% off and you can't really go wrong for that price.

Playing on Linux, it was necessary to add
-screen-fullscreen 0
as launch option or it would black screen on main menu.

There is a big contradiction when writing about AER: Memories of Old; it's much better than I thought it would be, and it suffers as a result. Going into it, I expected a fun flying game with some good exploration and some standard storytelling. What I didn't expect was some truly engaging world building, great tonal shifts and exciting escalation of stakes. This, more than anything, is also what made AER break my heart, because in the end I don’t think they quite managed to pull it all off.

In terms of artstyle, AER is a beautiful game. This is probably what you’ll notice when you first play the game, because simply flying among the sky islands of the game is an enjoyable experience. However, priorities change when you realise that you can discover memories of the past throughout the islands, images of a cataclysmic event long ago. The islands become special, not only because of their beauty, but because they were once part of a larger whole, a connection that you discover more and more of when progressing through the game. And the scale! Fractions of impossibly large statues, former grand cities that lie scattered, a great tree that towers over its local area - it manages to communicate the severity of what was lost when the world broke asunder. And throughout it all, the memories of people portrayed through simple but very human scenes; two friends looking in wonder at a waterfall, someone protecting a child from an attacking soldier, a group expressing relief at finding shelter. It makes the world feel, if not alive, then at least like it once was alive.

And that’s not even mentioning the events taking place. Generally, progress is made through visiting temples and other special sites, which offer some (mostly) simple puzzles that you move through to get more knowledge about the world and what is happening to it. It’s all surprisingly detailed, with gods and spirits and an evocative creation myth that makes some actual sense. I found myself wanting to know more and more as I went through, and together with the environments in the actual temples, I was sold. They range from creepy and ominous to beautiful and mysterious to tragic and solemn, and they all became places that I ended up caring about. Seeing a grand, beautiful temple that I had just visited being destroyed and buried under black rock was genuinely distressing to me, which again surprised me. I even started to hunt achievements because I simply wanted more of what the game was offering, and it didn’t disappoint.

So, why did it fail? Well, it requires some explanation. While the world is very interesting, it’s also empty. There are no settlements or people to interact with, only memories, and the handful that do exist are extremely flat. There is a big emphasis in the narrative to heal the world, but there is very little left to heal. It feels meaningless. So it is with limited enthusiasm that I approached the end, and the ending disappointed even further. The game tries to resolve the story on a personal level, focusing on the main character; the problem is, the main character is a template with no character to speak of. The world itself, the one that you spend hours exploring and getting to know the history and legends of, the one you have an actual emotional investment in? No resolution at all. You never get to see the world healed. It’s like they forgot what the game was about. Why underdevelop the characters if you’re going to tie the story to them in the end? Why wouldn’t you just show some concept art or something, to give you at least some semblance of what you were striving towards? It left me questioning why I even played the game at all.

It’s easy to point at the ending, maybe even shrug and state that “Well, it wasn’t a good ending, but the rest of it was decent”. And it would have been easier for me to do that if the game was worse. But when you have so many good things in the game, then I have to conclude that the problem is much bigger than just the ending, it’s the entire direction of the game. If a more personal ending was the plan all along, then why not develop the characters more? Hell, even the memories had more character than the actual living people, so the talent is there! It makes no sense to me.

This recommendation will be quite tepid. I know that the game is good enough to recommend (maybe not for the starting price, however), but emotionally I can’t help being soured by it. I think that I would be unfair to judge it on a bad ending alone, however, because the overall experience is good; just temper your expectations a bit if you pick it up.

The game is disappointing. There is nothing to drive the story forwards: there are no stakes at play, the characters are shallow and not relatable, the world is mostly empty, and the ending is underwhelming. The gameplay is not much to write home about either: there's a cool flying mechanic, but the (jumping) puzzles are trivial and there is no failure state. The game's only redeeming feature is its wonderful aesthetic, but there are better games with this kind of vibe.

While not polished or immersive, this game is a nice way to spend 1-2 evenings scratching your exploratory itch. It is expansive without being onerous to travel or inspect, since you can go very fast and key features are sparse. The flight takes some getting used to, but once you do it's quite fun (landing's the pain point, actually).

It may not be novel or have a ton in it - I just did 100% in 4.2 hours - but it's definitely worth the sale price of a movie rental. An evening well spent, with some pretty views and simple exploratory fun.

