Really fun TPS with cool mechanics. Definitely could use a sequel that expands on the mechanics and the setting+characters, because the plot is very whatever and will not keep you playing as it's mostly an excuse to have you fight cool robots.

Its a good game with good mechanics. A fun and refreshing shooter with a lot of Ratchet and Clank undertones in said mechanics. It is however, quite short. I finished it in one extended sitting, and there is no NG+, so if you were to play again you'd likely stick to what you already know works, rather than be able to spend those resources on upgrading and trying out new weapons with the old, already upgraded ones available when needed. The most mundane weapons are the most powerful, with the extravagant being weak and the rare being useless.

The assault rifle has as much fire rate as the Burst MG, and 3 times the ammo. The Burst MG only appears in weapon pods, so getting ammo for it is impossible. The Laser Cannon is meant to be a battleship weapon, yet fully upgraded it gets out-DPSed by an unupgraded assault rifle. Why would you even try using any of them, waste a slot or spend the upgrade points on them when the assault rifle is better for all of those things?

Get it when its on sale. I got it for about €5 and I'd suggest you do too. If there was a NG+ mode, it could've been worth €10 just for having the bit of extra playtime and satisfaction.

I plan on playing this game again and this is why,

Vanquish is what many would call a cover shooter, but it is so much more than that. Its an adrenaline fueled arcade style shooter that carries the oh so familiar action movie tropes of a gruff but badass hero pit against hordes of futuristic enemies. If that isn't immediately attractive in a game then I will go a bit more in depth.

The upgrading system is what I enjoyed the most. It is kind of meh on the surface but as I played I found that the weapons I was upgrading were getting crazy strong as I stuck with them. There are a TON of upgrade levels for each gun. My personal favorite was the armor piercing pistol that could one shot regular enemies and decimate bosses. With each upgrade you get more ammo capacity, reload speed, and damage. I had a blast rocking the pistol, assault rifle, and shotgun.

The story is kind of out there as somewhat generic, but not really boring. If you haven't played or heard the story before there are a few interesting plot points that will surprise you but nothing truly special in an action game. I found the plot endearing but it was second fiddle to the gameplay.

The gameplay was front row and it is in your face about it. The slide mechanic is a work of genius that makes for a fun aspect of a game for newbies and a way to really challenge yourself in getting a high score while pulling off amazing combos of gun play using the slide and slow motion abilities.

I have a soft spot for SEGA but this game was truly a gem of its time and has aged pretty well. It isn't a super extravagant AAA title but its a lot of fun and I think it could spread out from just the niche community that has enjoyed it for nearly a decade.

Introduction

Vanquish is a third-person shooter with high mobility and fast-paced action.

Pros & Cons

Pros:
+ Fast-paced combat with high emphasis on movement
+ Over-the-top cutscenes
+ Easy to learn, hard to master

Cons:
- Underpowered melee combat
- You’ve probably seen this kind of story 100 times already
- Unfairly hard challenges with enemies that one-shot you

Story

The game takes place in a distant future, technological progress brought space stations, robots and cyber-prosthetics, but it also brought new kinds of weapons. The game begins with a terrorist attack on the US carried out by a microwave emitter from space. You play as Sam, a soldier with an augmented suit, sent to assist US marines in destroying this weapon. For Sam there’s also another more personal mission, to save an American scientist responsible for the invention of his suit and coincidentally being the one was forced to develop this weapon of mass destruction. It’s not an original story, never the less it’s interesting to follow and it has some good twists at the end.

Gameplay

This isn’t your typical third person shooter, where you sit in cover most of the time shooting at enemies, who decided to pop their heads out of cover. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. You’re constantly moving around the battlefield flanking your enemies and dodging bullets. All thanks to your augmented suit, that allows you to do a quick slide and slowdown time while you’re moving. Of course, there’s a drawback to this ability, the suit has an energy gauge, which, if depleted fully, will make your movement slower than normal forcing you to take cover and wait for it to recharge.

When it comes to weaponry the game can offer you two interesting weapons to play around with, apart from the usual assault rifles, machine guns, pistols and rocket launchers that are of course present in the game. The first one being a laser, that can lock on to multiple targets and destroy them simultaneously. The second one is a disc launcher, that can shoot of enemies’ limbs. They’re robots, so don’t wary about the gore. Crippling some of the bigger enemies grants you a lot of tactical advantages, making one of the most useful weapons to have. You can also upgrade your weapons, but the progression is slow and it doesn’t seem to affect much except for the amount of ammo you can carry. Which is useful, by the way, since you have to deal with hordes of enemies.

The only thing that bothered me during my playthrough is the melee combat. Since you move very fast and have a selection of short range weapons, you’re feeling encouraged to hit enemies in their backs, but the melee makes it very hard to take on more than one enemy in close quarters. Because every time you use it, your suit goes into overcharge making you slow and vulnerable. It doesn’t matter how much energy you had, it’s always the same.

Graphics & Audio

Technically it looks great, the models are detailed, textures are of high quality, there are lots of special effects. But it feels like the game is lacking in design, it’s very hard to differentiate by screenshot at what level you’re looking at. The enemy design is just bland, though I can understand it, since they’re robots, they are assembled on the same factory after all. The animation on the other hand is great, everything looks smooth and natural. What’s most important for a shooter, it feels like you’re doing damage when shooting at a giant robot with a health bar twice its’ size. The music is also great, it complements the action nicely. Though, there isn’t anything memorable to add to your playlist after beating the game. The voice acting is ok, it feels like an anime voice over, with those overly exaggerated emotions.

Performance

Specs: Intel Core i5-7300HQ, 12GB RAM, NVIDIA GTX 1050 4GB.

The game runs at steady 60 FPS on max settings in 1080p. Though there were a couple of levels in the last act, that made FPS jump between 40-50. Thankfully they were fairly short and the framerate stayed stable after that.

