This game and its phenomenal ost live rent free in my head, so much so, that i even wrote a school essay about it.
Long story short just go play it yourself.
(Oh and while you´re at it, dont forget about its older brother journey, which is just as great.)

It's a visually stunning game that also has a fantastic soundtrack that immerses you right into the world it takes place in. If you played Journey you already got a taste of the brilliant work of Austin Wintory, the composer for both games. The gameplay is simple and yet effective in keeping you interested, small interactive spots and collectibles also make it fun to explore. The game has a variety of marine animals to offer which are quite fascinating to watch, the only thing I would've liked is a small description to some of them when you meditate, e.g. the vaquita, the smallest living cetacean which is on the brink of extinction.
The story is also worthwhile and enthralling, definitely something to think about after you finished the game.
All in all a beautiful experience.

ABZU

Do you remember video games as a kid, wondering how a whole new fantastical world could fit in a digital space? And how video games seemed like the new frontier of humanity to explore? And have you lost that sense of revere for video games? Well abzu can bring that mesmerizing immersion back. And it tells a story only video games can. A story that is short and is a refreshing change of story telling where subtly SHOWING the story is more important than blatantly TELLING the story through excessive exposition. This is the first game that made me re-imagine what video games can be as an experience and made me hopeful again for the medium. Abzu is a beautifully gorgeous looking game with a relaxing atmosphere, stellar soundtrack, and simple and non-frustrating puzzles and gameplay. Its the perfect game to cozy up too before bed. The game is short but ends while its still good instead of overstaying its welcome. It took me 2 hours to finish the game but I plan on revisiting this world often just to relax.
I got it on sale and feel like I ripped off the devs for underpaying.

However, aside from those two points ABZU doesn't really have much to offer. The gameplay is practically non-existent to the point where they introduce a mechanic to hold down shift to ride a fish at the start of the game and then never use it again.
The story was also very bare-bones, and can be summarised in one sentence. Nothing abstract to delve into here, and it doesn't feel like the story leaves much to your interpretation either.
The puzzles are so overly simplified that it's rather frustrating to have to swim to 2 levers to open a door. I feel like it could have done without these in all honesty and just let the player marvel at the visuals and soundtrack.
I really wanna recommend ABZU, but I just can't, especially not for the price tag. Not to mention the runtime of the game for me was 75 minutes on a relaxed playthrough. Nothing compelled me to find the collectables or to explore every nook and cranny as their rarely was anything interesting to find when dwelling of the intended path.

For the most part, this game is a walking (swimming) simulator that lets you admire high quality fish meshes in colorful surroundings. When I first started this I expected nothing else, and that's exactly the amount of expectation you should have. If that prospect does not thrill you, stay away from this one.
Other than that, the game can be completed in about 7 hours if you have a compulsive need to check every corner of the map. Other reviews show you that it's completely possible to take a huge dump on the scenery by running through it like a madman and completing it in 4 hours or less. I would recommend getting this game on a discount to the total of 8 bucks or less, as otherwise it does not seem to justify itself with the amount of enjoyment you get out of it.

???? Overview
???? Merits | ???? Flaws |
---|---|
✔️ Delightful artistic visuals ✔️ Tranquil, dynamic soundtrack ✔️ Relieves excess stress ✔️ Peaceful experience ✔️ Fascinating collection of oceanic wildlife ✔️ Better with keyboard and mouse |

