Spielerlebnis
????Gameplay

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2048986490

July 2017, release day: Peak player count is 18,000. Connection issues, clothing is undyeable, and some people are reaching the final area in a few hours. But the game is fun! The combat is new, exciting, and difficult to master. There are four different styles. There are light attacks, strong attacks, spin kicks, drunken fists, one-inch punches, everything from every martial arts movie I’ve ever watched is here. But I need to learn them first.
September 2017: Player counts are around 500. “Dead game” status. I stick with it, try to gather moves by blocking or dodging NPCs or other players. I explore the game’s varied, but small areas. These areas are connected to each other and sprinkled with NPCs, items, and mini bosses. There’s a major boss at the end of two or three areas. My combat deck isn’t great, but I do my best and I can beat the three bosses. I become an Absolver and get my cloak. My Combat Trial level needs to be 50 to refight the bosses and earn loot disks for gear and money. That requires PvP. I give it a shot.
October 2017: I’m getting my ass handed to me, but I win a little bit. The drunken style, Stagger, feels good and I like the dodge spin. There’s a Halloween update with some new masks. I do that and crawl my way to level 50. People are getting used to Stagger and punishing me in matches. I hit a wall and see the endless expanse of skill between me and my opponents, and how many hours it’ll take to get cooler clothes. I put the game down.
September 2018: There’s a new Downfall update, a mode where you delve into roguelike areas and defeat a bunch of guys and bosses. Finding people for it is hard so I try it solo. I’m not successful. There’s a new style! But the computer is beating the shit out of me. I see the skill gap. I’m missing moves that I’d like to collect. I put the game down again.
April 2022: I’m determined to get the rest of those moves and beat the hard bosses. Player count is around 60, but people are dutifully doing PvP and running around areas. Using the old combat deck, wins are rare occurrences. Grandmasters honed by thousands of battles beat me into submission. I clutch on to the single CT point I get with every loss like a homeless person searching a dumpster. Hardcore players destroy me like meat is back on the menu and I’m their next meal. As my opponent smashes his foot into my face, I notice how his moves flow together much better than mine.
After dragging my broken body back to Guidance Bridge, I join his school (Celadon, ID#41727). The move set is weird, but I have nothing to lose, so I relearn the art of combat. Instead of spamming the dodge, I slow it down, block, look for patterns. After many matches, I can throw the other guy off balance with a perfectly timed kick. I still lose a ton, but I win some too. I write down other people’s schools and search for unknown moves. I do runs through the Tower of Adal, parrying NPCs like I’m striking a rock one thousand times. I can buy a new outfit with the currency I’ve accumulated, so I don’t feel like a street fighter covered in rags. In PvP, I recognize people I’ve beaten before and who have beaten me. Combat is a dance. I still lose more than I win, but it doesn’t feel hopeless.
I feel confident enough to beat the bosses on their hardest level, and I do. I give Downfall another go by myself. The boss of the first area is double my size, but he doesn’t understand. I’m Bruce Lee. I’m Jackie Chan, Jet Li, and Donnie Yen. I am reborn. I take him to church and grind my Gleam level to unlock more clothes. I realize I’m having more fun now than I had at launch.
Verdict: I can’t say I’ll ever be good at this game. I’m sure my record in PvP is abysmal. But I enjoy the process, the customization, the art style, and the lore. If you’re prepared to get absolutely bodied for several hours, you too can make progress. If you have two or more dedicated friends who are willing to swap moves, even better. But don’t expect an expansive PvE experience with PvP on the side. This is at least 75% PvP with NPC fighters as a topping.
I’m looking forward to Sloclap’s next game.

The story is short and the fights can get repetitive after 20 hours of gameplay.
However I would love to see Sloclap develop another martial arts game with these button mechanics because they are truly unique and I haven't found anything better imo.