Conclusion

If you’re looking for a fast-paced action game like Bayonetta, Devil May Cry or Doom, this is an ideal game for you. It’s fast-paced, hard and addictive.

YANOGA REVIEW

GRAPHICS - ★ ★ ★ ☆ ☆
''Vanquish'' was orginally released in 2010 but I would say it aged very well! The cutscenes looking damn fine beside some weird Lip-Sync problems at a few shots. The enemy designs are really interessting but they repeat themselves after 50% of the game and the world (while looking quite unique and cool) is mostly in grey & brown with little variety.
The style would be most comparable with Metal Gear Rising Reveange.

MUSIC - ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆
Some 90's Trance Melodies but without the Drum. I found it fitting and quite amusing. Good Soundtrack!

STORY - ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆
The story is brainout Action with cliché punchlines & topics (Bad Russia). Main-Hero Sam is a badass who smokes a zigarette before shooting some Motherfuckers in their head. But the Action is badass! Many Cutscenes (like every 15 Minutes) which are mostly entertaining and over the top. It's like playing a Michael Bay Movie because every 5 Minutes something explodes.

GAMEPLAY - ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
Biggest strength of this game is his gameplay. ''Vanquish'' is a Third-Person Run'n'Gun. Searching cover, shoothing some robots before gliding which nitro over the battlefield to finish it with a Slow Mo Backflip Headshot. There is even a button to smoke a ziggo. Different weapons and a few little but very fresh mechanics.
Very innoative, fast and enjoyable!

WORTH BUYING - ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆
When you like Gears of War or ''Future-Shooter'' and you can have fun with brainless ''In-Your-Face'' Action, you should play ''Vanquish''. The Story is really short (1 Run tooked me like 4-5 Hours) so I would suggest waiting for a small Sale when this borthers you.
At the End I had a lot of fun with this game even when it's an cliché action blockbuster.

LENGTH : 5 Houirs for Campaign

BUGS : Minor

Vanquish is essentially a spicy gears of war campaign with platinum games pizzazz and fun mechanics to play with.

Difficulty highly depends on what mission your playing and it can vary within acts, but hard mode felt like a consistent challenge to me.

Play time was short and sweet (my save lists 4 hours 50 minutes).

Vanquish narrowly escapes the 2010's cover shooter curse of being a grey monotonous slog by making it colourful and introducing features such as the boost slide, slo mo reaction and the awesome (albeit way too expensive for what it actually does) melee attack.

These features keep the gameplay engaging and it can take solid time to get to grips with them but the game becomes a lot more fun once you do.

Only complaint is that the super abilities you have access to aren't complemented very well by the environments you play in, the slide launches you into death if you use it slightly wrong and it's really obvious where they added long hallways just so you didn't forget to use it, as for the slow motion, it is great when it activates automatically after taking too much damage since you can rethink your positioning, but using it manually feels janky sometimes since you have to take a low stance, tilting the crosshair ever so slightly away from where the enemy would have been and into the cover they are hiding behind.

The melee attack looks really cool but using it doesn't have significant enough application to warrant it draining all your energy (preventing you from using any other ability unless automatic slow motion was already activated) so it only ends up being good for a single enemy right in front of you or if you want to punch a boss to death because it's cool.

Don't expect much in the way of acrobatic or visceral combat either, that's all in cutscenes and honestly doesn't show up as often as i'd like.

Story is standard military campaign cut up into 5 acts and Sam's ulterior motives never end up being important enough to sway the mood or objective of the story.

Solid content, great PC port options and stability, super fun to play, I can't imagine how good this game must've looked in comparison to its direct competition in 2010.

This is the perfect gateway character action game. Platinum knocks it out of the park with its quality, and the game is fast enough and free-flowing to allow for a lot of player expression. The game's mechanics aren't too complicated as well, and it encourages you to grow as the game progresses. It's also pretty short at around 7 hours, so it's definitely worth a shot and has tons of replay value

Short but a really fun action shooting game. This game was originally released in 2010 so it has aged well. It sets up for a sequel but it's been too long so there's no hoping when it might come.

+ Good story with a lot of action
+ Sprinting feels very cool
+ Lots of guns to use and upgrade

- Whenever you die and resume, one of your gun randomly gets downgraded without any sort of warning. This is the second dumbest idea I've seen in a game. Fortunately there's a workaround, you have to return to title screen and resume from there to not lose your upgrades. Bad game design which also follows my second con,
- Sometimes when enemies die, they drop important things like upgrades in unreachable areas. This makes you lose valuable resources. Incidentally, the upgrade system is also weird, if you don't know how it works, you won't be able to max your guns
- Melee attacks have really long cooldown
- Stupid and forced end credit

> There should've been a way to upgrade and reduce overheating, would've been very cool

A really fun third person shooter. Sliding around and slow motion makes this a lot more interesting than the usual third person shooters. Cinematics are pretty sick. Grew to love Sam by the end of the game. Definitely get this if it is on sale.

I think Vanquish is a good proof of concept for what could have been an even better sequel.

Shooting mechanics are solid, but enemy and arena repetition kind of make it difficult for me to play this for longer than an hour. One would assume that with a studio as talented as PlatinumGames, these problems could have been ironed out with relative ease in a hypothetical sequel.

Alas, ‘twas not to be. At best, this is a portrait of what could have been a bright future for the TPS genre.

Probably the only cover-shooter you'll need to spoil the rest of the genre for yourself. Or to convince you it has some good in it after all. To put things brief but lazily, this is Max Payne but really fast and really good.

Most cover-centric TPS are interested in making you wait for health regen and lob nades into enemy nests. Usually, quick thinking takes a back seat to patience and planning. Vanquish instead asks you to zip around on your butt, catching enemies out in the open and surprise dropkicking the high ground turret from 6 o’clock. Cover goes from a necessity to more of a convenience -- a slap on the wrist for being clumsy, or a quick 1-2 second breather right before breaking out at mach 5 once again. And it never gets old.

