Über das Spiel
The game focuses on “Age of Sail” ships in a Fantasy setting, framed in an Art Style inspired by classic Naval Oil Paintings.
Life in the world of Abandon Ship can be brutal. Death is permanent. But the game doesn’t end if your vessel is destroyed. You are the Captain, and as long as the Captain is alive, there is always hope. By escaping to a Lifeboat, or even being stranded, alone in the water, there is still a chance to survive and fight your way back to the top.
Combat is tactical and savage. Each battle is hard-fought, always on the edge of defeat. Your only chance of overcoming the odds is to employ every advantage you can and utilise all the tools at your disposal.
Explore a fantasy world that reacts to your actions. Quests may drastically change the environment. Make decisions that create friends or enemies that may later come back to help or hinder you.

I was very surprised how long the campaign went (41 hours my playthrough, though admittedly I did bandy about quite a bit). It was very inspiring, and so much fun.

The game also has an interesting dynamic mix of gameplay between RTS during ship on ship/monster/? combat and modified P&C area movement for RPG style environment interactions and encounters.

There's mechanics that should result in variation and depth at strategic map level and in tactical ship battles, but it seems to not be fully developed or well thought out -- ultimately there's an optimal approach to both, and the game becomes very repetitive and monotonous.
You can still enjoy it for the story and experience if you're not looking for a game with much depth.

After beating the Kraken, the ship was pretty well upgraded. Generally the only reward for confrontations is gold (which is used for upgrading your ship). Since I no longer needed gold, when I wanted to explore other biomes, I would just avoid confrontations. The reason being, unlocking neighboring biomes require you to trigger 6-8 events to go to the next one; so late game, since you don't need anymore rewards from confrontations, you just start trying to skip confrontations.
Sometimes when you find a unique event in a biome, it looks interesting at first, but ends up leading to a few text screens, maybe some 'challenges' to jump through, with no reward at the end or meaningful impact for visiting it.
hours logged is high because left game running paused.

It's a grind. Never even got the Man o' War ship unlocked and I don't want to know how long it would take to even get it. The rewards for fighting other ships are so meager you spend more repairing your ship after battles then what you've won from them.
The boss battles are the same damn boss over and over and over and over and over and over again.
The lack of being able to save the game when you want to unless you have a Captain's log makes this repetitive grindfest even more annoying. Lose a crewmate that you've been leveling from the begining? Hope you saved otherwise you need to drop more money for a decent replacement and start grinding to level them again.
The story had promise and is the only reason that I even bothered to finish this because I wanted to see how it ended and it's left a sour taste in my mouth. You don't get to fight the Lovecraftian Eldritch being like I was hoping, you simply fight another ship and fade to cutscene. The End.
There was a LOT of potential here and I really hope that the Dev(s) can use this as a stepping stone to improve their craft and eventually make something that holds up after the first three to five hours of play.
In short. Grindy. Tedious. Repetitive. Boring. Disappointing.

Now i don't write reviews too often, but after reading some of the game's flaws i'd like to comment on those.
First off all: it's 100% a roguelike. There are alot of people commenting on the game being too easy, but it offers 5 difficulty levels and trust me; 5 is increadibly difficult. Every loss of a crewmember brings you on the brink of defeat as you'll need most resources for repairing your ship after a fight and sustain yourself through travelling. The game is meant to be lost and to start over. That being said, if you're not looking for a too difficult playthrough - level 3 is completely fine.
On a second note: people have been commenting that there is not alot of difference between each ship. This is definetely true. However every ship has different load out options making you able to go full frontal melee/entering or completely long ranged ballistic. You can switch between load outs in the journal option while traveling. This actually brings so much variation to the combat and promotes different playstiles against each different enemy.
Overall i'm very impressed by Abandon Ship and if you're a sucker for roguelikes and shipmanagement, go for it!

I stopped playing in early access because I thought the game was really good and wanted to wait until it was finished. Unfortunately it fell victim to unforgiving god of time and I just haven't bothered to get back into it.
It is a very unique CRPG about escaping from a kraken enthusiast group and becoming a pirate. Cool game is cool. 3 out of 5 stars.
1 star - Big heap of garbage with no redeemable value.
2 star - I found fun in it, but it is objectively flawed.
3 star - Solid experience. Not stellar in any regard, but a safe bet and easy recommendation if it is up your alley.
4 star - Real gem. Great game and you should check it out.
5 star - You haven't played this yet? What is wrong with you? This is so gooooood.