the combat really shines in its open-ended creativity. it almost feel as if you're intuitively building your own tekken character. the many design choices with these systems taking ideas from fighting games furthers my belief that it was designed primarily for pvp. virtually every ai enemy can be cheesed by spamming 2 fast jabs that string into each other until you're out of stamina... the only enemy that tried to actually parry me once in a while was the last boss, but i still got away with poking it to death very effortlessly. there is also basically zero variety in the enemies, as they all just punch you in generic ways, having different moves that they are not programmed to use properly in the slightest. this is, thankfully, not the case in pvp, where people know how to outrange your jabs and block/dodge out of strings at the right time, as well as making proper use of their evasive and defensive maneuvers in general.
it doesn't quite match the mechanical elegance, complexity, or precision of a proper fighting game—but in terms of open-ended strings and move interactions, it gets pretty close. there's moves that go over lows and under highs, as well as guard crushing moves and armor interruptors; all of which feel great to make proper use of. the two biggest letdowns about the general gamefeel is the absurdly long input buffer, as well as the very noticeable input lag. these two elements combined made parrying or reacting to any moves feel rather terrible in many cases. if you hit parry/dodge a few frames too late and get hit, it will actually buffer your input and do it right after you leave hitstun, causing you to sloppily mess up your timing and likely eat another hit with no way to rectify the situation. in my opinion, this is a very glaring design flaw that fighting games easily avoid by only implementing input buffer where it's needed and not as a universal rule. buffer is not always helpful, and in this specific case, it actually made the inputs feel less forgiving.
so, is it a fun pvp game? yes. the playerbase is small, but it's still active.
is it a fun pve game? unless you really like building decks and utilizing new martial arts moves, absolutely not. i'd rather play arcade mode in basically any fighting game, and i hate arcade mode

I was hyped for new areas, outfits, masks etc. but the playerbase just... left? For like, no real reason. It was mainly a PvP game with some PvE, but became pointless once all the players left.
Sifu, the sames devs next game, has done really well and I hope we one day get an Absolver 2 which does a lot more to make it the game Absolver 1 could have been if the players had stuck with it and supported the developers.
The playerbase killed this game. Not the developers.

PROS
- The game has decent combos even Swordmanship feels fluid (im not even kidding even i get surprised when i successfully input a fluid combo)
- The scenery is so beautiful, Decrepit with a hint of everything!
- The Multiplayer is fun! (at first i thought i might get beat up by some random person but everyone are all decent! i even helped out a couple of people in the starting boss since they kept dying)
- The customization here is so sleek every piece of armor looks so cool
- Tough but fair combat! (no cheap moves the combat revolves around your skill!)
- There is a SINGLEPLAYER MODE but i recommend playing this on MULTIPLAYER

Absolver is a fusion souls like fighting game with a focus on duels and creating your own fighting style. The game boasts a deep and interesting combat system that is capable of being both complex, and nuanced. However that system is almost entirely irrelevant in the face of the way the game is actually played. A potentially great idea that falls just short. Altogether the PVE experience can be completed in around 8 hours by someone with experience in the genre, and is somewhat enjoyable at different points throughout. Unfortunately the downfall of the main story (other than there being essentially no “Story”) being that the AI is laughably inhuman and difficulty is either non-existent or overwhelming. You either demolish your enemies in a brutal one sided beat down, or run into the brick wall of health and stamina that is the bosses. On the other end of the spectrum is the PVP experience and that experience is… undesirable. As while the combat system is quite robust. It is narrowed down to fast hitting hard to read attacks being spammed until one or both parties is out of stamina. To top that off much of the games post game progression is locked behind this PVP. Which with a nearly dead player base is now nearly impossible.
PROS-
-Beautiful art direction
-Haunting atmosphere
-Interesting and complex combat system
CONS-
-Short campaign experience
-Underutilized combat system
-Poor enemy AI
-Brick wall bosses (See poor enemy AI)
-Progress locked behind PVP
I would recommend this game at the price of $10 or less.

The real joy of the game comes from a combat system that is incredibly unique, fun, satisfying, and easy to pick up.
I also adore the multiplayer aspect of this game. Other players are passively phased into your game, meaning you can either just get a friendly wave, a helping hand, or challenge. Other players may also choose to revive you which allows friendly battles to not set a player back. Even 4 years after release there are still active players so you can still experience this.

[Review]
I would love to recommend this. I really would, the game play is very fun. With a group, even more so. You get to run around and punch and kick things. You're able to learn new moves and create your own combos and really set your character apart with them. However, the developers have abandoned the game, to the best of my knowledge, so I can't recommend the game with good conscience. Very sad, Kanye. :(

If you only want to play singleplayer, it's still decent, but not much content. 6-10 hours at most I would say, after that you are just repeating the same things over an over. Could still be fun for some people to try out different decks, but I feel like it's not challenging enough for that. The visual style is gorgeous, so maybe it's worth it for that too.
One place the game really fails for me is in showing the attack stats and animations, very hard to decide which attack to pick.