The game may be many rungs above most the genre, but it doesn't mock its heritage or re-invent all too much. This is Shinji Mikami, after all -- the very man responsible for over-the-shoulder, and he seems receptive to post-re4 staples. You got a nade button and a melee button. You cycle your arsenal from fallen weapons many times through a single encounter. You even have Max Payne on-demand slow-mo. But thanks to weapon upgrades, many unique melee moves, and a trusty radar, these familiar mechanics take on new symbiotic purposes. It's an already dynamic game with superfluous heaps of variety on top of it. You can have as much fun juggling weapons/combos as you can sticking to bread and butter. Baring the outdated and generic visuals, the game feels way ahead of its time over a decade after launch.

Vanquish is all so obviously Platinum and Mikami it hurts -- from the rule of cool, to the deceptive simplicity, to the pristine pacing. Story could suck less though.

And it's a quality PC port!

Vanquish sets in an alter world where Russia and the US are in a futuristic war. You are Sam (who looks like Sam in Metal Gear Rising, I am bad with faces) wearing high-tech armor helping Uncle Sam to fight against Russian robots. The storytelling is not the point of this game, as the story and characterizing are negligible, lines are very cheesy, and voice acting is kind of bad. The gameplay, however, was very innovative at the time and still entertaining today.

From what I know, Gears of War created the cover base third-person shooter, but this sub-genre got stagnated at the time Vanquish was made, in the sense that players spend too much time behind the cover. Vanquish renovated the formula by granting more ability to be aggressive. Translating into the gameplay means your armor can get you to move super-fast, do instant melee kill (for normal enemies) and most importantly, enter bullet time, under the premise you don’t run the suit overheated. Otherwise, you have to wait until the suit backs online, during which all the abilities are disabled and you get very vulnerable. Hence, the core of the combat no longer is two parties hiding behind cover shooting each other, you can run behind enemies’ hideouts with high mobility and kill them with melee or bullet time. How to manage the suit to not run it dry becomes the key, giving the combat some depth. Once you master the skill, combat is very satisfying as you feel kind of badass.

The combat is not bad, but it is not all sunshine and rainbow. Some shortcomings hurt the experience.
- When enter bullet time, you automatically are in low stance, meaning you can’t see some enemies that you normally can see, like those behind cover. The worst situation of all is facing the scorpion-like robots. Their weak point is at the back, but in low stance you can’t see their back, which is very awkward.
- You have to hold to pick up ammo (actually it is picking up the same weapons you have to recharge ammo) instead of automatic pick up. Likewise, you need to hold to open weapon boxes and then hold to pick up weapons. This is very sluggish for such a fast-paced game.
- Friendly forces are with you almost throughout the whole game. They not only are useless for doing negligible damage but also are burdens that block your way, your sight and your shots. They are not even qualified for distraction because once you hit an enemy, he only comes after your butt no matter how many AI soldiers are around him.
- Aiming camera speed is too slow, yet it cannot be adjusted.
- There is some bull$hit instant kill you just can’t react, not sure if this has anything to do with difficulty (I played at hard difficulty).
- This game has some very weird lighting and strange color palettes because of the engine. They made far objects hard to identify (so they colored the most common enemy red).
- During combat, visual gets quite messy and overwhelming because gunfire, explosion, laser, sparkles, flashing, smoke, fire, friendly solders and enemies are everywhere, and the camera shakes so much like it wants to shake the breakfast out of your stomach. Frame rate can also get all over the place during combat.

To sum it up, Vanquish has some issues, it is not an unforgettable game, but the overall experience is not bad and the gameplay design is quite unique. If you run out of games to play, might as well try it. It is quite cheap and doesn’t take too long to finish.

Huh, this game ended up being pretty fun despite it in all honesty not being a very good game. It feels confused, like it wants to be a standard cover shooter like gears of war but then also wants to be a high speed boomer shooter, and it doesn't feel like the high speed meshes all too well with the shooting combat. There are also too many sections that aren't just straightforward shooting in open arenas which is what the game is best at.

That all being said, when you do enter combat in big open arenas it can be really fun, especially if you play more aggresively and leave cover more often to get up close to the enemies. The fact that there are only like 2 main types of enemies in the entire game does really suck, and the fact that every boss fight is repeated at least once (except for a really late game one) also really sucks, but the game is short enough that the repitition doesn't bother me that much. The game only took me like 6 or 7 hours to beat and I feel little reason to go back to it.

I've said a lot of negative things in this review but honestly the core gameplay is fun so I would pick this game up if it goes on sale.

A third person shooter mixed with the action-oriented design philosophies of PlatinumGames sounds like a good idea, because it is (for the most part..)!
This is the definitive version of a game that was sadly restricted by the consoles from two generations ago. Put the lackluster story aside and you got a fast paced shooter that will keep you on your toes most of the time. Charmingly over the top as many of PG's works are.
Very recommended.

Vanquish is a third-person action shooter that is featuring a powerful suit that lets you slide around fast, gives you slowmotion powers and makes you overall more powerful.

pros
++ gunplay
++ you can slide around a lot. fun and a bit broken
+ weapon variety with upgrades
+ variety of map set pieces
+ enemy variety and some interesting boss fights
+ graphics
+ You can set 3 separate mouse sensitivies: 1 during movement, 2. for aiming out of the hip and 3. for zooming

cons
- bareboned plot that only gets going in the last act. it is a bit comical that many short cutscenes are wasted on the protagonist smoking cigarettes instead of advancing the plot, introducing more characters and developing them
- reloading and picking up weapons is binded to the same button. it often leads to awkward moments when you suddenly find yourself with the wrong weapon
- too many invisible walls
- quick-time events

Verdict

Vanquish is a decent action-ridden shooter with a minimal plot. If you are fine with this, you can't do much wrong with Vanquish. Due to the lack of a polished story, the game isn't that memorable though.