???? Introduction
Do you seek a mind-blowing story driven by a heavy emphasis on characters? Are you waiting for an avant-garde level of gameplay with a brisk progression system and tons of unlockables? Do you look forward to enticing challenges that will showcase your peerless set of skills by pushing your abilities to the limit? Do you expect a gigantic world full of hours and hours of in-depth exploration that will make you lose your way out of your room? If the answer to all of the previous questions is yes, then no, this game is not for you.
???? Single-player
???? Diving Into the Beauty
Its surface is blue as the skies, but deep down is a hidden beauty that will surely dazzle your eyes. As a humanoid diver, you get to experience a peaceful breeze of an adventure to the deepest depths of the ocean to witness nature's peak glamour. You are free to roam as you wish and to dive as you like as long as you are within the boundaries of the OCEAN's invisible walls. Beneath the seas, blue may seem like the dominant color that veneers the space underneath, but it isn't the case here in ABZÛ. Embrace your visual receptors for a vivid journey full of alluring colors.
???? A Fallen Civilization
Abzu or Apsu is a word of two Sumerian words: ab meaning 'water' or 'ocean' and zu meaning 'deep' which has another meaning as 'knowledge' according to its pictogram. The Deep Ocean of Knowledge may be the closest interpretation of the word 'Apsu' considering the premise of ABZÛ the game. From the meaning of its name to the submerged temples of a fallen empire is a story crafted from the player's exposition of the elements and details provided by the game. I think it's a warning rather than a story that hints at a catastrophe that might occur provided that we don't withdraw the war between us and nature.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2658554647
???? Scuba Diving
Alright, let's put this first: there is no combat, stealth, puzzles, or death. You go from point A to point B by unlocking doors that will eventually lead you to a lifeless area of the ocean, where you activate something mystical to bring life back to it. And things go on like this until you reach another dead area. It makes the game repetitive, but not to the point of frustration, as each part of the ocean is visually distinctive with its content, color scheme, and the pacing is as fluid as water. Along the journey, you can explore, collect collectibles, and meditate.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2657154926
???? Deep Thoughts
There are shark-like statues scattered all around the unique locations within the depths of the ocean. Finding these statues allows you to tap into meditation mode, in which you get a dynamic view of the surrounding marine life and environment. Manual changing of perspective is an option while meditating as it automatically shifts from one species to the other, viewing the area from different angles. The life forms presented by the game are existent with no fictional intervention, so you're getting a genuine documentary here. I really can't find an answer to why the Hell is there no capture mode? It's a sin having such a beautiful game with no one included.
????️ Technical
???? Fancy Ocean
Deserving of the eye-candy seal of approval is the well-presented art style. Combine it with superb music and fluid pacing; you're in for a staggering show. Throughout the introduction of different areas is a smooth transition between visuals and music which adds more quality to the pacing aspect. What makes it work perfectly is the solid connection between them. It comes out from a live orchestra, giving it a cinematic, relaxing tone that perfectly matches the player's mood during gameplay; the exquisite music here is nothing less than ideal for the intended outcome of the journey: a tranquil experience.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2658204706
???? Some Deep Diving Defects
If you hate motion blur, then you'll hate this too: there is no option to toggle it off in-game. Frankly, It isn't that bad but can make your captures blurry when motion is involved in a screenshot. I had some problems with the vsync option in-game, as it randomly caps a solid 60 FPS to a constant 30 FPS. The borderless mode is also missing from the settings menu, which can be a better replacement for the weird vsync of the game. There are other missing options like adjusting brightness, game volume, music volume, etc. The overall performance is smooth, and speaking of controls, key bindings configuration is not an option; however, I think playing it with mouse and keyboard is better than playing via a controller.
???????? Fixes
???? Disable the F*cking Motion Blur
1. Go to %LOCALAPPDATA%AbzuGameSavedConfigWindowsNoEditor
2. Open Engine.ini
3. Add the following lines to the end of the file:
[SystemSettings]
r.MotionBlurQuality=0
???? Enable Borderless Fullscreen
1. Go to %LOCALAPPDATA%AbzuGameSavedConfigWindowsNoEditor
2. Open GameUserSettings.ini
3. Add or modify the following line under [/Script/AbzuGame.AbzuGameUserSettings]:
FullscreenMode=1
⚖️ Verdict
That's what ABZÛ is all about, and what it aims to be: a 2-hour stunning therapy of complete relaxation. The only nerves that will be stressed are the ones around your jaw for being open for a long time thanks to magnificent sceneries and fantastic music. It doesn't mean it's perfect, though. It lacks engaging mechanics, and not having a capture mode is a crime in its own rights.

There is almost 0 story, most of the achievements are collectibles or progress-based, the controls are fckn awful and require fine tuning with Y and X invert until you get used to them and there's no challenge whatsoever.
That said, this game is still art and worth playing for the final chapter alone.

