Remember that one special episode of a TV show that you can't forget, even though it might be a bit different than the rest of the show, it stands out and you can't forget it.
Like on Sopranos, when Paulie and Christopher got stranded in the cold woods?
Adios is like a stand-out episode of your favorite show. It might not be the usual, but you'll remember it for years to come.
what an Actual F7ск is this game. it has brought tears to my eyes, the writing is brilliant. the complexity of versatility of human emotions is intertwined with simplicity of morality and predictable denouement. in brief, it's a story of a man who has failed in basically every sphere of his life (except for his job, if i may). for me, it was not difficult to sympathize with him in the beginning of the story. though when it's close to the end, it suddenly becomes vice versa. maybe 'cause of his relationship with his son, or of what he did to his wife. and yeah, no clue how i would act in his situation... the end of the story tho, well, death is never an escape, but for the man who's been killing for all his life it might look like one
Stop it, stop reading this review or any others, scroll back up the page and buy the game.
It's good, it's worth it, some things are more important than money.

Not an action game.
You have a shotgun, you don;t get to blast away with it whenever you want.
So, if you were hoping you could- this game isn't for you.
It's a story- one day in a pig farmer's life,
A pig farmer who feeds chopped up bodies to his pigs, as part of his work with a hitman and the people the hitman works for.
Some emotionally charged narrative bits, regarding the farmer, his family, and the choices he made over the years.
Some exploration, but also lots of invisible walls, where you can see a big map that you aren't allowed to explore fully (which was a bit frustrating to me- I like to explore every inch of every map in every game...).
Stylized graphics- don't expect photo-realism. The game is set in the 1990s, and it has that look to it.
Some good music in the son's old room, but it'll be subjective. If you're hoping for 90s pop- you're looking in the wrong place. It's not that.
Scene select after you've completed the game, so you can go back and pick up missed achievements (and there are quite a few missable achievements).
If you enjoy narrative driven interactive experiences, you may enjoy it.
If you are looking for something where you can Blam Blam Stabby Stabby Blam Blam- you probably won't.
It's different than anything i have played before, and different than I expected.
That said- I enjoyed it.
YMMV.

It's basically the game equivalent of a short story, and there's not a whole lot of interaction or influencing the plot. Instead, it's about putting yourself in the protagonist's shoes and thereby starting to think about all the story's themes.
For me this game is about peace. Making peace with past mistakes, doing your best to correct them and also making peace with the consequences that you cannot fix. It's kind of sad and short, but that's exactly why you should take an hour or two to play through it.

Adios is probably my favorite game of 2021. I don’t deal with bullshit like “best” and “worst,” and I’m not terribly interested in giving you an IGN wannabe look at this game. All of this is just my opinion and what I enjoyed this year.
Adios is the type of game and story that transcends its story and environment. The game is literally about a man who decides to stop letting the mob dump bodies at his pig farm, but if you’ve played it you’ll know it’s also about so much more. This game is about family and relationships. It’s about what it means to do the right thing, even if you won’t receive acknowledgment for it and if doing the right thing may actually be bad for your well-being.
This is a story that could only work as a game. Through a series of vignettes the game weaves the story of a man living his last day and just reconcile that fact with the man who will probably kill him - the friend who will probably kill him.
If any of that sounds intriguing pick it up. I loved the time I spent with it and I can’t wait until some of the details fade a little and I can experience it again. It’s a fantastic journey, and it respects its players as well as their time.

Don't have to lie, thankfully.
Genuinely interesting and thoughtful game with a lot of good ideas. Pretty short so if you're the kind of person that worries about that sort of thing maybe grab on sale but totally worth full price either way
Wish I could adjust the bar behind the subtitles to make it darker (mighta missed it) and Invert look with a controller in-game. I think you can do it in steam settings but it's a chill vibe so you can get by without it just fine, just a small comfort thing

I'm leaning towards not recommended because I found the controls consistently confusing, which led to the experience falling apart for me in one of the final scenes.

Characters and dialoge feel very detailed and believable.
I love the art style and the location.
Gives off the impression of letting you have a say in things, when the game clearly states where it's heading and how.
A big AAA game would absolutely give you the option, but for all the wrong reasons, and that's why it's good that Adios sticks to its guns or rather the absence of them and delivers an experience I've never had before.
Well worth your time, if you ask me!
P.S.: Looking forward to whatever Doc Burford and Mischief cook up next. I'm sure it won't be white goop.

Even still I was so pleasantly caught off guard and surprised with how moving it was. Yes I cried at The Dog, yes I was so happy to play horseshoes (objectively the best yard game, feel free to @ me).
And I will be thinking about the horse off and on for likely the rest of my life.
Excellent game, wonderful little story. Couldn't recommend it enough.

Its not long, but the story it is well written, well voice acted, and the art style is fantastic. By the end of the experience I was a a crying mess of emotions. There isn't really too much to say about the game, if you looked up anything about it you know what its about and what youre expecting is what youre gonna get.
I wholeheartedly recommend it.