Fun and Unique
Pretty sure I got this game a good while back in a bundle, and while its a bit difficult (at least for me) it's still an immensely fun game to play and roam around in. It's even better when you come across other helpful players, I'm more of a co-op gal so I'm always looking for people to game with. Pvp itself is more or less dominated by veterans leaving new players at a major disadvantage but where there is that downside they is a upside, some players are willing to help and teach you. It's a mixed bag and you can get attacked by other players in general so be wary. At the base its unique and a good blast, the combat is quite in depth and you can eventually customize your attacks/moves to your liking. It really is a interesting combat system and it is what makes this game.
Pros:
- Calm atmosphere
- Fun solo and co-op
- Nice graphics and style
- Unique game in a sea of typical games
- Challenging and fun mechanics to master
- Deep combat system which is customizable
- Loot able and purchasable gear which can affect stats and how you fight
- 3 modes, Pvp Arena, Open world (solo, co-op and pvp) and Downfall (room to room clearing solo or co-op)
Cons:
- Microtransactions
- Not much of a story behind it all
- Work on the game seems to have stopped
- PvP is not optional, it can happen out of nowhere
- The price tag is expensive, especially for a abandoned game
- PvP arena is one sided with veterans stomping people easily

Yea it's pretty solid, fighting styles feel unique and string together excellent combos.
Fighting for cosmetics and essence to buy more equipment and powers to spice up
your specific style is great. Barely anyone plays it anymore which honestly sucks
for such a cool game but with a few friends its definitely fun. I played the story alone
for the most part and had a good time overcoming the bosses.
is it worth its price?
Only if it's 50% off or more, this was a gift but $8 for at the current time, 30 hours of fun,
I'd say it was worth it.

Cons
- Game lacks in depth tutorials
- Story is Short
- World is small
- There's only ~10 bosses
- A lot of content requires internet
- Bosses feel similar and simple even tho they have different styles
Overall very good game

NEW PLAYERS BEWARE
Please see here for major community and game issues(Steam heavily limits review length)
Overall Impressions
Absolver is the overall most satisfying fighting game I’ve played. The style and pacing is pretty much “Morpheus is fightin’ Neo”: The Game. It perfectly encapsulates the martial arts movie feel. Everything from how players attack to hit impacts flows well, looks incredibly stylish, and feels amazing to learn and master.
The Combat Deck system (which allows players to mix and match moves they’ve learned) allows for a ton of variety for how each player fights - offering a massive amount of variance for each encounter and giving tons of room for player expression. Styles further augment this, giving a core set of always-available defensive options which can synergize with one’s own moves while offering solid counters for some of an opponent’s moves. Much of a player’s time spent with Absolver may be in the Deck Editor, puzzling out which moves best fit their play style and offer the best counters for enemy decks.
The school system further augments deck building, allowing players to share their moves with others - offering opportunities to try a new deck without needing to build one themselves, and (as of one of the game’s later updates) moves in a school’s deck can be learned simply by using them. The seasons system allows players to take on the mantle of their given school and compete against others, with surprisingly generous rewards as players win and earn points to increase their school’s rank.
The single-player campaign (despite being depressingly short) has an interesting world style, some unique boss encounters, and is overall a decent tutorial to get players on their feet and ready to begin exploring Combat Trials. I’d love for the world to be expanded in some future update (or more likely a sequel).

Long Answer: To justify that, let me tell you how the game works. You an Absolver, which is kind of like being a medeival Jedi. You have force powers (the game calls it folding) that enhance your attacks and give you special abilities, and you get swords and gauntlets and martial arts stuff to kick the crap out of NPCs and other players with.
The game itself is fun, but takes about an hour to understand, and longer to master. The fighting mechanics are complex, and balance strategy, skill, and instinct. The progression system is good, and makes up for the game's bare-bones story, which would be engaging if not for the minimal world development. In fact, the story is the weakest part of the game, which is saying something. You have to pay attention to dialogue and the world around you to really understand the story, which I like; but the game also doesn't really tell you anything concrete, which makes it a little too subjective, for me at least. Customization is great, about nine slots just for your character's appearance, with small bonuses that help your health, attacks, etc. You can also customize weapons, special abilities, fighting styles, and choose what areas you want your character to rank up in. The game's strongest point is gameplay, and in this area it's really good. Like I said before, you can customize weapons, fighting styles, and even stances to change the way you attack and defend. Combat is difficult to master, and fights can take anywhere from 10 seconds to 2 minutes depending on your style and skill. A quick tip: lower the graphics resolution if you have an average pc or slow internet so the combat is smoother.
Parents: This game has no blood, guts, swearing, or any nasty stuff, when your character 'dies' he just dissolves into mist or something and then gets reincarnated. it's the same thing your kid would see if he watched Kung Fu Panda or The Karate Kid. I wouldn't let really young kids play it since they'll likely get frustrated, but it's fun for anyone 11+.
So is this game worth $29.99? Well yes, but your money would probably be better spent on a game like Assassins Creed or Halo 2 that have a little bit more content. The good news is that there are often sales on it; I got my copy for 7.99, and it was worth every penny.