It's an okay concept demo for a decent game that I hope they get around to making someday.

Needs a lot of polish regarding controls (at least, any ability to remap them), collision, making any attempt to integrate the core mechanic into the dungeons . . . you know, just every part of the gameplay.

Don't mind the playtime, I re-bought this after getting it as a freebie on another platform, and only partly so I could review it.

This is a walking sim in some respects, and that's not meant as a pejorative. I've gather there's a story - it's told in a subtle enough way, environmentally and from nicely constructed texts - I can't say it's bothered me unduly, and to be honest I haven't yet finished it despite clearly being just a few hours long. But bear with me- in a certain way, this is one of the best games I've ever played, and mostly I just don't care enough about the story to want the experience to end.

This is one of the most fluid and empowering flying experiences I've seen. The low-poly world adds charm and the effects are pretty evocative. The world is exciting to be in without troubling you with realism. I've spent more hours soaring around here than I care to think about - and the totally threat-free environment and magnificent musical accompaniment make this a perfect game to share with even the youngest players, which is exactly what I've spent months doing. Little discoveries here and there suggest this was made with care and love despite its budget. I'm sorry to see the developers didn't make it to their next game.

A relaxing open-world puzzle/exploration game with a disastrous ending

AER is an open-world puzzle/exploration platformer, of sorts, which places players in the boots of Auk, a shape-shifting girl on a pilgrimage to the Land of the Gods. During the game you explore a series of floating islands, solve puzzles and uncover ruins left by an ancient civilization. You’re aided in this task by a magical lantern and the ability to transform into a bird at will. The story doesn’t get any more complex than that, however the backstory of why the world went to hell and the various beings that inhabit it alongside humans is fairly well fleshed out, provided you do your exploration and don’t rush through the game.

Visually, the game looks fantastic. It isn’t a graphical achievement in technicalities since the models are low-poly, there are barely any textures or particle effects and so on. It’s aesthetic direction rather than graphical fidelity that make it a good looking game.

When in the overworld, you’ll spend most of your time in bird form, flying from island to island, in search of three temples. This is a pleasant experience, the game has one of the best animal flight systems that you can find on the square. But gameplay, notably, lacks combat entirely.
Devs give you the freedom of flying around the map and find your bearings in your own time. That’s not to say there isn’t some guidance, you can talk to the handful of NPCs in 'The Settlement' to get hints on where to go, but I felt this at my first try not enough...
On the other hand, you can, as well, rush through the obligatory parts of the game in a breezy 3 hours to reach the ending

... and what about the ending? I wouldn't say so much about this because nobody really enjoys spoilers rather than I felt disappointed with it.
I don't usually care for open endings, i don't hate them either. But this one left me feeling abandoned rather than with a feeling of wonder and curiosity.
I wouldn't say the game ends, it just abruptly stops, I'm super disappointed by the ending...

All in all, AER Memories of Old is a decent game you should play even if there are some aspects than could be improved and polished a bit further.
You will enjoy spending time examining the lore and the story of AER's world, just to make sure you'd found every outstanding spot.

A small indie gem that doesn't let its budget get in the way of its beautiful vision.

It's a short, relaxing and introspective exploration game where you'll take control of a priestess on a pilgrimage to the land of the gods. Interactions are limited, but the views are breathtaking in their simplicity, both indoors and outdoors, and you'll get one of the most satisfying 3rd person flying controls/experience you'll ever have the pleasure to try.

It's one of those rare occasions where the final product is greater than the sum of its parts. The limited budget/scope is clear in many places, like music and worldbuilding, or even simply the structure of the narration that suffers a bit due to its flow, but you'll be easily immersed for a few hours in this desolate and yet beautiful world just exploring it and taking in the sights.

Absolutely worth your time and money. Give it a spin, you won't regret it.

The flying is really nice and the music/atmoshpere is really relaxing.

Yet I feel like something is missing. There are many questions left unanswered and sometimes that isn't that much of a problem but here it feels a bit unfinished. As if they had more plans yet didn't put it in the game for whatever reason. For the +- 3 hours you can finish this game I wouldn't buy it at full price but definitely pick it up if it's in a sale. I can go back to find some of the final achievements which might add a bit more time but I don't know if I will.