If you've watched the trailer, read any reviews, heard any buzz at all about this game, you know what's going to happen and what to expect. You don't need me to tell you if you're going to enjoy it.
What I do want to tell you, and why I feel like I should leave a review even though I don't have that many positive things to say, is that the creative minds behind this project definitely have the ambition, the drive, the passion, and the ability to make something truly great. Adios, for me, is a tech demo of more important things to come. But we live in a capitalist hellhole where good things don't get made unless a rich producer-type dude gets swindled into funding a project, feeling entitled to put his greasy fingerprints all over an artist's creative vision until it's muddied and disgusting and nobody wants to look at it anymore.
But maybe, just maybe, if us commoners put in our measly dollars and leave reviews, then Doc and his team get to make their magnum opus without having to bend the knee.
And that, more than any reason, is why you should buy and play Adios.
Also, I like goats.

This game has a strong focus on story in which you are free to roam about a small American farm.
There are horses to feed, goats to milk, and mini games to play.
If you enjoyed games like Firewatch and Edith Finch - consider it highly recommended.
The story of Adios captured me from the very first scene. While the setting and activities you can partake in are relaxing and peaceful, the inevitable trajectory of the story adds a sense of tension from the very beginning. It's clear that there was a lot of care put into that atmosphere which elevates it above many games of similar length.
The voice acting is one of the highlights. It is top tier and feels authentic to the setting.
The game's dialog serves it well. I particular appreciated how the game allows us to know what the character is thinking - even when they say nothing at all - it adds more weight to some of the themes, such as regret. Yep, this ain't no Barbie Horse Adventures.
Adios controls like the FPSs we know and love (HL2?) - and the shooting that it allows feels just right.
I didn't experience any of the bugs that might have been present in early releases.
It's a job well done for a small team that have made something bigger than the sum of its parts.

The premise of the game is listed on the store page – you play as an old farmer who was helping with disposing bodies for the mob for years, wants out. And you play through what is likely to be his last day alive, hanging out the person who is still somewhat of a friend, but will probably become his killer because of his decision, doing chores, trying to say goodbyes. There are some sections that are just dialogue, with choices that don’t matter much and some sections with simple interactions which are still mostly dialogue.
And it’s moody and nice and some parts of the script were really nice. Yet, even ignoring the terrible sound mix where the voices can be barely heard most of the time, I feel like there’s not really much for you to care about unless some of the elements resonate with you personally. Curiously, even the premise that I’ve mentioned, isn’t really spelled out inside the game as well, as if the store page description is meant to be taken as part of the experience. Is the game worth spending 90 minutes on, if you stumble upon it especially on sale? Sure. Is it fine if you skip it and never check it out? Yeah, you’ll probably not miss much.

The story presented at Face Value of two men, discussing their lives, how they have changed what happens going forward. The plot in the background, however, speaks to a deep understanding of a certain kind of loss that is hard to execute without being cheesy in the best case or insulting in the worst. Adios is neither, a well written story, great voice acting and for me personally a believable performance from every member of the cast. The concept of how this story was delivered via the gameplay gives the scenario a tangible amount of realism; if the writer or writers lived on a farm and this was how they lived, I would believe it.
I was engage, I felt the emotions they were trying to get me to feel, and I enjoyed my time with Adios completely. Even if this review sounded negative at all, it isn't. Indi games like this are the ones you hear about in the news in terms of their quality; and Adios deserve to be praised in the most genuine way I can express. Take 2 hours, maybe less, and learn what it means to be a rich pig farmer.

When you play this game, just take your time with it. Soak it in. Put on some nice headphones and let the game go. It'll do it's own thing. You? You just do yours. :)
I will say, it's a very short game. You can probably beat it in one to an hour and a half. Depends on your pacing. I sat there soaked it in, felt the waves and at the end I did all the achievements for the game. Its a really well written game. If you love games that mostly just do story telling for you, then this game will be for you! It has voice acting and all. :D

In an hour you get to learn so much about this man, his family and his relationship with the mob, every dialogue brings new information in a way that feels organic and just right, the word choice communicates so much about the characters it's amazing.
The art style may clash a bit with the tone of the game.

Narration and voice acting are top notch. Animations could be better and help conveying the emotions of the characters. I didn't like some of the mini games like cooking and fishing, I just wanted to see the rest of the story, but I guess those mini games have a point of building the atmosphere.
Overall, I think I won't ever forget this game.

I've always loved movies that can carry an engrossing story exclusively through dialogue, but I've never seen a video game pull this feat off successfully until Adios.
Highest recommendation if you don't mind it being on the shorter end of the spectrum. It's a game that wastes no time, it says what it wants to say, and it does it with a tasteful, tactile oomph.