It's a damn shame the game wasn't developed to its full potential. What a gem would it be!
There are just a few locations to explore with a bunch of bosses to beat. Not much to do, unfortunately.
And it looks like PVP aspect has been slowly dying out, too.
But all of the new players I met during my playthrough were very friendly and we helped each other a lot, felt nice :)
I also tried to beat a funky looking guy, he turned out to be a pro, then he whooped ma arse, but was also kind enough to revive me afterwards, that was also cool :)
A damn shame Absolver has ended up like this, let's hope there'll be a sequel or something!

Absolver is one of the, if not best disappointing games I have ever played. What I mean by that is this game does not have enough substance and content to be deemed as great or outstanding, but there's enough passion and entertainment in this game to give just as much happiness and fun as you'll have sadness and disappointment. Now, if Absolver was still being worked on with new content, areas to explore, an active player base and events, then I could easily recommend this game and look forward to the new things to come. Unfortunately, development for Absolver has been canceled since around August of 2019. The game comes as it is, and since it hasn’t seen any attention from its developers for 6 months now, it's safe to say it’ll stay this way for the remainder of its lifespan. On the bright side, servers are still currently up, which means you can still interact with players online, as well as play with your friends.
I want to start by talking about the style and world of Absolver, since it’s one of the first things that attracted me to this game. The world is a vast and beautiful land with a variety of forest and temple-like areas. It’s style is similar to Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild, but there's still so much uniqueness and originality in this game that it stands on its own. Every player must wear a mask, but there's so many different masks and outfits to choose from, that each player can customize themselves to look and fight the way they wish. It gives all who play it a sense of individuality, being able to tell their own story and do as they please. The amount of freedom you are given, despite the fact that the game isn't an open world game, but instead free roam, is simply incredible.
This game has an amazing combat system, which you, the player, are able to customize fully to your liking. On top of that, the A.I. are can be challenging to fight and are capable opponents for the most part, being the enemy A.I. use the same moves and combat the players do. In fact, countering enemy attacks will allow you to slowly learn those said attacks and add them to your inventory, so that you can build up your attacks and use them against the enemies. That factor alone keeps the PvP and PvE consistent, making both choices of gameplay equally as fun. Even by the time I stopped playing this game, the combat never got stale, nor did I feel burnt out over it.
Even though the A.I. are a joy to battle against, I do have to admit that the most fun I had playing this game was fighting with and against friends. The game allows 3 player co-op, so you and 2 other pals can go out and explore the world in front of you. Even though you’re banded in an alliance with your teammates, there is no way to turn friendly fire off, meaning you still have to watch where you’re attacking so as to not hit your buddies. I really appreciated this because it meant you couldn't just spam attacks on one enemy, you’d still have to strategize together and figure out collectively how to counter enemies.
Even though nowadays, it can be hard to find other players online walking around and doing activities, there's still a good amount of multiplayer based game modes to choose from. There's the Downfall expansion where you can tackle a dungeon on your own, or invite some friends to take down a big baddie and get some good points. Then there’s 1v1s, where you’ll get matched up with an opponent online, best out of 2. Lastly, and mostly, there's 3v3 tdm and point capture. This was and always will be the most fun I have ever had with this game. One time, I got together 5 friends who owned the game, and we all competed in a 3v3 point capture match. It was extremely intense yet insanely fun. Lots of laughs and battle screams were shared with each other that day, and it'll always be known to me as the greatest gaming experience with my friends for the year of 2019.
If you’ve been reading up to this point, then you’ll notice that for the most part, I’ve had nothing but praise to say for this game. I didn’t even get into detail about the school system, weapons, shop, bosses, and final areas that I enjoyed in this game. This is where I have to be realistic with my overall verdict with the game. As much as I love this game and everything it has to offer, I could still only milk what it gave me in under 40 hours until I stopped playing. There's just not enough content built around what this game does to sustain it. For all the fancy outfits, luscious areas, and challenging foes, there's only so much provided to the point where you’re just looking for more that isn't there. You can beat the entire game around 5-6 hours, and from that alone, you've seen almost every enemy and area there is to see. The multiplayer experience is a blast and still worth checking out. However the current state of the games player base is so dead, you’ll be lucky to encounter a 1v1 match. 3v3’s are almost nonexistent, and the only real way to experience them now is if you gathered 5 friends or people from the community and planned a match up with them, which isn’t always doable.
The last thing I saved to talk about this game, is the story. Usually, the story is the first part to review, but for this particular game and what it means to me, I had to leave the story for last. If nothing else, Absolver’s story is extremely lacking, and is the most disappointing part of this game. In the story, you, the player, are the chosen one, and must defeat some bosses. That’s really about it. There are a total of 2 big bosses and 1 final boss, who each have a bit of personality but overall hold nothing more than a challenging time. The end boss is super rewarding, and when you beat her, it seems like the story is finally taking off. She escapes, and you officially become an Absolver, now ready and prepared for new and daring adventures. Except you aren’t, because that's where the story ends. Right when it feels like the story had started, it already ended, and leaves you feeling nothing more than sheer disappointment.
It honestly saddens me that the community has put more love and effort into the game than the developers have themselves, spawning plenty of interesting lore and talented fan art. Although I have no hope for the developers returning to the game and adding onto it, there is one small hope I still have in the back of my mind. I wish for the developers to open up a workshop or open sandbox for the players to create and customize at their free will. If this was open, there wouldn’t be a need for the developers to do any more, as the community would be more than willing to expand the game with mods and campaigns. The Absolver discord, subreddit, and steam page shows more than enough proof that the community is extremely dedicated to the game, and I hope that the devs take note of that one day.
That's all I have to say about Absolver. I really do love this game and could go on for hours about what I love, but being it’s given me an equal amount of emptiness and disappointment, I believe I’ve already given this review too much effort and attention. However now I can feel satisfied and content with the experience I had, officially closing the book to Absolver, and moving on. Thank you so much for reading!