AER Memories of Old is an Adventure game developed by Forgotten Key.

Gameplay / Story

The old gods have been forgotten, only ruins and illegible writings on stone tablets testify to the events that destroyed the imposing cities of the ancestors. The world as the inhabitants of Aer - Memories of Old know them only consists of individual islands that float high up between the clouds. This mystical environment is now threatened again with falling into darkness. At least that's what the young protagonist Auk sees in an ominous vision when she lights a candle while visiting an altar on her pilgrimage.

She then receives a rare gift: Karah's light, an ancient lantern that enables her to see memories of the old world. Confused but brave, Auk decides to continue her pilgrimage to the three temples of the broken world in order to learn from the memories of her ancestors and to save her homeland from destruction. Fortunately, Auk is a shape shifter and can transform herself into a human-sized bird creature at any time and flutter back and forth between the islands. Flying is the absolute highlight of Aer and creates an incredibly strong feeling of freedom.

Pro

+ varied climatic zones and areas
+ great shadow and light effects
+ dynamic background music
+ intuitive flight controls
+ Achievements and trading cards

Contra

- hardly replayable
- inanimate, almost empty world

Conclusion

AER Memories of Old offers you a spiritual short-haul flight that invites you to dream.

Information / Review Deutsch

AER Memories of Old ist ein Abenteuer-Spiel, welches von Forgotten Key entwickelt wurde.

Gameplay / Geschichte

Pro

+ abwechslungsreiche Klimazonen und Gebiete
+ tolle Schatten- und Licht-Effekte
+ dynamische Musikuntermalung
+ intuitive Flugsteuerung
+ Errungenschaften und Trading Cards

Kontra

- kaum Wiederspielwert
- unbelebte, fast leere Welt

Fazit

AER Memories of Old bietet dir einen spirituellen Kurzstreckenflug, der zum träumen einlädt.

Aer is an enjoyable exploration game that builds its atmosphere through use of lighting, color, ambient sounds and a gentle sound track. Visually it is very well designed if you don't mind a stylized lower poly 3D presentation. For people who appreciate games with a strong sense of emptiness and calm this should provide an enjoyable experience.

Whilst this game is beautiful, it can be quite confusing. I'd recommend players 8+ to buy this, mostly because of mature scenarios, such as when you can see ghosts/spirits and whatnot. On the confusing note, I had to watch multiple game plays, and look up articles to explain what to do. I say that there is 2 cons on buying this amazing game: Confusing scenarios and storyline. While the storyline was beautifully written, we should have more explanation on what to do.
Like I stated before, it is a beautiful game. Simply beautiful. That's what it is. The animation, graphics and design are beautiful and simple and absolutely amazing. I spent my first hour playing, just flying around and doing tricks in the air.
You should, completely and totally, buy this game. Thank you for reading. ♥

An incredibly FREEING game. I spent WAY more time exploring each nook and cranny than I did actually progressing or experiencing the story. Again, it's a very freeing feeling, flying around, gliding, diving, spinning, zooming, etc. 10/10 would play all over again.

The game has a simple art style. However, the visuals the game manages to pull off with it are truly amazing. Its an exploration and puzzle game with a decent story for you to discover. The parts that give out the story are rather obvious, and you are unlikely to miss them. The transformation mechanic as well is quite fun to play around with. Another thing that stands out in this game is the soundtrack. Especially when flying, its so good to the point that I am unsure whether it was the soundtrack during flying I enjoyed more or the actual mechanic. Though I would not go so far as ton call this game a “must play” it is far up there. It is a small fun little game that you can pick up and quickly complete.

The game is charming for sure, but I find the controls lacking and puzzles a bit boring. It's fascinating, but I haven't really enjoyed the hour I've put into it.

The Linux build seems to be broken. I had to play under Proton.

The joy of exploration these floating islands is what kept me playing this game. It is unfortunately pretty short, but the experience you get from playing it, is intense. If you get it in discount for a few buck, you will get good 3 hours of gameplay of flying and solving simple puzzles.

It's a simply designed, but beautiful, game both in audio and visuals. It's not particularly challenging with some minor puzzle solving; it really speaks more to a curious, exploration-loving audience. Much of the surreal lore is entirely up to you to find. The only issues I've had in the game is that sometimes collision bugs out, but it's never been too much of a problem. When the music kicks in as you first take flight, that feeling alone is worth it.