Vanquish is the port of the cult classic shooter from the 360 era, created by the guy that made Resident Evil.

Story:

You play as Sam. In the future most countries fight for very scarce resources, but the US comes up with a way to alleviate some of that stress with a station named the Province. When a group named Order of the Russian Star take over the station and destroy San Francisco with it, Sam and a group of American soldiers led by Colonel Burns to take it back.

The story is wacky and over the top and barely makes any sense and it's definitely part of the charm. It's definitely one of those plots where you have to turn off your brain and enjoy the crazy unfold in front of you. I enjoyed it overall, but I'll admit most of the writing is just downright bad, with plenty of cliche twists and story beats that you've seen plenty times before.

Graphics:

Vanquish still looks pretty good to this day. I'll admit I'm not really a massive fan of the environments as they are often these very bland futuristic battlegrounds that just look really mediocre and a lot of the levels look really similar to one another. However I do like how grand the scale of the game is and that's reflected in the battles which are just downright crazy with plenty of stuff going on like explosives which just look awesome.

Character models look pretty generic, as they look like they could have been ripped out of any 360 era third person shooter, however I will admit I did love how Sam's armor looked. It has this very sleek and futuristic design, it's just a very cool looking suit.

Audio:

The audio design is great. Everything from guns, Sam's suit thrusters, explosions and everything else just sounds really crisp it's awesome. The voice acting just like the story is a pretty mixed bag considering it does have that Japanese cheese most people are aware of. Quite a few actors go for the over the top performance and honestly it just adds to the charm of the game. Not to even mention it's absolutely awesome pulsating techno score, which just makes each firefight incredibly awesome.

Gameplay:

Vanquish is a third person shooter where you go around and gun your enemies down, but with one cool twist and that is the movement system. One thing Vanquish is well know for is how Sam's suit makes you incredibly agile. Stuff like rolls and thrusters make movement incredible and it's honestly incredibly fun sliding long distances and using it to flank enemies and just wasting all of them.

Combat is a pretty standard third person shooter fare. You aim (also you can aim down sights) and shoot, that's about it. You have plenty of different weapons at your disposal like shotguns, snipers and rifles, however I really found a good chunk of the weapons sort of useless, the shotguns especially, which wound getting me killed more than they helped me.

However the game has a few faults. A few of the objectives you run into throughout the game are rather poorly designed, mostly the ones where you're stuck in areas with limited amounts of cover or where you have to protect something. Honestly the friendly AI kind of sucks and you have to constantly revive them, which is just annoying and when playing on higher difficulties will get you killed.

The game however is on the shorter side, with it only taking me roughly 6 hours to finish the entire thing. There is some extra play value if you go for the side challenges, but honestly most of those are just not fun and really annoying to do and not worth doing.

Verdict:

Vanquish is a great game and I had an absolute blast with the campaign. I'm glad to see it on PC and playing it with mouse and keyboard was just quite the experience. If you even wanted to play what's basically an action blockbuster with a Japanese twist, definitely give Vanquish a whirl.

Final Rating:
8.5/10

Pros:
+ Incredibly fun gameplay
+ Crazy over the top plot and action
+ Great soundtrack and audio design

Cons:
- Side content is not very well designed
- Short

Short Review

Vanquish is a 3rd person shooter on steroids. The game goes full speed as you enter into a robotic armor suit that makes you move at high speeds and even slow time. Youre up against a threat to the United States imposed by the typical Russian James Bond villains. But the story will have some twists.

The gameplay is really impressive and responsive, you slide at the high speed through the environment looking for cover and shoot a load of bullets at the waves of robots that march against you.

In the end, fighting hordes and hordes of the same robots and bosses may seem tedious, but the sheer adenaline you get by playing the game and running and jumping and shooting and freezing time makes the experience enjoyable, if not addictive

I Rate it 8/10

Not a bad port for a game that came out over a decade ago. Surprisingly demanding though. FPS drops happen every once and while, especially when there is a million characters on screen. Other than that it's a beautiful looking game. It's amazing how much the visuals improve when you slap that 1080p resolution on it.

Gameplay is still as slick as I remember from back in the day, good arcade action. Story/plot; Very cheesy, very sci-fi, very anime but very fun. There is totally room for a sequel or some kind of reboot in the future.

I give it a 7.8/10. FPS issues here and there... um. Too short?

Vanquish is hi octane third person cover shooter with stylish presentation and over the top characters. Storyline is forgettable and takes a back seat because main focus is on dynamic gameplay with hi speed action, mobility and bullet time.

Pros:
- Fast paced action;
- Good optimisation;
- Advanced movement;
- Enemy variety;

Cons:
- Gameplay interrupted to often;
- Mediocre story;
- Short length;

If you're expecting a Proper Shooter, don't!
The game is amazing for it's other stuff you can do while shooting like slo-mo,
Rocket slide, both, roll etc. that too very seamlessly.
Enemies are mostly repeated so you won't get that different experience although bosses do take it up a notch and slowly become mobs themselves...!
Environment visually may remain same, so it may get boring seeing the same thing but levels are different with diffirent covers(that can be blown...oh crysis).
If you like simple shooting experience with movement gimmicks which you have to use to win because it gets hard, did I say there are different types of guns with unique attack which also are upgradable in stats each time you find them again, and the feeling of death by OHKO, and last ditch effort for survival when your suit overheats if you use too much energy or get hit too much..
All this makes for a good, fast, skill and tactical gameplay which definately takes your attention away from boring environment design!