Instead of playing on the sand like Journey you’re now playing in the ocean. This has some advantages as far as atmosphere is concerned since you can freely move in all directions now, plus there’s wildlife surrounding you.
The gameplay consist of more things to do, fortunately, but it also has one major downside: you can’t die. And this sometimes impacts the gameplay in a specific (I wouldn’t necessarily say negative) way. It removes the urgency of specific actions like swimming through minefields. And since there are no ‘upgrades’ like Journey’s scarf you can just basically risk it all with nothing to lose.
Other interactions would be opening doors, meditations or grabbing and swimming along with some of the creatures you’ll see. There’s plenty to do, not all of it incredibly deep or meaningful, but enough to keep you entertained during its three hour journey.
I could go into more detail for all of it, but since it’s such a short game I don’t want to spoil things. And the environments and wildlife is basically what it’s all about anyway.
Having already discussed the vibe of the game I’ll just briefly discuss the graphics here. Characters have a low poly feel, but have enough detail to them to make them feel more realistic and the environments and the lighting are insanely pretty.
Austin Wintory, also of Journey, returns for a soundtrack that fits this same kind of atmosphere. Peaceful, serene, soothing - any other words reflecting that same kind of feeling - you name and you could call it this soundtrack.
During my playthrough I experienced no issues whatsoever.
Abzu is a gorgeous game that doesn’t reach the greatness of Journey as far as the lore/story is concerned. The gameplay, while more diverse, is also largely the same.
And that’s absolutely fine. It doesn’t need to have the same impact. It can stand on its own just fine.
If you have a couple of hours to spare and you like beautiful scenery and relaxing gameplay then is one game not to be missed.

* Beautiful Visuals
* Mesmerizing Soundtracks
* Inspired by games like Journey and Flower (if you like those, you'll like this)
Now the cons...
* Horrible controls (this is the biggest flaw of this game tbh)
* Though it is inspired from and very similar to games like Journey and flower, it falls a bit short of the same quality.
* This is personal but the game seemed a bit stretched out to me, gameplay was getting kinda repetitive, I enjoyed the
ending but I wish it came a bit sooner.
Bottom Line---
If you like games like Flower and Journey, then you'll definitely like this, but don't expect the same level of quality and also be prepared to tackle some absolutely horrible controls. Other than the controls, it's overall a good experience.
Rating ---
7.5 out of 10

It is extremely short, and $20 is a high price tag for a game that'll give you 1.5 to 3 hours of gameplay (though I do think it has some replay value in trying to find all the collectibles, or simply experiencing it again a few months or years down the line), so I'd definitely recommend picking it up when it's on sale, but honestly, if you buy it on sale, I think the short length of the game is actually a plus. It's a game you can complete in one sitting, getting completely immersed in the gorgeous visuals, stunning soundtrack and simple joy of riding whales and zipping through jet streams surrounded by countless fish. Though each level map is actually fairly small, they're all crafted in such a way where you still feel as if you're making real progress through an enormous ocean.
Also it contains giant squids, prehistoric fish and Mesopotamian mythology references, what more do you want?

I usually prefer games that give me a challenge, or a longer playtime, but this is one of the few exceptions. ABZU wouldn't take long to complete, not at all, but I think that's part of the charm. It feels like a quick movie you went to watch at the cinema, with tight focus on what it wanted to say, and what it needed to say. There were even points where you would forget that you're playing a game since it does such a fantastic job at immersing the player. The animations, the landscape, everything that is laid out here is done to it's fullest, and it is ALWAYS breathtaking to look at. The game also has a lot to say, without ever speaking a word. The narrative is done in a straightforward and simple way, but it is effective at delivering the message. For the price it is set at, I absolutely recommend this game to either casual players, or even the hardcore ones, since I can see anyone enjoying this game. 8/10

The plot in ABZU is amazing, with subtle details rewarding you for having a close eye. Even though the premise is quite simple, it's an emotional journey which many reviewers have said given them peace of mind. The graphics are nothing short of gorgeous, it's a simple but breathtaking style I really enjoy. Atmosphere is great; even though you can't die, you can't help but hold your breath as you go deeper and deeper. There is more to this game than you'll first expect. The game is quite short, but I don't have qualms with that because it doesn't drag on unnecessarily.
All in all, this is a great game if you need some stress relievers. It might be a tad expensive for a short game, so you might want to wait for a sale.