***Special Pre-Review Note: If you experience motion sickness, don't get this game. You will get very sick playing. The dizziness is not fun. Migraines are to be had. It's not worth it. Back, back I say!

AER Memories of Old is a simple, chillax exploration game where you play as a bird shape-shifter and talk to a bunch of spirits while getting caves lit. Took me under 3 hours to beat using a controller. Difficulty is trivial.

There isn't that much here. Three short puzzle caves with very base puzzles (Find all the glowy bits and angrily shake a lantern at them, jam on a button to make symbols look good, etc), a few lesser caves without puzzles. Lots of flying in between; minimal direction in the sky. Honestly didn't know what I was doing for the earlier part of the game until I found the town people. And it took other reviewers to find that hitting both L and R triggers slowed the bird form down so I could stop slamming face first into islands.

The main world-building is left to wordy tablets strewn about that say a lot and leave you with little more than the realization that all exciting stuff happened long before you got there.

I can see the heart that went into making this game. Flying around is pretty fun, as was finding different statues or oddities on random islands. There's an atmosphere to the caves. But it all comes across as a shell of what the game Could be and everything feels unpolished.

Following up on my very first paragraph: Motion Sickness is the worst problem I had. It was bad, especially in the caves. I had to take Long breaks, snog down a bag of chips to keep my mind distracted enough from spinning, and choke on a ginger pill or two to stand any chance of getting through AER intact. This alone would have made me give the game a thumbs down, especially after the shaky cam in one of the caves. And the game and ending leave a lot to be desired. However, and thankfully, AER is short, charming in a way, and it can be beaten, so it gets the thumbs up for that. If you get it, get it on sale.

The core mechanic is flying, which is fun, but it's only used as a way to get between areas, which is boring. The story progression happens through platforming, for which the controls are much rougher than when flying, and puzzles, which didn't feel particularly rewarding.

It's a pity, because the art style is really something. The flying just begs for exploration, but there is little worth exploring. There are the pieces of a great game here.

The part of the game where you fly around as a bird is very pretty and peaceful, but ultimately the game feels shallow and unsatisfying, both in mechanics and story. It feels like a neat concept for a game, that could be made into a complete game, but this isn't it.

Pros

Not really challenging puzzles, lackluster ending

It is a good looking game, and that is the only positive thing I can say about it. Both the platforming and puzzles are meh, achievements for landing on random islands are meh (a few times I didn't even notice why there was an achievement for the island). The controls are a little weird, the game sometimes bugs out and move you to the main island of the area when you try to fly out of it... The camera jumping back and forth when you fly high is irritating as f**k.

What a beautiful and relaxing little game this is. Frankly it's not very long and also not really much of a challenge but I personally don't see it as a downside. It reminded me a lot of the classic indie games Journey and ABZU but instead of the quite narrow deep blue sea of ABZU and the sandy deserts and snowy mountains featured in Journey, this has an open world, or more like the open sky, that you can fly around freely. It's just something magical in this game about flying around this beautifully designed world while listening to the fantastic soundtrack that gives every part of the world it's own flavour. From the banjo driven theme of the Village, the synthie tracks like the one that plays around Lifla's Grove, as well as the eerie ambient sounds in the dungeons later in the game.

It saddens me to know that the studio behind this had to close down because they couldn't find any investors for future projects because I wish there were more games in the same veil as ABZU, Journey and AER. It's frequently on sale so if you want a short but beautiful relaxing experience you have to give this a try. <3

Despite the appealing design, AER is minimalistic in the wrong areas and all those unabashed polygons aren't the only thing that's rough around the edges. It was initially difficult to rag on the game since it is collectively harmless and artistically innocent, but so many choices from start to end distracted from what was likely a short, undemanding jaunt.

A frequent and surprisingly overlooked annoyance was in how jump, interact, and rocket upwards were all mapped to the same button. While perhaps consistent with the game’s limited scope, platforming never evolves beyond the standard jump and accidentally taking off into the air. Soaring through the islands is the soul of the game, yet the sky is full of nothing more than conceptually barren islands. Traversing as a bird is charming enough to merit any sort of basic applications. However, after a few minutes of experimentation, flying breaks down to an obstacle-free method of beelining it to the next linear cave. In total, the most playtime is spent in the elaborately horizontal caves that contain unamusing button-and-lever puzzles. At times their lighting and structures are neatly presented, but there is no ignoring the disengagement that stems from the overpopulation of joystick-only stretches.