In short, it's fun for a bit but gets repetitive around 10 hours in.
It's an FTL clone but runs can last hours and hours and it doesn't feel like there's any interesting, meaningful progression.
The ships are all the same the load-outs and layouts don't really change or even force you to adapt.
The story is fine, enjoyable enough but not interesting enough to snooze through the combat for much longer.
Get it on sale IMO and play it with a podcast/audio-book/album and a drink (or three).

This is a great game overall and I do recommend it. The game is basically a ship sim game at its basic. You begin as an unwilling cult member who wakes up from their control and escapes with a few prisoners and a ship. As you run you are relentlessly pursued by the cult. A meter will appear in areas and you have a certain amount of time to clear the events to unlock the gates and proceed to the next area before they find you. If they do, they attack and you must defeat them to continue.
Each zone has different dangers and weather that affects your ship and crew in combat. You must carefully maneuver through the area to keep your ship afloat. Your crew will be put to the test in some areas and some you will dominate. Each area will also have a number of events you can interact with that will give you bonuses or hurt you depending on your choices on how to handle them. Be careful! Some things are better left undisturbed. If you leave an area, then come back, events will set anew and you can do more to attain more supplies to fund your revenge.
You have your choice to play as a helpful crew, helping other ships and towns, or become a pirate raiding towns and trade routes for supplies. Pirating will raise your bounty level though, and ports will fire on your ship if your wanted level gets too high. It's your choice on what to do, Captain..
There are a ton of ships to upgrade to and plenty of different weapons and upgrades to add. When in combat, you control your crew members and must assign them to do things. They can man cannons and other deck weapons, steer the ship, make repairs, all depending on what happens during the combat. Watch those water levels in your hull or you will sink! Plenty of ways to win the day though, from blowing other crew members off the deck or just putting holes in the ship. Just be ready for the boarding parties!!
Overall a great game and a fun time killer. Worth a play if you like any type of ship sim game or pirates themed game. Music and graphics are great and the canvas fog of war is top notch. Looking forward to where this game goes in the future as the DEVs are on top of this game!!

Thumb up in advance. The game has potential to become good FTL. What stops it from becoming one now:
- Becomes repetitive too quick. The battles lack variety and you quickly find the best cannon/team setup.
- The ships are all the same. Both your and enemy's. 2 cannons, 2 special cannons with minor variations. Why bother if default cannon setup works fine at all times.
- You become almost unkillable pretty quickly. Game become boring after that.
- All ships are the same - 10 cannon spots at your disposal. HP is the major difference. I'm pretty sure you could finish the game with starting ship.
Let's hope the devs will pay more attention to variety and difficulty.

From reading some the reviews I was weary of buying it, I was happy I did (on sale for £9.00 odd's)
I assumed it was gonna be just a silly boring, repetitive lil game, n it is repetitive though keeps changing the further ya go.
So far I haven't been able to get access to the FULL crew, I have two open slots that I can't use (yet)(after almost 22 hours lol)
I really like the Shrapnel Mortor, (keeps the enemy crew busy from shooting back as quickly IF ya target their cannons.
All in all, I think it's a great wee game, ( would be easier with finding more Captains Logs) (Stardate 426.5.89) HA HA

This game will however be the first exception to this because of it's sometimes terrible RNG and as others mentioned very
repetitive combat.
Now i have been playing on normal difficulty and i really enjoy the story, visuals and the combat, even though it is repetitive, it was also fun. Untill one point in the game.
So playing on just normal your game autosaves at certain points. But if your ship sinks the autosave does not work, you have to save with a captains log book. It's a cool idea but the execution of it is pretty bad, since finding these are very random. The diving bell to be able to get said logbooks was one of the first upgrades i got in the game, but because of RNG every single time i used it i never got a single logbook. So the only time i got to save properly was when they did the intro for the logbooks. About 5 hours into the game i had very low ship health after a difficulty fight, and just after that i had finally gained a logbook. So i made my way to the nearest port to finally save properly for the first time in like 4 hours and repair my ship. But when i get to the port before i get to save or repair i get SUPRISE attacked and i have no way of surviving it.
So now what? Well my ship sinks before i am able to escape and it leads me into another RNG situation where i have about 60% chance to survive after my ship was destroyed. I have 1 day and 18 hours of life left in me and 1 day and 18 hours to the closest port. Ofcourse along the way my captain decides to eat poisoned fish, (no option to decide if i want to eat it or not) and he looses 5% of his life and because of that never makes it to the port.
And now i can either restart the game or play through 3-4 hours of albeit fun but very repetative combat just to get to the point i was before. The game is way too repetative combatwise and RNG heavy to actually make it worth playing through those 4 hours again just to get back to the same point were i was. Having to save through logbooks and rely on heavy rng is cool, but it should be an option. Not a forced part of the main game.
So if you want a game with repetative combat where you can loose 4 hours of progress and then have to do that repetative combat for 4 hours again to get back to where you once were because of bad rng. Well this game is for you. Or i dont know maybe you are a very luck person or a sadist, that could also work. If you want to try this game i heavily urge you to buy it on sale.