It's a non-open world shooter, a rarity these days so I had to give it a try. But it's hard to like anything else about it. Controls are clunky - vaulting and slowing down time requires strange combos. Sound is bad, half the time the voice lines are too quiet to make out (not that there's any deep dialogue), music is extremely repetitive and doesn't correspond at all to what's happening. Your character is cool because he smokes every five minutes. Your behind-the-scenes female coordinator/commander/hacker/assistant is supposed to be eye candy so you'll randomly be shown her from a viewpoint below her butt. The guy fighting by you is a big macho guy who's even cooler than you because you take off your helmet only for a cutscene every two minutes, while his is always off. He also has the biggest gun, obviously, but don't expect him to ever kill anything. He will randomly switch between disdain, to put it mildly, and friendship. Anyway, graphics are mediocre even for a port of a 2010 game. And the design itself... everything is grey and it's hard to tell where anything is other than brightly outlined weapons.

I'm not gonna write a in-depth review this time. I just want to write about something that bugged me after revisiting this game. Back when Vanquish got released on PC, I absolutely loved it. I loved how fast it was and the action seemed pretty cool to me. I finished the game in about 6 hours, nearly getting all of the hidden statues (missed only 1) and left it behind with satisfaction.

Fast forward to over 3 years later in 2021; when I suddenly got a craving for fast and exciting action games. So I started to look through my library and found Vanquish again. Remembering the good time I had with it, I reinstalled the game, fired it up and... honestly I can see that it's flawed. I did not find much entertainment in Vanquish at all and this time, I thought of it as a generic shooter with a speed gimmick. The gameplay is fun, but it punishes players way too much for trying to have fun. Want to kick enemies in the face and send them flying away? Well that consumes your entire energy bar and puts the main character in a overheat mode, leaving you in a grave state where you can die at any second. Want to punch enemies really hard from a close range? Same with kicking. Playing on a higher difficulty? Stick to the covers or die. Most of the things that are fun in this game are always on some sort of cooldown or leave you in a very bad state.

Look, I can see why the developers have limited the players this way; it's because they did not want the game to get very easy thanks to OP abilities. But certainly they could have done this in a better way. Maybe the kick could have consumed %50 or %75 of energy instead of all of it. Maybe the game could have used a separate health bar. Maybe they could have added an additional, unlockable mode where you could go batshit insane with the abilities you have. The way they designed this... it just doesn't seem much fun to me.

So uh... I really cannot bring myself to recommend this game now. If you asked me what I thought of Vanquish back then, I would have told you that it's one of the best and fastest action games ever made, deserving of its praises. But now? I cannot do that. If you want to play this game, I recommend not overhyping yourself with all the praise from the users and media, and never going beyond normal difficulty setting.

Ahead of its time blaze of glory, fast paced third person shooter thats technically cover based however to enjoy it to its fullest one should avoid cover instead focusing on frantically movement and thinking outside the box (slowing down time to shoot a grenade mid-air for max effect). The campaign is short, story is a 70s cheese fest filled with one liners and there are some dated elements from the 2010s such a QTE, turret sections etc but on the whole an absolute blast especially if you can pick it up on sale.

Glad to find this game was on Steam, really enjoyed the game from start to finish.

The good:

- Stables FPS (didn't have any drops or bugs)
- Fun to play if you like Third Person Shooters (both on keyboard and controller)
- Guns
- Mission Challenges (Number 6 still haunts me to this day)
- Very cheap even without discount (Argentina)

The bad:

- Story:
- Neither good or bad, it's just there to fill
- Not that long to finish it (first blind playthrough was almost 8 hours)
- IA can be awful sometimes
- Pretty linear in most missions (me shoot, me go forward)

I really recommend to give this game a shot if you like TPS, especially for the price that is listed.
Mission Challenges are pretty tough but adds a good amount of hours, as well as the achievements.

I rate 3rd person perspective action game Vanquish 4/5. Good. Vanquish is consistently way more AWESOME than it is STUPID. Even during those times when Vanquish is being STUPID it manages to be so bad it’s good.

THE GOOD:

+Vanquish provides an unrelenting sense of urgency and consistently exciting action throughout.

+Nearly everything about this game works well. No bugs.

+The cover system is well implemented and the use of bullet-time when you have low health is particularly well done.

+There’s a great, visceral sense of speed also.

+The controls generally work wonderfully, are highly responsive and can be rebound to whatever keys you want. The additional buttons on my gaming mouse were recognized and usable by the game. Rebinding the controls and changing other menu settings was extremely easy. The game itself runs and loads very quickly.

+The graphics are generally slick and the futuristic chrome environments are beyond-cool. I also love how the background battles often come CLOSE also, with huge spacecraft crashing right next to you (and onto you if you don’t run fast enough) and huge skyscrapers and other structures coming apart nearby (and even during one sequence, directly underneath you).

+This is another game which occasionally features HUGE metal doors.

+The weapons are good. Usually games in which you use transforming weaponry (to switch from one weapon to another) suck but this is an exception to that rule. The transforming weapons are awesome and the ways they transform as you switch from one to another is fun to see over and over again. The weapon leveling system works ok. There’s a good though fairly standard variety of weapons along with a few exotic weapons. They are all potentially useful.

+The enemies (most of them anyway) are really cool looking and have fairly smart AI which makes them fun to fight.

+Cool looking spacecraft and weapons and enemies and allies and environment. Everything is just really, really cool looking.

+Vanquish has 3 default difficulty levels and an unlockable 4th difficulty level.

+The game’s save system is automatic and works wonderfully with no frustration.

THE MEDIOCRE:

+/-The voice acting is generally pretty mediocre. It’s not the worst voice acting ever but it isn’t good either. Each character has a default tone of voice and usually doesn’t deviate much from it resulting in fairly one-dimensional characterizations.

+/-The music is mostly standard composed of generally forgettable techno music with a few orchestral strains here and there for the major plot twists.

+/-You fight alongside A.I. controlled allies but they are not very effective (if at all). Mostly you wind up either ignoring them or constantly rescuing them (in return for weapon pickups). The friendly A.I. characters should be good enough (and they should be tough enough) to occasionally rescue YOU but, like in most games, they never are. They end up just being there for show to make you feel like you are not actually alone, doing everything yourself.