On the whole, the game might not be worth your time, but I would still give the game some due credit. It doesn't exactly amaze or innovate but it gives the sympathetic impression of a small-scale passion project. For better or worse, designers took time to cultivate a less-standard idea. AER provided a homely glint amidst all the other high-poly games currently barking for my attention. That distraction, however, could have been a much more pleasant romp and outside of that relief from a change of pace, AER struggles to stand on its own.

This game is mainly exploration, it's relaxing, enjoyable and quite beautiful to fly around and see this world. I think the flying is the best part of this game since it gets you a sense of freedom and enjoyment. The game itself isn't hard and the puzzles, well I wouldn't really call them puzzles since they are very easy to figure it out and most of them are solved just by exploring around. The world feels big but in reality is small because most of it seems empty. I know this is the point of the story but I feel like this world had so much potential and add stuff to better reward the players for exploring. I find a new island and I think I will find something interesting but it's just another standard island. I do feel like they could have add more to make it even more enjoyable the exploration. If you like exploration without many objectives and want something at a slow pace sure this game is for you. If you want something more substantial then I would skip it. Still I will recommend it because of the flight system.

Decent smooth adventure, lowkey, deep(ish) story behind it.

+ Textureless graphics worked well for the style of the game.
+ Fluid running (144fps on 144hz).
+ No glitches/crashes

- Audio was not 5.1 or higher, it only came out of 2 speakers (shame too given the atmosphere).
- Very short, even with just exploring for achievements.
- Definitely not worth full price when a good movie is just as long and cheaper to own.

This is a very relaxing game where the only goal is the journey itself. It's easy to get lost in its captivating and beautiful world.

The gameplay is pretty easy, just let yourself go, explore with ease and do some not-too-difficult puzzles. Graphically has a pleasant minimalistic and colorful style, and the music goes well with it.

The bad thing is its duration, about 3-4 hours.

If you want a game to relax and explore without rushing, it's a good option (and it's usually pretty cheap).

While only taking 4 hours or so to 100% (including tea breakes), the game is really really solid. I'd happily spend many more hours just swooping through the landscape and exploring, if there was anywhere else to explore.

The story is... okay, collecting bread crumbs as you wander works, and keeps you flying (which is really the greatest pleasure of the game).

The brief puzzle/platformer dungeons function well enough and are so simple you can burn through them in minutes, but really aren't the game's strength. Especially as you will spend most of your time in them missing the ability to fly.

Personally I'm not the biggest fan of the art style or the music, but they have their moments... most of those moments are when you are soaring high. :p

Over all I'd give the game a HIGH 4/5 But I do think the game is a tad too short lived for the price tag, so would advocate waiting for a sale.
Never the less, if the game got sequel, or a successor with a similar focus on flight and exploration I'd be right there at release.

AER, Memories of Old

Remember Beastmaster who could look trough the eyes of his hawk, TLOZ SkywardSword where you flyed on the back of a red bird?
Or FarCry Primal where you were a bird.
AER focus is about turning into a bird and flying around, with philosophical story ight vs dark.

    Informativ:

  • Quiet a decent flying expirience
Code There's no challenging object to fly through, nor anything fun to do... just relaxing flying around.
  • Low Poly Graphics
  • Code Like in Shelter, but with rather blunt and basic coloring, still with pretty cool looking temple guardians.
  • Fair Price
  • Code At Discound/b], but normal price of 15$ looks to me frankly a little bit overpriced for this simplicity.
  • [b]Flying is only used to travel around
  • Code to reach the next destination where you have to solve platforming puzzles. There are much of unnecassary islands floating around which have no purpose. Whole seems overly deaf.

Verdict:

Well as much as i liked the game, it was short, but at the same time the oversized map made the expirience much longer.
And a price of 15$ for something made with such simplicity is rather overpriced, although on sale its fairly cheap.
The Story also ends with a cliffhanger, sequel of a better game (maybe?) to expect?
I'm on the edge about this game, but i really likde the visual ideas.