found some gear and painted it.
killed all filthy marked ones.
found even more gear.
killed the boss.
hit max level and started to build a fighting style.
kicked even more bots in downfall.
realized that you need win online fights to progress in some points.
also realized that the game is dead.
but I found a player in pvp.
... he kicked my ass with 1 combo.
again.
again.
and again.
if you like fighting games, you can get the game on a sale... the pve content is worth it. maybe 8-12hrs.
otherwise I don't recommend it at all because it's dead. you can queue for 2hrs and you'll not find a match... and when you do find one, it's this one player who's giving you the one punch combo and yea..
12/10, would kick some bots again

The problem is, there's barely any content, there's not really a story, if you could even call it one, and the biggest issue, is that there really isn't a playerbase, which is quite problematic for a game that is focused on an online PvP type of gameplay. As of writing, there are 30 players online. Yes, thirty.
The trailers make it seems like you'll work together to fight other players and explore the world together, facing off against AI foes and hostile players alike, but the few players I have seen have usually just brushed past me, and there isn't much of a world to go through to begin with. Occasionally, I'll spot a random player, jumping on an injured player who was distracted by AI, as the injured player dies a helpless death as they are barraged with attacks from both player and AI enemy. There are even a few spots where you'll fight multiple AI enemies on your own, as they barrage you with a hail of blows, creating fights that aren't exactly fair or satisfying without the aid of another player. In addition, the AI is alright in combat, but it's quite easy to find a spammy combo that just defeats the AI due to their lack of judgement.
I also have a personal dislike for the fact that you have to 'learn' moves. I mean sure, they wanted to give people a reason to keep playing and whatever, but at the same time, the combat becomes kind of stale when you've got to run around and block and dodge attacks and whatever in order to use another attack. When I beat the 'story' I had only ever utilized the same moves I had started with, with the addition of maybe one or two moves in the combat deck. By the time I was done, I really didn't have much of an interest to keep going. I didn't have any other moves to work into my deck because I didn't unlock them. The core gameplay loop was ultimately the same as it was in the beginning, and that felt disappointing. While it was satisfying to learn the combat at first, I didn't feel like I was learning much more past the initial two hours of starting, and by then, there wasn't any new stuff to explore so I just felt like I was done. I guess the best way to describe the situation would be something like playing Mortal Kombat 3, but Scorpion doesn't have the teleport or the spear until you play enough to unlock it.
Absolver is a game I would certainly like to see more of, but I can't justify the asking price, which is currently $29.99 when it isn't on sale.