+/-You can man turrets and drive a few walking vehicles a few feet (basically they are turrets on legs) but other than that, there are no vehicles to drive which you can control.

+/-As usual for any 3rd person perspective game I play, I really wish this was a 1st person perspective game instead because I would have had a lot more fun that way and would have had an easier time playing it.

+/-Though the graphics are generally excellent, Vanquish’s colors are so tightly controlled the game could look drab to some people. Silver and gray with a bit of green and some red for enemies are the predominant colors you’ll see in this game. Sometimes, in terms of color, Vanquish can even look washed out to the extent that you may feel as if you are just few inches away from playing a videogame in grayscale. The game still looks awesome but it isn’t very colorful.

+/-Vanquish is fairly intense but fairly short.

THE BAD:

-Quick time events. This game has situations wherein you must repeatedly press a button (sometimes with little to no warning that you are going to have to) to emerge victorious in an action scene. I didn’t find them that difficult to do with my mouse and keyboard while playing on the easiest difficulty level but others have reported significant difficulties.

-Vanquish has no alternate endings which is really too bad because the ending the game does have isn’t so great. Essentially, after all your efforts, you get a generally bad ending. There is no way to change the plot at all either. This common videogame situation results in fairly low replayability. Yeah, there are difficulty levels to make the game more or less frustrating but that’s it. No real plot choices to make (and there’s certainly room for some choices to occur in this game).

-There is one bizarre problem with the controls. You cannot jump wherever or whenever you want. This is a design oversight but it doesn’t end up being as bad as it sounds. This situation does feel very strange, especially considering you are wearing a high-tech power armor. You can only jump over cover which you have been previously hiding behind by pressing a combination of buttons or when you are at the bottom of (or at the top of) a ladder. If I actually wore a power armor with jets attached to it, I am not certain I would be prone to worrying about where ladders were before jumping up and down anyhow. Amazingly, this situation doesn’t come up much in Vanquish but it does occur just often enough to feel oddly clunky, especially when compared to how free your movement is otherwise (given that you can slide around wherever you want at high speed (even up and down staircases).

-Misogynistic portrayal of the only major female character (other than the President of the United States). In the beginning of the game we get a near upskirt angle shot of her rear end. At the end of the game she is shown screaming like a ninny followed by romantic behavior toward the main character that was in no way developed during the entire course of the game (beyond her screaming like a ninny a few seconds earlier). I’m surprised they didn’t decide to have the character faint at least once.

AND THE STUPID:

~There’s no way around it. Using jets attached to your power armor to slide around on your knees looks really stupid. It looks stupid and really, really funny. It looks even more stupid when you slide smoothly up staircases this way. It’s a really cool game mechanic but this doesn't change how silly it looks. The other position your character has, sliding around on his side, looks way better. Sliding up flights of stairs still seems bizarre though no matter what position you’re in. I had a lot of good laughs seeing this go on.

~This game could have been about an extraterrestrial invasion. It should have been about a rogue military artificial intelligence trying to take over a space station to launch an assault on earth. Instead it’s about rogue Russian fanatics in space with the use of advanced robots to fight for them. There’s more to the plot than that of course but the plot only gets more stupid from there. However, it becomes so laughably bad that it becomes funny and entertaining in its own right.

~The dialogue in this game is usually bad. Sometimes it’s so bad (and truly bizarre) it’s good.

For example:

“San Francisco is gone now!” says the main character.
“That was for the good of all Americans.” retorts a side character.

Wow.

~The characters are stupidly portrayed. The main character smokes A LOT. He smokes all through the game and he tries hard to look cool doing it. Great message to send to children there. There are no character customization options at all.

~This is a good single player game but it could have made a GREAT cooperative and multiplayer gaming experience too.

This is one of my most favourite games of all time and it's also, for many people, relatively mediocre in terms of story, gameplay and mechanics. But it has such soul when it comes to all three of those that I just can't be mad or find it distasteful as a video game. Sam Gideon is a likeable protagonist (who can't jump at all for some reason) and the story is hilariously goofy on the same level as Metal Wolf Chaos XD (San-fran had to go, don't you dare argue otherwise.) The gunplay and movement mechanics are relatively nothing you've never seen before but it does it in it's own interesting way that I think makes it unique even if by a small margin. I can't recommend this game enough if just to experience it for yourself. Love it or hate it, it's a goofy game with a goofy story and rocket powered kneecaps that blast you across the ground at 40km/h and I only wish I could play it again for the first time again. 11/10

SEGA has certainly outdone themselves with this port, now able to fully experience the true masterful level of detail put into every asset of the game at a locked 4k120hz on an oled in Linux, with options for each working out of the box. This is one of the best titles of that generation, and to now no longer face the dead end of exclusivity is a beautiful gesture. If you have the time, PLEASE experience this yourself rather than taking my word for it, you'll know within minutes of finishing the tutorial why its such a hit movement and action wise.

Vanquish is a game where you get to punch robots in space in a cool super suit that lets you dash around at high speeds. The controls are nice and feel best with a controller, making dashing easier to do sharp turns or other cool things.

It is a short game but it is very fun and has extra modes after completing the game to make it replayable. You can also upgrade weapons throughout the game and there are a lot of weapons, so you can try to upgrade different guns each time. The harder difficulties are hard but they are fun and don't make any weapons feel useless. One thing to note is, the suit uses energy for a lot of things like melee attacks, dashing and a slow motion mode. If you don't manage your energy very good you will be exposed to enemy fire, so make sure to be near cover if you are going to run out to melee or dash.

I kinda wish the game was longer, and that punching didn't drain all your energy so quickly so I could keep punching robots!!!