I bought the game because I thought there would be fun flying gameplay. Nope. The bird sections are just a way for you to travel from island to island solving basic platforming puzzles where you can't fly for some reason.

I wish they would have added meaningful and interesting gameplay to flying rather than to make a generic Journey clone with less resources and ability

Overall I really enjoyed this game. Very casual and relaxing. Fun to just fly aroundf and explore. The game did a decent job of letting you know where to go next most of the time. I have two complaints..

1 - FIX THE FUCKING SAVE!!!!! Had I paid full price for the game I would have been furious but because I got it on sale I a bit more understanding. I had to redo 2 of the 3 temples because the game is either broken or does a shit job of telling you that you cannot save temple progress which means you have to beat the entire temple in one sitting. The game says saving but when you ope the game again everything is gone. Incredibly frustrating.

2 - Give me some indication that the game is over or let me explore after completing it. There were a few islands / territories I didn't get to explore at all because I beat the game. I assumed they would be the next island to go to as the rest all seem to go in order but out of nowhere the game is over and I didn't get to go back. Again, for $3 I'm not too upset but it's still very annoying.

It's an artistic statement or tech demo in need of a game. While the stylised art design, coupled with the minimalistic music and the flight mechanics provide a mellow experience, the game is unchallenging, the story is dime-a-dozen, pseudo-Spiritual in a vaguely Gnostic sense, the platforming and the puzzles are uninspired, and my overall experience was of utter vacuity and meaninglessness.

AER Memories of Old is a nice and short Exploration/ puzzle game.

It's surprisingly story rich. You, the protagonist, are sort of a 'chosen one', and as the player, you sort of discover what happened to the world before the game takes place. The upbeat soundtrack, bright colours and light atmosphere sometimes clash with the 'story' as it unfolds for the player, but then again, that sort of makes it more jarring and eerie, which I could appreciate. I like how it didn't go full-on dark.

It took me about five hours to explore everything in the game and go back around for missed achievements. Although just flying around in-game if you want to relax should be nice too.

The puzzles are never overly difficult and the temples are large enough to get a bit lost in, but logically you'll find the way again.

Personally, I couldn't get the hang of the flying until the very end, but then again, it's like that with every game where I have to fly, so this is probably on me and my incompetence.
I played with an Xbox 360 controller on Ubuntu 16.04 and had no issues.

Overall, I can recommend AER Memories of Old, if you'd like to play a relaxing exploration game that's beautiful, has a nice soundtrack and an interesting story on top of that.

tldr: Buy it on sale - it's good but very short.

This game is solid, with a strong art style an immersive gameplay. The story is average and the play time unbelievably short. I finished the game in just under 3 hours, and that was doing almost every side quest in the game. This is a puzzle solving game, but the puzzles won't knock your socks off. Most times the answers are in front of you. In the plus column this is the first game I've certainly seen that does flying well - it feels game-y at first but as you get used to it you don't think about it and just fly which becomes very relaxing. Probably the most enjoyable part of the game.

I don't remember what I paid for the game as I've had it for years, but it's currently on sale for $2.99 at the time of writing. This price feels like a bargain for what you get -- but probably wouldn't at over $5 given the short playtime and average plot.

AER: Memories of Old is a fairly straightforward, but very relaxing exploration/3D platform game, with some straightforward puzzle-solving. The protagonist has the ability to transform into a bird in the main overworld segments, which brings with it an excellent, satisfying sense of freedom in motion. This is also essential to the gameplay, with the world made up of groups of floating islands across a range of biomes - which bring the potential for some beautiful scenes, despite (or perhaps because of?) the fairly simple, stylised graphical style. With three primary underground 'temples' as the basis for the game's progression, these each have some enjoyable puzzle-solving, but overall the game is quite short, comfortably beatable within 3-4 hours - which is probably about right given it's general simplicity, to ensure that the game doesn't outstay its welcome.

I gotta be honest and say that I was disappointed by this game. The gameplay itself if fine, I personally loved the artstyle and world. You fly around as a bird and its nice and chill BUT the story is just not there at the end. It had so much potential, the story is very interesting at the beginning and throughout but the ending shoots itself in the foot by just ending. There just wasn't enough there to make it feel like it mattered or that playing this game was worth it. It literally just needed a longer cutscene at the end. That's it.