Just like the kracken it grabs you and pulls you in. I found myself first of all thinking id play normally and be a upstanding citizen until i was hit by taxes, at that point the pirate in me took over and i was pillaging and plundering in no time.
all that aside, i would point out that i got it for a lot less for the asking price. I do think its a good game but i dont think its worth the full store price. wait for it on sale.

As I played through past the early acchivements basically every one was showing up as a rare acchivement even the one you have to do as part of the linear story which seems to say alot when so few people who have the game have played past the early game.

The story and the writing were decent enough. The game also looks pretty great and runs on Linux fabulously.
Where you run into problems is the gameplay. You get encounter after encounter after encounter and you pretty much work out it's the same strategy for everything. The upgrades are limited and linear too. You can find a few creative weapons, like spawning spiders or zombies on the enemy ship, but they're so weak, they're not worth using. After getting some upgrades and fairly quickly saving up to get the fanciest ship, you spend 90% of the game with no use for money and ratios.
I honestly think this would be a much better game if 4/5 of combat encounters were just stripped out.

The combat becomes pretty repetitive after a while, the game isn't really replayable and the story is kinda meh at best.
This game costs twice as much as similar games(like FTL) but doesn't have nearly enough content for it to be so expensive.
Just skip it or buy FTL in my opinion.

Even though it is cheap, but still very expensive for what you get.
You do the same damn thing in a very slow pace.
All you do is repair where cannons are automated and you dont navigate the ship at all during the battles.
The world map is just draggin your ship to ports and events which are pretty much the same. A list of events would have been more convenient.
This was in my wishlist for a long time.
Man i was wrong, i was bored out of my mind.
It took 2 hours for me to quit.
For the first time, i want my money back.

And for the first couple hours, it's not terrible. But it quickly becomes boring and repetitive.
There's no real strategy here, no hard choices. Just soak up a bunch of money, buy the biggest ship, skipping everything or almost everything in-between because it's a waste of money with zero strategic purpose, buy whatever guns you want, you're going to be drowning in guns and money anyway, never care what guns the enemy has because they're all the same and all pretty much useless, board and kill the enemy every single battle, rinse, repeat, ad nauseum.
The biggest saving grace of this game is you can teleport between ports you've visited, which greatly reduces the amount of time you have to spend slogging through near-identical battles before you realize the game never gets any better.
Is it the worst game I've ever played? No.
Do I regret buying it? Yes.

There's just something missing from the game. A sense of urgency, maybe? Where FTL has limited jumps to get to your goal and improve your ship, this game lets you grind to your heart's content. Once you have your optimal gear setup (crew killer works far too well - 4x Lightning Gun + 2x Fire Clusterbomb mortar), you can shred any ship, any fort while taking very little damage. It gets a little absurd.
The boss fights with the krakens are...uninspiring. They're not difficult skill-wise, but they have far too much health. After the first few hours, it really boils down to find ship, kill ship, go to some location far away on the map, return to another point on the map. I found myself nodding off to sleep because of how monotonous it all became.
The AI is also another gripe for me. Send a sailor to extinguish a fire, he'll extinguish that fire. And none of the others in the same section, because apparently the little dinguses can't do anything without orders. This results in a hell of a lot of micromanagement required, i.e. hitting pause button every few seconds, just to issue orders so that the AI doesn't do something really dumb. It breaks the flow of the game, and feels more like I'm watching a slideshow. It simply doesn't feel as smooth as FTL.
That said, I'll give the game props for the environmental hazards. Those are much more varied than FTL's ones, and have a much greater impact on how things play out.