I first played this game when it came out on xbox 360, but i never managed to finish it. when it got released on PC i got really excited about playing it, but never got enough free time to finish it.
Yesterday I sat through the whole game for 4-5 hours, and man, i should've done that a long time ago.
The story isn't that notable, but the 5 hours of adrenaline pumping gameplay really make up for it. if you want something that feels like you're playing an action anime and is fast paced and extremely fun, THIS GAME IS FOR YOU!
9/10 i'll probably play it again soon on the hardest difficulty.

Anyway the game is really good but getting killed by 1 hit really sucks but as expected from PlatinumGames its good and hard. Well this was the easiest game out of all the PlatinumGames Ive played. Most tough one was Bayonetta then Metal Gear Rising Revengeance.

There were some glitches but im experienced in these so tackled it easily. Btw the USA president looks like Hillary Rodham Clinton for some reason haha.

This is probably what the Japanese think of when they think of the US military.

A fun over the top action fest. Love the fast movement and gunplay. Story is nonsense and doesn't take itself seriously, which is great for a title like this. Only gripes are that the game is somewhat buggy, characters would get stuck and bar progress, and had 1 crash to desktop, and that the developers don't seem to understand that insta kill attacks aren't fun to play against.

Still I wish more games were like this. Short (5-6 hours) experiences but filled with set piece moments without filler. Also this game has sadly joined other games like Warhammer 40k Space Marine in the desperately needs a sequel due to cliffhanger club

If you want another shooter in your game library, just buy it; you don't really need me to say anything about it.

------------------------

For those that are a little more picky about their shooting games, this is an arcade-frantic fast paced shooter built to look like a slow paced cover shooter. It borrows heavily from other games like Halo, Gears of War and Killzone but then promptly gives you a rocket slide boost and an arsenal that lets you play the levels like a roller coaster instead of a mud box.

You can still slow down and play it like a cover based shooter if you need to catch your breath, but the real fun is diving into a pile of enemies, slowing time to take them all out before they know what hit them and then rocket sliding your way out of danger and back into cover. If that sounds like fun, just stop reading and buy the game.

Graphically this is the pinnacle of 2010 graphics, but still holds up 10 years later and this PC version is a remaster from 2017 that plays smooth and with a good frame rate and resolutions.

Outside of the game play and the graphics however, there is room to complain:

The story is pure rehashed cheese. It's the future, but it's still just Russia versus the USA with the same cliches you would expect from this overused scenario. The voice acting is typical low quality Sega, or bad Saturday morning cartoon style. The entire training sequence is an extended recreation of the original Halo waking-up and suit testing sequence from that older game. The main hero is the standard tough-guy gritty voice and he smokes constantly, which will annoy some people.

But really, most of these complaints are not going to bother the majority of people who play this genre. The meat of the game is to take the mashup of cover based shooter games that it borrows from, toss them in a blender and give you a way to speed up the action and it does this in a shiny package with lots of firepower.

If it's good enough for Rich Evans, it's good enough for me!

the only thing that really brings it down as a fast pace action game is being interrupted every 5 min for for a cutscene. or to have a cutscene interrupted so you can press a switch, or run down a hallway without opposition, only to trigger another cutscene. the QTE's were unexpected, and rare enough that it's always kinda off putting when you do get them.

One thing I didn't know when starting, is that if a weapon is upgraded and you drop it, and pick up the same type later it is still upgraded, so change weapons freely for anything with ammo

Vanquish has a bit of style when it comes to animation but that's just it. The gameplay gets super stale real quick. After one hour, you've pretty much seen all the game has to offer. The story, characters and dialogue are not captivating at all. I understand the game doesn't take itself seriously but I think that's where it goes wrong. A decent story or even just one memorable character could've set up the franchise for a brighter future. Not worth it.

One of the best shooters I've played. Easily my favorite 3rd person shooter. The gameplay is fun and unique. Visuals are beautiful. And the overall presentation and pacing feels like you're watching a well-made anime.

There's even some replay value. Playing with different weapons will force you to approach each encounter differently. Plus, you can upgrade weapons, but you won't be able to fully upgrade all of them in a single playthrough.

Vanquish's ending is satisfying, but it allows for the continuation of the story. Why isn't there a sequel yet?!?

A third person shooter. Suit up and slide out as Sam Gideon as you retake a space station turned super weapon back from the Russians.

Stuff definitely happens related to the plot in cutscenes between acts and missions, but it can be kinda dull story wise. It can be enjoyable if you like war sequences I suppose. There are also scenes which are basically Sam performing a crazy stunt to blow up robots, fun fun. The English voice acting is competent but grating in a way. It might be better played with the Japanese audio. The characters… are also there. The main characters have some cool factor but I found it hard to like them much. The game is just okay in this area really. The environments are good enough but could do with more colour. Luckily it only ever gets better for the gameplay.

Like most third person shooters, you’ll find yourself getting behind cover to stay safe and peeking over it to blast your enemies to bits. Unlike most, you’re able to propel yourself rapidly while sliding along the ground, and aiming or shooting while doing this gives you bullet time. It’s both very fun to do and essential for taking down enemies effectively. The game usually encourages you to get out of cover and keep on the move too. But care must be taken, as your energy is limited, and you go into a recharge period if you run out completely or get hit too much, which leaves you extremely vulnerable. It’s somewhat of a balancing act.

The enemies you’ll face are robotic in nature and varied enough for a game of this length. Their designs are good enough. Even the lowly mook tier enemies are very capable of ripping you apart if you aren’t careful, and they only get more powerful from there. But each of them also have different tactics that are highly effective against them, and the process of finding these out and coming out on top of increasingly difficult challenges is a fun one indeed. Some enemy attacks can also provide an amazing spectacle.

Your arsenal consists of a decent pool of weapons, 3 of which you can have on your person at a time. They all have their utility and areas they excel at, but the 3 you start with are versatile enough to carry you through just about any challenge. The upgrade system might also tempt you to never leave these, as it can be hard to max out a weapon (only thing you can upgrade) if you switch out a lot. They are all fun to use in the end, so it is what it is. You also have two kinds of grenades to spice things up. Melee attacks are an option, and they hit extremely hard, but save for with one weapon, they leave you vulnerable afterwards, so care must be exercised when using them (which is a shame, because they’re cool).