Information / Review English
ABZU is an adventure game developed by Giant Squid.
Gameplay / Story
In Abzu we wake up as a mute diver with no prior knowledge or orientation floating on a nameless ocean. Our path is the goal, we have to figure out the framework and the history ourselves based on what we have experienced. Abzu has no text overlays, no accompanying narrator and no NPCs who could tell us interesting things about the world. The only living beings around us are fish, but they are known to be not particularly communicative.
But now and then, it doesn't want to tell us a classic story and it deliberately remains vague. The focus is on immediate experience and amazement. The environment tells us everything and nothing. So we find old ruins with drawings that are reminiscent of Egyptian temples on our dives. So we penetrate deeper and deeper into this completely unknown world under the water surface and find traces of our origins.
Pro
+ beautifully designed underwater world
+ great lighting and color moods
+ fantastic background music
+ interesting surroundings invite you to explore
+ mystical ruins with mysterious hints
+ credible animal and plant world
+ Achievements and trading cards
Contra
- short playing time
- Discoveries are not rewarded
- no danger, therefore very easy and monotonous
- Mouse and keyboard control takes some getting used to
Conclusion
ABZU offers you a wonderful underwater world with impressive technology and biodiversity. But one looks in vain for a playful challenge.
Information / Review Deutsch

The controls take some getting used to, but you can definitely play this with a mouse and keyboard. (Especially if you've been doing so all your life, and a controller would take more time to get used to than this game is long.) I would recommend inverting the swimming up-down axis, though, so that W is up and S is down. You can do so from the pause menu.
My only regret is that for years I didn't know this was more than just a swimming simulator, that it's also SciFi. I would've bought it at full price years ago, instead of waiting for a sale and letting it sit in my library for years.
10/10 would swim with Sharky again. And definitely will, this is going to one of those games I replay at least once a year.

I do recommend trying ABZÛ. It is really short and maybe a bit too expensive for its runtime. Then again in that short while I got to swim with whale sharks, breach the sea on the back of a blue whale, rescue a great white and explore enormous underwater ruins. Short yes, but with so many memorable moments. One last remark, a piece of advice rather. If you do decide to try it, it's probably best to play it slowly and in short sessions. Both to better take the experience in but also to avoid getting bored by the slow pace of its rudimentary gameplay loop.

I would say the best way to enjoy this game is to plug in your preferred controller, and turn on some good music, or a podcast and just vibe dude.

Calm and peaceful atmosphere.
The game doesn't require you to rush anywhere (except couple of fast places) which makes it a perfect game to just chill and enjoy the ocean life surrounding you; to go with the flow.