Adios
A really interesting concept that almost delivers, but ultimately is let down by the lack of vocabulary choices, a clunky interface, and a questionable turn of events.
Story ????
You're a pig farmer in Kansas. For the last fifteen years you have helped feed chopped up body parts to your pigs for the Mob.
Today, you have decided to quit. You are no longer comfortable with letting the mob use your pigs as a way of disposing of victims.
Together you discuss the reasons for your decision and the consequences, whilst tending to the farm on a cold crisp morning.
Have you resigned to the fact that this might be your last day on Earth or can you be talked around?
Zitat:
I was really interested to see where Adios would take me. The thought of handing in your notice to the Mob intrigued me, and the consequent conversations that pursued. I thought I would have more choice in the way the conversations panned out but really, you’re just a passenger watching events play out to their inevitable end.
https://youtu.be/wn3bNCVWtVs
Overall Impressions????
I thought I would have more input in to how the story unfolds.
There are dialogue branches, but they are extremely minimal, plus they all end up with the same conclusion. I have played through the game a few times and there is no way to change or alter the story line. It will always end the same and your journey there will be almost identical too.
Therefore, Adios is a cinematic experience discussing the reasons why you have come to the conclusion to quit working for the Mob.
The dialogues are voice acted quite well and some of the conversations are poignant and emotional. The pig farmer and the mobster have been working together for fifteen years so there is some familiarity in their exchanges.
Most of the interactive scenes are quite basic but the control interface is quite clunky and rudimentary. I had particular issues controlling items, during the cooking scenes. You can’t put items down, only swap them, and when you swap them, they get flung across the room and bounce into awkward places. Sometimes these are irretrievable. It can be quite frustrating.
Visuals are basic but attractive in places. Character’s faces aren’t drawn particularly well. They cannot display emotion, and the weight of emotion purely rests in how the voices are spoken.
I am sure some of the achievements are bugged, but it is difficult to tell as there are no guides, and I can only go by the description on the achievement. The good news is that any scene can be played after you complete the game which helps.
I experienced a few bugs during my gameplay including a massive glitch with the graphics where all environments were messed up. I eventually fixed this by altering the field of view and it never came back. I experienced other graphical issues like the goat jumping across the room leaving the mobster milking nothing; there were numerous dialogue errors where previous conversations would kick in; and once the mobster got left outside the building whilst I carried on in and was talking to him.
The story is difficult to discuss without revealing spoilers. It is certainly thought provoking. I’ve changed my mind a few times about whether the story should have taken a different path but the outcome is a valid one. Personally, I wanted to see more emotion and more drama in their exchanges. It didn’t feel tense and there wasn’t enough pressure on changing the farmer’s decision.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2424838646
Adios is a decent attempt at an original topic. I was disappointed that I couldn’t influence events but I enjoyed the hour I spent watching the two characters talk about their past and listen to the farmer’s stories and reason for quitting. If you like walking simulators, this is an interesting take on the genre, and there’s a lot more to do than most. The dialogues are well acted and there are some heart-felt moments covering a variety of topics. I think it's definitely overpriced considering one play through only takes an hour however. |
Gameplay????️
Conversations
The conversations are initiated by walking or running to a destination indicated by a distance counter on the screen. Certain scenes can be played in any order, although after you choose a scene and play through it, another scene may automatically follow.
The scenes vary in length and vary in input. Some scenes you might not even discover unless you interact with certain objects.
Occasionally, you will be given up to four choices to make to continue the dialogue. The choices only alter the conversation ever so slightly though and the main points will always be the same.
I noticed in some dialogues that the choices were greyed out and could not be selected. I thought that it was because I needed to say something different in previous conversations and these would then highlight. I have tried every single dialogue choice in the game and these options are still greyed out. I’m not sure whether this is a bug or I am doing something out of order perhaps?
Exploration
There is a journal which acts as a check list on all the chores you need to do, so this will help you ascertain what objects you might need to interactive with.
There are a lot of red herrings where objects can be examined by rotating them but they are hardly ever relevant and therefore pointless. Some do relate to achievements though and some can be interacted with. For example, taps, cookers and microwave ovens can be turned on.
There are a couple of free roam opportunities where you can explore the farm and the farm house. You can run quite fast so exploring is easy but the farm is often cordoned off so there’s not too much scope for meaningful exploration. Searching the house was quite fun though.
Interactive Scenes
There are about five interactive scenes you can enjoy whilst you talk to the mobster. Tending to the animals, throwing horseshoes, fixing your car, fishing and skeet shooting are all activities you will encounter during the day. They’re all quite basic and easy to manage apart from the cooking scene which might prove frustrating to some.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2423727859
Graphics ????
The environments are quite pleasant in places and the animals look cute and move quite realistically. Immersion is let down slightly by the mobster’s facial expressions, as there aren’t any.
Sound ????
Voice acting is quite professional and emotion is adequately portrayed in conversations. There is no menu music, or any kind of music playing whilst you play. Maybe that would have injected some more emotion into the story?
Conclusion????
Zitat:
Adios is a decent walking simulator with some interesting and original ideas.
I enjoyed the conversations between characters, and the interactive scenes, but I’m not wholly convinced that events would play out so mildly and without incident. It just felt a bit tepid to me.
I would still recommend the game however. See what you think.