It’s a really fun and frantic shooter overall, would greatly recommend it to fans of the genre and intense action in general.

TL;DR:
Don’t play Vanquish for the story, that’s obvious, but if you want a stupid, phenomenal gameplay experience unlike any other, this is a MUST PLAY, and you have to play it NOW!

Full Review:
Simply insane!

Vanquish was always a game I meant to get into but never did. I heard fantastic things about it in the past, but had heard that the original console versions of the game were not the way to go. Understandably, I waited. I eventually picked up the Bayonetta/Vanquish double pack steelbook for PS4, and had every intentions of playing the game that way, but since I got a semi-competent PC, I went for that option, and I certainly chose the better way to play this for the first time.

Vanquish is a simple to learn, hard to master 3rd person cover shooter, where you break past the usual bonds of just hunkering down in cover for inconceivable amounts of time and do pop shots from chest-high walls for 7 hours until the credits roll. Vanquish may have those elements, but it actively discourages you from just sitting in cover all day, rather engaging you in crazy moment mechanics that see you zipping around combat arenas at mach speeds when comparing to other traditional cover shooters. The sole job of Vanquish is to provide a high-octane adrenaline high as you pull off the most insane of tricks in a fluid ballerina dance of carnage, and it fulfills that role near flawlessly.

The gameplay of Vanquish is something that just cannot be accurately described in writing; it’s something you have to experience for yourself, but make sure that if you are to play it, that you give it a go on either of the current-gen ports or the PC port. As far as the PC port, I ran into few issues but nothing that actively hampered my experience. I had brief frame drops for a while, but after doing some simple menu configurations I ran a buttery smooth 60 FPS at 1080p at high settings with my mid-range PC, and I did encounter a single hard crash towards the beginning of the game, which was frustrating, but the game’s more forgiving checkpoint systems didn’t cause too many issues. Using the mouse and keyboard for your control options ultimately feels like the way to go, here. The precision of the mouse is something that feels needed to keep pace with the rest of the game; actively making sure you keep pace with all the insanity happening around you. The ability to zip around quickly with the mouse means that I was able to get effective headshots and target weak points with far more ease than what a gamepad would provide, but I guess now that I’ve experienced what seems to be the best way to play, I’m more curious than ever to try my PS4 version to see how a gamepad stacks up.

Anyway, Vanquish may be a simply fantastic game, but it does have its faults, though not many.

The first issue I have with Vanquish is that I just couldn’t really get into its narrative. I understand that for a game that’s just SO gameplay focused, that the story is more of an afterthought than anything else, but I never really cared for what was happening at any point in time. This also relays into the dialog, which is super hokey as expected coming from Shinji Mikami, but its funny moments mostly land flat with its one-dimensional characters that just scream at each other like Gears of War characters.

I also would’ve liked to see a bit more enemy variety. I honestly like that most of the game already has a rather good variety of robot enemies with variable move sets and weapons but killing robots over and over again does get tiresome after a while. Boss encounters shake this up a bit, each of which are all rather great, but I could’ve done with a few more enemy types to really keep the pace going stronger. Ultimately, the enemy variety issue isn’t that big of a problem, mainly because the game is rather short, so it never outstays its welcome. For a “normal” difficulty run, I finished the game at around 6 ½ hours, which was just fine for me.

My last complaint comes from certain enemy types which can be super cheap in their attacks. I know that Vanquish ultimately gives the player the upper hand in combat scenarios through the ungodly speed given to you, but no matter the game, I have always hated one-hit-kill attacks, and this game has a few, which had me stuck in certain points of the game. Without those attacks, I honestly could’ve finished this game closer to 6 hours flat, but certain cheap attacks can either do the aforementioned one-hit-kill, or you can draw the short straw from the luck stack in certain QTE scenarios where you can start a QTE with good footing, but end it being swarmed by enemies, making it nearly impossible to make it out alive.

Very fun, Fast paced with a good difficulty.
Zooming at 1000 miles a second while shooting robots in slow motion with explosions happening in the back ground makes you feel like a beast.
Also smoking a cigarette heals you, the game doesn't tell you this.
You could be having the fight of your life, enemy trying to melt your face off, and just say 'K' and smoke a cig behind cover to take the pis*, its great.

Would recommend as it's so fun and only costs £15, WORTH.

Шикарнейшая игра!

Мега рубилово нон-стоп.
Сюжет прост, но он есть.
Игра похожа на Gears of War ускоренное в несколько раз.
Dosvidaniya!

I been a fan of Platinum Games since Mad World and Bayonetta but I missed this gem of a game in their library. Like always they delivered on great gameplay and interesting concepts. A cool concept for a 3rd person shooter with slowmo incorporation and boost mechanics that makes movement as fun a the shooting itself. It also features a cheesy 80's esque movie style plotline that I found endearing. Overall a great game that's worth your time and money.

If there is one thing I love more than anything in a game, it's style. Not just style in presentation, but style in gameplay. This game feels like a real combat sandbox, and it's up to you how you choose to deal with each encounter. Do you systematically take out each enemy one by one with a powerful armor-piercing pistol? Or do you slide behind enemy lines and blast them away with a shotgun? Maybe you're the type of guy that distracts enemies with a lit cigarette and leaps into the air with a machine gun, raining down bullets on an unsuspecting target.

Honestly playing this game feels like I am taking part in a beautifully choreographed dance. It's simply one of the best action games I have ever played.

this is by far one of the best games of te PS3 era. the updated graphics and remastered version is true to the overwhelming experience of a balls to the walls action packed game that system feels as good, dare i say it, as Doom (2016).

if you enjoy over the top action games like Doom and Bulletstorm then this is right up your ally.