ABZÛ
A beautiful meditative journey undersea
Are you looking to escape the madness of gaming such as smashing your keyboard/controller fighting hideous demonic monsters in the likes of Dark Souls or Sekiro? Do you want a virtual sanctuary to allow you to temporarily forget the atrocities of 2020 as well as escape from modern life? Then look no further. ABZÛ will provide this relief for a good 3 - 5 hours.
ABZÛ pre-gameplay made me think of Subnautica but it is drastically different from Subnautica. The only similarity is the serene sea. I've got this game for free on Epic Store but purchased it on sale on Steam as I'd rather play it on this platform.
So what is ABZÛ about? It's hard to really explain it accurately as there is no voice dialogue and real narrative. The best way I'd describe it is it's a surreal yet tranquil meditative journey through the undersea as you swim and traverse among the diverse marine life that co-exists. It's a sort of odyssey journey within the sea.
The mechanics of the game are simple. A controller is strongly recommended as it would be awkward to play with a keyboard and mouse. I used my PlayStation 4 Pro controller for the game and it works perfectly. You are able to explore sections of differing underwater life while having small tasks to do like sit on meditation spots which allow you to observe the vast array of underwater marine life around you (each section of the game with different species). You are able to also find collectables in the form of meditation statues, hidden fish pools, and sea shells.
The whole experience is a short-lived one with around 3-5 hours with the only replayability being to get any missed achievements after finishing the game for the first time.
As much as I like ABZÛ, I would still recommend you wait for it to go on sale due to the price to content ratio.
If you want something relaxing and calming, play this. It will likely turn you into a better human being.
Positives:
- Graphics and world is amazingly designed and realised
- A very relaxing game which may likely help you develop positive meditation habits in real life
- Fluid and responsive controls
- Easy to learn and play
- A short game to play. This wont eat away at your precious time
- Decently priced for the amount of content you get. However, still wait for a sale to pick it up
- Vast array of marine life to see while exploring and meditating (feature in the game)
- Easy to 100% the achievements
Neither Positive/Negative:
- Needs to be played with a controller as it is one of those games which is awkward to play with a keyboard and mouse
Negatives:
- Not much replayability. Once you're done with all 12 achievements, it's one of those games you replay once every few years to relive
PERSONAL RATING - 9/10

A while ago now whilst browsing a bundle that had just come out I noticed the charity “Child’s Play”, as I had noticed many times before, on the list of beneficiaries of the proceeds gained by the bundle. It gave you a short snippet of what the charity does, but for some reason this time I was compelled to go and have a look at what it actually meant to “improve the lives of children in hospitals and healthcare facilities around the world”.
I ended up on their website, and as someone who is interested in psychology and therapy in general a particular part of their homepage intrigued me. A “Therapeutic Game Guide”, with a download link, aimed to present “Game recommendations for staff and parents based on factors such as pain or mood.”
“What the hell are you waffling about?” I hear you holler. Well, I may be talking pure unrelated bullsh*t right now but this is loosely going somewhere.
The guide presents symptoms, and then game recommendations for said symptoms.
Abzu is listed under both “Anxiety / Hyperactivity” which works by “Relieving discomfort and stress and promoting a peaceful mood” and “Cognitive Impairment” by “Offering low-impact entertainment for medicated or cognitively inhibited patients.”
Before stumbling onto this I never really considered that video games could be genuinely therapeutic, it’s something which is quite obvious when you think about it, and games like this are often tagged “relaxing” and that kind of thing but I found that to think that there are lists of recommended games for real therapy for children was actually quite interesting.
Abzu is a beautiful, calming, and soul-cleansing game which introduced me to a genre of games which prove that video games can be beneficial in a certain way. We play games for good stories, to simulate, to learn, for sport, to compete, to strategize. There are many outlets gaming is popular for, and good for, but right now especially, one of these outlets that I think is particularly beneficial is just to escape.
Escapism can help us recharge.
This sounds a bit sad, but for instance: if you are living in a city during lockdown, in a sh*tty area, where there is nowhere particularly nice to go for your government issued 30 minute walk, you may grow tired of being trapped inside a concrete jungle, in a little apartment, with the looming fears at the back of your head as to when things will go back to normal. I know people in the likes of London who were in this exact situation.
I strongly believe that nature is healing. If you’re so wrapped up in life, completely tangled with our societal construct, our higher life-form way of existing, completely detached from nature, how could you remain in that state of mind whilst coming face to face with some of nature’s most effortlessly flawless, grand, and incredibly unique things?
Ask yourself, would you be eye-balling the aurora borealis whilst worrying about your tax return? I doubt it. Would you be standing atop Mount Everest thinking about some petty work drama? No.
Sure, those are pretty extreme examples, I imagine there are a lot of us which may never get to actually see examples of that extent, but beauty can be found in nature anywhere. A sunset on a hill, the smell of freshly cut grass on a country path, the fractured sun beams cast down within a forest. All of these things let your mind rest and appreciate for a moment. Nature reminds us there are bigger and better things out there, and this genre of game helps simulate this mind-set. We all struggle in our own ways, but I do feel like games like this will help, even if just for the short while it takes to complete.
Abzu explores the beauty of the ocean, and of the creatures that live in it.
Everything in this game is soothing. The graphics are bright, but easy on the eyes, which can create very mesmerizing scenes. The environments vary in colour palette which keeps you engrossed in the game, and the use of colour in some parts help to portray very different moods.
This game has a very powerful way of using colour/light to portray the human interference with nature as something which taints the beauty you strive off of for most of the game.
It’s fun to explore and interact with the wildlife, in a way that I personally didn’t really expect to be a part of this game. The music is very well done, and definitely contributes a lot to creating an atmosphere which further extends the subduing nature of the game.
When it comes to the exploration aspect of this game, there aren’t really any restraints to this game, the game is linear, but you are free to explore each environment at your own pace. There are a few puzzles, but nothing that I think you could consider a set-back in any way.
It is a very casual game, and although there is no big story here, what you could consider the story to be is maybe more so a general moral than a story. What is nice about this game is that it tries to educate you gently, and guide you into provoking thought for yourself around the relationship humans have with marine life, and the oceans ecosystem.
I personally really enjoyed this game, and loved the concept of a game set entirely underwater. New environments are always fun, and I think this will definitely be the kind of game that I will come back to. I can’t see any reason as to why I wouldn’t want to re-experience the good vibe this game was carefully shaped into having.
I will definitely be on the look-out for games similar to this genre as well. Exploration games with a focus on the visuals and set in nature are games I have a new appreciation for. Journey came out not long ago, so I am sure that is where I will be heading next in terms of this genre.