It has a good grounded base , lore , mechanics etc, been well developed from a team of not many ppl i belive who got inspiration ,lets put it that way, from games like FTL:faster than light , Sunless sea and maybe some others(and its very own flair and new stuff but i think thats implicit) , these cited beeing from a very specific genere that normally has very certain niche of audience for good and bad. Many games tried to be inspired or directly copy FTL:faster than light in one way or another but i think that they failed at it in different lvls but i belive that this one did an ok/good if not more job using some of its mechanics etc, the feeling that gives the mix of FTL and Sunless sea its totally fine ,yes it is alot lighter in some ways comparing it to Sunless sea and thats cool as well ,affter all who that did pay play Sunless sea(i woud use SS but doesnt sounds ok..) never thought if only i coud battle like in FTL.. ¿right?.I wont dive into the argument , gameplay or very specific details about it , will take too long and u can very much find gameplays and information about it .I belive that at the end this game so far gone to the right direction and its at the right stage for the most for beeing launched as it was litle time ago , in what respects to taking inspiration and or mechanics from other games i see it tottally fine and normal affter all pretty much any idea or mechanic its more than done already for the most part , is there space*xd for more content , improvement or even new mechanics?sure and i woud love to see it and hopefully will but affter all inst that the case for what i belive emm.. every single game out there?

Basically everything in the game prevents you from succeeding in this game. I'd say 65% of the time the 'random' event missions scattered on the maps screw you over more often then benefit. The MOST annoying by far is the auto crew member wounding event that seems to happen SO much it is uncanny. Costing you a massive 125 gold to both revive him and then remove the 'of course' auto-negative trait you auto gain when you die (another very very annoying feature). You make such peanuts (22-25 gold) per enemy ship you sink. Capturing ships is much, much harder and yet you only a little bit more in loot (35 gold, 20 food). You should be able to take weapons off of the captured ships you get (using your hold spaces to store weps), then selling or using them in ports.
--
Getting rid of pirates within a area is over-all meaningless. You gain nothing except what you normally gain from defeating ships, except it's much harder. So why bother doing it, right?
--
Ship matching disgusts me also. It isn't random, like it should be. ALL ships you fight are all close to your ship class (90% of the time). So everyone has the same ship class as me? Come-On!
Trying to run in the mission options is worthless too - I've never been able to run away (they always catch me and get a free first shot on me in battle). Once your in battle, yes you can run, but again it seems uncanny how it seems to be much easier for the computer to run away in battle than you can. Hmmm curious...
--
Paying the 25 food to go to a different area is annoying too. FIRST time, sure no problem. But EVERY TIME? Come on.. Just another example of how the game just bleeds you dry stopping you any and every way it can so you don't succeed. It should be FREE to travel to already explored zones, and 25 food to fast travel there. It feels like to me, like a dungeon master in a RPG working against the players. This is what Abandon Ship feels like to me.
--
You get 125 or 150 gold (I forget) to explore a area. By far the best paying thing in the game bar-none. TO EXPLORE! Not fighting ships, not conquer pirates, not defeat the krackon, not freeing a town from the cult. EXPLORING A MAP AREA!!!!!! Really??? come-on
--
I've destroyed at LEAST 35 ships, captured 5 and I am barely anywhere in the game. The games all luck based. I hate to rely on luck - the game is all based on getting good mission events. Because most times you spend more to fix up your ship than you actually gain from defeating a ship.
---
The save system, again all aimed at screwing you over so you can't win or makes it astronomically difficult to win. Same difference to me. The captain logs are a joke and not even a funny one. Not only they ultra rare, every time you get one plan on having a crew member get hurt. So surprise-surprise again sure you get a captain's log save file, but it'll cost you 125 gold AND of course you'll need to head to port. I don't know if a surgeon on your ship revives crew, never got one.
---
The games 'wanted' system is worthless puke too. It is totally NOT worth trying to be a pirate yourself. It sucks royal donkey balls beyond sucking. Again another system put in by Fireblade to screw you over and stop you from succeeding.
---
The UI for the game is goofy. You can't zoom in or rotate, tit anything for the camera. Whoever thought of this idea for this game should be fired, because it's totally stupid. You should have a nice free-flowing camera a player can move around anyway they want. Also a MINI-MAP be nice too. It's so asinine how to see the large area map so you can figure out where to go. Or if no mini-map, then having the ability to move your ship in the big over-head map then.
---
The rating for this game I say is around 60-65%. It's playable if you can handle ALL the annoying issues and the fact that the game itself works against you to stop you from being successful.