Excellent experience for those who enjoy more casual, emotional, and invigorating games, as a plus there is also some replayability if you don't happen to have an eagle eye and spot all the collectables first playthrough.

What I can tell you about, as I'm sure you've already noticed, is this game's majestic art style. From beginning to end the game has beautiful multi-coloured environments under many different colour pallets and lighting stages.
The gameplay is where this game may fall dead in the water (Bu-dum-dumpsh). While the diving, swimming, and riding mechanics are all exciting at first. They age, very quickly. Past them, there's really nothing else this game offers in that domain. It has a bit of explosive dodging, i suppose.
In conclusion this game is... Lackluster. Between its short length and lack of quality gameplay in that short time, I'd have to say it is hardly worth the price tag. It truly is more of an art piece being sold as a game, which is a practice I don't support.
Overall, I say, buy this game if you have $10, this game is on sale, and you're looking for a game you can unwind with for a couple hours in a beautiful but quick journey.

You swim around, you come across absolutely STUNNING areas with plenty of creatures and a lovely soundtrack, and there's a little bit of environmental storytelling later on. It doesn't go in too deep about it though, just a basic premise of ''hey, so, this was a thing, and your people were kind of involved in it y'know''.
Personally I expected more gameplay and fun out of this game. It's definitely more of an eye-candy kind of thing rather than sitting down and actually engage in a story. I found it to be gorgeous and relaxing to look at, but I wouldn't play it for a game-like experience nor replay it, hence the eye-candy thing. Wasn't my cup of tea in the end, unfortunately.
I can recommend buying this on sale only, if you're into walking simulators and the like or just looking for a nice, laid-back relaxing experience. The visuals are lovely to look at, so if you're an arts kind of person you'll definitely be able to appreciate them.

ABZU is an artistic video game that takes you through a beautiful seascape story. It shares many features in common with the desert style game called Journey. They both have similar storylines, game plays and graphics. The beautiful artistic style is the heart of this game, and in itself, makes the story. I was worried at first that the story would be understated and it would just be a graphical exercise or a simulator, but this was not the case. With good storyline development, unprecedented emotional connection between the characters and all communications done without voice lines, make this a lovely experience. I love how the music and surroundings change as you flow through the story. It has uplifting, colourful scenes in which you can swim with gold, yellow and red fish before it descends into sombre, dark blue scenes. This isn’t a long game, but it should not be played just to get to the finish. It should be enjoyed for the journey and exploration, rather than the completion. Overall, I think that this is a great game and that everyone should have a play of it.
